Excellent, takes me back to my Youth 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Having grown up with Edgar Rice Burroughs - this is exactly the sort of high adventure I loved. These are more sophisticated technically (no need for strange powers etc). I thoroughly enjoyed the first book and am not disappointed with the second. The presentation is superb, with excellent facsimile documents and photographs, made to look like a real journal, beautiful fold out maps and schematics of Ships, and submarines, captivate. The story is fast paced and has and authenticity to it. A real Indiana Jones meets the league of extraordinary gentlemen. Enough to stimulate the imagination of any reader, adult or child.

Editorial Review:

After being lashed by a typhoon on their uncle's ship, THE EXPEDIENT, intrepid siblings Becca and Doug MacKenzie want nothing more than to escape from the volcanic island on which they're stranded and resume the search for their parents. But their uncle, Captain MacKenzie, seems more concerned with the missing gyrolabe than their missing mother and father, and he refuses to discuss the role the mysterious Guild of Specialists played in their disappearance. As the formidable Kalaxx warriors close in on their hidden cove, Becca and Doug unearth a riddle linked to a 1533 painting, which may hold the key to the Guild's dark secrets and to finding their parents. But how can they possibly solve the puzzle and escape with their lives — before their enemies attack?

Seven beautiful sisters 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 15 people found this review helpful.

What a marvelous artistic talent is displayed on the cover of "The Seven Chinese Sisters" book. Each sister has a specific talent (the talents of only two are revealed on the cover). But look at their faces--artistically, they are almost identical, yet after reading the book, I can pick out who is who. Their hairstyles and sizes are the distinct characteristics.

"The Seven Chinese Sisters" concerns the distinct talents used in defeating a dragon. Never mind the improbability of the talents. We know the story is a folktale through the dragon; therefore, we can easily accept the premise of the story.

First, the talents. Sister One can drive her motorcycle faster than the wind. Number Two is just short of her black belt in karate. Sister Three is astonishing with numbers and counting. Number Four is a dog whisperer. Fifth Sister can catch a ball, no matter what. Sixth can cook the most delicious noodle soup, and Seventh, being a baby, has not revealed her special talent.

Once talents are introduced, the problem presents itself in the form of a dragon that comes to eat the noodle soup. However, another eating choice appears: a big baby. Yum! He takes her back to his lair for privacy and full enjoyment of this tasty morsel.

Of course, the six sisters go to her rescue. This is a delightful story, one that will have children cheering and Oh-ing and Ah-ing.

The rest of the story may be found in the book.

Yes, the story is exciting, but more lies within. What does it take to defeat a dragon? Just six talents? No, each alone will not defeat him. However, six sisters (remember the baby?) put their heads together (figuratively) as a unit, a team to obtain a goal. They are courageous and bold and creative.

Please look again at those seven Chinese sisters on the cover and thank the heavens for such talent--no, not the talents of the sisters, but the talent of Kathy Tucker and Grace Lin for giving us this truly beautiful book.

The seventh sister? Yes, we learn her talent and it is best of all!

Editorial Review:

(Ages 5-8) Once there were seven Chinese sisters who lived together and took care of each other. Each one had a special talent. When baby Seventh Sister is snatched by a hungry dragon, her loving sisters race to save her.

In Kathy Tucker's delightful update of a classic Chinese folk tale, each sister uses her talent in a surprising way to rescue baby Seventh Sister-and even Seventh Sister turns out to have an unexpected skill!

Haveli 4 out of 5 stars.

Forced to become the wife of a man old enough to be her grandfather, Shabanu struggles to keep her young daughter safe from her husband's four other wives. Set in modern Pakistan, Haveli explores relationships between men and women, women's friendships, and ultimately the resourcefulness required to survive in a setting where women have very limited choices. Readers can identify with Shabanu, a strong, intelligent character who stays true to her own values even in the most difficult situations. I didn't like this book as much as Staples' first novel, Shabanu, because I thought the plot moved too slowly, but I think readers who enjoyed the first book will be interested to read more of the life of this compelling character.

Editorial Review:

The world of Newbery Honor book Shabanu is vividly re-created in this novel of a young Pakistani woman's heartbreaking struggle against the tyranny of custom and ancient law. Shabanu, now a mother at 18, faces daily challenges to her position in her husband's household, even as she plans for her young daughter's education and uncertain future. Then, during a visit to the haveli, their home in the city of Lahore, Shabanu falls in love with Omar, in spite of traditions that forbid their union.

