Editorial Review:

More than twenty-five years after its first appearance, "Cajun Night Before Christmas" has become a modern classic that has sold more than 490,000 copies and has served as the model for Pelican's ongoing, best-selling "Night Before Christmas series."

The formula that started this success story is surprisingly simple: take the classic story of jolly old St. Nicholas, place it in a Louisiana bayou, dress Santa Claus in muskrat "from his head to his toes," pile his skiff high with toys, and hitch it to eight friendly alligators. The result is a delightful twist on an old and familiar tale. It is Christmas on the bayou.

James Rice (1934-2004), in his long, distinguished career as an author and illustrator, produced fifty-plus children's books, among them an addition to the "Night Before Christmas series", "Gullah Night Before Christmas." With more than a million and a half copies of his books in print, he ranks among the nation's best-selling creators of children's books. Mr. Rice died at his home in Hico, Texas in May 2004.

Excellent book!!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book gives the reader a very brief view of history and how the evils of this world has a domino effect on us all. It also reminds us that we [humans] can survive in the worst of times with the help of family and friends. It is well written and gives you a good mental image of what you are reading.

Great book goes well with the DVD movie, 5 out of 5 stars.

The Devil's Arithmetic (Puffin Modern Classics)
The book is very easy to read, goes pretty well with the DVD movie. I used this book The Devil's Arithmetic, DVD movie, and the downloaded study guide in my English high school and middle school classes in my World War II Holocaust unit with: Night by Elie Wiesel, and Raoul Wallenberg: The Man Who Stopped Death Excellent resource for students to get a personal connection to World War II via the main character Hanna who is an high school teen ager who travels back to Poland and experiences the death camp.

Editorial Review:

Hannah thinks tonight’s Passover Seder will be the same as always. Little does she know that this year she will be mysteriously transported into the past where only she knows the horrors that await.

Editorial Review:

It’s1953 and 11-year-old Penny dreams of a summer of butter pecan ice cream, swimming, and baseball. But nothing’s that easy in Penny’s family. For starters, she can’t go swimming because her mother’s afraid she’ll catch polio at the pool. To make matters worse, her favorite uncle is living in a car. Her Nonny cries every time her father’s name is mentioned. And the two sides of her family aren’t speaking to each other!

Inspired by Newbery Honor winner Jennifer Holm’s own Italian American family, Penny from Heaven is a shining story about the everyday and the extraordinary, about a time in America’s history, not all that long ago, when being Italian meant that you were the enemy. But most of all, it’s a story about families—about the things that tear them apart and bring them together. And Holm tells it with all the richness and the layers, the love and the laughter of a Sunday dinner at Nonny’s. So pull up a chair and enjoy the feast! Buon appetito!

a long trip home from vacation made short 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This cd made a 6+ hour ride home from vacation fly by. My 6 year old daughter asked if the trip home was about an hour and when I told her it was more than 6 hours she could not believe it. My 9 year old son, husband and I also enjoyed listening to every word. This is a great cd which will be used over and over in our home. The reader did a great job and it was a delight to listen to.

my all time favorite! 4 out of 5 stars.

I purchased this CD so that my fourth-graders could listen to this while they were following along in their book. It is great! This is one of my all time favorite Laura Ingalls books in her series, so was glad to see Amazon had it on CD.

Editorial Review:

Pa Ingalls decides to sell the little log house, and the family sets out for Indian country! They travel from Wisconsin to Kansas, and there, finally, Pa builds their little house on the prairie. Sometimes farm life is difficult, even dangerous, but Laura and her family are kept busy and happy with the promise of their new life on the prairie.

Little House on the Prairie is the second book in the Laura Years series.

