Editorial Review:

Sooner or later, just about every American kid is required to memorize the Preamble to the Constitution of the United States. And until now, it was one of the more boring, meaningless assignments. But artist and political cartoonist David Catrow (Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon) has changed all that with his witty, clear-as-a-Liberty-Bell picture book. For him, the Constitution is "a kind of how-to book, showing us ways to have happiness, safety, and comfort." With laugh-out-loud cartoony illustrations, and the actual words of the Preamble as the only text, Catrow depicts a camping trip taken by a diverse, bumbling group of friends, demonstrating the rights and responsibilities the Constitution places on all Americans, young and old. In one especially winning picture, the kids' long-nosed, long-eared pooch provides "for the common defense," keeping lackadaisical guard over the camp as the three human friends yuk it up in silhouette inside the tent. Readers will never yawn at mention of the Constitution again! (Ages 8 to 12) --Emilie Coulter

Great search book 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

I disagree with the "baby-preschool" description of this book. I think it's a little too busy for babies, and I also think children in the early grades would really enjoy finding the animals on each page. (I used to teach fourth grade, and I think this would even enthrall a lot of early-mid elementary aged kids as well.) Every page shows a different setting, and it gives a number of how many animals of each kind that you are supposed to spot. Kids spend time finding all of the animals on each page, and they are also counting and learning about habitats as well. My four-year-old son spent HOURS looking at this book by himself, even though he couldn't yet read the animals' names and needed me to help him with that part. (That's part of why I think the baby-preschool label is way too limiting; older kids who can actually read the animal names might enjoy it even more for quiet examination.) The drawings are very kid-friendly -- they are realistic even though they have a picture book vibe to them. We really loved this book.

Editorial Review:

Teeming with animals to find, count and talk about, this bright picture book provides hours of puzzle-solving fun. It also helps develop basic word and number skills. The busy scenes bring to life different habitats from around the world. Chilren will delight in finding all kinds of familiar and exotic animals -- from lambs on the farm to armadillos in the rainforest. Ages: 3 years and up. Size of book: 9 1/8 x 10 5/8 inches. Pages: 32.

This book is great for Middle School Students or even High School Students who want to review the events leading to the Constitution. I am a Middle School Teacher and plan on using the book to review my lessons with my students. Next year I plan on using it to introduce the topic!

Excellent! 5 out of 5 stars.

I came across one book by Betsy Maestro "The Discovery of the Americas" and I loved it. The text is simple and the illustrations are great. It is historically accurate as well, a must in my checklist. I didn't realize she also wrote the historical series "You Wouldn't Want to..." They are my favorite!! I recommend all of her books, especially for teachers.

Can't teach the Constitution without it! 5 out of 5 stars.

Maestro reviews the reasons for the Constitution, but fails to mention the Articles of Confederation. The text includes the Virginia, New Jersey, and Connecticut Plans. The book can easily be read as an introduction to the Constitution in one class period. Students could complete a drawing or group of drawings on a picture web to narrate the important details from the story.

Editorial Review:

This easy-to-understand book tells why and how the Constitution of the United States was created. "Simple, attractive, informative....The most accessible history of the Constitution to date."--School Library Journal.

I bought this book for my 14 yr old son and when he saw it, he kept saying that's AWESOME, that's AWESOME! He especially liked the "Awesome" poster and he put on the back of his bedroom door. I think these books are totally awesome and well detailed.

So Great it Lasts a Decade 5 out of 5 stars.

Right, so I've had this book for 10 years, and yeah, it's probably a slightly different version, but regardless, I've had it for ten years and it's downright useful. I'm an artist and writer, and it's a great thing to have. The pictures are very, very vivid, and the short tidbits on piraticalness are excellent accompanionments. In fact, this book started my interest in piracy. And though it is definitely not the only book in my pirate collection nowadays, it's just as loved and useful as when it was.

Book Purchase 5 out of 5 stars.

