Not just for kids.... 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I had to add my two cents here. I see all of these reviews from kids or people who bought the book for a kid. I am 25 and am collecting the entire series. These books are beautifully done, informational and just plain fun to read and look through. Anyone with interest in mythology, literature and history would adore this series. It is attention getting for the young, but it is also academic enough for the adults. They are not patronizing or low leveled that would steer adult readers away. The tongue-in-cheek approach of the advertising inside can relegate the book to the younger crowd, but adults-you too can LOVE this book!

Editorial Review:

Dragonology is presented as a faux-scholarly book with everything you ever wanted to know about dragons. Purporting to be the actual writings of English Dragonologist, Dr. Ernest Drake, this book is filled with exquisite illustrations, fascinating faux-facts, a dragon alphabet, runes to decipher, lift-up flaps, and maps to explore. Covering everything from dragon habitats, physiology and behavior to finding, tracking, taming, and flying them. A really fun book for the Harry Potter crowd and anyone enamored of Dragons. Hardcover, 32 pages. (Ages 8+)

Wonderful! Appropriate for all ages! 5 out of 5 stars.

As a third grade teacher, this book was a useful tool in teaching about Christmas Around the World. There are so few good books on this topic, and my students enjoyed the one page synopsis of Christmas for each of the countries discussed (about 10). The illustrations for each country are wonderful and vivid. We were able to learn about customs from these countries not usually presented in other books. I would recommend this book to any teacher, parent, or child seeking information about Christmas customs in countries around the world in this enjoyable and fact-filled book.

Festive 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a fun book and I would recommend it to anyone interested in Christmas. The book looks at 12 countries around the world where Christmas is celebrated on a national scale. One reads brief, but detailed, summaries of the Christmas events and traditions of those countries. From religious celebrations to marketplace customs, and from tasty foods to fun crafts, one is presented with a vivid and enlightening picture of how poeple around the world celebrate the holiday.

The physical book itself is well made and festive. Each page is colorful and has vibrant paintings of Christmas events in each culture. The type is small, so parents would need to read this to their younger kids. To help readers, the author has included a pronunciation guide in the back. There is also a "fact and fiction" section about common Christmas things which serves as a reference for those who may never have heard of Epiphany or even Jesus Christ. Fun and simple craft guidelines are also included.

While this is a book about Christmas, it is not a religious book (which disappointed me). It mentions religious events associated with Christmas, but treats it holiday as if it is essentially a cultural event. Nevertheless, it is a fun book that is very educational. It would be a great book to have to bring out to display and enjoy at Christmastime.

A good and well written cognitive behavioral plan to help children and adolescents control their anger and behavior. May be hard to use by children without the guide and motivation of an adult.Excellent material to be used by a psychotherapist. Adults may easily apply these same principles to enhance their own self control.

Editorial Review:

Did you know that anger is like fire? It starts with a spark, igniting us with energy and purpose. But it can also blaze out of control, causing lots of problems. If you're a kid whose temper quickly flares, a kid whose anger gets too big, too hot, too fast, this book is for you. What to Do When Your Temper Flares guides children and their parents through the cognitive-behavioral techniques used to treat problems with anger. Engaging examples, lively illustrations, and step-by-step instructions teach children a set of "anger dousing" methods aimed at cooling angry thoughts and controlling angry actions, resulting in calmer, more effective kids. This interactive self-help book is the complete resource for educating, motivating, and empowering children to work toward change.

Good sense! Don't leave home without it! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

A Smart Girl's Guide to Sticky Situations is an absolutely wonderful book for preteens about some of the weird situations that people of any age can find themselves in. With very appealingly silly illustrations, the book covers the expected items like flunking a test, not getting picked for a team, looking goofy in photos, etc.

However, there are some serious situations that are beautifully handled. For example, information about what to do if you are separated from your family in the city could save a child's life. Knowing how to handle false accusations could save a child's sanity!

Little sidebars called "Disaster Blasters" provide information to prevent all manner of inconvenience, embarrassment and grief! While some reviewers have stated that this is merely a compilation of common sense, keep in mind that maturity comes with age and experience, and this book is aimed at a very young audience.

I really do wish that I had this book, myself, many years ago, and I highly recommend it for any young lady in your family circle.

Hitting Hands 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book for my 22 month old who has learned that hitting is an "effective" way to get his big brother's attention. My son is fascinated with this book and obviously gets the message. We have a few other books from this series and love them.

good book for generating dialog 4 out of 5 stars.

I saw this book recently featured in an article in a print periodical about child development

We've recently had minor problems with our 4-year old son acting out after preschool on days when he had been picked on by other kids. We got the book and used it is a bedtime story. It generated good dialogue (as good as you get with a 4-year old) and it made him think before he acted. It gave him some tools to use with the more physical kids so he resolves the problem in the moment without resorting to aggression. Wthat he doesn't have to resort to acting out to make the behavior stop. I am glad that I purchased this book.

We bought also 'Words Are Not for Hurting' and that one was not as useful for generating dialog.

Editorial Review:

In this gentle, encouraging book, simple words and warm, inviting full-color illustrations teach children that violence is never okay and they can learn to manage their anger. There's also a special section for adults, with ideas for things to talk about and activities to do together. Recommended for day-care, preschool, kindergarten, and early elementary school classrooms and the home.

practical, fun and easy to put into practice 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I gifted my 12 year old niece with this book. I wasn't sure how she was going to respond to a book about cleaning up her mess of a bedroom but the ideas are straight forward, fun and easy to put into practice. She immediately read several of the sections and went about setting her space up into 'zones'. We have done several of the craftier ideas together, spending time doing a fun project, while all the while working towards a more organized space.

