Editorial Review:

There is nothing lonelier than a cat who has been loved, at least for a while, and then abandoned on the side of the road.

A calico cat, about to have kittens, hears the lonely howl of a chained-up hound deep in the backwaters of the bayou. She dares to find him in the forest, and the hound dares to befriend this cat, this feline, this creature he is supposed to hate. They are an unlikely pair, about to become an unlikely family. Ranger urges the cat to hide underneath the porch, to raise her kittens there because Gar-Face, the man living inside the house, will surely use them as alligator bait should he find them. But they are safe in the Underneath...as long as they stay in the Underneath.

Kittens, however, are notoriously curious creatures. And one kitten's one moment of curiosity sets off a chain of events that is astonishing, remarkable, and enormous in its meaning. For everyone who loves Sounder, Shiloh, and The Yearling, for everyone who loves the haunting beauty of writers such as Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, Flannery O'Connor, and Carson McCullers, Kathi Appelt spins a harrowing yet keenly sweet tale about the power of love -- and its opposite, hate -- the fragility of happiness and the importance of making good on your promises.

QUEEN FOR A DAY ? 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Young Ruby is a bit of a disaster. She doesn't mean to be, it's just that she believes fingers were made before forks. So, it's easy for food not only to wind up in her mouth but also in her hair. She doesn't have much use for napkins, and she talks with her mouth full.

Nonetheless, she is adorable and absolutely over the top when she receives an invitation to have tea with the Queen. Obviously, Ruby's manners need some polishing before sitting down with her majesty. So, everyone who knows her has a bit of advice- "Ruby, I hope you won't interrupt...I hope you'll sit up straight...I hope you won't shout," etc. All of this is a great deal for her to absorb.

Finally, the big day arrives. Young readers will be surprised at what it's like to have tea with the Queen.

Robin Preiss Glasser's illustrations are irresistible, filling every page with color. She's a generous illustrator and exuberantly captures all of Ruby's preparations.

Editorial Review:

That Ruby! Wherever she goes, table cloths accidentally pull dishes to the floor, flowers get trampled and spaghetti somehow end up in her hair. You can't take Ruby anywhere! One sunny morning, the postman brings Ruby an amazing invitation to have tea with -- the Queen! Ruby had better polish her manners and quickly. Will Ruby really be ready in time?

Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, and Robin Preiss Glasser know a thing or two about the importance of manners and poise and being ladylike. In Tea For Ruby, they have created the irrepressible Ruby, whose antics and foibles with touch readers' hearts as she tries her very best to do things correctly. In the end, she knows she is loved for who she is, and that she will always be a princess, royal or not!

Teaches polite responses in a fun way 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

A book-loving toddler will delight in lifting the full-page flaps and repeating the polite phrases--some in response to silly requests. I have received more "No thank yous" and "Yes pleases" since reading this book with my child.

We LOVE this book! 5 out of 5 stars.

My daughter and I have been reading Karen Katz books together since she was able to sit up. This is an excellent addition to our collection! My daughter is now two-and-a-half, and she just LOVES the lift-a-flaps in these books. We have been working on manners, so this book is perfect. After reading these books a few times together, my daughter is able to read it back to me from memory, and she feels so proud when she finishes a book by herself. I highly recommend this and all of the Karen Katz books!!

Editorial Review:

"Please" and "thank you" are fun and easy to remember with Excuse Me!. Simple and repetitive, it's the perfect way to introduce those magic words that all little ones should know. From burping to breaking a sibling's toy, toddlers will love seeing these appealing babies in situations they know all about, and they'll have fun lifting the flaps to discover the right words to say-"Excuse me!" and "I'm sorry!"

For Adults - wonderful 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Our seven year old son just lost a four year battle against cancer. A friend gave me this book and it was a perfect recipe for grieving. I can't say enough good about it and its effect on me.

I'm not convinced that this is a book for children. The concepts and illustrations are too strong perhaps. (My 9yr old daughter is emotionally mature - but I'm not sure if I'll share this with her until she's older.) There are other more appropriate book for kids.

I think this is an amazing picture book for adults to realize and understand their own grieving process - without reading a textbook. I fetched my biggest crab-pot from the cupboard and plan to mke my own Tear Soup.

A beautiful gift for those who grieve 5 out of 5 stars.

I heard about this book from a nurse who learned of the passing of my firstborn baby. I have since ordered twelve, and have given them to people who are traveling own their path of grief as a way to honor my son's memory. It's a beautiful book and timely even when the loss is no longer recent. It addresses the many stages of grief and how there is no one "right" way to grieve. The ilustrations enhance the message in a very touching way.

Impulse is a hit! 4 out of 5 stars.

I just love reading Ellen Hopkins books. Although Crank and Glass are my favorites, Impulse is a very close third. I love that we get three perspectives in this novel. The way that Ellen is able to reach teenage audiences impresses me every time. I will continue to buy and recommend all her books to my high school students. Thanks Ellen!!

Editorial Review:

Sometimes you don't wake up. But if you happen to, you know things will never be the same.

