A real sleep aid.... 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This is a brilliant book. I purchased it when my 2.5 year old son was refusing to sleep to try to explain to him that everyone sleeps, and why everyone sleeps. I could relate the facts in the book to things he understood, including when Caroline (a character in the book) goes to sleep and how she gets cranky when she doesn't get her nap. Thereafter he would say he needed his sleep so that he wasnt cranky like Caroline! He loves reading the book before nap and bed time - and the last few pages about drifting off to sleep help him unwind and relax ready for his own sleep. I also learnt a few things from this book - who knew that chickens eyelids go up, or that snakes have no eyelids!

Editorial Review:

Elementary discussion of the importance of sleep and what happens to our brains and bodies during slumber.

New Look! Relaunched with new jackets and 8 pages of new text!

The skeleton is the framework of the body. It supports, moves, and protects, allowing us to walk, run, jump, and swim. Eyewitness Skeleton brings its complexity and ingenuity of design vividly to life. Starting with the human skeleton, it explains how each set of bones functions. It examines in detail the construction of the skull, spine and rib cage, hands, arms, legs, and feet. Comparisons are drawn with the bones of birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, insects, and mammals. See the 206 different bones in the human body, how your skull differs from a lion's or a chimp's, how teeth grow, and what each one is for, and what the inside of a bone looks like. Learn how bones mend themselves when they break, why half the bones in your body are in your hands and feet, how many toes a horse has and what has happened to the tail you once had. Discover which are the smallest bones in the human body, why some creatures wear their skeletons on the outside and what animal once owned the oldest bones ever found on Earth. And much, much more!

Beware- Grossology at it's WORST! 1 out of 5 stars.
21 of 27 people found this review helpful.

Now I have to say first that this review comes from a person who is a first grade teacher and a parent. I previewed this book while preparing to do a unit on health and nutrition, and was astounded at the content of this book. I know that grossology has become popular among kids, but this book is beyond even grossology gross!

This book does not even take a realistic look at grossology by explaining the functions and why we have them, instead it makes fun of those functions. For example, the book talks about how the Romans ate flamingo tongues and other revolting delicacies, filling themselves until they could eat no more, then would make themselves throw up and eat again. Hmm, in a world of anorexia and bulemia, I'm not sure this is good or even useful information for young children! Constipation and other subjects are also discussed in a way that kids any age would not be able to seriously look at without laughing and being embarassed.

Parents in the grossology craze of today, I highly recommend that you at least preview this book before handing it over to your child. Teachers, if you are wanting to teach grossology, I strongly urge you to make another choice, this one just misses the mark of being a useful tool for the classroom. Absoloutely avoid this book if you are trying to teach basic health and nutrition, you may get some offended students and parents!

Wonderful! My boys love it! 5 out of 5 stars.
27 of 27 people found this review helpful.

My sons are 2 and 4 and this is one of their favorite books. It discusses so much that is mysterious to kids, and in an entertaining way. One of their favorite parts is the see-through page section. This section illustrates many body systems: the muscles, the nervous system, the circulatory system. The reproductive organs may not be shown, but how babies are conceived is handled in a very thoughtful way. My boys love to talk about how they were once inside of me!

Simply great!! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book has been read over and over (and over!) by my 2 1/2 year old. It is an exceptional introduction to the human body. Most fascinating is the "see-through" section that shows front and back views of different sections of the body such as the skeletal, muscular, and circulatory systems, and every major organ. Very clever! Importantly, the figure depicted in the book is that of a small female child - kids can easily identify with this image! It provides technical/scientific information in a very user-friendly manner. I can't wait to get other books in the series. Highly recommended.
