Not the best resource. 3 out of 5 stars.
24 of 24 people found this review helpful.

We found this book to be lacking in the number of entries/words it carries. My daughter is in a 3rd grade GT class, and a number of the words on her spelling list are not even included in this book. I find the book to be average, at best.

Scholastic Dictionary of Syn, Ant, and Hom 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a quick reference for classroom use. Sometimes a teacher cannot come up with one of these elements and this reference helps.

Good quick reference 4 out of 5 stars.

A good quick reference book, but I will say that some words are not listed. It is focused for 2nd - 5th grade in my opinion. A handy addition for a home reference library!

Great Fun For Kids! 5 out of 5 stars.

A Perfect Children's Thesaurus 5 out of 5 stars.
37 of 37 people found this review helpful.

The American Heritage Thesaurus is a must reference book for any home with children. Each researched word, printed in blue large bold print, is accompanied with the a description, printed in black, of the part(s) of speech the word can be used, several best choice synonyms, and a few lesser utilized synonyms. In addition, an example sentence incorporating the researched word is provided. Occassionally a list of antonyms is provided for the researched word. Researched words are easily located as a result of a large space between each word. Each two page spread usually contains one or two color photographs adding some visual appeal. In summary, this thesaurus is highly recommended and is an invaluable resource for any child of reading age.

Editorial Review:

What would you do if your teacher told you to stop using the word "nice" so much? If you had the Scholastic Children's Thesaurus, you'd flip through it until you found "nice" between "new" and "noise." Then you'd find your options: "pleasant," "agreeable," "good-natured," "delightful," and "fantastic" (defined as "extremely nice or good!"). Nearby, a color bar warns, "Nice is a very general word to describe someone you like or something that makes you feel good, but it is not very specific. Be careful not to overuse it. Often a stronger or more specific word is better." At this point, you might be rolling your eyes because your teacher already said all that, but you'll be a more pleasant, agreeable, good-natured, delightful, and fantastic writer for your efforts!

John K. Bollard's thesaurus, playfully illustrated by Mike Reed, contains more than 500 main "headwords" and 2,500 synonyms, but if you can't find the word you're looking for--"energetic," for example--you can flip to the index in the back where you'll find "Energetic--See Lively." Lively leads you to "active," "energetic," and "vigorous." All synonyms include a definition as well as one or more sample sentences. This fine thesaurus--paired with the Scholastic Children's Dictionary--will help any young writer make appropriate word choices, think more critically about language, and therefore proceed to the head of the class! the book I received has bad quality 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I am not happy at the book I received. the hard cover is upside down, and many pages inside have been cut. Many pages' page number have been cut off. The quality of the book is bad. I don't know how to return it, otherwise, I am going to return.

I am very unhappy about this order.

Good Buy 5 out of 5 stars.

This thesaurus is well laid out, concise, and age appropriate. It's a great addition to our homeschool resource library.

Must have reference! Homeschooling or not..... 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My children and I absolutely love this thesaurus! We didn't really use a thesaurus much until we started The Institute For Excellence in Writing student writing program. The only thesaurus we had was one I bought when I was in highschool. Most thesauruses don't help the children know which synonyms are good for their context or not. This one does an absolutley superb job! I am greatly impressed.
Now when we edit our work, we do it to everything not just writing class, and it is much more enjoyable. I don't have to hear "but it was in the thesaurus". There is a sentence for each set of common context synonyms to assist in choosing the correct synonym (or antonym).
As a homeschooling mom I have to say this is a must have reference tool, it adds so much clarity to such a vague concept for children. I like it so much we now have 2!

My 4th grader: It's easier to use, it's totally cool! The words are bigger. It tells you what words don't have synonyms so you don't go looking. (There are blocks called Word Groups. Words that are associated but not really synonyms are located throughout the book in blue blocks with descriptions. For example: if you look up lizard, instead of finding synonyms, you get a blue word group block with the words chameleon, gecko, gila monster, and iguana.)

My 2nd Grader: It separates them so you don't get mixed up so your teacher doesn't tell you your sentence is wrong.

