This is a pretty good review. I wished they had more tests though, two is not quite enough for preparation. I liked the first part of the book where it talks about the qualifications for the tests and the national merit scholarship, however, it should be more detailed. The techniques are useful. I think the problems may be a little on the easier side.

Exactly what I was looking for as a 4th grade teacher using 6 Trait writing in my classroom. The rubrics are easy to use and modify. The "forms" inside make understanding 6 Traits for young writers easier.

What I love about the 6 Traits is the accessibility across the grade levels. My initial experiences with 6 Traits was in the elementary school and I currently teach 8th grade. I have not found this resource to be helpful with older writers as most of the language is for young writers. With some of my students writing at the high school, even college level, it seems inappropriate. I use picture books for inspiration, but the checklists are too young. I will continue to collect 6 Traits materials as I found it is the best way to teach writing effectively.

The book is really helpful when you need help on the verbal section because it is full of good questions and explanations. The only problem is that the math problems are too easy. Compared to the real test the math problems are bad. I recommend this for you people who need help with the verbal sections.
It would have gotten a 5 star if it had harder math problems.

Wow!! I am in 8th grade and taking the High School Regent Earth Science course, and before I bought this book I was getting 50s and 60s on tests (my quarter average was a 84) and after I did the review questions in each chapter I havn't gotten anything below a 85 (now my average is a 94)!! This made my average go up 10 points, and if it can work for me, it can definitely work for you. My mom said it was the best money she ever spent, and I also bought the Barron's Regents Earth Science Exams and Answers book, but unfortunately it was a "little" overused and I can't read anything in it.. O WELL THIS REALLY HELPS! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT! it even has a full exam in the back and a vocab section that shows vocab words to know for the test, it's really good!

GED Matemáticas (Steck-Vaughn) 4 out of 5 stars.

This book is good for preparing for the GED in Spanish because, like the other Steck-Vaughn GED books, it has short and concise lessons, relevant exercises, and detailed answers in the back. The practice tests are also very useful.
What I and my students have trouble with is the Spanish translation and how this can cause miscommunication. This is present in all the Steck-Vaughn books. For example, the wording seems to be a direct translation from English so that an item which asks about pairs of pants sounds like it is asking about two items of clothing because the word "pair" in Spanish is not used in the same way. A "pair" in Spanish would be two. In math, this is an obvious difficulty. The dialect and word choice is also often not understood by my Mexican students here in California. In general, we deal with these issues as part of the larger issue of Spanish in the U.S. and appreciate the clearness of the lessons and the detailed answers.

I used this math book to tutor my little brother who struggled in 6th grade math for 7th grade. We got though it fairly well, the book provides fairly good examples and builds a foundation for subsequent skills step by step.

My one complaint would be that whoever edited this book (especially the answer key) needs to pay more attention. I often quickly checked my brother's work with the key, and made him redo a problem one or two times only to find out he was right and the key was wrong. One page of word problems had 6 problems, the answer key had five answers and some of those were labled with the wrong problem number.

One or two of the world problems were unclear also.

I would just make sure you pay close attention to the problems when you correct them and make sure. By and large the problems in the key were right, but there was still more errors than necessary especially when this book was presumably edited by an adult where the book was designed for 11-13 year olds.

I just feel sorry for kids who are using this book at the orders of someone who would go by the key no matter what.

I have to agree on lack of instructions. You are left on your own to explain the concepts or techniques to your kids. I have used the whole series from Grade 1 through Grade 5. But the standard is a bit low. Right now my 1 st grade kid is doing 4 grade Math and 3 rd grade kid is finishing 5 th grade Math.

Bottom line, Gives a good foundation and lots of practice. Once
we finish the 5 th grade book, we will look else where to continue. We are definitely happy with what our kids have learned from this.

My son was almost 4 when we got this a couple of months ago, and he really likes it (still does), but it's a bit frustrating in the following way: many of the pictures that it uses for learning letters (e.g. "circle the picture that begins with u") are of vocabulary items that 4 year olds don't necessarily know. E.g. for "u" they had a batter and someone who I guessed was an umpire. But my 4-year-old doesn't know what an umpire is, even though he's cognitively just at the right level for this book in the sense that he finds it fun to do, and when he knows what the pictures are he can pick the right one. Another page had a frilly heart as one of the choices for "v", and you were supposed to know that the heart was a valentine. My kid has a pretty big vocabulary for a 4-year-old, and knows the word valentine, but it just was a little abstract for him. The result is that I have to help him a lot, and I think it'd be more fun for him if he felt he could do it himself. If anyone knows of a similar book with more age-appropriate vocabulary pictures, it'd be great if they could post that in a review, since he does really seem to enjoy the activities in the book, and views getting to do the book as a treat.

Essence of communication today 5 out of 5 stars.

The importance of writing today is essential because technology has given the world the opportunity to communicate with the written word via the computer and internet not to mention through out ones education and life. With this in mind it is essential to begin showing children the means for an intelligent tranfer of ones ideas and thoughts. With this series, beginning as soon as possible, you can be assured that your child or student will acquire the essential craft of translating his or her words legibally and meaningfully to others conveying what is meant to be given.
