I've always appreciated the way Dr. Suess can speak to adults. This is a classic graduation book, and that's where I got my copy.

But it's still very much kid-friendly and just as inspirational to them as to anyone.

This is a story about chane and going for it, with a healthy dose of realism that reminds us that the world is not a fairy tale and that bad things will happen but that they are still no reason to give up.

Classic Seuss 5 out of 5 stars.

We bought this book for our daughter graduating high school. We wanted her to know that the sky was the limit for her. This says it all.

Excellent, Motivational for all ages 5 out of 5 stars.

This makes a great book. I gave one to a friend who's daughter is going to Kindergarten, I bought one for my little one and sent one to my brother who needed a little pick me up to get back on the right track. Its very motivational and I recommend it to every one of all ages.

My son loves this book! 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I have a 2-year old son and he enjoys looking at the pictures in this book. Since it's small, he can take it anywhere. He hasn't ripped any pages yet! I would like to buy the full-size book later. I think the full-size one will be better for storytelling. Shipping was so fast we got this book in no time!

Great story - timeless message 5 out of 5 stars.

This was my favorite gift to give this year to everyone from our daughter to my coworker - an important lesson to learn told in a classic story.

Great Classic Tale 5 out of 5 stars.

Love it. My kids love it. We first saw this book in a larger version at our pediatrician's office and we read it while waiting to be seen. My daughter loved it so much that I looked it up as soon as we returned home. The story is so well known, I won't even bother to rehash it. Even though I think I can... (A little humor there)

As usual, the visual component is very important as far as I'm concerned and the vintage art is fabulous. It reminds me of things I saw while cleaning up my grandparents' house. Left behind story books and toys from my mother and her sister. Very nostalgic.

This particular version of the book is quite small which I like, but my daughter wants a larger version. I believe it is available in a lager size here at Amazon.

great for baby's bookshelf 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Ive received several baby shower invites over the last couple of years that ask for a "book for the bab's bookshelf". I love this book because it has great pictures and tells the child that on the night he/she was born the whole world celebrated. When the child is a little older and you read them the story, it even asks you to "wiggle your toes" and other small directions that are fun because the book becomes interactive. Fun book :)

Editorial Review:

On the night you were born,
the moon smiled with such wonder
that the stars peeked in to see you
and the night wind whispered.
“Life will never be the same.”

On the night you were born, the whole world came alive with thanksgiving. The moon stayed up till morning. The geese flew home to celebrate. Polar bears danced.

On the night you were born you brought wonder and magic to the world. Here is a book that celebrates you. It is meant to be carried wherever life takes you, over all the roads, through all the years.

This debut picture book by Nancy Tillman has touched the hearts of readers of all ages, from the youngest readers, to new mothers, to grandparents. A New York Times and Publishers Weekly bestselling book, On the Night You Were Born is sure to be a beloved addition to family libraries.

Wonderful! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Here is a picture book that speaks to "the courage to create." Beautifully illustrated, Ish tells of Ramon, the boy with the gift of art. Reading the story, we realize that we all have a little of Ramon with us: the creative soul that wishes to bring forth a vision. And this is why we feel for Ramon when his brother makes an insensitive comment about his art. For us, it may not be a brother: it may be a thoughtless teacher, a cranky adult, or even some part of us that doubts our creative side. Whatever the source, an insensitive remark can cause us to wish to shut down our own wonderful creativity. But fortunately, there is another force that encourages us to keep going, and in this wonderful story, this positive energy is embodied in Ramon's little sister Marisol. How can we fail to cheer for Ramon's courage to create, in spite of the difficulties and doubts? Ramon is a great hero, and this book is a true source of inspiration for children and adults.

Editorial Review:

A creative spirit learns that thinking "ish-ly" is far more wonderful than "getting it right" in this gentle new fable from the creator of the award-winning picture book THE DOT.

Ramon loved to draw. Anytime. Anything. Anywhere.

Drawing is what Ramon does. It¹s what makes him happy. But in one split second, all that changes. A single reckless remark by Ramon's older brother, Leon, turns Ramon's carefree sketches into joyless struggles. Luckily for Ramon, though, his little sister, Marisol, sees the world differently. She opens his eyes to something a lot more valuable than getting things just "right." Combining the spareness of fable with the potency of parable, Peter Reynolds shines a bright beam of light on the need to kindle and tend our creative flames with care.

The Value of a Signature 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

How do you teach a child confidence?
You could put their work on the refrigerator, frame it, or talk about it with others. In this story the teacher frames a small dot drawn by a child who claims she is unable to draw. The little girl is also asked to sign her work, which emphasizes value.

