Adorable 5 out of 5 stars.

Adorable story and illustrations. A must have for any nursery. But very young children will lose interest in it pretty fast because of the amount of text on each page and the fact that the pictures are pretty much the same on every page, and not brightly colored and bold. So not a BABY book. But still, who can resist the title alone??? Mom loves it even if baby doesn't yet.

over 20 years later... 5 out of 5 stars.

and my mom and i still play this game. i am now 29 years old we still tell each other "i love you deeper than the ocean" its like our own private way of communicating by being able to draw back to a happy childhood memory.

Kid's always want to top their parents. 4 out of 5 stars.

Kids look up to their parents so it's their nature to top them anyway they can. I remember when I became bigger then my dad when I was a freshman in highschool, that really excited me. This book plays on them theme in such a loving way. But of course, you will never top your parents love.

Incest? Stalking? are you kidding me??? Stop watching so much "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit"! This story is as sweet as can be. It saddens me that some people think being affectionate with your child is "creepy".

Editorial Review:

The mother sings to her sleeping baby: "I'll love you forever / I'll love you for always / As long as I'm living / My baby you'll be." She still sings the same song when her baby has turned into a fractious 2-year-old, a slovenly 9-year-old, and then a raucous teen. So far so ordinary--but this is one persistent lady. When her son grows up and leaves home, she takes to driving across town with a ladder on the car roof, climbing through her grown son's window, and rocking the sleeping man in the same way. Then, inevitably, the day comes when she's too old and sick to hold him, and the roles are at last reversed. Each stage is illustrated by one of Sheila McGraw's comic and yet poignant pastels. One of my daughter's favorite books 5 out of 5 stars.

We began reading this book to our daughter when she was 21 months old. She loves it, along with Knuffle Bunny Too, which she had a few months earlier. She loves to flip through the pages herself and tell the story. The artwork is inventive, and the story is fun for her and for the adults.

Editorial Review:

Trixie, Daddy, and Knuffle Bunny take a trip to the neighborhood Laundromat. But the exciting adventure takes a dramatic turn when Trixie realizes somebunny was left behind . . . Using a combination of muted black-and-white photographs and expressive illustrations, this stunning book tells a brilliantly true-to-life tale about what happens when Daddys in charge and things go terribly, hilariously wrong. Mo Willems is a six-time Emmy Awardwinning writer and former animator for Sesame Street, and the creator of Cartoon Networks Sheep in the Big City. Both his first book for children, Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, and his fourth book Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Tale won prestigious Caldecott Honors from the American Library Association. ALONE

Thirteen-year-old Brian Robeson is on his way to visit his father when the single-engine plane in which he is flying crashes. Suddenly, Brian finds himself alone in the Canadian wilderness with nothing but a tattered Windbreaker and the hatchet his mother gave him as a present -- and the dreadful secret that has been tearing him apart since his parent's divorce. But now Brian has no time for anger, self pity, or despair -- it will take all his know-how and determination, and more courage than he knew he possessed, to survive.

Editorial Review:

"It's funny how ideas are, in a lot of ways they're just like seeds. Both of them start real, real small and then... woop, zoop, sloop... before you can say Jack Robinson, they've gone and grown a lot bigger than you ever thought they could." So figures scrappy 10-year-old philosopher Bud--"not Buddy"--Caldwell, an orphan on the run from abusive foster homes and Hoovervilles in 1930s Michigan. And the idea that's planted itself in his head is that Herman E. Calloway, standup-bass player for the Dusky Devastators of the Depression, is his father.

Guided only by a flier for one of Calloway's shows--a small, blue poster that had mysteriously upset his mother shortly before she died--Bud sets off to track down his supposed dad, a man he's never laid eyes on. And, being 10, Bud-not-Buddy gets into all sorts of trouble along the way, barely escaping a monster-infested woodshed, stealing a vampire's car, and even getting tricked into "busting slob with a real live girl." Christopher Paul Curtis, author of The Watsons Go to Birmingham--1963, once again exhibits his skill for capturing the language and feel of an era and creates an authentic, touching, often hilarious voice in little Bud. Editorial Review:

"You have the right to remain silent." However...

The fifth-grade girls and the fifth-grade boys at Laketon Elementary don't get along very well. But the real problem is that these kids are loud and disorderly. That's why the principal uses her red plastic bullhorn. A lot.

Then one day Dave Packer, a certified loudmouth, bumps into an idea -- a big one that makes him try to keep quiet for a whole day. But what does Dave hear during lunch? A girl, Lynsey Burgess, jabbering away. So Dave breaks his silence and lobs an insult. And those words spark a contest: Which team can say the fewest words during two whole days? And it's the boys against the girls.

How do the teachers react to the silence? What happens when the principal feels she's losing control? And will Dave and Lynsey plunge the whole school into chaos?

