Armadillo Befriends Boot 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

A slightly different tale from Jan Brett. Gone is the European feel of so many of her books. It is replaced by a healthy jargon-filled dose of American Western. Gone are the hedgehogs; welcome the armadillos.

Bo is one of four armadillo brothers. He tends to be curious and wander so his mother tries to keep a close watch on him. Like all armadillos, Bo's eyesight is not very good. So one day while he is following a lizard, he sees a red cowboy boot and thinks it is a red armadillo.

The boot in question is being worn by a young girl who is trying to scuff them up so she won't look like a tenderfoot at the rodeo. But Bo does not see the girl, or the other boot for that matter. Instead, he thinks he has found a playful new friend.

Chasing after the boot, Bo has many experiences while his mother and brothers search for him (as seen in the side panels). Bo's adventure takes him across the rodeo arena, to a bar-b-que, into an encounter with a jalapeno, to a barn dance, a hayloft, and ultimately to the truth about his new friend.

In the end we learn that while Bo has learned the truth of his day's adventures, he knows just what to do when he feels a little mischievous.

I usually give Jan Brett's books five stars but gave this one only four. I did that only because of the heavy use of Western jargon that needs to be explained to young ears in order for the story to make sense. But it is still a very fun book with beautiful illustrations.

Editorial Review:

When Bo spots what he thinks is a "rip-roarin', rootin'-tootin', shiny red armadillo," he knows what he has to do. Follow that armadillo! Bo leaves his mother and three brothers behind and takes off for a two-stepping, bronco-bucking adventure. Jan Brett turns her considerable talents toward the Texas countryside in this amusing story of an armadillo on his own.

cute book 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This is a cute book! My daughter is [...] and in the second grade though she reads on a 5th grade level. So, it was a little easy for her, but would be great for first time readers. As a mom, I really liked this book because of the main character, Keeker. She is a cute, silly little girl who loves spending time with her pony (just like my daughter!). Many kids books for this age group involve subborn little girls who challenge authority, whine, and say hateful things. So, it's nice for a change to have a cute fun book that my daughter and I can both agree on. I love the whole series and look forward to the release of the new one in Spring 07!

Editorial Review:

Meet Catherine Corey Keegan Dana (everyone calls her Keeker). What she wants most of all is a pony.

Meet Plum. Plum is a Shetland pony (who's known to be a teeny bit sneaky). She rarely, if ever, thinks about little girls. She certainly doesn't want one.

When Plum moves to Keeker's farm, Keeker faces the challenge of winning a pony's trust and friendship. And when Plum and Keeker find themselves lost in the woods, they learn that working together is the best way to get out of a fix. This fast-paced story of adventure and friendship will have new readers galloping back for more.

Traditional telling of a classic tale with a more positive ending 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Her ability to cook empowers this little red hen to motivate her housemates. Help me with some of the housework if you want cake. A final illustration shows all the animals working, sweeping and dusting!

After reading the story as it is written, follow along with Heather Forest's Little Red Hen from the album, Sing me a Story. End on that final illustration with her words, "Sharing the work makes working fun."

Different versions may use different characters. This one uses the traditional Dog, Cat, Mouse.

Timeless Classic 5 out of 5 stars.

I purchased this book for my children and did it bring back memories! I had it read to me when I was little. So the story line is cute and teaches a valuable lesson with the moral the lazy cat, dog, and mouse do not get the snack. All of my children from 2-6 love this story, it never grows old.

The Little Red Hen 5 out of 5 stars.

This version is a classic one. The story and illustrations are very inviting for any child. I love the classic moral of the story too.

Editorial Review:

Galdone's dynamic, amusing pictures add much humor to the familiar tale of the industrious hen and lazy cat, dog, and mouse.

Trixie Keeps Plenty Busy on this Vacation 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Christmas vacation is coming, but the Bob-Whites aren't dreaming of a white Christmas. Their hopes are set on Di's Uncle Monty who has promised all of them a vacation to his dude ranch in Arizona. But the trip almost doesn't come off. Trixie needs to study to bring her grades up. And when they arrive, Monty is having a crisis. Seems most of his staff has vanished with no warning and no explanation during the busiest time of the year. Where did they go? The Bob-Whites agree to take over the chores, but with Trixie's studies, will she ever get to have any fun? And that doesn't take into account the mysteries surrounding the other staff members and a few guests. Will these distract Trixie from her studies?

This was the last book series creator Julie Campbell wrote. It's not her best with lots of background on Arizona and Indian culture slowing the story down. The mystery, once it does get going, focuses on what is going on in people's lives. There are so many things happening I found it interesting even if it's not a traditional type mystery. Spending time with Trixie and her friends is always enjoyable, and the efforts they go through to make Christmas enjoyable for all is entertaining as well.

