An engaging nonfiction book for young children 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Sisters and Brothers: Sibling Relationships in the Animal World presents all kinds of information and fun facts about animal siblings. For example, did you know that nine-banded armadillos are ALWAYS born as identical quadruplets? Well, did ya? I bet you didn't know that there are no male New Mexico whiptail lizards or that cheetah brothers hunt together throughout their lives while the sisters separate from their families when they're two years old to start their own. Pretty cool, huh?

The book features 19 different species of animals from elephants and beavers to European shrews and giant anteaters. Splendid cut-and-torn paper collage illustrations compliment each paragraph of intriguing information, and a fun caption accompanies each illustration. I especially love the caption by the black widow spider's egg sac: "I'm having my family for dinner..." Eeeeek!

It's a challenge to write engaging nonfiction for young children, and Jenkins and Page have definitely risen to the challenge and created a book that children of all ages will enjoy. Even very young children who may not understand the text will be fascinated by the illustrations. I highly recommend this for any child who loves animals.

Editorial Review:

The award-winning team of What Do You Do with a Tail Like This? and Move! once again create a nonfiction picture book that is amazingly beautiful, fun, and filled with all sorts of interesting facts. Here, Steve Jenkins and Robin Page investigate sibling relationships throughout the animal kingdom. In this book you will learn that anteaters are always only children and nine-banded armadillos are always born as identical quadruplets. You will also learn that falcons play-hunt in the sky and that hyena cubs fight to the death. This is the perfect book for animal lovers young and old!

Editorial Review:

What about me? This question, usually unspoken, lies at the heart of this poignant story, as a young girl attempts to cope with her brother's being ill. Beautifully written and illustrated, the story deals with the many complicated feelings that the well child experiences in such a situation: guilt about having somehow caused the illness; fear that the sibling will die; anger over being left out; anxiety about catching the illness; and longing for life to return to the way it was. What About Me? provides parents and their well children an opportunity to take some time out for one another and to forge a renewed sense of family.

Not as AP friendly as I hoped 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Seems like a fine book, but not the one for me. I bought this hoping for a book for my son that reflected our family style, (family bed, home birth). I was disappointed that in it the family is preparing a nursery for the baby and it spends several pages discussing the mom and dad leaving the house to go the birth center/hospital to have the baby. Obviously all fine things, but not the things that I was hoping the book would help explain. I found the book spent way too much time talking about how mom was feeling, with only a very brief page showing a picture of the baby in the tummy. For me the only redeeming factor was the mother nursing the baby.

Editorial Review:

Editorial Review:

When Michael Olson's seven-year-old brother Steven came down with juvenile diabetes, Michael and his family was shocked to find out how little information was available to help explain the disease to a child. Michael, who was in third grade at the time, resolved to learn as much as he could about the illness and to write and illustrate his own book based upon Steven's experience. His hope was that hospitals and clinics would give the book to children and families who must suddenly face this life-long illness.

How I Feel is the book both Michael and Steven wished they'd had when Steven's first diagnosis impacted their entire family. In wonderfully evocative cartoons and illustrations that capture the frightening but ultimately hopeful journey on which Steven embarked, Michael depicts Steven's experience. He describes what Steven went through before the disease was discovered, how he felt in hospital and during the recuperation period, and how his life changed once he became a child who would now be insulin dependent.

Michael's book not only presents a definitive understanding of juvenile diabetes in a charming, easy-to-understand way, but is an invaluable resource for those—children, parents, teachers, and doctors—who are dealing with juvenile diabetes.

Editorial Review:

The subtitle of Stop Pretending says it all: "What Happened When My Big Sister Went Crazy." In a sequence of short, intense poems based on the author's own experiences, a 13-year-old girl suffers through her shifting feelings about her sibling's mental illness. She recalls the terror of the Christmas Eve when Sister was suddenly transformed into a stranger; the horror of visiting Sister in the hospital and finding her rocking on all fours; the fear that her friends will find out; her own worry that she, too, may lose her mind; and her wistful memories of Sister as she was before. More complex emotions are also explored, such as her irrational suspicion that Sister may be deliberately acting crazy, as poignantly expressed in the title poem: "Stop pretending./ Right this minute./ Don't you tell me/ you don't know me./ Stop this crazy act/ and show me/ that you haven't changed./ Stop pretending/ you're deranged." Gradually, as Sister begins to recover, the girl is able to find hope and again take pleasure in her own life. Blank verse is perfect for a story with such heightened emotion, and is a format that has been used with great success in other fine novels for teens, notably the Newbery-award winning Out of the Dust, by Karen Hesse, and Robert Cormier's boyhood memoir, Frenchtown Summer. Teen readers may even be so inspired as to try their own hand at this challenging but satisfying form. (Ages 10 and older) --Patty Campbell

Portrait of Love 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

This is one of the best books I have ever read by, for and about a sibling who has autism. Sarah, the young author of this book draws a rich portrait of her day-to-day life with her brother, Evan. She provided all the illustrations for the book and her family is a rich portrait of love and acceptance. The bright colors Sarah uses suggests hope and understanding. I like the way she explains and understands Evan's behavior; she knows he likes to chew on frozen foods and uncooked pasta because he likes the crunchy consistency. She understands Evan's way of communicating; e.g. she identifies the sounds Evan makes in response to certain circumstances, such has his happy humming when he is in water.

