No More Fear of the Doctor 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Our son was terrified of the doctor's office-total melt down everytime. He loved Blue's Clues, so when we saw this book, we bought it and started reading it to him for several days before his next visit. Like Blue and Joe, he took a friend. And he was fine! He knew exactly what the doctor was going to do. He now loves going to the doctor! We highly recommend it!

Blue Eases Checkup Fears 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Those that have seen the TV episode should have a pretty good idea what this is about. Blue is going for a doctor's appointment, a checkup with Dr. Maya, but she's a bit nervous. She's not really sure what will happen during her visit. We do some roleplay and Blue also gets to bring along Polka Dots to help her feel better. And Blue learns that going for a checkup isn't so bad. She gets her reflexes checked, is weighed (20 pounds), and has her blood pressure tested. And, yes, she gets a shot, which doesn't really hurt all that much. Finally, she gets some stickers.

This book is particularly notable because it's the first one in the numbered series in which they started the practice of Blue talking out loud. "I wonder what will happen during my visit... What will Dr. Maya do?" Oh yeah, this story, like the TV episode, features the male Nurse Kenny and the female Dr. Maya, doing some stereotype-shattering work. This book is sure to be great for any kid that has some fear of going to the doctor.

Editorial Review:

It's time for Blue's checkup! She's feeling a tiny bit nervous about her trip to the doctor's office. What are Dr. Maya and Nurse Kenny going to do during her visit? Come along with Joe and Blue and find out!

Illustrations could be better! 2 out of 5 stars.

Cute idea but the illustrations were not great. My son was not interested in this book at all! Most children are drawn to colorful illustrations...

Pictures need work 3 out of 5 stars.

I think it would be great if they came out with a new edition of this book. The story is great, but the pictures need some serious overhauling-- very pixelated and somewhat outdated.

Our one year old loves this book 5 out of 5 stars.

I love it too. A beautiful book showing a loving family with a nursing toddler. This baby is adorable and the parents are so sweet. The text is a cute rhyme "and her delicious food straight from the heart is giving my life a wonderful start." The last page says "mama's milk, mama's milk what a wonderful drink, it makes darling children, don't you think?" then shows a mirror page. My daughter loves that mirror page! So much fun! Recommmended!!!!

Editorial Review:

In simple rhyming verse, a blissful and contented nursling describes her love for nursing, how breast feeding benefits her, and when, where and how she nurses her mother. Colorful and dreamy soft-focus images realistically depict the joyful and sensual bond between the mother and child as well as the support and adoration of the father.

This was one of my kid's favorites! (and mine) 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is not for uptight parents. The lessons are presented with humor and are a bit gross, which is why KIDS love it. The book is informal and silly and an enjoyable read for everyone. (As a matter of fact, all Babette Cole's books are delightful)

Fun book 5 out of 5 stars.

It may not be for the puritanical but is a typical English childrens book. It pulls no punches and does it in a very funny way. Babette Cole books are all very up front but fun to read. I have yet to read it to a child who didn't break up from Grampa exploding and blowing the roof off when he went to the bathroom.

I'd give this book 10 stars 5 out of 5 stars.

Hands down, this is my son's favorite book. It's humor is raucous and you'll laugh at every page.

Funny for adults as well as little ones. Highly recommend! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a favorite of my two children! They love the funny illustrations and are interested in the descriptions of all the various Gumboyle's ailments. This is a great book for all the four year olds in your life. We have given this as a gift many many times and it is always a hit. Parents might be a little off put by the page with Kevin smoking in the garage or the eggs under the fingernails of the Gumboyle who scratched his bum... but the message about hygiene and bad habits gets across with humor that kids love. Since the first time my children read this they have been compulsive about washing their hands after using the bathroom. It's amazing but Dr. Dog's wisdom got through to them! By far Ms. Cole's best book...

Editorial Review:

Dr. Dog is an absolute whiz at diagnosing common childhood ailments and offering helpful health advice to the Gumboyles, his dysfunctional human family, in a zany story that introduces health and hygiene concepts to small children.

