Great edition of a great play 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I really enjoyed reading this edition of the play. Each scene is proceded by a summary of the secene and followed by commentary on the scene, and there are notes alongside the text explaining unusual words/phrases. As an actor, I have been reading Shakespeare for quite awhile, and I still found this book very helpful. If you are new to reading Shakespeare, I particularly recommend this because you will find it very helpful.

Editorial Review:

TheLiterature Made Easy Series is more than just plot summaries. Each book describes a classic novel and drama by explaining themes, elaborating on characters, and discussing each author's unique literary style, use of language, and point of view. Extensive illustrations and imaginative, enlightening use of graphics help to make each book in this series livelier, easier, and more fun to use than ordinary literature plot summaries. An unusual feature, "Mind Map" is a diagram that summarizes and interrelates the most important details that students need to understand about a given work. Appropriate for middle and high school students.

Misfiled classic 5 out of 5 stars.

Cracking good pirate tale hits all the high points of treachery, adventure, narrow escapes, and treasure hunting, usually misfiled in the Juvenile section.

"Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!"

See my review of the new novel Silver: My Own Tale As Written by Me with a Goodly Amount of Murder that tells more of the story behind Long John Silver.

Maybe I'll be a pirate someday! Aye? 5 out of 5 stars.

My dad and I are reading this book, and we think it's totally awesome! If you are 11 or 12, you may want to read this book with an adult, but you'll love the adventure and pirates, the treasure map and the Hispanola. I think I am going to start learning pirate lingo now, so I'll be ready if Long John shows up at my door! If you read this book you'll have to rate it a five star because of the adventure. Kids, hope you can get YOUR dad to read it with you!!

When former pirate Billy Bones leaves an old sea chest and an ancient treasure map at the Admiral Benbow Inn, young Jim Hawkins embarks on a treasure-hunting adventure that takes him to the South Seas.

Deception and Treachery 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 2 people found this review helpful.

William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was a dramatist whose genius is universally acknowledged, with a reputation as an actor, playwright and poet. He lived in an age of vast and significant changes characterised by the rise of the middle class and of a centralised government and the disappearance of medieval religious beliefs. England was transforming into a modern state. This was a time when self-realisation, self-respect and boldness of thought and action was idealised. Shakespeare's drama merely reflected the dramatic times of the age.

Shakespeare's genius can be reflected by the variety of his productions, where out of the 36 plays he has left, no two are alike and he managed to articulate the diverse subjects with exceptional expertise, handling both tragedies and comedies with ease.

Macbeth is a tragedy, intended to teach us a lesson about the human condition. The play is a tragedy about a wealthy Scottish noble called Macbeth who kills his king to gain the throne. During Shakespeare's time, this was a terrible thing to do, and from then on, Macbeth was doomed to die a tragic death.

The play starts with three witches confronting the great Scottish general Macbeth on his victorious return from a war between Scotland and Norway. The witches predict that he will one day become king. They also predict that another General called Banquo will be the father of kings, although he will not ascend the throne himself. The Scottish king, Duncan, decides that he will confer the title of the traitorous Cawdor on the heroic Macbeth. Macbeth, with the urging of his evil and ambitious wife murder King Duncan and ascends to the throne of Scotland.

Macbeth and his evil wife begin to do strange things, partly because of what they have done and also because they never get a whole night's sleep. Macbeth thinks he has to kill two of his former friends because he believes that they threaten his new throne. His efforts fail and he is eventually killed.

Editorial Review:

The Shakespearean Originals Series takes as its point of departure the question: "What is it that we read Shakespeare?" The answer may seem self-evident: we read the words that Shakespeare wrote. But do we? In the case of all the major editions of Shakespeare available in the market, the fact of the matter is that many of the words that we read in an edition of, say, Hamlet, never appeared in the text as it was printed during or shortly after Shakespeare's own lifetime. They are the interpetations and interpolations of a series of editors who have been systematically changign Shakespeare's text from the eighteenth century onwards. Series has caused much debate, interest and favorable reviews within the academic community. Each volume in the series follows the same format and is produced to the same design. Students, researchers, teachers of Literary Studies and Shakepeare Studies. A Harvester Wheatsheaf Book.