Editorial Review:

Designed especially for students in grades 7-10. It's advanced vocabulary has been carefully selected to meet the growing demands on student's writing skills, and it's clear format makes it easy to find the right word for every occasion.

Editorial Review:

Any young student should find this intuitive, well-designed thesaurus quite helpful, as well as useful, practical, handy, beneficial, and versatile.

If you have an aspiring wordsmith on your hands--or just a kid who's renowned for his prolific deployment of the words nice and okay--this 204-page thesaurus offers well over 1,000 primary entries and more than 10,000 supplementary entries using a clever on-the-page index. Instead of a traditional index, the Scholastic Student Thesaurus lists supplemental entries alphabetically on every single page. For example, helpful doesn't appear between helper and herb as a primary entry, but the index below on the same page refers young synonym-searchers to the main entry for useful. Each entry also contains part-of-speech labels, and many include usage notes and other synonym and antonym cross-references.

With its clean look, thoughtful introduction, and kid-friendly accessibility, the Scholastic Student Thesaurus makes a fine introduction to what may quickly become an indispensable, essential, fundamental writing tool. (Ages 10 and older) --Paul Hughes

Just what I needed 5 out of 5 stars.

I could not expect anything more from a thesauras. This has all the words I, through my preteen years, have needed, without boggling my mind with lots of words that I never try to use. I don't feel overwhelmed, but I DO find the information I need.

Scholastic Dictionary of Synonyma, Antonyms, and Homonyms 4 out of 5 stars.

Used by my son at school. He said that it is pretty good and his teacher reccomends it.

A dissapointment 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book has, unfortunately, been a disappointment for me. From reading the reviews written by others, I had high hopes for it, but it has not lived up to them in my family's particular experience. I bought this dictionary specifically for my son (age 12) to use, but literally every time he has tried to use it to look up a word he needs, it happens to be a word that has not been included. Just our dumb luck, I guess, but it seems this book is better suited to those in grades 1-4 and probably not beyond that.

Editorial Review:

Our bestselling (over 1.5 million copies sold!) Clear and Simple Thesaurus Dictionary has been fully REVISED and UPDATED, and now it lists a definition, part of speech, synonyms, antonyms, and a sample sentence for each entry. It has been formatted to be easy for kids to use, and is every kidÂ’s perfect reference to English words! The thesaurus and dictionary elements together in one book make it easy for readers to learn new words as they look up familiar ones, too.

I bought this book for a 5 year old. I wanted to teach my 5 year old how to look up words. This is the best children's dictionary I have ever read. Now I purchsed 2 others but this is the easiest book for any child to use and the most fun. I love the photos and the simplicity.

Pretty, but too basic... 3 out of 5 stars.

I was looking for a dictionary for my first grade classroom - something appealing and complete, but focused on children age 6-7. I love most DK books, and while this one is visually appealing, it was missing a lot of basic words. For example, "turtle" is no where to be found. Perhaps by adding the thesaurus they cut out some of the other basics. I ended up selecting another DK dictionary, the DK Children's Illustrated Dictionary instead. The American Heritage First Dictionary is also excellent - Houghton Mifflin ISBN0618280073.

Editorial Review:

Bringing the amazing world of words to children ages five and older. With over 700 illustrations designed to attract young children and 4,000 age-appropriate vocabulary words, the DK First Dictionary sets a new standard in linguistic reference for children six and up. Many entries include opposites, similar words, and word origins, alongside phonetic spellings and easy-to-follow definitions. Word Detective" games and "Word Banks" help children expand their vocabulary while having fun."

I bought this for my 6 year old. She loves to read and really loves to write stories. She can use this book, but it will also grow with her. She should benefit from this one for several years. In the meantime, we have a lot of fun as she's learning "what another word for___?"

Editorial Review:

The Scholastic Pocket Thesaurus is an innovative, easy-to-use title created for the many kids who get frustrated when they try to use a thesaurus. If they look up a word and "it's not there," many students will give up rather than turn to the indexes in the back of their books to redirect their searches. The Scholastic Pocket Thesaurus's innovative same-page index solves this problem.