An extremely good story for the hole family!!!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

I already finished City of the Beast and had to get this one! This book is awesome!! I love the adventures of Kate Cold, his grandson Alexander, the International Geography photographers and all the characters like; Nadia, Boroba (the monkey), and in this particular story the people of the Himalayas; the budist monks, Pema, Judit Kinski, Tensing and the future king, Dil Bahadur. The author Isabel Allende writes this stories so that you can almost feel like you're part of it. In this one, she writes about a Sacred Dragon statue of gold with beautiful gems and magical powers, that is secretly protected in the Kingdom of Tunkhala on the Tibet. Only the King knows the code to use this magical powers and of course the bad guys (the blue men from the scorpion sect) under the command of Tex Armadillo who wants to steal the Holy Gold Dragon. All that and more happen in the Gold Dragon Kingdom.
I can't wait for the next adventure of Kate Cold, Alexander Cold, the International Geographic group and maybe Nadia Santos.

Editorial Review:

Simply Stunning 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

"New Clothes for New Year's Day," by Hyun-Joo Bae, is told from the perspective of a small Korean girl. It begins,

"Today is New Year's Day.

It's a new year,
it's a new day, and
it's a new morning.
It's the first day for the beginning of everything.

The new sun hasn't shown up, and there are new clouds in the sky. (I hope we have new snow too.)

But the very best new things of all the new things are..."

Then our narrator begins to dress in her beautiful new clothes for the occasion*: "A crimson silk skirt. A rainbow-striped jacket. Delicate socks embroidered with flowers. A hair ribbon of read and gold." And, there's more: "flowered shoes, a gift from Father," a "warm, furry vest with the gold decorations," and a "special winter hat."

The young girl dresses with care, tying each bow with perfectly, straightening her socks, and checking her progress in the mirror. It's a simple, yet beautiful and optimistic tale, completed by Hyun-Joo Bae's stunning illustrations. And the illustrations are truly something special--colorful, simply composed, and embellished with flowers, gorgeous rooms, and, finally, snow.

Hyun-Joo Bae has included two pages of informational text at the end of "New Clothes for New Year's Day" explaining each item of clothing, its significance, and the role of New Year's Day in Korean culture. "New Clothes for New Year's Day" is highly recommended for children ages four to nine and is an excellent choice for a read aloud on New Year's celebrations. It will also be enjoyed by that dress-up obsessed child in your life.
=============================================
* Don't worry. Our hero begins her day dressed in a white robe designed to be worn underneath her costume.

Editorial Review:

Told in a few lines of text, this tender story was first published in a newspaper in 1938. This tale from Korea is universal--a small child waits for Mama at the station, asking the conductor if he has seen her. The conductor hasn't, but cautions the child to wait a little farther from the tracks. It is cold and snowy but the child waits patiently until finally Mama comes. In the last wordless spread, we see the small hand in a mother's firm clasp as they walk away from us. The art and text are so authentic, so real, that this book is best published in a bilingual edition that respects and honors those traditions. The Korean setting gives it special appeal to a growing demographic segment. The institutional market is especially hungry for bilingual books in languages beyond Spanish.

Possibly not fiction 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 15 people found this review helpful.

I read this book several years ago and could hardly put it down until I finished it. I wrote to the publisher to ask if this book was fiction, but I got no reply. I had the impression in reading it that is was not fiction, and yet the words 'fictionalized' and 'novel' are used for it on Amazon. I was curious to know what is fiction in it and what is not.

I differ with some reviewers criticizing the book's language or style. There is nothing wrong with either, as I recall. Nor is the book only for children or "young readers" by any means.

An everyday yet new lesson taught 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 9 people found this review helpful.

From this book My brother, My sister and I, I learnt quite a lot, though a lot of the dialogue seems to be cold and unnatural, the theme is the most important part of it. In this book the orphans Hideyo, Ko and Yoko squeeze through all the hard times and find new ways of over coming these things. In the end, the three of them find a special someone who may not look the same but is the same person, they live happily ever after (at least for now)

Editorial Review:

Thirteen-year-old Yoko and her older brother and sister live in abject poverty in Japan at the end of World War II. When the clog factory warehouse they call home is destroyed by fire, their lives become even more desperate, particularly when Yoko's sister, Ko, is injured and must be hospitalized and her brother, Hideyo, is accused of murder. "Beautifully direct and emotionally honest."--Publishers Weekly, starred review.

