A Must Read for Pre-Teen Girls 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is an outstanding book for pre-teen girls because it helps girls to feel confident in themselves. It gives helpful advice, and it covers everything that a young girl wants to know but may be embarrassed to ask. It allowed my two daughters to read about issues that are relevant to them, and then they felt comfortable talking to me. I highly recommend this book for moms and daughters alike.

Wonderful book for 9-11 year old girls! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is an excellent book for pre-teen girls who are just becoming aware of their body. It offers excellent advice on how to take care of their body and how to deal with changes that begin to happen. And best of all this information is presented in a very no-nonsense and friendly way that they can relate to at their age.

My 9 year old daughter simply loved this book. She read it from cover to cover in one sitting but keeps coming back and refering to it again and again. I wish I had read a book like this when I was a kid.

I also recommend the companion book The Feelings Book: The Care & Keeping of Your Emotions (American Girl). It seems kids today face more stresses than we did back in our day and books like the American Girl series really help supplement the talks you'll have with your child as a parent.

Editorial Review:

This bestselling guide answers all the questions growing girls have about their bodies - from hair care to healthy eating, bad breath to bra buying, pimples to periods. It offers guidance about basic hygiene and health without addressing issues of sexuality. Over 1 million copies sold!

Not To Sure About This Book 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Let me first mention that I am a huge fan of Karen Katz's books. However, this book was a big disappointment. Instead of teaching the child how to use the potty, the story contradicts using the potty. The child in the book spends most of the time rejecting the potty. This book basically confused my child and I stop reading it. The illustrations are great, but the story indicates that this particular child is not ready to use the potty. The lack of encouragement and motivation of potty training in this story is not great at all.

Editorial Review:

Mommy got me a brand new potty!

But I'm not ready yet!

I want to run and play.

Uh-oh, I peed in my pants.

But Mommy says, "That's okay!"

Children will love following along and lifting the flaps to see the child play, sit on thepotty, eat, sit on the potty, sleep, and then sit on the potty...until finally there is success.

Written from a child's point of view, this new potty-training book will help children join in the final refrain, "I'm so proud of me!"

3.5 Stars 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I should preface this by saying my sister is a recovering Meth and Heroin Addict. The stark contrast between what is available for treatment when you have parents with money and insurance is astounding but not surprising. I would have killed to have the resources to get my sister into the types of treatment that Nic had access to. In the end, it may or may not have made any difference because addiction is one of the few personal journeys that one takes with everyone they love in the front seat powerless to alter the direction.

Dealing with my sister's addiction and our addiction to her I truly believe that people will treat you as badly as you allow them and they will get away with what they can. I wonder if Nic always felt like he had a safety net knowing his parents had the insurance and financial means to afford his rehab once he had reached a bottom he was not comfortable with. Not saying this to minimize the complete and utter despondency that is synonymous with addiction but perhaps a different perspective when it comes to addiction and socioeconomic status.

Tweak begins at a fast and engaging pace for about the first 100 or so pages. During the first of Nic's description of his sobriety the book begins to lag and become repetitive and I start to wish there was a "Name-Dropper Anonymous" that Nic could attend and breathed a sigh of relief when his treatment facility suggested he spend the time not focusing on who he knows. During some points of the book he describes his situation with brutal honesty and at other points he glosses over situations that would have added an extra layer of depth and understanding to the book.

The lowest part of Nic's addiction appears to be at a point before his books started. I felt like to truly understand how low he had reached in his addiction it was important to read more about this period in his life as it affected him so greatly in the book and was only mentioned in an almost passing way. We read about the aftermath of his time as a prostitute but again the details of this time period were glossed over again lessening the impact of the book.

I was surprised to see who Nic decided to dedicate his book to. Perhaps, I am jaded after reading "Beautiful Boy" and dealing with the utter despair that a family member feels when an addict in the family is knocking on death's door with an uncontrolled and desperate vigor and you tying to do anything to slow their nose dive into hell and realizing there is nothing you can do but watch. The choice of dedication also left me with the feeling that we were missing more pieces of the puzzle to Nic's story.

I would absolutely recommend this book and his father's "Beautiful Boy" to anyone dealing with an addict in the family even with the books imperfections it is an insightful read and gives a sometimes powerful glimpse into the mind of addiction but also leaves a lot of unanswered holes and questions about Nic's life as an addict.