What a great book! My daughter took it from the mailbox straight to her room and read it cover to cover! Within a day her room was right on track to experience complete clutter removal! I was so impressed!

Editorial Review:

This guide shows girls how to get organized and cut clutter from their backpacks, lockers, and bedrooms. They'll learn how to tame paper piles, find new homes for things they've outgrown, and make cute crafts to store everything from books to bracelets. The label stickers at the back of the book also help girls straighten things up with style.

Sarah Morton's Day: A Day in the life of a Pilgrim Girl and its partner books about Samuel Eaton a Pilgrim boy and Tapenum"s Day about a Wampanoag Indian boy are excellent. I used all three in teaching about Massachusetts history. The books are well researched. The setting is Plymouth Plantation where reenactors wear authentic clothing and use authentic reproductions of tools, furniture, etc. The books depict children's work, play, families, homes and clothing. The books should be in every school library.

Brings history to life! 5 out of 5 stars.

Sarah Morton's Day: A Day in the Life of a Pilgrom Girl is an exceptional teaching tool for the young "history detectives" in your circle. Textbooks are never enough. What better way to understand that the "story" of history happened to real people who looked just like us, had needs and families just like us, but lived a different lifestyle because of the time in which they lived.

Follow this up with a visit to a museum, and the story of our history becomes very real!

This is a wonderful book, and I highly recommend it.

Editorial Review:

Text and photographs of Plimouth Plantation follow a pilgrim girl through a typical day as she milks the goats, cooks and serves meals, learns her letters, and adjusts to her new stepfather.

Targeting New Age Hooey to Your Babies 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 14 people found this review helpful.

This book might mention "God", but it leads children (and adults) to believe they are their own gods. (So why do bad things happen to good people even if they think positive and are "good"? Face it, no matter how much New Age self-help you indulge in, it will not ultimately save you or help you live forever.)

I was given a copy of this book for my kids. Looked benign, but I read through it myself first before reading it to them. It's got a feel-good message to it that lacks deeper wisdom of the REAL world and REAL solutions to the world's problems, even at the close community level. It's dangerous New Age poison packaged sweetly for children. Satan wants your children too, you know. This subtle, seemingly sweet and positive book is a wolf in sheep's clothes.

Everything about this book tells your child, "The world revolves around you." Does it really? People, you do not have to love yourself before you love someone else. The world would be better off if we concentrated on others instead of ourselves. . .

Sure, I want to teach my children they are loved unconditionally and help them to see the true fount from which self-esteem comes, but this book is not it. The self-help, New Age books from this publisher are making someone rich at the expense of our common desperation to find answers and unconditional love.

I threw this in the garbage without showing it to my children. I'd prefer reading some real character builders that entertain and challenge my kids to think and act than read them this oversimplified New Age poison.

Straight in the trash.

Editorial Review:

Internationally renowned author and speaker in the field of self-development, Dr. Wayne W. Dyer has written a book just for kids. Beautifully illustrated, Incredible You uses simple, uplifting rhymes to give kids their own tools for creating happiness.

Editorial Review:

Written by Lynne Cheney, author and wife of Vice President Richard Cheney, to honor this "beautiful land made more beautiful still by our commitment to freedom," America: A Patriotic Primer is a proud celebration of the individuals, milestones, and principles of this nation. Each busy spread features elaborately decorated letters of the alphabet, with one or two kids draped over its bars and loops, along with the highlighted concept or person: "N is for Native Americans, who came here first," "T is for Tolerance." Surrounding every letter is a veritable circus of entertaining and useful related information, illustrated by Robin Preiss Glasser (Alexander, Who's Not (Do You Hear Me? I Mean It!) Going to Move). "J is for Jefferson," for example, is bordered with biographical details and quotations from Thomas Jefferson, while mini images depict the third president's famous home (Monticello), some of his inventions, and a description of the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom. This compelling picture book will work best as a supplement for children who are already immersed in basic American history at school. Teachers and parents will enjoy exploring with their kids every inch of the detailed, hand-drawn and illustrated U.S. map found in "U is for United States," explaining and elaborating on the historical lessons as appropriate. Values for today from a tale of 1627 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

This is a wonderful, wonderful book. It will help you teach your children about hard work, perseverance, and family. My children want it read to them again and again.

Young Samuel Eaton (a historical character) is looking forward to his first chance to help his father bring in the crops. He finds the work incredibly hard, and the coarse grain raises bad blisters on his hands. But he perseveres, and at the end of the day when his father tells him "you did a man's work today, Samuel," we feel his pride.

Masterfully written, beautifully photographed, this is a gem in every way.

An excellent book for learning about life as a pilgrim boy! 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This book took us back to 1627. We learned all about Samuel Eaton's first day as a man. He told us all about the hard work he had to do in the fields. It was so interesting to read a story that used different words from long ago. The pictures were awesome! They showed us the clothing the pilgrims wore, what their house looked like, and the hard work everybody did. We thought it would be difficult to be a pilgrim boy! We think everyone should read this book because you can learn a lot about how the pilgrims lived. Read this wonderful book!

Editorial Review:

When the day in which he is to help with his first rye harvest approaches, young Samuel Eaton is so excited that he can hardly sleep, but his blistering tasks prove harder than expected. Reprint. H. SLJ.
