perfect for little geographers 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

My 6 year old son got this for his birthday and he loves it. Every night he reads about different countries. And lets me know the capital, languages spoken and population of each country (among other things). I am learning a lot from this too! There is a lot of information packed into this book. I highly recommend this book to anyone that is a lover of the fascinating world of geography.

My daughter loved this book. It is suitable for anyone of reading age, we enjoy it as much as she does. Also, the same book was over double the price at the book store.

Editorial Review:

high-quality puzzles based on geography 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

The title of this book is misleading-it's not actually an atlas-but it is a great puzzle book! Each page has a state (similar in concept to an atlas) and a puzzle related to the state. There are a variety of puzzles, and kids use the simple maps to help figure out some of the answers. My 6-year-old and 8-year-old have really enjoyed the book. On a long airplane trip, my son worked the puzzles for each state as we flew over it. It's a great and fun way to begin reading maps, too! This book is a superb deal for the price. Actually, all the books in this series are!

Very British! 4 out of 5 stars.
28 of 32 people found this review helpful.

I'm generally impressed by this book as a resource for teaching young children about the world, but even the US edition I have strikes me as very much oriented toward the British world view. The main thing that bothers me is that the main thing they consider interesting about Ireland is... Guinness beer! Also, the "Southern Ocean" is included, which I didn't think was recognized by US schools. Unless something changed recently, I always thought there were four oceans: Atlantic, Pacific, Indian and Arctic.

The quality of the photographs is nice but not their content 2 out of 5 stars.

This DK book has beautiful pictures and colors. The pages layout is nice too. But many images are not suitable for little eyes. That's strange since this a book intended for children. This book is full of pictures of half naked people, various pagan idols, people wearing frightening masks, Lenin's dead body, Michellango's painting of a fully naked man, etc. I'm very disappointed and a bit angry.

Editorial Review:

The DK First Atlas brings each continent and country to life, making geographic concepts easy to understand. Packed with detailed pictorial maps specially designed for young readers, this First Reference title is an invaluable learning tool for home and elementary school.

Editorial Review:

One day, Kansas wakes up grumpy. The other 49 states are stretching, yawning, and pouring maple syrup onto each other's pancakes, but irritable Kansas announces to his kindly neighbor Nebraska that life is dull and changes must be made: "All day long we just sit here in the middle of the country. We never GO anywhere. We never DO anything, and we NEVER meet any NEW states!" Nebraska, sick of hearing North Dakota and South Dakota bicker all the time, agrees to help organize a party for all the states. It's a hit! Late into the evening, Idaho and Virginia get up onto the stage and suggest that all the states change places. What a state of affairs. Minnesota, who switches places with Florida, gets a sunburn. Kansas, having traded places with Hawaii, gets lonely and sings some soggy blues so sad that a shark sheds a mournful tear offshore. Nevada and Mississippi fall in love. Despite the initial excitement, the new arrangement just doesn't feel right. The states manage to swim, fly, bike, and hitchhike their way home, and everyone goes to bed in the right place--even Kansas is happy to be home after such an adventure. This wacky, thoroughly engaging tale of mixed-up geography is a good bet for some awards. Perhaps best of all, the large format and riot of detail allow for plenty of amusing asides. Books that claim to "make geography fun" usually have to be taken with a dose of skepticism: so often, the teaching is there and the entertainment isn't. This delightfully quirky and original book shows how it should be done. (Ages 4 and older) --Richard Farr

10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This is a fantastic book for young ones with amazing illustrations. Our 4 year old daughter loves all the little details and pictures about each place in the world. Beautiful, bold colors with a lot of info on animals and people from all around the globe. We highly recommend this as an introduction to geography and culture of the world.

cute and educational 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Really cute book. And boy, do American kids ever need to boost their geography skills! This book goes into the concepts of cultures and other world concepts, not just maps...a great start. My 3-year-old nephew learned to point out "Africa" as easily as he could find his favorite television characters!

Editorial Review:

This picture atlas takes young readers on a visual journey around the world, from the hot plains of Africa, to the frozen tundra of the Artic. Detailed pictorial maps reveal the richness and diversity of human and animal life around the world. Each map shows the countries, their capital cities, most famous landmarks, longest rivers and highest mountains, while picture stories supplement the maps. It provides a simple introduction to maps, world culture and geographical concepts for pre-school children.

amazing gift for the curious child 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My son loves geography. He has a globe and map of the world with each nation's flag and a lot of books. I thought I had this subject covered until I ran across this the 3D Atlas. This book is amazing and your child doesn't have to be into geography to love it.

There are 50 photos for the 3D glasses. They make the mountains pop off the pages. He still oohs and aahs when he looks at it and not to worry, when the glasses are eventually lost (you know this will happen), the book still manages to keep their interest. It is written for a child and the facts from around the world will capture their imagination and expand their view. My son was particularly fascinated to learn that chewing gum was against the law in Singapore and there were severe punishments for littering! It comes filled with all kinds of fun facts that appeal to kids.

This book is perfect for a gift - I just ordered one and discovered it was much cheaper here at Amazon. There is a whole series of books in the 3D line (I can recommend the Extreme 3-D Scary Bugs! (Extreme 3-D) one as well) by different authors.

Editorial Review:

Much more than an atlas, this book is also a virtual travel experience! It includes more than 40 maps, 30 feature articles on famous places, and 46 eye-popping 3-D photos of the world's most interesting sights. Readers visit the Grand Canyon, look down from the top of the Eiffel Tower, 'snorkel' in the Great Barrier Reef, peek inside a blue ice cave in Antarctica, and more! Physical maps are also rendered in 3-D, so mountains bulge out from the page.

The Heavens for Children 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

As a very mature adult I can say I thoroughly enjoyed my peak into this book. As an adult I can gladly say I was thrilled by the excitement it generated in a six year old child for whom I bought it. If you want to know how a child will react to this, I can tell you that research with a sampling of one shows great excitement for this volume. It is well contructed and beautifully laid out.

For a beginners, even for advanced, this book is so good because is like a brief reference to remember or to take fuel to swim deep in astronomy. I'm so pleased to bought it.

The book, which I will give as a gift for a wedding, is great in terms of it's content and I'm almost sorry to give it away. Even more, as the book reached me in a bad shape: there were dirty marks on several pages and it looked scratched!!! Booo for amazoon, but compliments for the book.

Revised with a new CD-ROM, this entry in DK's successful series of informative and visually compelling atlases explains how to see and read the night sky at all latitudes for a worldwide audience.