Read to Your Child to Develop Bonding and Intellect! 5 out of 5 stars.
28 of 29 people found this review helpful.

Researchers constantly find that reading to children is valuable in a variety of ways, not least of which are instilling a love of reading and improved reading skills. With better parent-child bonding from reading, your child will also be more emotionally secure and able to relate better to others. Intellectual performance will expand as well. Spending time together watching television fails as a substitute.

To help other parents apply this advice, as a parent of four I consulted an expert, our youngest child, and asked her to share with me her favorite books that were read to her as a young child. The Moon Lady was one of her picks.

Adapted from Amy Tan's best selling book, The Joy Luck Club, The Moon Lady is a perfect book for encouraging children to read with and talk to their grandmother. The book also very subtly encourages children to take more responsibility for their own lives. The story provides a model for parents and grandparents for how to create their own stories to help children learn important lessons.

The story begins as three girls, Maggie, Lily and June, are bored because they have to stay in on a rainy day and can think of nothing that they want to do. Their grandmother, Nai-nai, is with them. Nai-nai tells them a story about when she was a young girl in China, and she ran and shouted and could not stand still also.

The story is about the day she told the Moon Lady her secret wish. Then unfolds a wonderful story of a young girl's adventure on a special trip to see the Moon Lady. Along the way, she sees many things she has not seen before, falls overboard, is rescued by a fishing family, and finds her family again after meeting the Moon Lady. In the process, she has one of those epiphanies that make all of our lives better -- that she is in charge of creating her own future.

The story is filled with references to family bonding and what is and is not proper behavior. The story also shows what family life was like for a somewhat well-to-do Chinese family in China at the beginning of the 20th century. These references are made all the more realistic by a wonderful series of drawings by Gretchen Schields with bright colors, beautiful detail, and authentic depictions of the China of years ago. It's almost like living a beautiful dream.

Then Nai-nai takes her granddaughters out to dance in the moon after the story is over.

Of all the children's books I have read, I place this one in the top ten for the 4-8 age category.

A central problem for many children today is that too much television, too many structured activities, and too little free time leave them feeling lost when nothing is on the agenda. Our misconception is that they need regimented lives like those that soldiers lead to fulfill their potential. This book will encourage you to readdress that misconception, and focus on how to make your children more competent in thinking about others, being more independent, and designing their own beneficial activities. That is all very important to actually unleashing their full potential. When you are done, think about how perhaps your own life needs a little improvement along these same lines.

Enjoy!

Editorial Review:

A MAGICAL NIGHT WHEN SECRET WISHES CAN COME TRUE

On a rainy afternoon, three sisters wish for the rain to stoop, wish they could play in the puddles, wish for something, anything, to do. So Ying-Ying, their grandmother, tells them a tale from long ago. On the night of the Moon Festival, when Ying-ying was a little girl, she encountered the Moon Lady, who grants the secret wishes of those who ask, and learned from her that the best wishes are those you can make come true yourself. This haunting tale, adapted from Amy Tan's best-seller The Joy Luck Club and enhanced by Gretchen Schields's rich, meticulously detailed art, is a book for all to treasure.

Editorial Review:

A remarkable debut novel set in India that shows one girl’s struggle for independence.

During World War II and the last days of British occupation in India, fifteen-year-old Vidya dreams of attending college. But when her forward-thinking father is beaten senseless by the British police, she is forced to live with her grandfather’s large traditional family, where the women live apart from the men and are meant to be married off as soon as possible.

Vidya’s only refuge becomes her grandfather’s upstairs library, which is forbidden to women. There she meets Raman, a young man also living in the house who relishes her intellectual curiosity. But when Vidya’s brother decides to fight with the hated British against the Nazis, and when Raman proposes marriage too soon, Vidya must question all she has believed in.

Padma Venkatraman’s debut novel poignantly shows a girl struggling to find her place in a mixedup world. Climbing the Stairs is a powerful story about love and loss set against a fascinating historical backdrop.
