I love Laurie Keller's books, especially The Scrambled States of America. She was partially my inspiration when I was writing The Little Man In the Map. The Little Man In the Map: With Clues To Remember All 50 States
Books like these can spark an interest in learning more about this wonderful country and the world.

Editorial Review:

A wacky cross-country adventure starring the fifty states!

"Well, it was just your basic, ordinary day in the good old U. S. of A. States all over the country were waking up, having their first cups of coffee, reading the morning paper, and enjoying the beautiful sunrise.

All the states, that is, except for Kansas."

At the first annual "states party," Virginia and Idaho hatch a plan to swap spots so each can see another part of the country. Before the party is over, all the states decide to switch places. In the beginning, every state is happy in its new location. But soon things start to go wrong. Will the states ever unscramble themselves and return to their proper places?

Packed with madcap humor and whimsical illustrations, this quirky story-starring all fifty states-is chock-full of introductory facts and silly antics that will make learning geography as much fun as taking a vacation.

Editorial Review:

Fifty years ago, Walt Disney utterly transformed the concept of outdoor entertainment venues from tawdry carnivals and seedy amusement piers called "amusement parks," to an entirely new destination that would come into common vernacular as the "theme park."

Although Disneyland was the inspiration of one man, Walt did not achieve this history-altering concept on his own. Using his innate talent for combining disparate skills and personalities, he assembled a creative team that blended imagination with engineering. Walt called this group his "Imagineers."

Walt Disney's Legends of Imagineering and the Genesis of the Disney Theme Park introduces a core group of the originators of Disneyland and the other Disney parks. It explores their individual relationships with Walt and each other, their creative breakthroughs and failures, and their rivalries and professional politics. This candid narrative of their lives and contributions to a very special form of entertainment illustrates why, half a century later, their work continues to be vital and important to millions of people every day, and all over the world.

Lavishly illustrated throughout with rare and never-before-seen artwork and photographs, Walt Disney's Legends of Imagineering and the Genesis of the Disney Theme Park will further enrich the reader's appreciation of the exceptional talent behind Disneyland's creation and ongoing evolution.

beautiful 5 out of 5 stars.

Exclamations come to mind: beautiful design and drawings, comprehensive and to the point guide! And this goes for all his city guides Paris, Rome, Venice and Hong Kong. You might argue it is a bit old fashioned, but I think you are confusing it with "it s one of the Classics". And when something is called a Classic, it is timeless and a Must-Have! Trust me, it is worth your while and money!

good find 5 out of 5 stars.

I am so glad to have found this book, it is from my childhood. New York Rocks.

Editorial Review:

Facsimile edition of a beloved, long out-of-print children's classic.

The charm and uniqueness of New York City was never more beautifully and whimsically created for children than in Miroslav Sasek's This Is New York. First published in 1960, his vision of New York nearly forty years ago still remains fresh: the hustle and bustle of Times Square, the ethnic neighborhoods, the awe-inspiring architecture. Sasek captured the essences of New York that delight children and parents, many of whom who will remember the book from their childhood.

GREAT TOUR GUIDE!! 5 out of 5 stars.

This was my first time in NYC and just LOVED it!! This travel guide, once again exceeded my expectations. I'm a fan of DK Eyewitness Travel Guide. I don't go anywhere without these guides. I feel lost without them. Its such a great guide with maps, recommendations, the metro map system, etc. The downside of this book is that it shouldn't be name 'NEW YORK', instead, it should be MANHATTAN. Since it ONLY talks about Manhattan. It should have a few pages dedicated to Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens, etc. The metro system map it comes with is ONLY of Manhattan. But this is a great guide with EVERYTHING you need: History, schedules, information, etc. DON'T GO TO NEW YORK WITHOUT IT!! Plus it looks great for your collection.

Editorial Review:

At first glance New York City might seem overwhelming, but the Eyewitness Travel to New York will make the city feel uncomplicated. Take a bite out of the Big Apple as you discover New York's shopping, museums, restaurants, hotels, parks, nightlife, and theaters. This lavishly illustrated guide will enlighten your experience and make it easy to manage. Everyday in New York offers its visitors something new to see and experience.