Molly is the Best 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Molly's Pilgrim is the best book! Molly is a little Jewish girl from Russia. She doesn't like to go to school because the girls are teasing her. There are no other Jewish girls at Winter Hill and they think she looks and talks different. She wishes she could go back to Russia or even New York City. Molly had an assignment to make a clothespin Pilgrim doll. Her mom made it to look like herself-because mama sees herself as a Pilgrim from Russia. Molly thinks the doll is beautiful but is also ashamed of the doll because she doesn't think it is a real Pilgrim. She brings it to school and hides it in her desk. When Elizabeth and her friends see it, they make fun of it. Molly explains to Miss Stickly that her mother made the doll to look like her because she came from Russia for freedom just like the Pilgrims. Miss Stickly praises it and puts it in a special place on her desk. This makes Molly proud. We loved this book!!

Editorial Review:

Sparkling new illustrations refresh this Thanksgiving classic based on the true experience of a member of Barbara Cohen's family. The touching story tells how recent immigrant Molly leads her third-grade class to discover that it takes all kinds of pilgrims to make a Thanksgiving. Originally published in 1983, Molly's Pilgrim inspired the 1986 Academy Award winning live-action short film.

A wonderful story, even if the illos have some bloopers... 4 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This is the story of a loving friendship between an elderly Jewish lady from Poland named Mrs. Katz, and an African-American child named Larnel. Mrs. Katz lives alone in her apartment and doesn't have anyone to visit her. (It's not stated in the book, but, since this appears to be a predominantly African-American inner city neighborhood, one wonders if she was left behind by the Jewish community when the more affluent members moved to the suburbs? In real life it has happened...) Larnel's mother stops by to visit her every other day or so, and brings Larnel with her.

One day, Larnel gets the idea to give Mrs. Katz a kitten from the litter that was born in the basement of his apartment building. (Get the pun -- Katz/cats? Actually, the name "Katz" has nothing to do with "cats," but it's cute anyway.) Mrs. Katz names the kitten Tush, which is Yiddish for "bottom," because it has no tail. Larnel agrees to help her care for Tush, and from this sharing, a lifelong friendship grows.

The story is well-written, the characters are well-developed and "real." The illustrations are vibrant, beautifully done, and ethnically accurate. Well, almost. There are a couple Jewish bloopers. For one thing, the menorah sitting by Mrs. Katz's window only has seven branches. A Hanukkah menorah has nine -- eight for the eight days plus an extra for the "servant" candle. The seven-branched menorah mentioned in the Bible was specifically for the Jerusalem Temple, and is not usually found in the home. Since Hanukkah was mentioned in the story, I have to assume that this was supposed to be a Hanukkah menorah.

The second blooper is the scene in the bakery. Mrs. Katz is shopping for PASSOVER -- a time when no leaven is to be found anywhere in a Jewish home. It is not just a matter of eating matzoh. The entire house is cleaned of anything even resembling leaven, and even owning leavened products is forbidden. That being the case, why is she shopping for her Passover feast in a bakery, of all places? She is clearly pointing at a cake or some rolls, and these would NOT be served on Passover! So nu, maybe she's a Reform Jew and not so strict? But in that case, why is that very Hasidic-looking gentleman in the corner shopping there? Surely HE would not serve bread for Passover! (...)

These are relatively minor quibbles, given the overall good quality of the book. But when it comes to children's books, I insist on total accuracy with regard to Judaism, because these are the images that will stick in the mind for years to come. Granted, this is not a "Jewish" book per se, it's a multicultural book -- which is all the more reason to pay more attention to the Jewish details, lest the reader(s) be misled. For the bloopers I'm docking it a star, but it's still a great story and I highly recommend it to both Jews and gentiles.

Editorial Review:

Larnel doesn't know his neighbor, Mrs. Katz, very well, until he asks her to adopt an abandoned kitten. Mrs. Katz agrees on one condition: that Larnel help her take care of the kitten she names Tush. When Larnel starts spending more and more time with Mrs. Katz to help with Tush, Mrs. Katz tells him stories about coming to America from Poland and about the good times she spent with her late husband. As Larnel grows to love Mrs. Katz, he also learns about the suffering and triumph black history shares with the Jewish heritage.

