Great Book! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Punchinello sees other wemmicks with green noses. First he finds it silly. Then he and his friends get laughed at for not having green noses. So they get their noses painted. Soon the next color in style is red and then eventually purple is the last. They go through many nose paintings in order to be "in".

There is humor in the book too. When the wemmicks get their noses painted, they stick their noses in the air and walk like they are all that.

Punchinello soon decides he wants to be himself again. He gets tired of trying to follow the crowd to fit in.

This book is good not only for children, but for teenagers, and even adults alike.

Our favorite book! 5 out of 5 stars.

My son and I have been reading this book together for years and love it. It is such a wonderful and true story. A must read for every child and parent.

Editorial Review:

Punchinello's hard-earned lesson shows us how important it is to be who we were created to be, and why that matters. So let this wonderful tale help you remember two things: that you were made unique for a reason, and that there is one who will always help you be you--wonderfully you.

Important information for all kids 5 out of 5 stars.
21 of 21 people found this review helpful.

I agree with Dr. Ross's editorial review that "everything about this book is perfect for children." Speak Up and Get Along is a great resource to help kids survive and succeed especially in their social worlds at school. It is clear and easy for them to read. The best thing about it is that there are a lot examples of how to actually deal with bullying and teasing, arguments, peer pressure and making and keeping friends. Each chapter has easy tools for kids to use and the illustrations help. The chapter on talking back to negative thoughts was really helpful. It gives very specific ways that kids can do this. I really recommend this as a gift for the children in your life.

Will it work? 4 out of 5 stars.

As we all know, dealing with peers is one of the most difficult - but essential - skills our children need to learn. In a search for material that could be used for teaching effective problem-solving, assertive communication and negotiation skills, I discovered this book and ordered a copy. I found some of the ideas a bit silly-sounding but figured it might work with young children, so I have developed small "plays" using the book's dialogues to set up the scenarios for my kids to enact. They love it! Now I am expanding this activity to include all students from 1st-6th grade with the hope that learning these skills will help reduce bullying and enhance their communication skills. My only criticism is that the material presented in the book is a bit disjointed and hard to read. I'm not sure what audience the author was writing to, but I felt it too childish to be taken seriously as an adult and too abstract to hold the attention of a child; however, the basic principles are sound and the imagery of the language does appeal to the child in all of us.

One of Paulsens best! 5 out of 5 stars.

Woodsong
By
Gary Paulsen

Woodsong is a story about the author's adventure in Alaska. He writes
about running dogs and racing in the Iditarod.
This story begins in Anchorage, Alaska in the 1980s. Paulsen runs the
dogs which means hitching a dog team to a sled and taking them for a
run.
One time while running the dogs, they saw a glowing light in the
woods. It seemed to be person walking in the dark with a lantern.
Paulsen also thought it was a ghost. It turned out to be a dead tree
with a glowing mushroom on it. He walked up to it and hit his head on
the dead tree. He felt the glowing light and realized it was a glowing
mushroom.
On another adventure, he was running his dogs in a snow storm. Paulsen
was headed for the edge of a cliff. He told the dog team to go straight
and straight would take them off the edge of the cliff. Paulsen did not
know because he was in a snow storm and he could not see. The dogs
knew they were about to go off the cliff. They tried to turn away but
Paulsen told them to go off the edge. They flew right off the edge of
the cliff. The sled and some of the dogs fell on him. He had a broken
rib. He got the dogs and the sled off of him and got the sled in to
shape. He got on the sled and the dogs knew the way and pulled him home.
The last part of the book is about the Iditarod race. The Iditarod
is an annual dog sled race in Alaska, where mushers and teams of dogs
cover about 1,150 miles in eight to fifteen days. Paulsen had a long
and hard race but he finished in about thirteen days.
I would recommend this book to someone who is a adventure seeker.
I liked it because it was a true story.

Editorial Review:

For a rugged outdoor man and his family, life in northern Minnesota is a wild experience involving wolves, deer, and the sled dogs that make their way of life possible. Includes an account of the author's first Iditarod, a dogsled race across Alaska.

The Trellis and the Seed 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Okay, so it's a story we've all heard before, but that does not change the pure loveliness of this story of a seed that does not quite understand its purpose. The prose is beautifully sing-song and the art is enchanting, both handy for drawing this to its sweet and touching conclusion.

Editorial Review:

In this gently told parable, Jan Karon tells a story of patience, of the special rewards that come from being a little bit different from everyone else, and of the courage to believe in oneself.

In a picturesque and secluded garden, a tiny seed sits in thrilled anticipation of its destiny as a powerful vine, twisting and flowering through the white latticework trellis. But how could such a small seed ever thrive and grow into a strong, healthy, grown-up plant? "Don't worry," Mother Earth says. "God has planned something beautiful for you." But time passes, and the little seed doesn't believe it.

Beautifully illustrated and filled with faith and love, The Trellis and the Seed is Jan Karon at her very best-an inspiration for all ages and an important lesson on God's love for all creatures great and small.

toddlers love this series 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

My daughter loves this book, and I like reading it too. It's about an elephant who is very eager to help her Mother by helping arond her bakery. Ella is such an earnest and sweet elephant. The plot is simple yet has enough twists and drama to make it memorable. The illustrations are captivating.