It Could Save Your Life 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

By Brandon Council

Life in Prison was an excellent book because Stanley lets you know how it is in prison. I recommend students and juveniles all over the world to read it. It lets you know what you have to go through in prison if you get beat up or sick. I think if people read this book and go by what it says, it might stop people that are in gangs and are on the street selling drugs or doing wrong. I also think that if people read it they won't commit crimes that lead to life in prison. So if you read this book it might just save your life.

Editorial Review:

"The true stories I've written in this book are my living nightmares. My greatest hope is that the lessons the stories offer will help you make better choices than I did." Stanley "Tookie" Williams, cofounder of the notorious Crips gang, is a death-row inmate. But in his two decades of incarceration, Williams has also become a respected author and activist whose dedication to ending gang warfare in the lives of inner-city children has earned him a 2001 Nobel Peace Prize nomination. In this award-winning book which has drawn praise from educators, government leaders, and families alike Williams describes the brutal reality of being an inmate. He debunks myths of prisons as "gladiator schools" with blunt, riveting stories of overwhelming homesickness, the terror of solitary confinement, and the humiliation of strip-searches. Williams' words are a frank challenge to adolescent readers to educate themselves, make intelligent decisions, and above all, not to follow in his footsteps.

Editorial Review:

Discover the world of espionage -- from the early spymasters to the electronic surveillance of today.

Everybody knows that spies wear white dinner jackets, drive sports cars, like their drinks shaken not stirred, and carry electric saws disguised as watches. Or do they? Certainly, some real spies are sophisticated members of the diplomatic service, but most are ordinary people from all walks of life. Spy is a journey through the history of espionage, from biblical spies who helped bring down the walls of Jericho to today's technological intrusions on the internet. Real-life spying equipment and gadgets are as amazing as those designed by Q for James Bond. Eyewitness Spy shows how, after the Cold War, and despite the new spirit of international cooperation, there is still a place for the spy in the modern world. Written by Richard Platt, author of the best-selling Cross-sections! Man-of-War and Eyewitness Pirate, Spy is a unique introduction to the dangerous lives of those who exist in the shadowy world of espionage.

Editorial Review:

The extraordinary true story of a family, a brutal shooting, and the year that would change their lives forever.

When Cylin Busby was nine years old, she was obsessed with Izod clothing, the Muppets, and her pet box turtle. Then, in the space of a night, everything changed. Her police officer father, John, was driving to work when someone leveled a shotgun at his window. The blasts that followed left John’s jaw on the passenger seat of his car—literally. Overnight, the Busbys went from being the "family next door" to one under 24-hour armed guard, with police escorts to school, and no contact with friends. Worse, the shooter was still on the loose, and it seemed only a matter of time before he’d come after John—or someone else in the family—again. With their lives unraveling around them, and few choices remaining for a future that could ever be secure, the Busby family left everything and everyone they had ever known…and simply disappeared.

As told by both father and daughter, this is a harrowing, and at times heartbreaking account of a shooting and its aftermath, even as it shows a young girl trying to make sense of the unthinkable, and the triumph of a family’s bravery in the face of crisis.

Judges in the making 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I have used this book with juveniles I work with on probation. It is neat to see them problem solve the cases and how many times they would actually punish the crime much harder than what the judge actually decided. This book creates great discussions and has a lot of value in the therapeutic groups for problem solving. I highly recommend this book to use with teens in all different ways.

BEST book for boys who want to be SUPER HEROES! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

We checked this book out from our library for my youngest son, who is nearly 5, because he LOVES superheroes.

Now, I am EXTREMELY scrutinous over which literature and shows pertaining to superheroes my children are allowed to watch as I believe most of this type of media is overly mature and the graphics are definitely adult oriented.

Although this does feature some sophisticated sketches of Batman and some of his arch enemies, it all serves a very REAL purpose! This book features a brief (1-2 pages) historical overview of who Batman is, then the rest of the book describes the tools that Batman uses and how they translate to real life heroes - crime detectives and their labs!!!

How great is that???? My oldest son (7), who is obsessed with learning about community heroes: Police, Firefighters, Military Heroes, etc. has consumed this book and is now keeping a "journal" of questions and sketches inspired from this book.

This is a must for little boys of all ages, as it really helps them formulate a translation for all that imagination and excitement that superheroes generate.
