Frankly fun & informative 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

You, the reader, must assist Dr. Frankenstein in his quest to create a living, breathing human being. This book does not contain tons of bells and whistles, i.e. flaps, maps, stickers, etc. It's brilliance is born out of fabulous illustrations and photographs, a good, clean page layout, and concise, interesting text. While the book may be written for 8 to 12-year-old students, the other huge bonus is that the book has durable board book like pages that can surmount the destructibility of younger readers . The only drawback is the book's price. It's $24.95, but I think $19.95 might have been more suitable. Even with the higher price point, though, the card-stock pages and padded cover are going to allow this book to survive more than one reader per household, giving it a bit of added value.

Good book for preschoolers, but one page too many 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I was very excited to receive this book after having read a glowing review in my local newspaper. The details seem to be just right for 4-8 year olds, the published target audience. The author deals with most of the body differences between the genders, as well as changes that each can expect while growing up [though oddly omitting any mention of breast changes or nursing a baby]. While intercourse is not noted as the means for fertilizing the egg to make a baby, she does go into appropriate detail about female and male reproductive organs. My only reservation for sharing this with my 5 and 4 year old is one page that talks about 'touching yourself.' While I am not so naive to think this is not going to happen, it seems that this topic might better suit 8-12 year olds than younger children. While the author handles the issue even without mentioning the word 'masturbation,' my personal opinion is that my own children don't even need to have the concept introduced to them yet! We have decided to keep this book and wait to share it until they seem more self-aware and are asking questions, which at this point, they are not.
Overall, though, great book!

Editorial Review:

"Mom, where do babies come from?" Many parents live in fear of the day their child asks that question—which inevitably happens, often as early as the preschool years. Here is a picture book designed especially for young children who are becoming sexually aware but aren’t ready to learn about sexual intercourse. Written with warmth and honesty, Amazing You! presents clear and age-appropriate information about reproduction, birth, and the difference between girls’ and boys’ bodies. Lynne Cravath’s whimsical illustrations enliven the text, making this a book that parents will gladly share with their young ones.

A good introduction to the physiology of a dog, but it doesn't have to be that deep 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is part of the Uncover Book series. The center of the book is made up of layers of plastic anatomical models of the physiological systems of a dog. The text surround the cut-out middle contains various facts related to the featured system. Photos and illustrations further support the information presented. As you lift each page, you can isolate the featured system and reveal another layer.

The pages, front and back, cover the system suspended in the cut-out area. The areas covered are as follows: Best Friends (with a see-through image of Labrador Retriever), Skull and Jaws, Skeleton, Cardiopulmonary, Reproductive, Digestion, Nervous System, Muscle System, and Skin and Fur.

The book presents many facts related to featured system. In some cases, I was surprised to learn new things about dogs (a litter of pups can have more than one father). I also found myself wanted to enforce knowledge I already knew (calling one of my dogs over so I could feel his legs as I looked at the pictures and plastic representation of the dog's leg bones).

The book doesn't provide an exhaustive explanation of the systems (I found the cardiopulmonary section lacking). Some of the plastic representations are a little disappointing (the reproductive system is a small squiggle). The book is more of a springboard to delving deeper elsewhere if there is an interest.

Overall, I liked the book. I feel it would be of great interest to most young readers and would be enjoyed by the adults sharing it with them. The book is not just for dog owners. It would pair nicely with other books in the series so the reader could compare and contrast different species.

Editorial Review:

Petting a dog, running with her, playing fetch, or rubbing her belly reminds us of the importance of the friendship between people and their canine pets. Young readers learn all there is to know about their furry pals with this book. What makes them different from one another? What’s under the skin of a yellow Labrador retriever? These are some of the questions answered here. From beagles and basenjis to salukis and Samoyeds, Uncover a Dog takes an inside look at the special anatomical and behavioral characteristics that make dogs our most trusted and lovable animal companions.

Horns to Toes 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This wonderful Boynton book leads us through all the different parts of out bodies with three monsters. The book covers our horns (What did you say? You don't have horns? All the more power to ya!), head, ears, mouth, feet, toes, nose, eyes, tummy, belly button, back, tail (You don't have one of these either? You do have a tailbone at least don't you? Yes? Good. I was beginning to worry about you. I have a tail.), arms, legs, hands, fingers, teeth and tongues. Each time a body part is mentioned, the monsters are there to show theirs off. The monsters are, like any Boynton creature, as cute as can be. I especially like their big grins that show off their teeth. Like other Boynton books, the words rhyme and flow nicely. I like this one a lot, even if it isn't one of my absolute favorite Boynton books.

Nice intro to human anatomy 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This book is a great introduction to simple human anatomy that will be easily understood and enjoyed by preschool and primary school age children. Includes helpful, cartoon-like illustrations. It is full of information and also fun to read.

Good book with exception on one page!!! 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 17 people found this review helpful.

I decide to buy this book because I was looking for science books and books that could help my daughter learn about the human body. The book is absolutely great with the exception of one of the pages of the book. Sadly, there is one page in which the books say something about Halloween. In my case I don't celebrate Halloween and I always avoid anything that has to do with it. Unfortunately there is not way to know about the content of the book until you get it. I bought the book because I had not idea that there was something about Halloween in it and I want to alert other people so they don't make the same mistake I did.

Editorial Review:

How many bones are there in the human body? Which bone is the longest? Or the smallest? Without bones, you would be a blob, like a jellyfish or a worm. Our bones support us and protect our insides. They work together with our muscles to allow us to do all the things we do! So when you think of your bones, say "Thank you!"

This simple Step 1 introduction teaches young readers these facts and many more about the skeleton inside each of us!

The Nose Knows!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

A fantastic little book to teach the young ones about the sizes, shapes, and every other item concerning noses. There are elephants and birds, and other kinds of animals, and some suggestions about how noses are used as well as what would happen if we didn't have any noses. Terrific guidance for the youngsters and oldsters alike. Beautiful poetry and colors, all primary ones. Catchy and wonderful!!!

A very entertaining book! 4 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

"I see a nose on every face. I see noses every place!” Noses come in all shapes, colors, and sizes and are handy to have for sniffling, smelling, and . . . playing horns? This simple, sometimes silly story offers little ones a first ode to the nose and all that it does.

Editorial Review:

Did you know that your brain (yes, even yours) is roughly the size of a large grapefruit? Award-winning author Seymour Simon clearly and skillfully exposes the many wonders of the brain and nervous system in The Brain: Our Nervous System. Author of more than 150 children's books about science, including The Heart: Our Circulatory System, Muscles: Our Muscular System, and Bones: Our Skeletal System, Simon has a knack for piquing the curiosity of youngsters and clearly communicating scientific facts. The Brain, written for ages 8 and older, is a solid launching pad for further investigation of the organ that makes us who we are. Kids will love learning that our brains grow until we are 7 years old, that our spines have 33 vertebrae, and that our skulls are made of 28 bones. Large, full-color photographs and illustrations show the fascinating, if slightly nauseating, areas of the human brain--a positron computed tomography (PCT) photo, for example, shows the dramatically different levels of visual stimulation to the brain when your eyes are open or closed. Two to three paragraphs of large type per page, plus one full-bleed illustration per spread, help make The Brain just the right amount of information for one grapefruit-sized brain to take in. (Ages 8 and older) --Karin Snelson
