Great Book! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The poor reviews rate this book low for two main reasons:

1. It is in black and white, like a coloring book.
2. It is in Russian with no English and no guide.

Pros:
- If you learn better by associating words with pictures, this is great.
- If you want to make personal copies (like if you have more than one kid?) then the coloring book style makes this easy.
- If you like coloring, you can color it.
- You learn a foreign language better by completely being submersed in it. Having the Russian word printed on a picture of it without pronunciation or translation makes your brain work less and learn Russian better through instant recognition, instead of it cycling -> English meaning, Russian pronunciation, funny "letters." Forcing the alphabet on yourself is actually easier.
- This book is a whopping $3.95.

Cons:
- If you can't read Russian yet, buy this book but get a pronunciation guide. If you can buy this book on Amazon.com, you can Google a guide.

Also, don't think it's just for kids. Remember learning your native language? Did you have pictures? Did you have to sound out the words thousands of times before you instantly read it? Yeah, you did and there is a reason for that--learn Russian the same way.

Editorial Review:

Delightful learning aid contains 15 scenes of home, school, farm, beach, park, classroom, and other common environments--with more than 500 objects labeled in Russian. Complete list of Russian words and English translations included at back of book. Fun-filled, effective way for students of Russian to build and strengthen their vocabulary skills.

HM Practice Book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a great book that goes along with the reading series that my school uses in our 4th grade reading classes. Even though my book was considered used/in good condition, I saw nothing wrong with it. It looked brand new! This is not the first student reading practice book that I have purchased "used" from Amazon.com and every one has been in excellent condition.

A Practical and Useful Book 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I have just begun to use this book with my middle school classes. So far, so good. Unlike many workbooks I have bought sight unseen, this one has many pages which can be reproduced as is. I made a packet for my writers using the first five pages of the book which named and gave examples (mostly understood and enjoyed) of techniques such as the "Magic 3," and "Full-Circle Ending" as well as imagery, humor, etc. The book is well-aligned with the 6-Traits method.
The type of printing used on the examples is a little hard to see, but it did not pose a major problem. I also got her "Portfolio" book, as I was that impressed.

Editorial Review:

This unique resource gives middle and secondary school English teachers 180 high-interest activities that build students proficiency in the three major areas of the English curriculum—reading/literature, writing, and grammar. All the activities have been classroom tested, can be used with students of varying ability, and are effective as individual, group, or whole-class activities.

My kids Loved it! 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 14 people found this review helpful.

My kids laughed all the way through it. They were given a chance to count and talk through the fishermen and their mistakes. My oldest read it and laughingly told me I had to read it to my 2 1/2 year old. Fishing is very big in our house and the book was picked for that connection but is well worth reading.

Funny and a great read for kids! 5 out of 5 stars.

What a comical book! My son loves it and it was easy for him to read and understand.

math/literature combo 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a wonderful addition to a home or K/1st library collection. The story and illustrations are whimsical. The math "mistake" is great practice for youngsters with problem solving. This is an entertaining book for emergent readers to read on their own or to be used as a read aloud.

Editorial Review:

Illus. in full color. Five fishermen go out in a boat and think that only

four come back, until they realize the silly counting mistake they have made.

"The simple text works well with the neatly executed drawings. This traditional

tale is sure to amuse beginning readers, who will get a lesson in logic as

well."--Booklist.

Heads up for Home Schoolers 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 11 people found this review helpful.

This book provides a great selection of American literature, beginning with Native American and moving on to the twentieth century. The overviews and author bios are excellent! However, if you are teaching in a Christian home school, you will find some of the selections to have been "edited" to exclude some important aspects of American literature. For example, Phyllis Wheatley, a slave who accepted Christianity, is presented as a feminist and political activist; the poems she wrote about her faith are omitted, despite Wheatley's statements about the primary importance of her faith. Of the thousand excerpts the editors could have chosen from *On Plymouth Plantation*, they focus on the death of Bradford's wife (coming down on the side of suicide rather than an accident)and put the relationship with the Native Americans in a somewhat negative light while the full text of that work shows a more balanced account. Jonathan Edwards' famous sermon, "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God," stops just before Edwards passes from "what sinful humans deserve" to "what God has actually done to save sinful humans from what they deserve." At least an ellipsis is provided to show what has been done. I find this book to be a great source for information about the various periods of American literature, but I would look to supplements from the library or the Internet for full texts of excerpted readings.

Great science 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Here's a great science book for 4th graders. My daughter loved this book and can't wait to do science. The pictures are fantastic and are so interesting. Everytime we open the book up for another unit, she loves it. I know, with how well everything is explained that she retains this information for a long time. I would highly recommend this book and all the harcourt science books.

Harcourt Science Grade 2 is a WORKBOOK not a TEXT BOOK 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The title is misinforming. Be aware that this book it is a WORKBOOK not a text book.
Under their description it states the subjects included, like 'Process Skills Parctice", "Lesson Concept Review/Assestmet" Etc, but even though on the hardcopy I got, on its covers it's written in big bold letters WORKBOOK!nowhere in it's Amazon description or title is stated that this is a workbook...
As a workbook it looks good but you DO need the text book too in order to answer the questions etc.

Homonym Helper 4 out of 5 stars.
38 of 38 people found this review helpful.

Eight Ate, created by Marvin Terban, was created as a teaching game, in one of his English classes. This book is useful for learning the difference between words that sound the same, but are spelled differently. The jokes and riddles are described by pictures to give clues to the answers. This book is a great way for kids to understand the different meanings behind words that sound the same. As someone who confuses they're and there, I found this book fun and helpful, and I'm in college! This would also help teachers in the Language Arts field. By creating fun use for words, Terban brings forth knowledge needed to understand the English Language.

Editorial Review:

This collection of original riddles is unlike any other because the main words in each answer sound exactly alike, but have different meanings. Zany illustrations add to the fun and provide clues to the solutions. And the newly designed full-color cover makes the package even more appealing. So dig in--and see why you should play with your words (not with your food)!

Understanding and Using English Grammar Third Edition 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is quite helpful if you need to know about grammar rules for the English language. Betty Azar has so much experience as a teacher of ELLs that she is able to organize the information in a way that is easily accessible to grammar teachers and English Language Learners as well. Great reference material for all classroom teachers!

Editorial Review:

A classic developmental skills text for intermediate to advanced students of English, Understanding and Using English Grammar is a comprehensive reference grammar as well as a stimulating and teachable classroom text. While keeping the same basic approach and material as in earlier editions, the Third Edition more fully develops communicative and interactive language-learning activities. Some of the new features are: *Numerous "real communication" opportunities *More options for interactive work in pairs and groups *Additional open-ended communicative tasks for both speaking and writing *Expanded error analysis exercises *Interesting and lively new exercise material *Shorter units for easy class use The program components include the Student Book, Workbook, Chartbook, Teacher's Guide, and Companion Website. Also available: Understanding and Using English Grammar Interactive (a multimedia CD-ROM).