Rhodopis of Antiquity 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is not "racist". The fairy tale is based upon the tale of "Rhodopis", Greek word for 'rosy cheek or sunburned', in antiquity. "Rhodopis" stories were popular Greek tales among ancient Greeks since the 6th century BC, told in different versions. A well told account in one of these older versions had her finance a pyramid in her honor, the Pyramid of Mycerinus or Menkera. Shirley Climo's version is based upon these versions of "Rhodopis", Strabo's "Rhodopis" is an archetypal Cinderella from the 1st century BC. He immortalized a woman by the same name in what historians consider the first "Cinderella" basing his story on both facts and fictions. The woman who's story is somewhat based upon was believed to be the beautiful Rhodopis born in Northern Greece, kidnapped by pirates, sold to a man on the island of Samos, a fellow slave, a homely little man called Aesop, used to tell her stories of animals. When she was grown the man in Samos sold the girl in Naucratis, bought by Charaxos in Egypt who spoiled her as if she was his own daughter giving presents of jewels and beautiful clothes, she later married a Pharaoh. She is of whom some Greeks believed the Pyramid of Mycerinus or Menkera were build by, while others dispute this. One thing can not be disputed is that by Strabo times and many centuries afterwards, "Rhodopis" was renowned through out ancient Greece and Rome for her beauty, promoting various different versions of "Rhodopis" stories. The wind according to Strabo takes away one of her rose red slippers, an eagle according to Aelian's version. It is a historical fact that a Greek maiden did marry Pharaoh Amasis (Dynasty XXVI, 570-536 BC), Amasis was actually the king's Greek name. His birth name was Ahmose II, who was of common origins. She was the princess Ladice, daughter of King Battus II from the Greek colony Cyrene. As to the comment regarding the inhabitants of ancient Egypt would have been of " African, Mediterranean, Semitic, or Arabic descent and dark-hued", true in most cases but not always true when it comes to Greeks, Romans or other Mediterranean people; yes some are of "dark hue" but some are also very fair and Greeks definitely are not "African, Semitic, or Arabic" in descent, especially Cleopatra and the Ptolemies, given their habit of inter marrying with one another. Plus many ancient writers make a point to describe Rhodopis as having fairer coloring and "different looking" from native Egyptians because Greeks, of whom Cleopatra and the Ptolemies descent from, were different looking and fairer in coloring from native Egyptians. The story has a Greek as the "heroine" because the audience of whom Strabo and most of these ancient authors were speaking to, including the Hellenistic Pharaohs of the Ptolemy Dynasty, were of Greek origins.

Editorial Review:

Climo has woven this ancient tale, a mixture of fact and myth, with clarity and eloquence. The beauty of the language is set off to perfection by Heller's arresting illustrations. A stunning combination of fluent prose and exquisitely wrought illustrations [that makes] a winner for story hours, as well as a useful resource for the study of Cinderella through the ages." ?SLJ.

Editorial Review:

When Disney comes looking for five teenagers to serve as actors for a new technology-Daylight Hologram Images, or DHIs-there is more to it than meets the eye. Strange things have been happening inside the Florida park: parts from one ride are found mysteriously moved to another; in the Fantasmic! show, the dragon unexplainably triumphs over Mickey; little blips in story lines and "offstage" antics by characters trouble managers. Finn Whitman, a middle-schooler, goes to sleep one night and has the dream of a lifetime: he "wakes up" inside Disney World as his DHI character, a glowing hologram. He meets an old man there, Wayne, who claims to be one of the original Imagineers and explains to Finn that he "and your friends" have a mission to save the park from forces that humans can neither see nor hear. Not believing his dream, but not totally discounting it, Finn, back in real life, sets out to find the four other kids who were chosen to be DHIs and in doing so he learns an eerie fact: he is not alone in this "dream." The others have had similar experiences. What if this is for real?

