Editorial Review:

Alexei Romanov, heir to the Russian throne, is in deadly danger.

It¹s 1916, the struggling Russian people are tired of war and are blaming their Romanov rulers for it, and some are secretly plotting to murder the young heir and his family. But nobody outside the palace knows that Alexei suffers from a terrible bleeding disease, hemophilia, which threatens to finish him off even before the family¹s enemies can. The only person able to help Alexei is the evil and powerful religious mystic Rasputin -- and now Rasputin is trying to kill him too! Desperate, Alexei flees through time to New York City in 2010, using a method taught to him by the mad monk himself.

In New York, Alexei meets smart and sassy Varda Rosenberg, and discovers she is a distant cousin. Varda is working on a gene therapy cure for hemophilia, as the disease still runs in the family. When Alexei learns that history shows that his entire family will be assassinated in 1918, he and Varda travel back in time to the Russian Revolution, with Rasputin hot on their heels. Will they be able to rescue Alexei¹s family before it¹s too late?

Staton Rabin lets Alexei tell his own riveting story in a rousing adventure with stunning surprises -- a movingly authentic look at royalty and revolution in the days of the tsars.

Another Dora book to help with tough situations 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Personally, I'm not a huge Dora fan, but my daughter is, so I'm looking past the fact that it's Dora to review it.

We've had Dora goes to the dentist for awhile now, and it was really helpful when we went to the dentist the last time, so I figured this would be a good addition to our Dora library, and I was right.

Like in the dentist book, Dora introduces several of the doctor's tools (stethoscope, otoscope, reflex hammer, etc.) to the reader, as well as showing the nurse and waiting room.

Anything to help my child calm down at the doctor's office is great, and when she knows what things are, sometimes she's just calmer overall. We'll have to see at the next visit if it really worked, but at least she knows now what the otoscope is.

Editorial Review:

Dora and her Mami are going to the doctor for a check-up. The doctor listens to her heartbeat, weighs and measures her and looks in her eyes, ears and throat. At the end, Dora gets a special treat from the doctor. This first experience 8 x 8 story is sure to be a hit with Dora fans who may feel a little nervous about going to the doctor.

A wonderful book for helping your young child 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Such a wonderful book! It comes at a time for our family when Grandma's health is declining. For our daughter who is nearly three, Grandma seems a bit scary, since she doesn't look and act quite like herself. When we visit Grandma, she tends to moan a bit, which is very frightening to our toddler.

This beautiful story is about a boy named Bobby and his Grandfather, Bob, who lives with Bobby and his parents. They have a lovely relationship; they spend lots of time together, building with blocks and sharing stories. Bobby especially likes for Bob to tell him the story about how Bobby learned to walk... ''Now one foot, now the other.''

When Bobby is 5 years old, Bob has a stroke, and the little boy is frightened by the changes in his grandfather. Once Bob finally gets home from the hospital, he doesn't seem to recognize Bobby. The first sound Bob tries to make ''sounds like a monster'' to Bobby, but Bobby learns to understand Bob and, through love and persistence, is instrumental in Bob's recovery.

I'm sure that this book will help my daughter to understand why Grandma isn't quite herself. Hopefully, our visits to see Grandma will be less stressful for her (and for me). After reading this story to my toddler at least dozen times (we received this book in the mail just three days ago), I can finally keep from tearing up until the very last page. I highly recommend this lovely book!

Editorial Review:

This touching story about a young boy coping with his grandfather’s disability has long been one of Tomie dePaola’s most popular picture books. Now, for the first time, it is available in a larger format, full-color edition—perfect for family sharing. Readers of all ages will love to watch Grandpa Bob teach Bobby to walk, and how Bobby returns the favor when Bob has a stroke, all in beautifully rich full color.

Perfect to overcome your kids fear of the doctor! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

My little 2 1/2 year old always cried and screamed when he would go to the doctor. Before his next appointment, we got this book and it made a huge difference. Everytime the doctor would check him, he would say "like Corduroy Daddy?" I would say yes and he would let the doctor do what she needed to do. This book is very cute and works very well.

Charmless, but potentially useful 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

It makes me a little sad to see how far Corduroy has fallen from those first amazing books... The illustrations are generic and kind of cheesy, and the text is pretty thoughtless -- when Corduroy gets weighed his doctor notes that he has "...gained a lot of pounds; too many cookies Corduroy," with the little bear looking downcast as he stands mostly naked on the scale. Let's hope our pediatricians treat weight issues with a little more sensitivity. Still, I'm forced to give this book 3 stars for the reasons the other reviewers stated: it gives a decent overview of what to expect at the doctor's, from getting undressed to getting a shot.

