"Rose for Melinda"
By:Amanda Heyse

Do you enjoy reading books about love and friendship? If you do, "A Rose for Melinda" is a "must read" for you. So, grab a blanket, make your self some hot chocolate, snuggle up on the couch, and enjoy!

"A Rose for Melinda" is a story about friendship and eternal love. Melinda Skye and Jesse Rose have been best friends since kindergarten. But when Jesse's mother and father get divorced Jesse has to leave Melinda and move to California. However, Jesse and Melinda stay in touch for many years. When Melinda becomes diagnosed with leukemia her dreams of becoming a famous ballerina may not work out. During this time everyone in Melinda's family supports her, even Jesse and her friend Bailey.

I would recommend this book to all teenage girls. It is a story about friendship and courage. The importance of true friendship is shown throughout the book. The main character shows her courage by continuing to follow her dream of being a dancer despite her illness.

Editorial Review:

Told in letters, journal entries, e-mails, doctors’ reports, and instant messages, the heartbreaking story of an aspiring ballet dancer battling leukemia.

Cheap print job 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is an example of the difficulties of shopping online.
I had read the book several years ago and wanted to give a volume as a gift. This printing is unacceptable - unpleasant font, cramped pages and flimsy binding. You will do better with the purchase of a used hardcover volume

Poor Printing 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The company's service was good, but the book itself was full of printing errors. A large speech was absent at the end, and I caught that only because I'd looked it up; the ending made no sense without it. There was also computer code on the pages here and there in the middle of text. I definitely don't recommend this publisher's version of the book.

A bit dated with time 3 out of 5 stars.

Little Lord Fauntleroy is the fable of a young boy (Cedric) who is nothing short of saintly. His arrival in England as a new lord replacing his grandfather casts off the contrast of dark and light. The Earl is nothing short of a brute. Cedric is a saint. Cedric's charm, handsome looks and demeanor evolve the Uncle into a saint himself. That's the story. There really isn't a plot or some great cause and effect drama. The author's gift is the ability to tell a fable -- good can conquer evil.
The problem with Little Lord Fauntleroy is of course it's dated. Since contemporary themes were inserted into the tale and contemporary characters were inserted (unlike Secret Garden or Little Princess) that really crunches teeth together. Were this book published today as-is civil rights groups would be up in arms and I wouldn't blame them. Francis doesn't have King's English speak and some of the characters speak with their accent making it hard to understand.
Many have called the book sentimental and I didn't feel that. Too many stereotypes and too many shallow characters with not enough flavor made the book flat.
On the positive end the language is richer than expected and I liked that insertion and even politics and class warfare get the light of day.
Personally I liked the later reads better than this one.

Editorial Review:

Few 7-year-old boys can have been whisked away from the New York streets to the English countryside and told they are to inherit a fortune. Few can have had to face quite such a crotchety and selfish old grandfather. But then little Lord Fauntleroy is a special kind of boy in so many ways.

Bright and cheery for very young readers 4 out of 5 stars.
34 of 34 people found this review helpful.

This book is about a boy who goes into the hospital for a one night stay after an ear operation. The pictures and words are bright, cheery and comforting to young readers. My daughter liked to read this book even after her hospital stay. It was written in England so it shows hospital scenes (like children in group wards) which didn't apply to my daughters stay. I pointed out differences between what would and did happen to her. A good book to show a very young child what going to the hospital will be like and that it isn't as scary as it might seem.

A MUST-HAVE if your child to going to the hospital 5 out of 5 stars.

When my son was going to have tubes put in his ears and his Adnoids removed, we purchased this book. He was just barely 3 years old, but this book explained on HIS level everything that was going to happen to him (from the little boy's ear first hurting, to everything that happens at the hospital before and after the surgery).

We took the book to the hospital and he pointed out to me where in the book it showed each step as they happened to him (ex. nurse taking his temperature). The book did this so well, and my son was so calm, the doctor decided he didn't need to give him the normal shot of something to calm him down. They just carried him down to surgery.