Stunning, moving, richly detailed 5 out of 5 stars.

I read this book a few summers ago, and I couldn't put it down. O'Neill's exhaustive research--including many personal interviews--helps solidify this book's place in the pantheon of great historical non-fiction of the 20th century. "The Firecracker Boys" picks up after World War II when the United States government, eager to find peaceful uses for nuclear power, proposed building a harbor near the remote Alaskan village of Point Hope using megaton nuclear explosions in a plan called "Project Chariot." The ambitious plan, which supporters felt could redeem nuclear weapons before the very eyes of a generation who saw its horrific power demonstrated on Japan, met fierce resistance among biologists, anthropologists, and most importantly local Alaska Native villagers of the region. These opponents feared radiation, debris fallout, and that the government continued to deny or downplay dangers of Project Chariot. O'Neill charts, in beautiful detail, the high-minded idealism of Project Chariot supporters against the burgeoning grassroots resistance which demanded fair recognition of Project Chariot's irreversible damage.

While Project Chariot first arrived, and met its doom, in a remote quarter of the globe, this story is firmly fixed on the world stage. This is not the anecdotal story of a failed gimmick; rather, this is the genesis of the movement towards limiting nuclear power, recognizing environmental impact, and treating Alaska Natives as more than haphazard bystanders to industrial progress. People, personalities, subplots, and larger impacts for the whole of humanity enliven this story and give Project Chariot a rich context. I whole-heartedly recommend this book.

Inaccurate 2 out of 5 stars.

I bought this for my daughter and as I was leafing through it, I discovered a major inaccuracy. In the science section, the phases of the moon are not all defined correctly. For a company whose motto is, "It's fun to be smart", you'd think they'd do a better job of checking their facts. (By the way, a gibbous moon is larger than a quarter moon, not smaller than a crescent moon.) I had to mark them lower because there may be other inaccuracies I have not yet come across. Good reminder to parents and teachers - always check the info before giving it to kids.

Very disorganized book 3 out of 5 stars.

My only problem with this workbook is that information within it is not organized. All math topics are mixed up and it is very hard to nail any specific math task without jupming 20 pages at a time.

Highly Recommended 5 out of 5 stars.

We have used many workbooks for practice but this workbook has proved far better for our kid. We tried scholastic, school speciality and some others but they were all pretty basic and our son finished them in no more than two weeks. With this workbok, style is pretty and well organized, contents are just enough and topics well presented. Highly recommended for practice lessons.

World History Flash Cards 3 out of 5 stars.

Very disappointing

AP World History Flash Cards 1 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I purchased these flash cards for my daughter to help her prepare for the AP World History exam. She did not think the cards were helpful at all. She found that they had too much info on each card, not what flash cards typically have. She had hoped that it was one quick question on the front with the answer on the back. Her plan was to study with her friends that were also taking the exam, but the cards had too much info on the back.

Editorial Review:

Flash cards are convenient and highly useful study tools— a great way to absorb a host of details when preparing for an exam. This brand-new boxed set of 350–400 flash cards presents World History topics with key information on reverse sides. The set is divided into six major historical eras:

  • Time Immemorial – 600 C.E.
  • 600 – 1450
  • 1450 – 1750
  • 1750 – 1914
  • 1914 – The Present

Although designed primarily as a study aid for the Advanced Placement World History Exam, these flash cards can be used as a preparation aid by students taking world history exams of virtually all kinds. Students preparing for the Advanced Placement Exam can also use these cards profitably in tandem with Barron’s How to Prepare for the AP World History, 2nd Edition.

Good practices, BUT pages are not pencil-friendly (meaning you can't see the writing, but just an indent). Therefore, my child has had to write everything in pen, which isn't a good thing when you're "practicing".