Editorial Review:

Nic Sheff was drunk for the first time at age eleven. In the years that followed, he would regularly smoke pot, do cocaine and Ecstasy, and develop addictions to crystal meth and heroin. Even so, he felt like he would always be able to quit and put his life together whenever he needed to. It took a violent relapse one summer in California to convince him otherwise. In a voice that is raw and honest, Nic spares no detail in telling us the compelling, heartbreaking, and true story of his relapse and the road to recovery. As we watch Nic plunge the mental and physical depths of drug addiction, he paints a picture for us of a person at odds with his past, with his family, with his substances, and with himself. It's a harrowing portrait -- but not one without hope.

Too Big for Diapers (Too Big Board Books)

Ok book but could be more detailed-my grandson has very good comprehension and seemed bored with the book very quickly.

Great book! 4 out of 5 stars.

My daughter loves Ernie. I got her this book and she loves sitting on the potty reading it over and over. Now she doesn't want to stop reading it even when she gets done going potty!

Potty Training Fun 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is a must along with Elmo's potty video. They work together and my 2 year old loves them both.

Good book, not great 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I've purchased a lot of potty books and this one is just ok. My daughter enjoys the pictures. There's not much to read (which can be good), but the phrasing is a little...I'm not sure of the right word, maybe just different. I kind of throw in my own words on each page and my daughter seems to enjoy my version.

My daughter has two other potty books she likes better: Tinkle, Tinkle, Little Tot and The Potty Book for Girls. Hope my review helps.

Great book- Real life. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I have read mostly positive reviews about this book and I agree. We used this book for my daughter's Kindergarten body project when she wanted to know about where babies come from and I had no problem reading it to a 5 year old and a 7 year old, mixed genders.

Though I know some have suggested that there is a political agenda in the book regarding abortion and homosexuality, I feel this book is unbiased and promotes proper family values for the following reasons:

1. There is a focus on the love aspect of relationships along with the physical aspects of sex and reproduction. There is no way a child will walk away from this book thinking sex is appropriate between strangers. It is clear, from the writing, that this is something to share within a serious relationship.

2. There is a mention of homosexuality. It is very brief. It does not encourage homosexuality and more than it discourages homosexuality. It does not go into graphic detail of how two men or two women have intercourse. It simply points that some people in same sex relationships have children together. This is fact and is stated as such.

3. Abortion is not glorified. It is mentioned that some people end their pregnancies through abortion. Again, this is stated as fact- not glorified or demonized. It is reality and is mentioned as such.

4. There is also a part that describes sexual abuse. It is very sensitive and is written to encourage children to seek out help if they are in a bad situation.

These are difficult, often controversial, issues. They are handled with loving care by the authors. Two thumbs up!

Editorial Review:

"An outstanding book. . . . Meets the needs of those in-between or curious kids who are not ready, developmentally or emotionally, for IT'S PERFECTLY NORMAL." — BOOKLIST (starred review)

How does a baby begin? What makes a baby male or female? How is a baby born? Children have plenty of questions about reproduction and babies — and about sex and sexuality, too. IT'S SO AMAZING! provides the answers — with fun, accurate, comic-book-style artwork and a clear, lively text that reflects elementary-school children's interest in how things work, while giving them a healthy understanding of their bodies. Created by the author and illustrator of IT'S PERFECTLY NORMAL, this forthright and funny book — newly updated for its fifth anniversary — covers similar territory but with an eye toward younger children's concerns.

One of the best books ever for potty time (and for today's politics) 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Although ostensibly written to teach small children a basic lifeskill, this is also a fine book to teach Republicans some basic conservative principles.

It begins by explaining how, when Michael's diaper is wet or dirty, "he tells mommy or daddy. Then they put a new diaper on, and Michael is clean and dry again." Now, think Presidential and how voters will replace "Diaper George" with either Barack or John.

After Michael's parents bring home a potty, George (I mean Michael) does the obvious; he sits on it, fully clothed. Then he sits his Teddy Bear on it, 'cause he likes Teddy (Roosevelt). Sounds like Michael (I mean George) needs some on-the-potty (I mean on-the-job) training ... or at least to listen to his Daddy.

The book is a beautiful, sensitive and helpful guide to training a young child in one of the basics of life. It's written in language simple and clear enough for any Republican (I mean parent) to understand in teaching the basics of what's important.