He just turned 4 and we are having to remove his tonsils this next month. He is reading the book again and loving it. Even though the procedure is not the exact same as the one the little boy in the book has, it has been very easy to replace ear ache with sore throat. EXCELLENT BOOK

PPFFFOOOTTT! 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Farley has been farting. He farts at home, he farts at school, he farts in the pond. "It was like a jacuzzi!" But mother frog is worried and sends him to the doctor. The doctor says, "'It will pass.' Unfortunately, it KEPT passing." As Farley's gas builds, he gets bigger and bigger--too big for his clothes and eventually too big for the door. One day, Farley has stored up so much gas that he floats away into the sky. His father comes up with a solution worthy of Grandpa Joe: "'Fart, Farley, just as loud as you can!' But Farley couldn't hear him. 'What, Dad?' 'PPFFFOOOTTT!' everyone shouted." So Farley farts, drifts back down and celebrates with bean soup...but this time Farley's not the one who farts!

Gross bodily humor is captured here in a story that's almost too cute for it. I love her painting style--acrylics scrubbed over in layers with a faint similarity to David Shannon's. Perhaps with a little more of Shannon's naughty wit, this story would "rise" to the occasion.

Editorial Review:

Farley the frog can't stop farting. The doctor says it's only gas and it will pass. The trouble is, it does! Comic pictures and a tongue-in-cheek text relate how Farley and his family learn that it's better to fart and bear the shame than not to fart and bear the pain!

The Best Elmo Book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is my Baby Daughter's absolute favorite book. I bought it when she was five months old, because she had the Chicken Elmo toy that she really liked. She just loves this book. She's eight months old and it's really the only book that captures her full attention. (The Hungry Caterpillar comes in second.) We've tried buying other Elmo books, but she's just not as interested in them.

My 19 month old daughter LOVES this book. It's been her favorite for several weeks and I'm not tired of reading it either! I chose it because I heard them read it to her daycare class and all the kids loved it!!

Love this book! 5 out of 5 stars.

My 3 year old loves this book. It's my favorite too. It's so easy for my son to remember the words because of the rhyme plus the illustration shows him what happens when Elmo says "Achoo!". My son loves saying the "Achoo!" part everytime we read it and we giggle everytime. It's a fun book to read. I highly recommend it.

Editorial Review:

Elmo's bringing a present to Oscar. But the mysterious wrapped gift has a curious effect--it's making Elmo sneeze! And every time Elmo sneezes, something funny happens. The youngest readers will love following along as Elmo's sneezes cause laundry to fall off a line and much more in this Early Step into Reading™ story

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good cry. Any girl from the ages of 12-112 would like this book. There is a warning to this book if you have a soft heart have o tissue box handy you will cry. You may cry and you may cheer but you will not know what is going to happen next; this author is always throwing curve balls at you so be prepared. What makes this book such a topper is it makes you think about what you have and what you might do if you where to loose all abilities except thinking. It makes you wonder if you could count on your friends and family to help you every minute of every day. It makes you feel even lucky that you can do the simplest tasks without thinking and not having to have special care. well at least it did for me. So if you like a page turner and a good cry this book is for you.

Editorial Review:

Dawn Rochelle looks like any other 17year-old girt, but looks can be deceiving. At the age of 13, Dawn was diagnosed with leukemia. Now almost five years into remission, Dawn's a senior in high school and looking forward to going to college. But her plans are disrupted when she suffers another medical crisis that causes partial paralysis. The doctors are optimistic about her recovery, but Dawn finds herself giving in to despair. At least during remission she could try to forget about her cancer and pretend she was a normal girl. But the effects of the paralysis are impossible to hide from her friends and the boy she cares about. Dawn had thought her bad times were over. Will she be able to find the strength and courage to live again?

Cute book. Good for inclusion classes. 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a fictional story about a girl named Angel and her friendship with Sam, a classmate who has Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Angel explains how Sam thinks and behaves in school and at home. She describes characteristics, such as sensory differences, repetition, and communication difficulties. Written in very positive language, this book also includes tips for teachers.