I loved the way Sarah used technical terms she learned from Evan's team intervention specialists. When she uses them, she says quite matter-of-factly, "All I know is we have fun." I like the way she interacts with Evan and accepts and loves him unconditionally. All of the things they do together and all of the socialization she unwittingly teaches him through natural example, she is doing it for love and because it's just plain fun. Get this with SUNDAYS WITH MATTHEW.

Editorial Review:

This book comes from the heart of a little girl(Sarah is eight years old)who has grown up with and who, with her parents, has been involved in helping her younger brother with autism to learn. The book is a testament to the parental support that has fostered a strong positive relationship between Sarah and her brother, with the result that even at a very young age, Sarah has become a strong advocate for Evan and other children with autism.

One of my favorites 5 out of 5 stars.

I love this book! I have read it so many times, my book has fallen apart, and I have had to purchase a new one. This book is such a touching story about courage and the love between siblings. I am a football fan which does help, but even those who don't understand the game of football, can understand this story of compassion and selfless giving. I don't care how many times I read this book, I cry at the end, even though I know what is coming. READ THIS BOOK!!!

Editorial Review:

Together, they won college football's highest award.

This is a true, memorable, compassionate story of courage and love between two brothers. In 1973, while John Cappelletti was winning the Heisman Trophy as the outstanding college football player in America, his younger brother Joey was suffering from leukemia. But John, now a running back for the Los Angeles Rams, had a very special medicine for Joey. It was called touchdowns. And John scored them in bunches because they were "Something for Joey." The story of the Cappelletti family is a story of courage you will never forget.

Helped my 11-year old daughter with her feelings 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

My 11 year old daughter read this book and even asked if she could read some of "her favorite essays" to us - she is the older sibling of our 2 year old little girl who was born 17 weeks early and she has cerebral palsy, blindness, deafness, is tube-fed and chronically ill. Her favorite stories were of the ones that she could most relate to - like the little boy who said he did not understand why his sibling was so ill when she was born. I think it made my daughter feel like it was okay for her to have bad and good emotions about her little sister. I think it validated them.

Excellent book for everyone. 5 out of 5 stars.

Donald Meyer has compiled a wonderful book of essays from siblings of disabled children. My thirty year old son bought me this book for my birthday. Growing up, I too was one of these children and would have truly benefitted from anything that would have explained what happened to our family. As one of these sibs, I had to grapple with guilt, embarassment and also neglect from my parents due to the resources, both financial and emotional that were poured into my sister's handicap. My heart goes out to both parents and siblings of exceptional children. It is so much pain to bear for them and they feel even worse about complaining because they are "normal."

Editorial Review:

"I can't imagine having a plain old sister," writes Ryan Clearwater, age ten, in one of the 45 essays in Views from Our Shoes. Ryan and the other boys and girls whose essays are featured in this collection range in age from four to eighteen. They share their experiences as the brother or sister of someone with a disability-the good and bad aspects, as well as many thoughtful observations.

Editorial Review:

(2006 Independent Publishers Book Awards: Finalist in Juvenile-Teen-Y/A Non-Fiction category) Give teenagers a chance to say what's on their minds, and you might be surprised by what you hear. That's exactly what Don Meyer, creator of Sibshops and author of VIEWS FROM OUR SHOES did when he invited together a group of 80 teenagers, from all over the United States and abroad, to talk about what it's like to have a brother or sister with special needs. Their unedited words are found in THE SIBLING SLAM BOOK, a brutally honest, non-PC look at the lives, experiences, and opinions of siblings without disabilities. Formatted like the slam books passed around in many junior high and high schools, this one poses a series of 50 personal questions along the lines of: What should we know about you? What do you tell your friends about your sib's disability? What's the weirdest question you have ever been asked about your sib? If you could change one thing about your sib (or your sib's disability) what would it be? What annoys you most about how people treat your sib? THE SIBLING SLAM BOOK doesn't slam in the traditional sense of the word. The tone and point-of-view of the answers are all over the map. Some answers are assuredly positive, a few are strikingly negative, but most reflect the complex and conflicted mix of emotions that come with the territory. Whether they read it cover to cover or sample it at random, teenagers will surely find common ground among these pages and reassurance that they are not alone. It is a book that parents, friends, and counselors can feel confident recommending to any teenager with a brother or sister with a disability.

Awesome principles for teen girls! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

CeCe Winans hits the nail on the head with this cute, fun, yet relavent devotional! She targets the very important topic of how to carry oneself as a daughter of God. This is important knowledge as it affects a girl's self-esteem, friendships, and romantic relationships. Every girl (and woman) needs to know who she is in God's eyes and how that affects her view of self and others. I mentor 3 teen girls at church and bought a copy for each--great book!
