First hand experience 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Never have I been more impressed as a veterinary student at Cornell than when I visited the Monks of New Skete. Picture a dozen or more monks eating dinner around a large table, each with a German Shepherd dog lying quiety by his side throughout the entire meal. The monks have been doing this for decades- no reason to change their training methods because they work so well. Aren't we fortunate that they have been willing to share their trade secrets with the rest of the dog loving world.

not the best training guide. 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I have read tons of other training guides, and while I found this book a good read, it was not exactly helpful in terms of training. It focused more on their monastery, stories about dogs they trained, and the birthing process of a German Shepherd. Mind you, I'm big GSD lover so I enjoyed this book, but I wish I had purchased another book for more tips on training.
Some of the tips offered are great and work well, but there should have been more. But do keep in mind the book's title! "The ART of Raising a Puppy," not "HOW to Raise a Puppy." So it's understandable that there are numerous stories and other bits of info. But if you're looking for a real how-to guide with a lot of tips, I would look elsewhere.

Editorial Review:

The monks of New Skete, authors of the classic guide How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend, now apply their highly successful training methods to the crucial first months of a puppy's life. 50 photographs.

Puppy magic 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

How to Raise a Puppy You Can Live With Of the many books that have been written about raising puppies, this one has truly stood the test of time. It provides an easy to follow formula for success. Readers learn all about puppy selection as well as secrets to socializing and training that result in a successful transition from puppyhood to adulthood. The end result is a dog whose personality is well suited to his human family and environment rather than one who will be abandoned or relinquished to an animal shelter. I love the fact that Rutherford's and Neil's methodology incorporates positive reinforcement only. Their keen understanding of canine behavior provides a solid background for what they teach. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is contemplating puppy adoption.

Editorial Review:

This classic is newly revised and offers the latest information, including a discussion of clicker training. Puppy owners will find answers to questions about everything from house training to discipline and will learn how to socialize a puppy to promote confidence and a sound temperament. Breeders will learn valuable information about puppy development during the first weeks of life and will gain insights to enable them to give their puppies the best start possible.

Editorial Review:

It was love at first sight. Amid the frenzied barking and prancing of a house full of Great Danes, one pup was shivering in the corner. Gracie. But when Dan Dye reached her, she struggled to her feet like a clumsy foal, raised her forehead to his, and announced, as clearly as if she had actually spoken the words, You know I'm the one. No get me outta here!

By turns funny, moving, tender, and inspiring, Gracie's tale is a treat for every dog lover. There is Gracie's first morning, racing around Dan in the snowy yard. Gracie's first determination to prove to her step-sisters, Dottie the Dalmation and Sarah the Black Lab, that she's one of the girls. Gracie's defiant romance with a pint-size charmer named Byron, a Boston Terrier from the wrong side of the fence.

Then born of necessity, the eureka moment: When Gracie's delicate constitution starts turning into anorexia, Dan teaches himself how to cook, and in three days is baking her the cookies that will spur her appetite, launch Three Dog Bakery, and transform their lives forever.

Courage. Compassion. Kindness. Soul. Tenacity. And joy, above all, joy. These qualities Gracie possessed in abundance, and shared with everyone, human or canine, who had the good fortune to cross her path.

Editorial Review:

Twenty years ago, St. Martin's Press published a volume of memoirs by an unknown Scottish veterinarian named James Herriot. Its title was All Creatures Great and Small.

Within a year, the book had become recognized as a masterpiece. In the two decades that have followed, James Herriot has become one of the most universally loved authors of our time.

Now, as we celebrate the publication of Every Living Thing-- the country vet's fifth book of memoirs-- St. Martin's is proud to reissue the book that started it all. Its pages, now as then, are full of humor, warmth, pathos, drama, and James Herriot's unique, richly justified love of life. His journeys across the Yorkshire dales, his encounters with humans and dogs, cows and kittens are illumined by his infinite fascination and affection, and rendered with all the infectious joy of a born storyteller.

As one reviewer wrote," If you ever loved a friend, human or otherwise, this is the book for you."

I was pleasantly please 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The first thing I noticed about this book is how the Monks start right away as "REAL" people who are not trying to sugarcoat the readers eyes with what you expect to read. They have a honest, different approach to training your dog with methods that will not agree with everyone. I believe their techniques are very helpful to anyone who has a larger breed dog but has limited training and behavioral information on the toy breed owners. Even though I have a toy breed, I found that some information in this book was helpful and very resourceful.

can be too harsch for some breeds and temperaments 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The methods in this book will work on many dogs but be dead wrong for certain temperaments and breeds. It is WAY to harsch for my soft goldens.

outdated, wrong, harsh 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book presents the state of the art in dog training dating back to about 1975. The techniques are based on punishment, not building a positive relationship with your dog. The techniques will work with SOME dogs, but you will get better results with all dogs by using more modern techniques based on a better understanding of how dogs learn. Check out books by Pat Miller, Patricia McConnell and Jean Donaldson, for a start.

Editorial Review:

The monks of New Skete advocate the philosophy that "understanding is the keyto communication, compassion, and communion" with your dog. This very specialguide features a unique, step-by-step obedience course, and proper techniquesfor complete care at every stage of a dog's life.

This book worked for me, a cat person not used to dogs 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I thought that Mr. Kilcommons had a lot of great ideas. The thing is you use what works and your leave the rest. Not every trainer works for every dog. The main thing is that the person must be the alpha dog and act properly so that your dog respects you and wants to work for you.
I like the fact that Mr. Kilcommons says that the owners need to do their part, such as exercise. If a dog misbehaves, a lot of time it may be because they are not getting enough exercise. So if they still misbehave, give them more exercise. There is a lot of responsibility to being an owner. Also, I saw the results regarding using plastic bowls for my cats; I used Mr. Kilcommons' advice in using ceramic or stainless steel bowls instead and one my cats lost her black mark on her chin. So the book has a lot of good advice.

Editorial Review:

Two years ago when we published James Herriot's All Creatures Great and Small, we called it a "miracle between covers." In the first major review of the book, Alfred Ames said: "If there is any justice, All Creatures Great and Small will become a classic of its kind. The publishers call it a miracle-- not too strong a word for a book that offers something for everyone: gusto, humor, pathos, information, romance, insight, style. It is vicarious living with one of the happiest and most admirable of people, a veterinary surgeon in the Yorkshire dales who can write superlatively well."

James, the miracle worker, has done it again. All Things Bright and Beautiful is precisely the warm and joyful sequel that readers all over America have been asking for. James is now married, and he and Helen live on the top floor of Skeldale House, while his former boss, now partner, Siegfried lives downstairs with Siegfried's brother Tristan. James continues the rich and rewarding day-to-day life of a small-town veterinarian, and we journey with him across the dales meeting a whole new cast of unforgettable characters-- humans, dogs, horses, lambs, parakeets-- all of them drawn with the same infinite fascination, affection, and insight that have made Herriot one of the most beloved authors of our time. This is the most loving book of the year to have-- or to give.
