For students who want better grades, a good book 5 out of 5 stars.
104 of 105 people found this review helpful.

I have now reviewed 10 study skills books for middle and upper school students. This is one of the best.

Rozakis writes for the young student, middle or upper school, and gives immediate and practical suggestions about how to study "smart," (e.g., set goals, get organized, set up a study center, improving one's memory); reading for success; preparing for a test; test-taking skills; and mastering specific kinds of tests (T/F, multiple-choice, etc.). Rozakis has no specific section for studying math, but her emphasis on organization, preparing, rehearsing, and so forth, can be transferred easily.

Teachers can use this for a class-wide book in study skills.

For older students (late high school and college), you may want to see Study power: Study skills to improve your learning and your grades, by William R. Luckie and Wood Smethurst, which I found to be geared quite well for that age group.

Rozakis' book is far better than the one offered by Teacher Created Materials (Middle School Study Skills). It also is better than Judith Dodge's The Study Skills Handbook (Grades 4-8), and Margaret Nuzum's Study Skills that Stick (with the exception that Nuzum specifically mentions math study skills).

I hope this helps.

Clubpeck 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

We have been using Brain Quest cards since the 2 to 3 year old pack. They provide a great way to introduce information to your child such as the difference between urban and suburban. They are portable so you can bring them along with you and use them to pass the time. I find that they give us a chance for one on one that is education and at times very funny.

Editorial Review:

First launched in 1992, Brain Quest is the curriculum-based learning tool that's helped over 14 million kids get ahead in the classroom. Now, with 50 percent new material keyed to what students in grades 1-7 need to know today, Brain Quest is ready to help a new generation review their current grades and preview the next in a colorful, challenging format that makes learning fun.

With bolder colors, new illustrations, full-color icons, and a more energetic design, Brain Quest looks as smart as it is. And of course each Brain Quest deck is still as portable as ever. In the car, at the beach, on the couch-kids can turn to Brain Quest anywhere, anytime.

Each title includes:

- The most current information across a range of disciplines

- Broader and more intellectually challenging questions in all subjects

- A better balance between questions kids should be able to answer and those that will expand what they know.

A spoonful of laughter 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

You know the phrase, "A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down." Well, this book gives a spoonful of laughter to help the homework "go down" without "throwing up." The clever use of artwork and text really gets kids involved in getting the job done instead of spending so much time complaining. There are many practical ideas and they are presented in a highly motivational way. I suggest reading it with children and discussing it rather than just handing them the book.

GREAT book! 5 out of 5 stars.

My 11 year old son rolled his eyes when I handed him this book. I came back a half an hour later and he had finished it! He was so excited and told me so many things on how he can do his homework better. He said it was very funny also. He learned a lot and really enjoyed the book!

Homework 5 out of 5 stars.

Very good book. Helps with getting kids to do their homework. It is a very good reference book. We have used it alot.

Editorial Review:

Hilarious cartoons and witty insights teach important truths about homework and strategies for getting it done. A tongue-in-cheek approach to a serious subject, this book makes homework more palatable--and kids less resistant.

Caveat Emptor 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 7 people found this review helpful.

The concept of adapting a Shakespeare play into the graphic novel format is at the very least a worthwhile endeavor. A successful attempt could bridge the widening gap between the generation that read the works of the Bard in the classroom without any significant visual aid and those who are more attuned to visual accompaniment to their stories. Shakespeare never wrote his plays to be read as words on a page without a visual attached, so already this sounds like a good idea.

The illustrations are modern and accessible, and while the text isn't the same as what Shakespeare wrote, it is translated sensibly, and the edits are pretty smooth.

But who's this best suited for? The graphic novel format may lead one to believe that anyone who's capable of following illustrated stories (comic books, manga, animated programs, etc.) will be able to comprehend the story, but this is not the case. Despite a good translation, the story is still just as intricate, carefully crafted and multi-layered as the original. Perhaps a more "dumbed down" translation would have benefitted the graphic novel concept, since some of the longer speeches (including Queen Mab) are woefully ill suited to this type of format.

