From Organizing from the Inside Out for Teens:

Jessi Says

What's My Payoff?
My bedroom is my home base and keeping it organized is a must. If my room isn't in solid condition, it's difficult to keep the rest of my life on track. Here are some other reasons that motivate me to keep my room organized:
- My room is the only space on the entire planet that is solely mine.
- My organized room allows me to maximize my space and time.
- My room boosts my confidence.
- My room gives others (especially my mom!) confidence in me.
- Organizing my room allows me to do what I want, when I want.

Informative and Stimulating! 5 out of 5 stars.
32 of 32 people found this review helpful.

Houses and Homes is a great book to stimulate conversation for young beginning readers! The photos alone are worth a thousand words. I used this book as a lead in for a discussion with first graders about different types of homes around the world. The text is simple enough that they'll read it unassisted over and over. The index in the back of the book, along with a world map, is very informative! It states the specific country where each photo was taken and gives detailed information on the uses of the types of homes shown. The descriptions also include information on the relationships between homes, cultures, and climates around the world. My 5 year old nephew, a beginning reader, would not put the book down. If he wasn't actually reading the book, he was spending time looking at the real-life photos!

Editorial Review:

The world is full of houses. Big houses and little houses. Houses that stay in one place and houses that move from place to place. Some houses are made of wood or stone; others are made from mud or straw. But all of them are made for families to live in.

Very Appealing to Children 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is very well written and will entice reluctant readers. Children will love the references to underwear and "sleeping bare".

Editorial Review:

  • You make your bed in the morning. At times in the past, people really made their beds -- and at night they stuffed straw into a sack, making a bed to lie on.
  • Nightclothes were first worn in the 1500s. Before that, people slept in their day clothes, their underwear, or nothing at all.
  • In Ancient Rome, bedrooms were small. A servant guarded the doorway by sleeping across it.

Learn these facts and more in this true but funny account as Newbery Honor Patricia Lauber and celebrated illustrator John Manders go under the covers to explore beds, bedrooms, and pajamas since the Stone Age. They'll show you how the world's been sleeping since the dawn of time.

I was impressed and delighted by this book! I bought it for our little boy, and he couldn't put it down ... The photographs are amazing, and the information provided in the book is priceless - for children and adults alike... This excellent book will be a wonderful addition to any library! Thank you!!!

Editorial Review:

Fascinating and unique, Wonderful Houses Around the World gives children a welcome entrée into other places and other lives throughout the world. Glorious two-page photographic spreads capture families outside their homes, be they simple or imposing. Detailed cutaway illustrations reveal the inside of each house, showing the various family members engaged in typical daily activities. Captions explain where each house is located, the environmental conditions that affect the house design, how the family lives in the home, and their possessions — all providing interesting glimpses of life in other cultures. The ten houses profiled include a red mud dwelling with thatched towers in Togo, a yurt in Mongolia, a steep-roofed, shake-covered house in Transylvania, and a large donut-shaped communal building for 300 in China. This book increases children's wonder about and cultural awareness of the many different people and ways of life around the world.

A good overview of basic hand tools and their use. 4 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

My 22 month old son loves this book. He brings it to me or my wife several times a day for reading. Not much text, good illustrations. Tools are grouped by function (tools that make holes, tools that measure etc.). A few of the tools are obsolete (like the bit & brace) but can be found in the workshops of grandparents.

Great for the little carpenter 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My 3-year-old loves this book. It covers in clear illustrations and simple words most of the tools that a carpenter or a do-it-yourselfer owns. There aren't any power tools, so it's a little dated, but it's the best book of this type that I've found for the little guys.

Editorial Review:

Depicts a number of different tools used in building and the kinds of work they are used for.

Good book but... 3 out of 5 stars.
10 of 13 people found this review helpful.

This book was a good book. The only problem was it didn't have a lot of craft ideas per section. Most of the crafts I couldn't do because of the certain required materials. Better off saving your money!

Dissapointing 2 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I'm always on the search for good room-decor books, and I like most of the ideas that American Girl features in their magazine. But as I was looking through this book, I saw that many of the projects were pretty difficult-looking, the materials were too expensive, the projects were messy, or all three. I liked some of American Girl's other room decorating books; they were simpler and better then this one.

American Girl Room Crafts 5 out of 5 stars.

Home Sweet Home 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

"There are many kinds of houses in the world, from little cottages to big mansions, from farmhouses to bungalows. But no matter the kind of house, it is the living inside that makes it wonderful, what happens in each room that makes it marvelous. It is what the house means to those who live there. Let's walk through. Let's see the wonderful things about a house." And with an invitation like that, who could resist. Join author, Cynthia Rylant, and illustrator, Wendy Anderson Halperin, as they take the reader on a room by room tour of their house. From the front porch to the attic, and all the rooms in between, this dynamic duo investigates each room, detailing all the special things that belong there, and all the wonderful things you might do. Ms Rylant's gentle, lyrical prose is rich in imagery and magic. But it's Ms Halperin's colorful, busy, and expressive artwork that really makes this picture book stand out and sparkle, and she spares no detail in each fun-filled, joyous, cluttered picture. Young and old, alike, will linger over each two page spread, always finding something new and clever every time they open the book and explore a room. Perfect for preschoolers, Let's Go Home is a cozy and engaging read-aloud that's sure to open interesting discussions about your own home and what makes it unique and special. "Happy living."
