"Blue Wanted Her Snack to be Really Special" 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Her teacher, Miss Marigold, has assigned everyone in the class to bring a snack for "Healthy Snacks Day." There are no special qualifications, other than that it it has to be healthy. Blue's friends all seem to know exactly what to bring, but Blue isn't so sure.

Blue thinks about the problem and gets help from Mr. Salt and Mrs. Pepper. Together, they work together to create a wonderful healthy snack. Blue also learns a little something about trying new foods.

This is book #22 in the "Blue's Clues" series. It features an illustrated version of Joe, unlike some of the books which contain photographs of Donovan Patton as him. This book is pretty fun. You get to see Joe and Blue in chef's hats and it teaches a number of things related to healthy eating and cooking, as well as problem-solving.

Editorial Review:

It's Healthy Snack Day in Miss Marigold's class! Blue and her friends each need to choose a healthy snack to share. What snack will Blue bring? Read and find out!

Read Blue's Sniffly Day, Mom! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

My son *loves* this book!

Steve wants to see if Blue would like to come out and play, but Blue is still feeling under the weather. Nurse Shovel and Dr. Pail open up their pretend doctor bag, but they soon realize that this isn't going to help Blue feel better.

Mr. Salt and Mrs. Pepper get in on the action by offering to make Blue chicken soup. This story is interactive in that the child is asked to interpret the recipe card, point out what ingredients are needed, find the biggest bowl on the page, locate the orange cup, etc.

This is a brief book, but long enough to satisfy a child's desire for a bedtime story (without wearing Mom or Dad out!), as well as providing learning opportunities as Steve and the gang try to help Blue feel better.

Editorial Review:

Oh, no! Blue has the sniffles! Will a visit from Dr. Pail and Nurse Shovel cure her cold? How about a bowl of Mr. Salt and Mrs. Pepper's homemade soup? Come help Steve and all of Blue's friends find ways to make her feel better.

My family LOVES this book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

My daughter and I fell in love with Peaceful Piggy Meditation and bought an extra copy for my nephew who lives a rather high-powered life for a four year old. So when I saw this book I didn't hesitate to purchase since I figured it would nurture my daughter's budding interest in yoga. It has certainly done that--we use it often. It's an excellent introduction to yoga for children--the best I've seen so far. My husband, a novice yogi, even finds the poses in the book "just right" for his level of comfort and expertise. Definitely a favorite in our house. We love the Peaceful Piggies!

Editorial Review:

(Ages: 6-9) Who loves yoga? Everyone from ballerinas to football players to moms and dads. Babies do yoga positions without even knowing it! From the author and illustrator of Peaceful Piggy Meditation, this fun and informative picture book guide shows kids-and piggies!-in classic yoga poses, complete with instructions.

Kerry Lee MacLean brings her experience as a yoga instructor and children's meditation therapist to this unique guide, along with the bright, amusing piggy paintings that have become her trademark.

Editorial Review:

Despite recent media attention, obsessive-compulsive disorder remains perplexing to those who haven't experienced the illness firsthand. In her compassionate debut novel, Terry Spencer Hesser skillfully and credibly explains exactly what OCD feels like, as well as the effects it has on surrounding friends and family. Tara Sullivan first encounters her compulsive behavior at age 11, when she hears of the sidewalk game "Step on a crack, break your mother's back." Most people have had the experience of toying with this rhyme, but for Tara, it becomes something worse: "I couldn't not think the thoughts. And I couldn't not count the cracks." In one of several compulsive rituals, she must count every sidewalk crack between her house and school. If she is ever interrupted or loses her place, she must run back to the beginning and start over, or her mother's spinal health will be endangered. She recognizes this as absurd behavior, and gets absolutely no pleasure from the exercise, yet nonetheless feels inexplicably compelled to perform it.

