A book for children, but not too bad for that. A bored girl, her brothers and others get mixed up in an adventure across the space-time continuum by way of some nifty tesseract tricks.

When a strange older woman comes visiting they set off to find the father of all these children, who is a prisoner of one of your standard supervillains, a giant disembodied telepathic brain.

Editorial Review:

Father is missing! His top secret job as a physicist for the government has taken him away--but where?--and how? Meg and her younger brother, Charles Wallace, set out with their friend Calvin on an exciting adventure through time and space to search for him. With the help of the mysterious Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who and Mrs. Which, the youngsters learn to expect the unexpected as they move in the fifth dimension known as the "tesseract".

With this award-winning story, Madeline L'Engle has captivated millions of readers throughout the world. Her universal themes of courage, perseverance, and love are interwoven with imagination and suspense. A Wrinkle in Time, published in 1962, won the distinguished Newbery Medal for children's literature in 1963.

great for young and old 5 out of 5 stars.

If you have ever felt like less than a great artist this book is for you. Learn to embrace your inner "ish" as this simple book explains that art isn't about being a great artist, but rather to create art to enjoy the process and fun of it!

Editorial Review:

A creative spirit learns that thinking "ish-ly" is far more wonderful than "getting it right" in this gentle new fable from the creator of the award-winning picture book THE DOT.

Ramon loved to draw. Anytime. Anything. Anywhere.

Drawing is what Ramon does. It¹s what makes him happy. But in one split second, all that changes. A single reckless remark by Ramon's older brother, Leon, turns Ramon's carefree sketches into joyless struggles. Luckily for Ramon, though, his little sister, Marisol, sees the world differently. She opens his eyes to something a lot more valuable than getting things just "right." Combining the spareness of fable with the potency of parable, Peter Reynolds shines a bright beam of light on the need to kindle and tend our creative flames with care.

It's just a story, isn't it? 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 17 people found this review helpful.

There is something about the magical that deeply appeals to children. That's why fairy tales are so beloved by them. Even folk tales, a more realistic spin-off of fairy tales, are also favorites of children.

No exception is "The Five Chinese Brothers," written by Claire Hucket Bishop and illustrated by Kurt Wiese. This 1938 publication is still in print, testifying to its popularity. The call of political incorrectness just does not apply here. These five brothers are identical, not because all Chinese people look alike, but because they are quintuplets. Does the story say so? No, but it only figures...

These five brothers--each has a unique gift, each strange, but nevertheless, their gifts are what this story is about. The first brother can swallow the sea, the second has an iron neck, the third can stretch his legs indefinitely, the fourth cannot be burned, and the fifth can hold his breath indefinitely.

So the first takes a child fishing and uses his sea-holding ability so that the child can pick seashells and the like normally hidden under the water. Sad, but the little boy is headstrong and won't return to shore, the brother lets out the sea, and the boy disappears. The brother is going to be executed by axe. He asks to go say goodbye to his mother and switches with his second brother whose neck cannot be hurt.

And so on with each brother who is to be punished by death. Finally, after the fifth try, the judge sets him free. He returns home and lives happily with his brothers and mother.

Children love this book because it strikes their fancy: wild abilities, escape from punishment, astonishment of the town folk, and freedom.

I can see that.

Editorial Review:

The classic story about five clever brothers, each with a different extraordinary ability is "a dramatic retelling of an old Chinese tale". (The New York Public Library)". . . . when Bishop makes the tall brother stretch, the sea-swallower work, or the robust one hold his breath, young children will laugh and laugh".--New York Herald Tribune Books. The Wall by: Eve Bunting 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Loosing a relative can be tough, especially if your close to them, or too young to ever experience or meet them. All you can do is wonder. The book The Wall by: Eve Bunting, is aobut a dad and his son that go and visit the Vietnam War Memorial in memory of the dad's father, or the son's grandfather that died in the Vietnam War. Eve Bunting describes what happens there from a child's point of view. It is very realistic, and makes you feel like you are really there.
This book not only teaches little kid's lessons, but is good for even adults. IT really took me back and made me think. It made me think of how valuable our lives really are, and when we die, who is really affected by it. Also, it taught me that loosing someone you love doesn't always have to be sad, especially if they have died fighting for what they believe in. So, if somebody you know died, think of the positive side. Reading this book may take you back, and let you think of why they were so special.

FIRR-Kids! Review 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Wow! This is the most amazing pop up book! There are tabs on every single page that do all sorts of different things. Of course there is pop up, but also pull down, slide over, twirl around and swoop down. It's so much fun! And being that it's Charlie and Lola, you can read this in a fake British accent while your kids roll their eyes.

As the title implies, Lola likes to stay up late and not go to bed. Charlie must work to keep her on track in spite of her outlandish excuses. Lola can't possibly get ready for bed when there are tigers who pop up in the kitchen needing a bedtime drink, a lion hogging her toothbrush and whales swimming round the bathtub. Not to mention the dancing dogs twirling about in her pajamas and a hippo lounging in her bed. Bedtime is a real zoo around here!

This is an awesome book that offers plenty of hands-on activities for the readers. Each tab is different from the last, so you won't know what to expect when you turn the page. A great deal of thought went into the tabs to make them ever so entertaining - the dogs actually twirl around in the bed and the toothpaste pulls out in a squiggle. In all, a great big oversized book with a ton of fun inside!

Editorial Review:

A new edition with 15 novelty scenes! Bedtime balkers will laugh at Lola's
antics — while grown-ups offer a silent cheer for her savvy brother.