Also, and this is mostly a warning to parents of junior high and high school students, some of Shakespeare's bawdiest jokes and sexual puns are spelled out quite graphically in the translation. This book is not rated, but I would NOT recommend it be published with a warning about this!

Recommended only for fans of the play who want to see an old favorite from a different angle. NOT recommended for anyone who expects an easy path to understand the play (which should be seen live or via DVD, ideally--even a poorly performed play is better than a play without any performance at all) .

Editorial Review:

No Fear Shakespeare Graphic Novels is a series based on the translated texts of the plays found in No Fear Shakespeare. The original No Fear series made Shakespeare’s plays much easier to read, but these dynamic visual adaptations are impossible to put down. Each of the titles is illustrated in its own unique style, but all are distinctively offbeat, slightly funky, and appealing to teen readers. Each book will feature:

Illustrated cast of characters A helpful plot summary Line-by-line translations of the original play Illustrations that show the reader exactly what’s happening in each scene—making the plot and characters even clearer than in the original No Fear Shakespeare books

My children just love this book. They go back to it time and time again. Solving the puzzles and getting to see the pictures is a real treat.(and it encourages problem solving and persistance.) I highly recommend this book for children between 2-5.

Fabulous study guide! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I used this book to prepare for the AP Psychology exam and was thrilled! I had never taken a psychology course before and thought it would be challenging to try to succeed on the exam to earn college credit. It was easy to read and the practice test questions were extremely similar to those on the actual exam. I was excited to hear that I received a 5 on my exam... and the only aid I used was this book! I would recommend this to anyone.

Editorial Review:

This updated manual presents an extensive subject review covering all test topics plus three full-length practice tests that reflect the actual AP Psychology Exam in length, subject matter, and degree of difficulty. All test questions are answered and explained. Test topics reviewed include research methods, the biological basis of behavior, sensation and perception, states of consciousness, learning, cognition, personality, abnormal psychology, and treatment of disorders. This manual also presents an overview of the test, extra multiple-choice questions for practice and review, test-taking tips, and an analysis of the test’s essay question with a sample essay.

Indispensible Resource For Those Dealing with AD(H)D Student 5 out of 5 stars.
196 of 198 people found this review helpful.

This book is an invaluable aide for parents, educators, and professionals dealing with the challenges faced by AD(H)D students in school. It is a book that can be given directly to students as well. Written in a clear, visually appealing format, it presents worksheets and quick exercises that guide the late grade school, middle school or high school student to an understanding of how this disorder affects their ability to learn. It provides information such as how to choose and adopt various study techniques that will help children with AD(H)D become successful students. It coaches students in using active study techniques to remember what they read, or to develop written reports. Students are not resistant to using the concepts because of how they are presented and is a book that has application to non ADHD students as well. I highly recommend this workbook and have found it much more much more useful that the "Putting on the Brakes" book by the same authors. Of all the self help books I have lent out to people, this is one that people use so much they forget to return it! I just keep buying more copies because I don't want to be without the book.

Editorial Review:

A companion to ADD-and-ADHD-specialists Quinn and Stern's Putting on the Brakes, this best-selling workbook uses pictures, puzzles, mazes, and games to help young readers learn a range of skills and put their knowledge about ADHD into action! Encouraging instructions provide support even when a given project seems too tough.

The title says it all! 4 out of 5 stars.

This curriculum has been our math staple for the past 3 years now. The only thing missing is some of the basic instruction for new or difficult concepts. But if you know basic math, then you can cover what's lacking with no problem. Hopefully this has laid the foundation for when we move on to Saxon...

scattered topics 4 out of 5 stars.

I enjoy the information in the book. However the topics are not in order. For example, the topic of money may be on page 2,60, and 115. That's the only thing I did not like about this book.
