Just wonderful. Clear words, great tunes...fun and catchy. My daughter is only 18 months and she loves the cd. Right now she's just enjoying the beat...and, when she's older it will be fun for her to understand the lyrics. It's wonderful.

It's About Time!...Thanks Steve and Jane! 5 out of 5 stars.

MY BODYWORKS: All the "stuff" that us 50 plussers were'nt supposed to talk about when we were kids...and here it all is in plain english and real and funny to boot!
I had purchased this as a gift for my 5 year old niece last Christmas, and since it wasn't opened until christmas eve, Guess who was howling and dancing while trimming the tree?...yes, all the grown up kids!
I never thought of learning as being fun...but The Schoenbergs are changing that with text and music like this....Keep writing!

Most excellent purchase! 5 out of 5 stars.

I actually first looked at this book just because it only had a one star rating and I wondered why. When I learned that, it was because it had children's level sex ed I bought it immediately. My 5 year old was trying to figure out what a birthday was for and I needed a little visual assist to help him understand that he came from my belly on that day. Really, the sex ed of this book is perfect for small children. It shows a big blow up of an egg surrounded by sperm. It has two basic anatomy drawings of what is in a woman and what is in a man with no deep detail; they are small and dull in comparison to the Sperm and Egg multicolor blow up of a microscope picture. It shows on the next two pages a baby developing in the womb. It's just drawings and it has an ultra sound of the profile of a baby's head. Nothing about how the baby gets in there, nothing about how it comes out, just very basic things a small child can understand (I highly recommend it for the 5 year old set). It is very colorful and shows much of the anatomy in relation to children's bodies.
The whole book is wonderful. It is drawings and pictures of all the major systems of the body. They are detailed enough that you can see all the stuff that is under our skin, but it is written simply. On the muscles of the face, rather than name them they say, "These muscles make you blink, these muscles make you smile." Very kid friendly and related to questions kids will ask. This is good for a beginner reader who is old enough to be curious about how the body works. It also has little boxes at the bottom of many pages with experiments that kids can do to give hands on visuals about the lessons presented. My son has been fascinated by it since it arrived and looks through it at least once a day. He spends time marveling at the pictures and how cool people are on the inside. There is nothing gruesome in it though it does broach things like available artificial body parts. I guess it could be useful in explaining Grandma or Grandpa's operation. What I like the most is, it has real anatomical pictures with captions that are kid friendly and easy to understand. I highly recommend this for small children so long as you are comfortable with them knowing about all of their body parts and not just some of them.

Editorial Review:

A reference section at the back of the book includes a glossary, an index, and an 'Amazing facts' section. Special Features: Over 1,000 appealing, colorful photographs and illustrations. Clear and easy-to-understand definitions. Related activities and projects. Vocabulary carefully chosen for the 5-8 yr. reading level. Cross-references encourage further exploration.

AWESOME BOOK! 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I'm studying for an equine massage therapy class I'm about to take. And though the homework course they give usually has great illustrations to go with it - for the musculature system - I just really needed a better to see and understand drawing. So I bought this book for a few dollars and then another book for 20 or so dollars. Both are good, but I use this fantastic, very inexpensive little book ALL the time! It was EXACTLY what I need and has proven to be an invaluable asset in helping me understand where the muscles lie etc.

A great way for kids and adults to learn 5 out of 5 stars.

This is an inexpensive yet excellent anatomy learning tool for the horse. Great coverage of all the major systems with all the identifying terms. My 6 and 9 year olds dove right into it.

Editorial Review:

Over 100 accurate drawings examine the external and internal anatomy of the horse: the skeleton, muscles, nervous system, and major organs, including the organs of locomotion. All are clearly labeled and explained. Also included are notes on the evolution of the horse as well as general health and care issues.

How Many Teeth? 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is an excellent educational tool. I am a public health dental hygienist and I use this book in grades K-2. The bright pictures and clever rhymes make it very entertaining for children. It is a great way to teach kids about their mouths and oral health!

Humours, rhymming, informative 5 out of 5 stars.

When my 5 year old lost his first tooth, he was asking all sorts of questions: WHY did I lose a tooth, WHEN will I lose more....

Thi sbook answers those questions. It has a chart which looks inside the gums to show a new tooth pushing out the old. The book alternates between a story line and a poem. At the end it gets funny with a boy not being able to sing the rhyme like the others because he lost 2 teeth and he "thounds funny".

I let my son's reactions rate books: this is a 5.

Editorial Review:

When you were a baby, you didn't have any teeth at all. Then as you grew, your teeth started to come in. First one, then two - and finally, twenty teeth in all!

But you won't keep these teeth forever. First one, then two, will wiggle loose. Maybe you've lost some of your first teeth already. When the little teeth come out and the big teeth come in, everyone can see - you're growing up.

"Hands can clap while voices sing. Hands can do all kinds of things." Hands Can, by author Cheryl Willis Hudson and photographer John-Francis Bourke, is a celebration of the wonder of little hands.

Hands Can describes and shows children using their hands in a variety of activities. It also shows a variety of hands. There are girl hands, boy hands, toddler hands, "big-kid" hands and hands of many races.

Young children will love Hands Can, with its simple, rhyming text, bright colors and delightful photographs depicting children having fun with their hands. They will want to wave hello like the little boy in beginning of the story. They will want to play Peekaboo like the little girl near the end. They will want to read this book again and again.

Editorial Review:

Photographs and simple, rhyming text present different things that hands can do, such as hold things, mix things, and wave goodbye.

I SING THE BODY ELECTRIC 5 out of 5 stars.
39 of 42 people found this review helpful.