A rare American novel 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

One of the greatest tragedies regarding this book is that it has become required reading in many English classes. What a shame. Please don't mistake my intention here; one should come to this novel in a wholly voluntary way, with an open heart toward the telling of a good story. Dorris is, certainly, one of America's finest storytellers. This novel is rich with imagery and infused with the colors of Native American life. But it is essentially a novel about people and relationships undefined by race or color. It is a story of heartbreak and redemption, told by a man who knew personally of these things. As a feminist writer, I came to this book with a bias; I resented his presumption that he could tell a woman's story--several women's stories--from a woman's point of view. It taught me a lesson about my own prejudice, and brought me to a place of greater tolerance. Dorris draws together the fabric of three separate lives in this novel... and creates the warm quilt of a shared family history. Those who come to this novel of their own volition will not be disappointed.

    Editorial Review:

The national bestseller "A Yellow Raft In Blue Water" is a fierce saga of three generations of Indian women, beset by hardships and torn by angry secrets, yet inextricably joined by the bonds of kinship. This concise supplement to Michael Dorris' "A Yellow Raft in Blue Water" helps students understand the overall structure of the work, actions and motivations of the characters, and the social and cultural perspective of the author.

How to get young brain cells to prance 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is one in a series of workbooks, each of which offers an abundance of learning activities, exercises, and games that are presented with superb production values. Appropriate to the given age level, much of the material focuses on basic subjects such natural science, mathematics, history, and social studies while enabling children to strengthen their reading, reasoning, and writing skills. The editors of Brain Quest believe that:

"All kids are smart - though they learn at their own speed

All kids learn best when they're having fun

All kids deserve the chance to reach their potential - given the tools they need, there's no limit how far they can go!"

I agree, while presuming to add that children will learn more and have more fun meanwhile if, when completing various exercises, adults are involved. As a parent of four and a grandparent of ten, I can personally attest to the pleasure an adult will also have. Each volume in the series is a WORK book. Exercises are completed with crayolas or pencils on the page on which it appears. Correct answers are provided. One caveat: Resist the temptation to control the learning process as a child completes an exercise.

This volume, Grade 3 (ages 8-9), was written by Jan Meyer, with Anna Shults serving as consulting editor. It is worth noting that Shults was a 2004 National Teacher of the Year Regional Award Winner. The material consists of organized curriculum-based exercises that help children to gain an understanding of spelling and vocabulary, language arts, reading, writing, math skills, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions and decimals, measurement, time and money, word problems, social studies, and science. Also included are more than 150 stickers, an all-new Brain Quest Mini-Card Deck, and a fold-out "Times Table" poster.

Here is a representative selection of exercises:

There's an Ant on My Aunt!
Complete each sentence with the right homophones. (Page 27)

    Whatever Do You Mean?
Write what you think each highlighted idiom really means. (48)

    A Native American Myth
    Read the story.
[Then] fill in each missing cause and effect. (82 & 83)

    That's the Point!
Read the persuasive paragraph. Then answer the questions.
Now it's your turn to write a persuasive paragraph.
First think about an issue you feel strongly about.
Use some of the persuasive words from the Word Box to strengthen your writing. (124 & 125)

    Multiplying by One
Find the product of each multiplication problem. (178)

    Rosie's Restaurant
    Read each fraction problem.
Write the equation in the box.
Then write your answer on the line. (214 & 215)

    It's About Time
Write the time below each clock.
    [Next] Answer the questions. (240 & 241)

    What Came First?
Use the time line and your knowledge of history to answer each question.
    Circle the correct answer. (277)

Each of the volumes in this series (pre-K through Grade 4) would be an excellent book for parents, grandparents, and others to purchase and then share with a child at an appropriate stage of her or his development. No doubt there are precocious children who will prefer more challenging material associated with later grades but I think it would be a mistake to rush the learning process. Worse yet, to indicate little interest in it.

Congratulations to the Workman Publishing Company and especially to the editors of Brain Quest. How pleased they must be to know that their materials have already helped to nourish so many young minds and to delight so many young hearts and, fortunately, will continue to do so for the development of other children in months and years to come