Wonderful, well-imagined picturebook series 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I really love the "Ella" series... The books are nice and sweet, and presents a marvelously imagined, self-contained world that will strongly appeal to little kids. It has a similar feel to the "Curious George" and "Babar" books, except without all the weird, disturbing undertones that make those classics a bit troublesome. A great choice for some fun books that you don't have to worry about. (ReadThatAgain)

Editorial Review:

Ella the elephant is too little to slice the cake in her mother's bakery, and the oven is absolutely off-limits. It feels like she can't do ANYTHING important - until Ella's mother needs help with an emergency cake delivery. Then Ella peddles off on her trusty cart to prove herself, but there's a bumpy road ahead! In her second magical adventure, Ella the elegant elephant shows that you're never too little to save the day - so long as you have a big heart.

Why? 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Before reading the fourth book in the Earthsea "cycle", I was aware of the opinions of many who had already read this book. Quite frankly, I was hoping that I would disagree with those who were disappointed in "Tehanu". But try as I might, I failed to see the beauty in this "continuation" of what HAD been one of the greatest trilogies written.

Quite simply, "Tehanu" lacks the conciseness and mystery of the previous books. While I could - perhaps - forgive Le Guin for her decision to tear apart the world she had so beautifully constructed with this rather mundane and heavy-handed tale, I cannot excuse the absence of poetry here; poetry which abounds in each page of the previous three books.

Shame on you, Ursula!

Editorial Review:

In the spellbinding finale to the Earthsea books, Goha is called from Oak Farm to the deathbed of the mage Ogion. She takes Therru with her, and the two are led back through the labyrinth of their former lives, ultimately to their true identities and worth.

Woolbur 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Woolbur is a wonderful children's book that shows it's not only ok to be different, but it sure is a lot of fun. Knitters and spinners alike will enjoy sharing this story with their children and grandchildren.

Editorial Review:

Woolbur's list of Do's and Don'ts:

DO express yourself creatively…
DON'T worry if you weave your forelock into a pot holder!

DO march to your own beat…
DON'T worry when Maa and Paa tell you to stay with the herd!

DO be bold and brave…
DON'T be afraid to BE YOURSELF!

Woolbur is not like other sheep. He hangs out with wild dogs, cards his own wool to avoid the shearing barn, and even dyes his wool blue. "Don't worry!" says Grandpaa when Maa and Paa fret that Woolbur is different. But when they tell their son to follow the flock, the opposite happens—the flock follows him! Soon everyone is copying his wild hairstyles and taking turns on the spinning wheel. Leave it to Woolbur to find a new way to step ahead of the herd.

Spunky, funky, and refreshingly distinct, Woolbur will strike a chord with anyone who's ever felt different. And that's all of us!

A little odd 2 out of 5 stars.
6 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I bought a collection of these older Golden Books stories thinking they would be sweet and "old-fashioned" but I have to admit they are all a little odd. Most were written in a time when things weren't totally geared towards kids as they are today. The book is very wordy and the pictures are fairly sparse. The story is a good one, but is buried in a lot of detail. Not great for a 2-year-old. Maybe older kids would like it better. This one ends oddly with Dumbo securing a good salary and a pension for his mother. Actually, maybe that is a good lesson for kids now that I think about it!

your kids will love it 4 out of 5 stars.

A Courageous Elephant 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

You know this book is going to be good because it's Disney! This book is a great tale of a baby elephant growing up. Dumbo was unliked from the minute he was born because he was born with very large ears. Dumbo's mother was owned by a circus, Dumbo was born to be a circus animal. The day that Dumbo was in his first parade he was made fun of by the audience as he closely followed his mother. When Jumbo, Dumbo's mother, heard this she became furious and rambled into an outrage. The circus workers had to lock Jumbo up by demand of the ringmaster. The story is about an elephant finding a friend, his courage, and working toward his goal. This story will touch your heart in the deepest way possible. I recommend this book to anyone with and open mind and an open soul!

"Hut, Hut, Hut:" 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I'm thinking of a five-letter word for a good, realistic book, and Crash is the word I'm looking for. It's by Jerry Spinelli, and if you like him, this is probably the best book he's written. Like most books by Spinelli, it's about someone different, but understands a precious lesson to be learned. In this case, the different person is Penn Webb. Penn is a vegetarian, a Quaker (doesn't like war), a cheerleader, believes he is rich (even though he lives in a small house with little furniture) and was named after the famous track meet that his great-grandfather ran in, the Penn Relays. These are some of the reasons he is considered different. He is slow to learn, maybe not in math or science, but in the way things work, like when he wondered why people kept pinching him, until he finally finds out that there was a "pinch me" sign on his back. The only close to normal thing that Penn does is run.
Crash and his friend Mike like bullying Penn. They never get caught and Penn never realizes who is doing it. But one day, when Crash gets a hold of Penn's writing assignment that talks about how he wants to run in the Penn Relays so his great- grandfather can watch, he realizes that Penn is rich. Penn has happiness despite all his differences. So when the seventh graders race for a spot to run in the Penn Relays, Crash lets Penn win.
I liked this book because it shows many important lessons to be learned. I believe that it demonstrates that most people have lost the ability to be themselves, and when someone has that ability, they are considered "different". The author made every page so descriptive that you couldn't stop turning the pages until you were done with it. And if you like a funny, great book, one with a strong meaning, this will be the best book you have ever read.

Editorial Review:

Now available in paperback, Newbery Medalist Jerry Spinelli's hilarious, poignant story of  cocky seventh-grade superjock Crash Coogan.