It took Michael (George) some time. "Michael sat and sat. This time something happened. Mommy and Daddy and Michael looked in the potty. They saw pee and poop." Sounds like what prosecutors saw in the Abramoff lobbying scandal, doesn't it? Of course, cleaning up pee and poop is a lot easier than cleaning up Washington.

Consider the following sequence: "One day Michael forgot to use his potty. His pants got wet. The floor got wet, too." During Hurricane Katrina a lot of pants and floors got wet. Remember, "Brownie, you're doing a heck of a job"?

Please, don't let the political similarities deter you from buying this book. It deserves the high ratings others give it. What's more, when your child is properly potty trained, pass it along to some Republican to help them start over again from the basics.

They may need it more than your child. Just look at the mess they've made. Don't you wish someone had read it to George when it was published in 2000?

Editorial Review:

"What a big boy you are!"

Potty training can be fun. With warmth and sensitivity, Joanna Cole and Maxie Chambliss guide young boys though the challenges and rewards potty training—from the first steps to the joy of graduating to big boy underpants! A helpful "Note to parents" is included.

Boy's Guide to Becoming a Teen 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book for my 10 year old. I was very pleased with the way it explained things. I read the book to him and answered any questions that he had as we went along. He did not have very many, because it was explained very well. However, there is a part in the book I did not read to him, which is the reason why I did not let him read the book by himself. The part touches on sex, which I don't have a problem with except for the fact that it explained oral and anal sex, and I don't feel like a 10 year old should know about things like that.

Favorite potty training book! 5 out of 5 stars.

I recently ordered several potty training books for my 22-month old daughter. This is by far her favorite! The rhyming quality of the book and the pictures are great. She loves the story so much she can almost recite it herself as we read!

Editorial Review:

Every little girl's graduation from diapers to the potty is always a very important moment—and one to make both parents and toddlers proud! In The Potty Book, Hannah needs to have her diapers changed so she can go out and play. Then mom and dad bring home a big box, and Hannah is anxious to open it up and see what's inside. Is it a rocking chair? A bed for Teddy? No, it's a potty—which means that it's time for Hannah to graduate from her diapers. This gentle and humorous little story is charmingly illustrated and told in verse. Little girls will enjoy looking at the pictures and having the story read to them. Meanwhile, they'll start getting the idea that it's time for them to grow up, exactly like Hannah. So that at last, they'll be able to say—"I'm off the potty!"

Well worth the price! 5 out of 5 stars.

This has been a great book for my 13 year old son, who has OCD, along with autism. There is a very helpful analogy comparing dealing with obsessive thoughts with entering a movie theater--just like sometimes at first the theater's air conditioning is too cold or the sound is too loud, after a while, we get used to it. In the same way, if the child waits out the anxious thought, it too will go away, as he "gets used to it". I don't often write reviews, but this book was so helpful that I wanted to make sure I recommended it to those who have children struggling with OCD.

Editorial Review:

What To Do When Your Brain Gets Stuck guides children and their parents through the cognitive-behavioral techniques used to treat Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Revealing OCD in a whole new light, this interactive self-help book turns kids into super-sleuths who can recognize OCD's tricks. Engaging examples, activities, and step-by-step instructions help children master the skills needed to break free from the sticky thoughts and urges of OCD, and live happier lives. This is the complete resource foreducating, motivating, and empowering children to work toward change.

My 2 year old daughter loves this book! We just got it at the library and we read it over and over again! It presents a very real situation- the kiddo who doesn't want to go shopping with mama- for kids and parents and provides a happy solution/ending. Not only is the rhyming fun and the pictures great but both my daughter and I connect with the story!

Editorial Review:

Yucky music, great big feet.

Ladies smelling way too sweet.

Look at knees and stand in line.

Llama Llama starts to whine.

Does any child like to go shopping? Not Llama Llama! But Mama can’t leave Llama at home, so off they go to Shop-O-Rama. Lots of aisles. Long lines. Mama is too busy to notice that Llama Llama is getting m-a-d! And before he knows it, he’s having a full-out tantrum! Mama quickly calms him down, but she also realizes that they need to make shopping more fun for both of them. Parents and children are sure to recognize themselves in this fun-to-read follow-up to the popular Llama Llama Red Pajama.