Three lives, three different paths to the same destination: Aspen Springs, a psychiatric hospital for those who have attempted the ultimate act -- suicide.

Vanessa is beautiful and smart, but her secrets keep her answering the call of the blade.

Tony, after suffering a painful childhood, can only find peace through pills.

And Conner, outwardly, has the perfect life. But dig a little deeper and find a boy who is in constant battle with his parents, his life, himself.

In one instant each of these young people decided enough was enough. They grabbed the blade, the bottle, the gun -- and tried to end it all. Now they have a second chance, and just maybe, with each other's help, they can find their way to a better life -- but only if they're strong and can fight the demons that brought them here in the first place.

Great Books 5 out of 5 stars.

The Sisterhood of the traveling pants series is a great read for girls. I didn't want the books to end. I felt like I knew each of the girls. Young adults and teen girls will love these books.

Great Read 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This was a great series of books. She really keeps you interested and wanting to read the next chapter because each character gets a small piece in each chapter so you really stay engaged. It took me a week to read all four!!

Editorial Review:

LENA, CARMEN, BRIDGET, and Tibby have been through a lot together. But even after traveling across the world to keep these four very different friends connected, the pants remain strong, uncuffed—and remarkably flattering. Relive the magic of the pants with these four novels of strength, heartbreak, love, family, and friendship.

Charming and Beautiful Story to Share 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I was delighted by Muth's 'Zen Shorts' and when I read a review for 'The Three Questions' I looked for it immediately and was just thrilled.

Not only is this a lovely story to share with a child, opening the way for discussions about being truly present with the people around us, but this makes for a beautiful gift for an adult friend. I have been so delighted by this retelling of Tolstoy, paired with Muth's beautiful watercolors, that I have purchased this book twice now... and have given each copy away to friends!

Editorial Review:

Nikolai is a boy who believes that if he can find the answers to his three questions, he will always know how to be a good person. His friends--a heron, a monkey, and a dog--try to help, but to no avail, so he asks Leo, the wise old turtle. "When is the best time to do things? Who is the most important one? What is the right thing to do?" Leo doesn't answer directly, but by the end of Nikolai's visit, the boy has discovered the answers himself.

Award-winning illustrator Jon J Muth's lovely watercolors are the most appealing aspect of this book about compassion and living in the moment. The simple Zen-based profundity of the boy's philosophical exploration may escape young readers, but they will enjoy the tale of a child who, in doing good deeds (for a panda and her baby, no less!), finds inner peace. Muth based his story on a short story of the same title by Leo Tolstoy. (Ages 5 to 9) --Emilie Coulter

Sometimes I feel scared, too. 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought this book for my 4 year old grandson who sometimes has 'scared' moments that upset him. He loves this book because it both acknowledges a fear and shows how it is conquered by caring friends.

Another classic "Bear" story 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

We received the first "Bear Snores On" book as a baby gift years ago. Our only child is now six years old and everyone in our family can recite the "Bear" books by heart (I've even broken out with the rhymes at work). As Alaska residents, where folks routinely get mauled by bears within city limits, it's nice to put a friendly face on a potentially scary animal.

This book is a great compliment to the series, we love it just as much as the other one. We anxiously await the next chapter in "Bear's" life.

"Bear Stays Up" is such a cute book. We first open with a bear who always misses Christmas while his woodland friends share their memories. Bear decides to stay up. We follow Bear while he struggles with sleep and then through to his excitement of his first real Christmas. The kids loved this book and we will definitely be reading this one over the holidays! It's cute, sweet and light hearted, a definite read and share with the kiddo's!

Editorial Review:

"The day before Christmas,

Bear sleeps soundly

with a great big snore...."

Bear's friends are determined to keep Bear awake for Christmas! So they wake Bear up and have him help them find a Christmas tree, bake cakes, hang up stockings, and sing Christmas songs. Bear stays up -- by discovering that giving is one of the best Christmas presents!

How a SURPRISE visit from someone very special gives Bear and his friends a Christmas to remember makes an enchanting holiday story for young readers. With Karma Wilson's memorable text and Jane Chapman's glowing illustrations, Bear Stays Up for Christmas is a book to cherish throughout the year.

Great self-esteem book for kids! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Another wonderful contribution from Curtis. We read this book to our daughter until she could read it to herself changing the age to fit her age, from three until five when she read it herself. This book "normalizes" the behavior of children. It helps them and parents to understand our children have difficulty controlling their impulses but are nonetheless wonderful and loveable. I read this book to my daughter's class in Kindergarten and it was a huge hit as well.

Big changes are here!
My body's my car,
and I'm licensed to steer.

Learning not to hit? Having to wait your turn? Sitting still? It's definitely hard to be five. But Jamie Lee Curtis's encouraging text and Laura Cornell's playful illustrations make the struggles of self-control a little bit easier and a lot more fun!

This is the sixth inspired book from the #1 New York Times best-selling team of Today I Feel Silly: & Other Moods That Make My Day and I'm Gonna Like Me: Letting Off a Little Self Esteem.