I'm constantly amazed by the consistently excellent educational book front-list from British publisher Dorling Kindersley. No other mass-market publisher comes close to producing non-fiction books of such quality, scope, sophistication, visual excitement and sheer readability. When DK Publishing tackles a subject, it's done right, typically by a hand-picked team of editorial professionals and topic experts, as is the case with their latest desk reference book, "DK Encyclopedia of the Human Body." Here a team of medical experts provided the massive data contained in the tome's 300-plus pages. Then a team of authors and editors groomed the text into DK's characteristic style by outlining subject heads and breaking down information into easily-digested sub-sections, each with a corresponding image. There are more than 900 full-color photographs, illustrations, charts and diagrams here, all mesmerizingly revealing the workings of the human body in painstaking detail. Instead of listing subjects alphabetically in the standard style of most encyclopedias, here it is organized into related subject groupings, working parts, moving framework, control and sensation, supply and maintenance, and so on, and designed in concert with DK's uniquely eye-popping visuals. Timelines, charts and illustrated histories help put subjects into perspective and tidbits on leeches, motion sickness, head lice, and toilets will get the attention of even the most reluctant readers. Page after page, the detailed subject is presented clearly and concisely in such a riveting way that young students ages eight and up will not only find and comprehend the information they're seeking, but will become so absorbed that they'll surprisingly discover themselves reading for the sheer fun of it. For high school students, the encyclopedia is a particularly distinct and pleasurable alternative to dull textbooks, making this a must-have for every student's complete home library.

Editorial Review:

A visually stimulating encyclopedia that explore and explains the workings of the human body. Providing comprehensive support for school children as well as a useful family guide for understanding how the body works, the Encyclopedia of the Human Body is a spectacular reference for young readers. Packed with bold illustrations and easy-to-follow text, the most difficult anatomical concepts, from skeletal and muscular systems to the digestive and reproductive organs, are now simple and easy to understand.

A great intro to hematology- for the early elementary crowd! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

As a college physiology professor and parent of two young children, I am very impressed with this book. It makes advanced physiological concepts readily accessible even to very young children. It covers some of the same concepts that I teach my college freshmen- platelet plugs, fibrin clot formation and retraction, the role of red blood cells in carrying oxygen, the role of white blood cells in fighting infection. I suspect that even some adults might learn something useful and interesting from this book. It never would have occurred to me to teach these difficult concepts to early elementary age children, but this book does a terrific job with it.
A natural intro to this topic is anytime a child falls and gets even a minor cut. I first read this book to my 5-year-old when he fell and injured his mouth and knee. It was so empowering for him to understand what was actually going on- why his cuts eventually stopped bleeding, how they turned into scabs, etc.
Highly recommended!

Editorial Review:

You've seen your own blood, when you have a cut or a scrape. You can see the veins in your wrist, and you've seen the scab that forms as a cut heals. But do you know what blood does for you? Without blood, you couldn't play, or grow, or learn. That's because just about every part of your body needs blood, from your muscles to your bones to your brain. How does your body use blood? Read and find out!

Durable Board Book with Cute Pictures 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

My first Spanish Body Board Book is a bilingual word book with English and Spanish
words and lots of fun colorful pictures. Many of the pages teach sentence like: "Puedo tocarme los pies" - "I can touch my toes."

Cute babies are found eating cookies, splashing in the bath, trying on hats and playing games. There is also a page of facial expressions, hair color and eye color.

A cute little book for parents who want to teach their children Spanish or English at an early age.

Another great bilingual book from DK publishing! 5 out of 5 stars.

When I ordered this book, I thought it would have the names of only the body parts--it is so much more than this. The sections in this little book include:
My Body
My Face
Eyes (with eye colors)
Hair (brown, curly, straight, etc.)
My Hands
My Legs and Feet
Baby Faces (with emotions like surprised and excited)
What can you do? (ex: sit, crawl, etc.)
I can (ex: touch my toes, etc.)
Senses: seeing, smelling, hearing, tasting, touching
Summer clothes
Winter clothes
What time is it? (time to drink milk, time for bed, etc.
Counting 1 to 5
Counting 1 to 10

This little book is packed with a lot of information! Great job DK!

Editorial Review:

Bilingual text throughout makes these Spanish and English books fun for baby and parent to read together, exploring simple language with each brightly colored spread.

Humorous Rhymes and lively colorful pictures 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

My son brought this book home from school today as reading homework (he's in second grade). This was one of those times when I was pleasantly surprised by a homework book being better than the usual. I like the humorous rhyming language, the entertaining and educational tone, and the pretty pictures. The illustrations are not scientific in detail, but there are many recognizable species and the book is laid out in an artistic manner all too often lost now that so much is done slip-slap on computers. I am glad to see that the book is still in print. It's a winner. Not much text per page, so very easy for many, but not a baby book either.

I admire this book. 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I think it's really great that Ruth Heller introduces a complex subject in a children's book without talking down to the children. It's great that she uses "big" words like "oviparous"--kids, after all, can remember lengthy dinosaur names; there's no reason why they can't handle other long scientific words.
But I do have slight qualms. For instance, the part about amphibians says that amphibians don't have claws--what about African clawed frogs?
The illustrations are engaging, and the use of rhyme in prose makes the text flow nicely. The subject is interesting, too. I just wonder a bit about the accuracy of the "facts" presented here.

Editorial Review:

"A highly original book, on the improbable subject of eggs . . . simple enough for three-year-olds, and complex enough for those considerably older."--The New Yorker. Full-color illustrations.