Editorial Review:

The youngest fans of Corduroy, one of the best-loved children's book characters for over forty years, will delight in these simple, sturdy board books-now available in a larger size with an updated, modern look.
In Corduroy Goes to the Doctor, Corduroy gets a check-up.

anonymous 7 yr old 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I gave the author 5 stars because the story was really good. It is about a boy that lost his tooth one night and he got a quarter from the tooth fairy. He didn't know what to spend it on. He changed his mind on lots of stuff

Editorial Review:

Looking forward to spending the quarter he received from the Tooth Fairy, a young boy adds up all the different things he can buy for twenty-five cents and gets so confused that he decides to buy his tooth back.

Keeping it simple 5 out of 5 stars.
19 of 20 people found this review helpful.

How do you go about explaining something to your children that you have difficulty understanding yourself? Well Barklay and Eve make the process easier. This wonderful book describes the most complicated procedures in simple terms without talking down to children. I found the illustrations and story content charming and informative. Children will find the common hair loss of cancer a much less frightening process when they see the fun that Eve has with a wig. While dealing with cancer can't be made easier, Barklay and Eve can make explaining it easier.

Editorial Review:

What IS Cancer, Anyway? Explaining Cancer to Children of All Ages is one of the books in the Barklay and Eve Children's Book Series. This book provides basic information that is essential when someone in the family has cancer and does so in a calm, clear, reassuring manner that children and adults will appreciate. Barklay and Eve, the two lovable main characters, define cancer, explain radiation and chemotherapy (including the reasons why some people loose their hair). This is a hopeful story which has a fun connect-the -dots page of the American Cancer Sociey's symbol of hope. THIS BOOK IS ENDORSED BY HURRICANE VOICES, A BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION.

Great book on preventing Germ Transmission 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Simple and to the point. Great book for the very young child on what to do when you sneeze, blow your nose, etc. It isn't a book about "just washing hands", it covers more than washing hands and opens up the opportunity to discuss when and where we find germs. Wonderful illustrations - bright and colorful.

Wow! It's great. 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book for my 2 1/2 year old and it quickly became his favorite book.

Now when it's time to wash his hands he tells me! He is always telling me "Germs are not for sharing." He also asks me for a tissue when he needs one and has stopped eating food that has hit the floor.

I think the charm of this book is the fact that it uses words like Achoo, Cough, Gurgle, Flush -- that I can say in a way that really gets his attention.

2 Thumbs up!

Editorial Review:

Sneezes, coughs, runny noses, spills, and messes are facts of everyday life with children. And that's why it's never too soon to teach little ones about germs and ways to stay clean and healthy. This book is a short course for kids on what germs are, what they do, and why it's so important to cover them up, block them from spreading, and wash them down the drain. Simple words complement warm, inviting, full colour illustrations that show real-life situations kids can relate to. A special section includes tips and ideas for discussion and activities with parents and caregivers (pb edition only).

Editorial Review:

The landmark novel about anorexia nervosa--now with an autobiographical afterword by the author

Leslie Hiller is a bright, attractive, talented teenager who leads a privileged life in New York City. She is also a perfectionist. When Leslie starts to diet, she finds herself becoming obsessed, getting thinner and thinner, until she is forced to realize that her quest for perfection is killing her.

First published in 1981, this groundbreaking novel has been lauded by countless librarians, educators, and teenaged readers. This new edition features an afterword by the author in which she discusses her own struggle with the disease, the difficult road toward recovery, and the lasting effects on her life.

"The best book yet on anorexia nervosa. And the only one in which what's compelling is not the heroine's physical condition, it's the heroine herself." --School Library Journal, starred review

"This is a powerful book--one in which there are no villains--about a family whose members are beset by a problem they are struggling to understand." --Baltimore Sun

This is an outstanding book. Very contemporary and the students who have read it with me highly recommend it. The references are current and the topic is very real. I would recommend this to any high school student and to all health classes!

Editorial Review:

Walking around New York City was what Mitty Blake did best. He loved the city, and even after 9/11, he always felt safe. Mitty was a carefree guy–he didn’t worry about terrorists or blackouts or grades or anything, which is why he was late getting started on his Advanced Bio report.
Mitty does feel a little pressure to hand something in–if he doesn’t, he’ll be switched out of Advanced Bio, which would be unfortunate since Olivia’s in Advanced Bio. So he considers it good luck when he finds some old medical books in his family’s weekend house that focus on something he could write about. But when he discovers an old envelope with two scabs in one of the books, the report is no longer about the grade–it’s about life and death. His own.
This edge-of-your-seat thriller will leave you breathless.