Editorial Review:

These beautifully illustrated and fun-to-read storybooks simplify and normalize complicated childhood conditions, like autism. When read aloud, other children can identify why a peer may be treated differently and begin to empathize with them. In addition, children whose conditions set them apart as being different begin to feel accepted and safe. Each book includes a Kids' Quiz to reinforce new information and Ten Tips for Teachers to provide additional facts and ideas for teacher use. This book educates children about autism, a complex and often misunderstood condition. The story describes what life is like for a child with autism.

This was one of my kid's favorites! (and mine) 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is not for uptight parents. The lessons are presented with humor and are a bit gross, which is why KIDS love it. The book is informal and silly and an enjoyable read for everyone. (As a matter of fact, all Babette Cole's books are delightful)

Fun book 5 out of 5 stars.

It may not be for the puritanical but is a typical English childrens book. It pulls no punches and does it in a very funny way. Babette Cole books are all very up front but fun to read. I have yet to read it to a child who didn't break up from Grampa exploding and blowing the roof off when he went to the bathroom.

I'd give this book 10 stars 5 out of 5 stars.

Hands down, this is my son's favorite book. It's humor is raucous and you'll laugh at every page.

Funny for adults as well as little ones. Highly recommend! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a favorite of my two children! They love the funny illustrations and are interested in the descriptions of all the various Gumboyle's ailments. This is a great book for all the four year olds in your life. We have given this as a gift many many times and it is always a hit. Parents might be a little off put by the page with Kevin smoking in the garage or the eggs under the fingernails of the Gumboyle who scratched his bum... but the message about hygiene and bad habits gets across with humor that kids love. Since the first time my children read this they have been compulsive about washing their hands after using the bathroom. It's amazing but Dr. Dog's wisdom got through to them! By far Ms. Cole's best book...

Editorial Review:

Dr. dog is not your usual doctor. For one thing, he makes house calls. For another, he's a pet beagle! When his entire family falls sick, only Dr. Dog can save the day, with cure for head lice, pinworms, and (yikes!) even a case of too much gas...

Kim’s World Turns Upside Down

When Kim’s mom is diagnosed with cancer, Natalie steps in, as true friends will do, to round up hundreds of people to pray for Mrs. Peterson’s healing. Her health begins to improve, and Kim’s love life begins to flourish…but with a non-Christian. Natalie warns Kim to break off the relationship, but is that just because she’s jealous? Or is God trying to speak to Kim through Natalie’s counsel? When her mom’s health suddenly declines again, Kim blames herself. Maybe she never should have become involved with Matthew, especially as she’s tempted to give in to his pressure to have sex. Kim’s faith is hanging in the balance. She wants to believe that prayer will prevail, but the obstacles seem so big…

Thursday, December 29

My dad and I are both feeling a little torn about Mom right now. On one hand, we all act like everything is just peachy, perfectly normal. But at the same time, it’s like we’re walking on eggshells too. Like we’re all thinking the same thing—is this our last Christmas all together?

Kim Peterson’s mom has stage four ovarian cancer, and Kim’s done enough research online to know the odds are dismal. But Kim and her best friend, Natalie McCabe, and a lot of other people are praying that God will heal her mom.

Kim’s mom makes her promise that she’ll continue with life as normal: Nat, youth group, violin, her Just Ask Jamie newspaper column, even hanging out with Matthew. But how can life be normal with cancer hanging over your head like a dark cloud?

And then she’s getting flak from Natalie because Matthew’s not a Christian, and Nat’s afraid he’ll drag Kim down. But Nat’s dating life isn’t exactly smooth sailing, either. Both girls are praying a lot—and waiting to find out what’s meant to be.

Reader’s guide included

Story Behind the Book

“My teenage years remain vivid in my mind. It was a turbulent time, full of sharp contrasts—love and hate, pain and pleasure, trust and doubt. Then, just as I reached my peak of questioning, rebelling, and seeking, I found God. And I found Him in a really big way! My life turned completely around and has, thankfully, never turned back. Hopefully this story will touch and change hearts—speaking to teen girls right where they live, reminding readers that God is alive and well and ready to be intimately involved in their lives right now!” —Melody Carlson