Night owl Lola likes to stay up coloring and scribbling and wriggling and bouncing and chattering. Lola never gets tired. How can her patient big brother, Charlie, convince her it's time for bed? Lauren Child splashes her offbeat humor and unique artwork all over this bedtime story, now in a delightful edition filled with pop-up surprises.

a complete delight 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

What a book! Where to start explaining why I adore it? A frazzled mother, picky (but not obnoxious) children, a house overflowing with messes and love. Beautifully written with none of the dreary, predictable rhymes found in too many children's books. A storyline of a mother coping as well as she can for as long as she can, finally blowing her cool, and her maturing children stepping up to accept new responsibilities. Ahhh.

Without Marla Frazee's illustrations, the book would still be good, but the illustrations are even more wonderful than the words. The mom is persistent, hardworking, loving. She has a Zen-like serenity, MOST of the time. I love that she's taller than the dad, and that she wears Converse All-Stars, and that her hair falls into her face sometimes. The dad is cool, too, even though he isn't a significant part of the text. I love that the trees grow, the cats have kittens, the apple and lemon trees bear fruit. I love that the family is able to get it together so that the mom gets time to play her cello again. She has earned it, that's for sure.

This book is a treasure. Buy it, savor it with your kids. And the next time you are faced with "I'm bored!", enlist your children's help in baking Mrs. Peters' Birthday Cake. There's no recipe, but start with oatmeal, applesauce, milk, eggs, etc... you may need to add a bit of baking powder, and some sugar. Just wing it. Even if it doesn't turn out "pink and plump and perfect," you will have done something pretty cool with your kids. With luck, they will even help in cleaning it up afterward.

Editorial Review:

Peter wants only milk, Lucy won't settle for anything but homemade lemonade, and Jack is stuck on applesauce. Each new addition to the Peters household brings a new demand for a special meal.
What's a mother to do? Even though Mrs. Peters picks, peels, strains, scrapes, poaches, fries, and kneads, the requests for special foods keep coming. It isn't until her birthday arrives that a present from her children solves the problem with a hilarious surprise that pleases everyone.

This book literally changed my life 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

In a very real way, this book changed my life. I still remember the exact moment. I was 7 years old and went to a friend's house to play. She was reading when I got there. Reading? That was just something you did when your teacher's made you.... Well, she handed me Misty and from that moment on I was hooked. I have been an avid reader since that book showed me what amazing worlds could be found between the pages of a book.

Editorial Review:

Nobody could capture the Phantom. She was the wildest mare on Assateague Island. They said she was like the wind, that the white "map" on her shoulders was her mark of freedom.

Paul and Maureen Beebe had their hearts set on owning her. They were itching to buy and tame her, and worked hard to earn the money that she would cost. But the roundup men had tried to capture her and for two years she had escaped them....

Pony Penning Day holds a surprise for everyone, for Paul not only brings in the Phantom, but her newborn colt as well. Can Paul and Maureen possibly earn enough to buy them both?

Great story - Better message. 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 18 people found this review helpful.

This is the first chapter book for kids by Tiki and Ronde Barber. I started getting Tiki and Ronde's fine picture books for my son because he saw Tiki and Ronde speaking about it on MNF. They are quality stories with excellent messages for kids. Tiki and Ronde are role models that a parent can embrace for their character, which is something I am always struggling with when I find sports related books for my son.

Editorial Review:

"Hut! Hut! Go long, Tiki!"

Tiki and Ronde's twelfth summer is winding down -- the nights are gettingshorter and the evenings cooler. That means two things: The first day of junior high is just a few days away, and it's almost the start of footballseason at last. With two championships and an 8-2 season last year, Tiki and Ronde are ready to graduate from the Peewee League and hit the field asstarting players for the Hidden Valley Eagles.

But junior high is a lot bigger than elementary school. The competition forstarting spots is stiff, and seniority rules. If Tiki and Ronde make itpast tryouts and cuts, will they get the chance to play, or will they haveto spend the season watching from the bench with the other seventh graders?

Inspired by the childhood of NFL superstars Tiki and Ronde Barber, Kickoff! is a story of teamwork, perseverance, and what it takes tobe a champion.

Editorial Review:

It's Tiki and Ronde's second year on their junior high school football team, the Hidden Valley Eagles. The eighth-grade season is here, and the boys have come together as a team. Now key starters, Tiki and Ronde are ready for a great season, and with hard work and determination, maybe they will even go all the way to the State Championship!

But when Coach Spangler announces that he has been asked to move up to the high school team, and Mr. Wheeler, the science teacher, is tapped for the head coaching job, the season seems over before it begins. Sure, Coach Wheeler played college football until he was benched by an injury, but it just isn't the same. Tiki wants to give Coach Wheeler a chance, yet the team's loyalties are divided. What does a science teacher know about the game of football? Can the team work together, get behind their new coach, and play smart?

Inspired by the childhood of NFL superstars Tiki and Ronde Barber, Go Long! is a story of teamwork, perseverance, and what it takes to be a champion.

Socks is adorable! 5 out of 5 stars.

My (animal lover) 6 yr old daughter and I listened to Socks on tape in the car. We absolutely LOVED it! Beverly Cleary does an excellent job at portraying the story through the eyes and actions of a loveable cat. It's our favorite story by Cleary.

Editorial Review:

Socks is one happy cat....

He lives with a nice young couple called Brickers who play with him, pet him, feed him treats, and always have a warm lap for him to sit in. Then a new baby joins the family Suddenly, the Brickers are sharing their laps and love with Charles William, and Socks is getting into trouble. He runs from a phantom dog, wrestles with Nana's best wig, and fights Old Taylor the tomcat for his territory. But as Charles William grows, Socks discovers that he has a new friend and a new way to be a part of the family.

A purr-fectly hilarious portrait of life with a baby from a cat's point of view.