This funny and surprising book is about language and thought, about words unspoken, words spoken in anger, and especially about the power of words spoken in kindness...with or without a bullhorn. It's Andrew Clements at his best -- thought-provoking, true-to-life, and very entertaining.

This Surprised me... 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I think this is a beautiful little book. I like the way it you can still remember Lois Lowry wrote it while imagining something fun. The story was not at all predictable, and I was surprised by many events. There is one thing I was dissapointed by, and that was that the title did not have a hidden meaning, like in The Giver and Gathering Blue, I love that aha! moment that you get near the end of the story, and it was not in this book. I highly recommend reading the glossary and bibliography, because they are witty and helped me out with a few confusing words. One last thing is that even though it seems like a children's story, it would be enjoyed more by young adults.
I know I've said a lot, and since there is a mixture of good and bad qualities of the book written above, look at the number of stars the book got...

Editorial Review:

Abandoned by their ill-humored parents to the care of an odious nanny, Tim, the twins, Barnaby A and Barnaby B, and their sister, Jane, attempt to fulfill their roles as good oldfashioned children. Following the models set in lauded tales from A Christmas Carol to Mary Poppins, the four Willoughbys hope to attain their proscribed happy ending too, or at least a satisfyingly maudlin one. However, it is an unquestionably ruthless act that sets in motion the transformations that lead to their salvation and to happy endings for not only the four children, but their nanny, an abandoned baby, a candy magnate, and his long-lost son too. Replete with a tongue-in-cheek glossary and bibliography, this hilarious and decidedly old-fashioned parody pays playful homage to classic works of children's literature.

My 2 year old loves this! 5 out of 5 stars.

My 2 year old daughter loves this book! We just got it at the library and we read it over and over again! It presents a very real situation- the kiddo who doesn't want to go shopping with mama- for kids and parents and provides a happy solution/ending. Not only is the rhyming fun and the pictures great but both my daughter and I connect with the story!

Editorial Review:

Yucky music, great big feet.

Ladies smelling way too sweet.

Look at knees and stand in line.

Llama Llama starts to whine.

Does any child like to go shopping? Not Llama Llama! But Mama can’t leave Llama at home, so off they go to Shop-O-Rama. Lots of aisles. Long lines. Mama is too busy to notice that Llama Llama is getting m-a-d! And before he knows it, he’s having a full-out tantrum! Mama quickly calms him down, but she also realizes that they need to make shopping more fun for both of them. Parents and children are sure to recognize themselves in this fun-to-read follow-up to the popular Llama Llama Red Pajama.

Margaret Wise Brown' s second masterpiece 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I just noticed another review (one of the few on the lone star end) describing this book as "creepy." There is something haunting about it for sure, but I always felt as we read it to our children there was something immense about it too. It's extremely compact and the images have tremendously simple focus and power. I think part of Margaret Wise Brown's genius (a good bio of her is Margaret Wise Brown: Awakened by the Moon) was her willingness to honestly take on something as awesome as a mother's ultimate bond to her child. It's like The Giving Tree in which the parent doesn't lie down and make herself into a chopping block. The story might start out seeming whimsical and light, but in the end it comes down to bonds of steel. I was never sure how our son and daughter reacted to it. I think the chemistry is bound to hinge on timing and on things about the particular child and parent. Powerful medicine. Handle with care. But surely great poetry and literature for the young. Nutty to Meet You! Dr. Peanut Book #1

Editorial Review:

Ellen Hopkins's semi-autobiographical verse novel, Crank, reads like a Go Ask Alice for the 21st century. In it, she chronicles the turbulent and often disturbing relationship between Kristina, a character based on her own daughter, and the "monster," the highly addictive drug crystal meth, or "crank." Kristina is introduced to the drug while visiting her largely absent and ne'er-do-well father. While under the influence of the monster, Kristina discovers her sexy alter-ego, Bree: "there is no perfect daughter, / no gifted high school junior, / no Kristina Georgia Snow. / There is only Bree." Bree will do all the things good girl Kristina won't, including attracting the attention of dangerous boys who can provide her with a steady flow of crank. Soon, her grades plummet, her relationships with family and friends deteriorate, and she needs more and more of the monster just to get through the day. Kristina hits her lowest point when she is raped by one of her drug dealers and becomes pregnant as a result. Her decision to keep the baby slows her drug use, but doesn't stop it, and the author leaves the reader with the distinct impression that Kristina/Bree may never be free from her addiction. In the author's note, Hopkins warns "nothing in this story is impossible," but when Kristina's controlled, high-powered mother allows her teenage daughter to visit her biological father (a nearly homeless known drug user), the story feels unbelievable. Still, the descriptions of crystal meth use and its consequences are powerful, and will horrify and transfix older teenage readers, just as Alice did over 20 years ago. --Jennifer Hubert