Careful 3 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

Be careful when looking for Thomas books. There are many different formats. Picturebacks(Read to Me series) and there is a Pictureback READER which are quite different. (See Cranky Day review) There is also The Big Blue Treasury which is different still. It has more words than the reader, but just as big of pictures and no where near the text of the Read to Me series. Amazon doesn't always have them listed as Read to Me, so check for the triangle at the top of the book cover.

Three Classic Thomas Stories 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

It is interesting that different people have different takes on the same stories. Unlike the previous reviewer (below) I really liked this book. (And of course, my son loves it.)

James and the Red Balloon
Thomas is excited about this new method of transportation, but he begins to be worried about being replaced when James expresses his concern.

James inadvertently ends up saving the balloon when it runs out of air; and the balloon ends up bringing more business for the Steamies.

--I used this as a learning time by pointing out that if is best to wait and get facts about a situation before going off half-cocked.

Harvey to the Rescue
--I simply love this story. First it is hard not to love this lantern-jawed strong man (eh...engine). I also like that Thomas is so kind and considerate in this story (unlike some others in which I'd like to put him into time-out.LOL)

Harvey is new and strange and the Steamies are not all that nice. Harvey is saddened by their lack of friendliness; but Thomas wisely points out that sometimes it takes time to make new friends.

And sure enough, the crew comes around after Harvey does his stuff and saves Percy. They find out that different is good.

Thomas and the Jet Engine
--I don't know if there is some message here that can be used for teaching. In my opinion, this story is just about silliness. If Lucy (from "I Love Lucy" TV show) had been a train, this would no doubt have been an episode.

Perhaps it was written simply to give little Thomas his wish of, for once, being the fastest train on Sodor. Sort of an empowerment statement for young kids.

Five Stars. Two good learning opportunities (imho), plus some classic Sodor silliness.

Editorial Review:

Straight from the latest Thomas video comes three delightful new tales from the Island of Sodor. Thomas fans will laugh when James gets carried away about a balloon, Harvey rescues Percy, and Thomas becomes a jet engine! Filled with gentle humor and lots of photo illustrations.

Christmas with a Belsnickle twist 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Clement C. Moore's "A Visit From St. Nicholas" (or, as it's more commonly known, "'Twas the Night Before Christmas") is forever etched in the minds of everyone who loves Christmas. Over the years, this famous poem has been adapted to various cultures around the world, to better suit the customs, languages and holiday nuances of the people who live there.

Chet Williamson tackles the Pennsylvania Dutch (primarily Amish and Mennonite) community with a broad wink and grin in "A Pennsylvania Dutch Night Before Christmas." Adhering closely to the style, rhythm and basic storyline of Moore's original piece, Williamson sets his version around the Belsnickle, an often-stern parallel to Santa Claus who distributes candies and handmade toys to the good children and switches for whippings to the bad. This version, lovingly and warmly illustrated by James Rice, inserts plenty of humor into the story; just imagine, if you will, a wagon pulled by a team of cows resting comfortably on your typical residential roof! And it turns out the children in this story don't earn switches, anyway.

For Christmas with a twist, keep a copy of "A Pennsylvania Dutch Night Before Christmas" under your tree. It's a hoot, even if you're not from Lancaster County, PA!

by Tom Knapp, Rambles.NET editor

Editorial Review:

This retelling of the Christmas classic by Clement C. Moore blends Santa Claus with the traditional Pennsylvania Dutch figure of the Belsnickel, a thin, cantankerous old man who visits children before Christmas and rewards or punishes them based on their behavior.

The fun begins Christmas Eve when the Belsnickel arrives on an old-fashioned plow pulled by cows and steers. Havoc and humor erupt when the Yuletide load proves a little too heavy for the farmer’s roof! The distinctive Pennsylvania Dutch dialect and the hilarious antics of the crotchety old Belsnickel will make this new addition to Pelican’s regional Night Before Christmas series a holiday favorite your family will enjoy reading aloud again and again.
