That's Nasty! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I bought this for your typical 11 year old boy. He loved it, I'm not sure how much mom did. That is one very clever way to get boys that age to read a book on their own. And they learn a thing or two along the way. Heck I would have like this when I was a kid. Remember boys are going to be gross either way, might as well make it educational too!

Great gift for a boy 4 out of 5 stars.

Buying gifts for boys ages 8 to 12 is difficult. This book is a great gift for a boy in that age group. I read it, too, and was interested in the information it contained - although it is kinda gross.

Editorial Review:

My seven year old doesn't like this book 1 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

My son likes bathroom talk as much as the next kid, but he didn't like this book. He zeroed in on the basic disrespect for everything in the past and he just didn't like it. After hearing him explain that he didn't think that George Washington's wooden teeth were what he wanted to care about, I had to agree with him that the book doesn't make history appealing. People in history end up sounding stupid for not knowing things we know now. I don't want my kids to read history with that kind of arrogance.

Not just for kids! 5 out of 5 stars.

My eleven year old read this book out loud to me on several occasions-his favorite being what he learned about the number thirteen. Since he was born on a Friday 13th he's always been curious why it has been associated with bad luck. To his delight, thanks to this book, he learned the number 13 is actually quite lucky! But Friday, not so much. Oh well, at least he gained some great knowledge and it wasn't always so gross, just rather unusual.

I found myself glancing through this book and finding many interesting facts about things I've always wondered about. Such as diapers in the middle ages, hair styles throughout history, fashion and the lives of many queens, in particular Elizabeth I. She used a lead based face paint to achieve her 'whitish' complexion and it created such large craters on her face, by the end of her life she had to coat her face with 1/2 inch of the stuff to cover it all up. Who would of known that it would kill her.

Great book! Highly recommended not just for the kids, but for the adults as well.

Editorial Review:

All the vile stuff kids live for! What Oh, Yuck! did for science, Oh, Yikes! does for history, from Atilla the Hun to Vomitoriums. Solid research, plus projects. Illustrated throughout with cartoons and photographs. Ages 8-12. 224 pages. 8 1/2 x 10 7/8 inches.

Good Reference 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Our 5 year old son likes Bionicle and has built a few of them (with a little help) but doesn't know a lot about the history or characters. The Bionicle world seems so complex. However, this Bionicle Encyclopedia is very informative and helps the reader understand the Bionicle world a lot better. Whenever our son is interested about a particular Bionicle character, place, thing or term we just look it up in the encyclopedia. The fact that it's alphabetized makes it very easy to look things up. We also like the fact that it shows correct pronunciations (especially since we're not sure how to pronounce some of the names). We like the pictures but we wish they had a picture of every character in the Bionicle world...other than that we think it's a great Bionicle encyclopedia!
.

Editorial Review:

An encyclopedic look at the entire Bionicle story line, featuring new and updated entries. Want to know more about the Piraka? They're all here. And what about Nidhiki or Makuta? The Toa? The Toa Inika? The city of Metru Nui? And the watery world of Mahri Nui? It's all here: everything you ever wanted to know - and some things you may never have asked. The answers to your questions are inside this book.

A must-have for fans of all ages whether they are new to the property or think they know it all.

Fabulous book! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I got this book for my 6 year old son. I have a few books about the body and I have found that most are not descriptive enough when going through the body systems. They were fine when my son was younger, but now he asks many more questions and I find myself having a harder time explaining how the body works. So, I got this book along with a real working stethascope for children. Every night he loves reading through a few pages at time of this book. He really enjoys telling others what he has learned the night before... Sometimes the infomation is a little too descript, and other times not enough. But, overall, it is an excellent book to help your child understand the wonders of the human body. I would highly recommend this for children 5 years old and up.

Editorial Review:

Showing what's inside the human body and how things fit and work together, the Human Body Encyclopedia is packed with fascinating facts and spectacular close-up photographs that make the subject accessible and fun. Covering every part of the body‹from major body systems to individual cells‹in language accessible to young children, this book is an inspiring new edition to the First Reference series and a valuable teaching aid for parents and teachers.

I bought this for my oldest a year or two ago for Christmas and it was and still is a huge hit.
In fact this is one of those books he insists on taking with him on longer drives or trips.
He loves animals, dinos, etc. So this book was perfect for him, gave him pictures, basic information and other little bits and pieces about each animal. He loves to look up animals he sees and finds outside and learn more about them.
If your child loves to learn more than just a name and recognize a picture I think this will be a great first start.

Keeps my 3 year old at the potty! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I got this book to keep by the toilet (we are potty training). It was a smart move because this book keeps him totally mesmerized and makes him relax. It never gets old because there is so much information in this book for a young mind. It is not cluttered, but seems to be laid out with a child in mind. He particularity likes the castle and knight page. I'm considering getting the other books in this series too.

5 yr old loves it 5 out of 5 stars.

My eight-year-old does not enjoy reading, but she can sit with this book for an hour, looking at the pictures and learning about many different topics. She has the Scholastic Illustrated Dictionary as well, which is also a favorite.

Interesting Encylclopedia 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I got this for my twin girls who are in third grade. They think it is a very interesting book and enjoy reading the entries and learning about various things. For that, Scholastic hit a home run. The one big downside is that the number of entries is limited, and some things I would expect to be in a child's encyclopedia are missing. Also, it has a decidedly liberal slant, which is great if you are a liberal and not so great if you are conservative and, either way, wish to share that view of the world with your children.

Editorial Review:

The Scholastic Children's Encyclopedia is the ultimate research tool for kids 8-12. With more than 600 entries ranging from Aircraft to the Korean War, the Respiratory System to Walt Whitman, this book will serve as an indispensible reference for students. The comprehensive, but completely child friendly structure allows young researchers to find the information they are seeking quickly and easily, and leads them to even more through "See Also" boxes and cross references. The extensive backmatter includes maps of the world, the United States, and time zones, as well as charts citing the

Good Encyclopedia 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

My 5 year old son enjoys this book, but I wish it had a better resource for learning about individual dinosaurs. Great pictures and information on the time periods, but he's too young to learn (or not interested) in the time periods, we want more information on each individual dinosaur. Bits of information on each dinosaur is scattered throughout the book, so it's hard to find all the facts of the T-Rex for example.

Awesome Book for the $$$$! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is well-written and very informative. It is going to be a Christmas gift for my granddaughter who is extremely interested in dinosaurs and their existance in our prehistoric world. The book gives facts and photos to explain each page at great length. I think my granddaughter will be pleased with the book and I look forward to seeing the excitement as she opens it for the first time.