This was the second book I read many years ago when I was first getting into the series. While it's not up there with Julie Campbell's best, it's still and entertaining read that holds a special place in my heart.

Editorial Review:

Di Lynch’s Uncle Monty has invited Trixie, Honey, and the rest of the Bob-Whites to his Arizona dude ranch for winter vacation. There will be lots to do—horseback riding, swimming, festivals—but Trixie is hoping for an activity that isn’t on the usual list. She wants another mystery.

farmer boy 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

When I read this book, I got interest for pioneer life. I get suprised, because he, Almannzo, do all of his work and helps his family. And he went school that is far away from his house in snow days and in hot summer. I also impressed that his toy is the sled that made out from tree, and it is all hand maded. Today we usualy uses sled, but we don't use sled that are made out of trees. I thought he lead a full life solid. I don't want to live back that time, but I want to play with Almanzo and I want to ask more about his life in farm.

Editorial Review:

For the first time in the history of the Little House books, this new edition features Garth Williams' interior art in vibrant, full color, as well as beautifully redesigned covers.

While Laura Ingalls grows up in a little house on the western prairie, Almanzo Wilder is living on a big farm in New York State. Here Almanzo and his brother and sisters help with the summer planting and fall harvest. In winter there is wood to be chopped and great slabs of ice to be cut from the river and stored. Time for fun comes when the jolly tin peddler visits, or best of all, when the fair comes to town.

This is Laura Ingalls Wilder's beloved story of how her husband Almanzo grew up as a farmer boy far from the little house where Laura lived.

From one horse-lover to any others out there. 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I liked reading Sea Star by Marguerite Henry. It had wild horses with wild manes and flaring nostrils. Mares and foals of all types, pintos, bays, snow whites, and pitch black stallions galloped across the marshy plains. The book kept me on the edge of my seat and I was right there with Paul and Maureen, the two main characters when they found Sea Star. I was transported in my mind to the island of Chincoteague where I was flying across the sandy beach on my mounted steed next to them looking for the starving, tiny foal. Sea Star was my favorite book in the series of three books that I have read by this author.

A great book! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. I felt like i was right there with Paul and Maureen. They are the two main charecters that found Sea Star on the beach. This book explains the little ponys struggle for life and how Paul and Maureen helped save the ponys life. The author explains everything so well that you dont want to put the book down, ever. If you like animals then you should read this book. The author did a great job explaining and keeping you on the edge of your seat the whole time.

Jorge's Review on Hank 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I think that Faded Love is a good book. It is funny and also it has lots of adventures like the other books of Hank. I read this book with my classmates. Each of my classmates had a part in the book, like a kid was Drover and the other was Hank. Hank and Drover make this oath that they would never return to the ranch, and they would quit their jobs as cowdogs.

Drover told Hank that there was a snake on the ranch. It really wasn't a snake; it was just a cat's tale, which was Pete. Pete became mad at Hank because he thought he was a snake, so Hank left with Drover. On his way he met all kinds of old friends. He also meets new friends like Miss Scamper. She is this dog that Hank meets by a lake. Miss Scamper's owner stops by the lake and puts water in his radiator. Drover and Hank fall in love with Ms. Scamper. He also meets his old friends Rip and Snort; they are coyotes.

We found out that Drover is not that dumb. Hank sings this song to Beulah (she is hank's old girl friends, which was kind of funny. Hank and Drover decided to go back to the ranch. Drover reminds Hank about the oath, but he said that there are different kinds of oaths; one is forever and others are temporary. So they went back to the ranch and they saw the real snake. It was going toward little Alfred. Hank attacked the snake and the snake beat him. Everybody now thinks Hank is a hero.

Editorial Review:

Heading into the wild outback, Hank goes in search of his true love, the charming Miss Beulah. Hank is sure he can win Beulah's heart--but first he'll need the help of a powerful aphrodisiac.

The Case Of The Dead Chickens 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is about a brave cowdog named Hank. He tries to solve the case of the dead chickens. He has to find clues, like feathers, to catch who is eating the chickens. In the horse pasture he is chased and bitten by horses. Hanks owners wife throws rocks at him for looking at clues in her garden. Then, no thanks to a ranch mutt named Drover, Hank started finding clues and thought the suspect could be a skunk. So, on the other side of the ranch Hank waited in a corner by the chicken house. Suddenly, he sees the skunk go into the chicken house. When the skunk came out with the chicken, Hank went after him. Hank solves the case of the chickens and gets rid of the skunk.

Editorial Review:

Who--or what--has been killing Sally May's chickens? Everyone on the ranch is a suspect--even Hank! Can he solve the crime and prove his innocence before he's relieved of his command...and condemned?