Warriors Don't Cry (HTMMA-Thethethe's) 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Title: Warriors Don't Cry
Author: Melba Pattillo Beals
Summary: Warriors Don't Cry is a book about a young African American girl named Melba integrating into an all white high school. It describes her journey through segregation and the hard times that Melba and her family had to go through. She enters Central High with 8 other African American students, not knowing the physical and mental abuse that they were about to endure. Melba sticks through it and fights like a warrior to make it though an entire year.
We enjoyed reading about all the exciting events that happened to Melba , and the 9 other African Americans. It was really interesting learning about integration and knowing it was all a true story made it even more impacting. Having it written by her was empowering because she was there to witness these events. We wished that some of the more exciting events were described more in detail because it would have made the book more suspenseful to see what would happen next. If you want to learn about historical event we would recommend this book to you. Its not the kinda of book that you get a good laugh out of or a good unrealistic story.

Editorial Review:

An innocent teenager.

An unexpected hero.

In 1957, Melba Pattillo turned sixteen. That was also the year she became a warrior on the front lines of a civil rights firestorm. Following the landmark 1954 Supreme Court ruling, Brown v. Board of Education, Melba was one of nine teenagers chosen to integrate Little Rock's Central High School.

Throughout her harrowing ordeal, Melba was taunted by her schoolmates and their parents, threatened by a lynch mob's rope, attacked with lighted sticks of dynamite, and injured by acid sprayed in her eyes. But through it all, she acted with dignity and courage, and refused to back down.

This is her remarkable story.

Editorial Review:

In stunning prose, Nathaniel Philbrick evokes the drama of the voyage of the Mayflower and the eerie emptiness of coastal Massachusetts that greeted the Pilgrims. He tells how the settlers were able to gain the friendship of many powerful Native American leaders, including the charismatic Massasoit, and how they worked together to maintain peace. But the promise of the First Thanksgiving was broken with the next generation of leaders. Fifty-six years after the Mayflower’s landing, a horrifying conflict, known today as King Philip’s war, nearly wiped out the colonists and Natives alike, and forever altered the new country.

The Mayflower and the Pilgrims’ New World is the perfect introduction for young readers to this epic story, at once tragic and heroic. Adapted specially for middle-grade readers, this book features a wealth of supplemental materials such as new maps and photographs, a time line, and a list of characters for added comprehension and accessibility.

My Kids Loved This Book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Sometimes in political campaigns, people get all angry at candidates like they are an opposing baseball team and they forget that they are real people and deserve to be celebrated and recognized as people. Childish name calling rips off SO many people when it comes to politics.

In the case of John McCain, despite me formerly making judgments on him based upon information acquired through media, I was amazed to realize that I had so overlooked him as a person.

In the book MY DAD, JOHN MCCAIN, Meghan McCain writes a lovely book about her father in language that young children can understand. Regardless of what he is thought of politically, I think it is a good thing for children to know something about famous political figures as PEOPLE not just from what razzle dazzle is (or in this case is not) force fed to us on TV.

Meghan McCain is proud of her father, and everyone in my family was impressed with her simple yet direct explanations of why her father would make a good President of the United States, but also why she was proud of him and why she admires him.

Such a book is good for children to read- it shows a daughter who is very proud of her father- and for good reason, John McCain is a hero for the United States.

Although she explains his prisoner of war experience it is very light weight for children- it will not overwhelm them. Also, she explains simply how many good and valuable qualities he has, determination being one of them.

Lastly, the book is covered with very nice illustrations done by Dan Andreasen. They colors are lovely and the drawing/paintings are beautifully done.

This book is an excellent book for young people to read about one of the many American Heroes , but especially because it is from a daughter that loves her dad.

It is not the BEST book I have ever read, but it is a nice simple book.

For anyone else to say anything bad about it, is just sour political grapes from someone who does not understand or value family or the heritage of the United States and should not be paid attention to.

Editorial Review:

Born the son and grandson of military men, Senator John McCain from Arizona was destined for a life serving his country in the armed forces. Like many great men, he occasionally struggled with authority, but once he found his true calling -- flying naval aircraft -- his ideals and commitment to his country took him far.

From the low point of five years as a prisoner of war to the high points of raising a large, happy family and being chosen as the Republican nominee in the 2008 presidential election, Senator McCain has lived an incredible life driven by a love of his country and a desire to serve it to the best of his ability.

This picture book biography, written with great love and insight by his oldest daughter, writer Meghan McCain, shows us the public John McCain and the personal John McCain in a way we've never seen before -- making this American hero come to life before young eyes.