Hesser traces the arc of Tara's illness through several misdiagnoses, the expansion of her compulsive behaviors (obsessive prayer rituals and the need to touch the doorknob then kiss her fingers 33 times before leaving the house), and the reactions of her loved ones. Tara's sister responds by beating up anyone who makes fun of the compulsions, her anguished mother's answer is increasing violence toward her daughter, and friends alternate between acceptance and frustration. Deftly illustrating the depth of Tara's strained relationships, Hesser also addresses anorexia, shoplifting, drug use, and unsafe sex, subtly reinforcing the idea that these behaviors--though perhaps compulsions as well--are different from OCD in that they inspire some measure of enjoyment for the participant. Nominated by the Young Adult Library Services Association as one of 1998's Best Books for Young Adults, Kissing Doorknobs addresses a cutting-edge issue with grace, humor, and insight. While the novel refuses to make false promises, it provides an inspiring message of hope. (Ages 12 and older) --Brangien Davis

knees & elbows & necks, oh my! 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Immediate, poetic & bright this big book brings you up close & personal with children's feet, hands, eyes, backs, hair, elbows in award-winning Wendy Ewald's magical photos.

The poems penned by these 15 youngsters are funny & eloquent, touching & proud. As is usual with children, it's more about what they don't say as much as it is about what they do.

Bound to get kids thinking about what they like about their bodies, might even get them writing little ditties about it too! A must in a classroom or school library!

The poems & black & white photos in THE BEST PART OF ME are drawn from Literacy Through Photography, a program Wendy Ewald originated in the public schools of Durham, North Carolina.

Editorial Review:

Wendy Ewald asked children a compelling question-What is the best part of you? The resulting book captures children's thoughts about their bodies in striking photographs and disarmingly honest words. Sometimes funny, sometimes moving, always provocative, The Best Part of Me is a distinguished, deeply personal book that is sure to be welcomed by teachers and parents looking for creative ways to discuss body image, self-esteem, and diversity and children.

Love this book, & takes fear away from doctor visits 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

My 18-month old loves this book, reads it over and over, and now puts her head to my chest to hear my heart and says "thump thump". We have fun playing through each of the things that the doctor is doing to Elmo: checking his ears, mouth, tummy, back, heart, he gets weighed and measured for height, and at the end he gets a shot...Elmo points to his arm and says "it went right here, It felt like a little pinch, that's all." There's a corresponding Elmo doll which we haven't tried yet but will.

Worth the read 4 out of 5 stars.

My daughter is scared of the Dr's office so I purchased this book to hopefully calm her fears. She loves Elmo and the book managed to keep her attention almost the entire way through.

The Best Elmo Book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is my Baby Daughter's absolute favorite book. I bought it when she was five months old, because she had the Chicken Elmo toy that she really liked. She just loves this book. She's eight months old and it's really the only book that captures her full attention. (The Hungry Caterpillar comes in second.) We've tried buying other Elmo books, but she's just not as interested in them.

My 19 month old daughter LOVES this book. It's been her favorite for several weeks and I'm not tired of reading it either! I chose it because I heard them read it to her daycare class and all the kids loved it!!

Love this book! 5 out of 5 stars.

My 3 year old loves this book. It's my favorite too. It's so easy for my son to remember the words because of the rhyme plus the illustration shows him what happens when Elmo says "Achoo!". My son loves saying the "Achoo!" part everytime we read it and we giggle everytime. It's a fun book to read. I highly recommend it.

Editorial Review:

Elmo's bringing a present to Oscar. But the mysterious wrapped gift has a curious effect--it's making Elmo sneeze! And every time Elmo sneezes, something funny happens. The youngest readers will love following along as Elmo's sneezes cause laundry to fall off a line and much more in this Early Step into Reading™ story

A great series built on loveable characters 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

My daughter who is now 8 and I have been reading the Mr Putter and Tabby stories from the very beginning when Mr Putter and Tabby poured the tea. In fact, she has learned to read thanks to this kind hearted old man and his "fine cat." This latest addition as the two of them deal with a common cold is uncommonly good. Cynthia Rylant has managed to convey the lives of two elderly people - Mr Putter and his neighbor, Mrs Teaberry - with dignity, humor and a sense of adventure in everyday living. My daughter loves this story and all the others because of the humorous situations and the likeability of the characters. I love them because as I approach my "Mr Putter years" -- I'm 56 -- I see him as a delightful example of what being an "old man" can be. Likewise I see my daughter learning compassion, acceptance and respect for older people so often missing in children's stories.

I urge any parent -- and especially grandparents -- to add this book and any of the other Mr Putter and Tabby books to their children's (and grandchildren's)reading repetoire.

Editorial Review:

Even though Tabby tries to keep him warm, Mr. Putter catches a cold in this cozy addition to the series.