Society values signatures. We want the signed book, the signed football pendant, the autograph, etc. because we perceive it is more valuable. Children can relate to signatures. Children understand signatures mean something (whether it is a report card that needs signing, an illness note for school, or the need to sign a "take home" folder). Thus, immediately the little girl realizes when asked to sign her work that her dot, her creation, is also valuable.

This wonderful story teaches children about trying, about at least starting, at least making an effort, and then seeing where that start can take you... This lesson is taught through art in this storybook but reminded me of what we were always told in writing, "Write, just start.... "

Henry Ford said, "If you think you can... or if you think you can't... you're right." This simple story illustrates a message of positive "can do" type thinking.

I also especially like that the little girl passes on what she learns at the end of the story by asking a little boy to sign his work. Setting a good example and passing on your knowledge to help others is a lesson for all children!

Editorial Review:

A frustrated grade school artist, Vashti sits slumped over her blank piece of paper at the end of art class. "I just CAN'T draw!" she tells her teacher. Her teacher first uses wit, then subtle yet clever encouragement to inspire her student to go beyond her insecurities and become, in the words of a younger boy who "can't" draw either, "a really great artist."

Peter H. Reynolds crafts a quiet, pleasing story in The Dot--one that will strike a chord with children who have outgrown the self-assurance of kindergarten and begun to doubt their own greatness. His marvelous watercolor, ink, and, yes, tea illustrations are appealing in a Quentin Blakey way, especially as Vashti begins to go wild with her dots. The delightfully open-ended conclusion will have readers of all ages contemplating how they can make their own mark in the world. Highly recommended. (Ages 5 to 9) --Emilie Coulter

Miss Rumphius 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is beautifully illustrated and is an even more beautiful story of the passing on of values intergenerationally. We have read the soft-covered version to our daughter so often that it is in tatters and we needed to invest in the hard-covered version. Great Aunt Alice spends her life learning how she will choose to make the world a more beautiful place and passes the challenge to do the same to the next generation. If my daughter spends her life living the message of this book, I will have succeeded as a parent. Thank you Barbara Cooney for another great book!

Wonderful Book! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is a short biography of Barbara Conney's great Aunt Alice Rumphius, who grew up in New England, loved the sea, and wanted to visit faraway places. And also had an objective to do something to make the world more beautiful. I have always loved this book and have had that very same goal ever since the fifth grade when our homeroom teacher read it to us. The book concludes when Barbara Cooney the author says that her Aunt Alice (Miss Rumphius,) tells her that she too needs to do something to make the world more beautiful. But even SHE doesn't know yet what that could be. I personally think that she made the world more beautiful by writing and illustrated this masterpiece. Everybody young and old should have a copy.

Editorial Review:

Genre-jumping author Avi clocks in here with his 50th book, Crispin: The Cross of Lead, an action-packed historical narrative that follows the frantic flight of a 13-year-old peasant boy across 14th-century England.

After being declared a "wolf's head" by his manor's corrupt steward for a crime he didn't commit (meaning that anyone can kill him like a common animal--and collect a reward), this timid boy has to flee a tiny village that's the only world he's ever known. But before our protagonist escapes, Avi makes sure that we're thoroughly briefed on the injustices of feudalism--the countless taxes cottars must pay, the constant violence, the inability of a flawed church to protect its parishioners, etc. Avi then folds in the book's central mystery just as the boy is leaving: "Asta's son," as he's always been known, learns from the village priest that his Christian name is Crispin, and that his parents' origins--and fates--might be more perplexing than he ever imagined.

Providing plenty of period detail (appropriately gratuitous for the age group) and plenty of chase-scene suspense, Avi tells a good story, develops a couple of fairly compelling characters, and even manages to teach a little history lesson. (Fortunately, kids won't realize that they're learning about England's peasant revolt of 1381 until it's far too late.) (Ages 10 to 14) --Paul Hughes

This is an excellent tool for kids...also another must-read for parents isBully-Proofing Children: A Practical, Hands-On Guide to Stop Bullying Can't fall victim with these two.

A useful resource 3 out of 5 stars.

Suggestions and anecdotes in _Stick Up For Yourself_ are helpful for opening discussions with little ones, particularly those who may be socially sensitive or (too) highly adaptable. I don't agree with all its suggestions, but the basic premise is sound -- that to develop personal integrity and firmness of resolve requires thoughtful practice -- and overall, it's a nice resource.

Teach Your Children Early To Feel Good About Themselves 5 out of 5 stars.

Self-esteem is so important to promoting happy, balanced and empowered children. This is a great start for children since it does a great job explaining to them what their personal power is all about. A companion book for parents that I have found invaluable to parenting my children is:Bully-Proofing Children: A Practical, Hands-On Guide to Stop Bullying. It goes way beyond bullying as it gives you incredible strategies, stories to share with your kids and tips on buiding their self-esteem and communication skills so your child never becomes a bully or victim. Get them both to round out your bookshelf.