Great beginers book 5 out of 5 stars.
19 of 22 people found this review helpful.

As a mother just begining to teach the "birds and the bees" this is a terrific help. The material is age appropriate and interesting to read. The best part, however, is the Christian aspect. I know that our children will understand and respect their sexuality more because they will know why God gave them this gift and the value of protecting that gift. Thank you Carol Greene for the books!

Excellent first step for addressing this topic 5 out of 5 stars.

My 5 year old daughter enjoyed this book and it relieved me of an awkward subject - the fact that boys are anatomically different from girls. She is an only child and I really don't think she had the occasion to learn the outward differences on her own, so I felt it was time to address it, lest someone take advantage of her lack of knowledge in some nefarious way. This book is very simple and the perfect first book to read to your preschooler about sexual differences. The words were easy to understand, as were the illustrations. Her only reaction to the boy's anatomy was a giggle and "Look" as she pointed to the area, and that was it - she just accepted it without any confusion or concern. I am very glad we started with this one!

Editorial Review:

Simple sex instruction for the preschooler, presented from a Christian point of view.

An excellent book. 5 out of 5 stars.

My son (7 years old) and I were both entranced by this book. Simon describes our circulatory system in detail, with concrete comparisons that children can easily relate to. He is systematic and complete, yet fascinating. The book also has beautiful, full-page, color illustrations, most of which are electron microscope photographs. A great book

Editorial Review:

The heart is a most incredible pump. About the size of a fist and weighing only about as much as one of your sneakers, in an average lifetime a heart will beat over two thousand million times without stopping for rest or repair. The heart pushes a stream of blood through sixty thousand miles of arteries, capillaries, and veins, a journey that carries nutrients and oxygen to every cell in your body.

In stunning photographs that will amaze you with their beauty and color, you will also learn about bacteria-eating white blood cells, blood-clotting platelets, and the spongy marrow tissue, where every second three million red blood cells are made.

In The Heart, award-winning author Seymour Simon begins an exciting series that explores one of the most amazing mysteries in the universe-the human body. join him on a journey as strange and wonderful as any voyage to the stars.

Editorial Review:

It takes a Herculean effort to get my child to: a) brush his or her teeth b) go to sleep c) take a bath d) eat his or her vegetables. If any (or all) of these apply, continue reading. From the treasure chest of Munro Leaf comes another classic in which the beloved author and illustrator uses his time-proven method of talking to children straight—simply getting them to see it how it is. In Brushing Your Teeth Can Be Fun (originally published in 1943 as Health Can Be Fun), Leaf leaves his audience in no doubt that not only can health be fun, but good sense, as well. This book will help boys and girls understand why they should drink their milk, eat their vegetables, get exercise, go to bed on time, brush their teeth, keep clean, and a dozen other things both big and small that are important to building strong, healthy, and happy bodies. With his trademark stick figure drawings and witty text, Leaf will once again elicit peals of mirthful laughter from his little readers, not to mention some big ones who will find this humorous hygiene handbook an indispensable aid in the all-too-familiar night-time (come to think of it, all the time) war with their children about the merits of keeping good health.

Lintball Leo's Not-So-Stupid Questions About Your Body 5 out of 5 stars.

My 8 year old loved the humor in the book, and he appreciated all the important, hard to just "bring up" information that it gave him. I liked the good information that was given, but not "too much" for this age group! I'd definately recommend this book to anyone with a little boy!

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm, How you say.."Puberty!!"..great way to get a conversation going, on an awkward subject! 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book was recommended to us by our family Dr. let me preface this with the disclaimer that he. & we, are Christians :-)

So we had expectations that this would address these subjects from a "Christian" viewpoint. Which it does. Not really from ANY specific "religion", just an over all pointing back to the what the Bible has to contribute to some of the subjects touched upon. It is not trying to convert anyone into any specific religion or anything like that. It just takes it for granted that you know where their views are coming from. IF you are adamant about NOT wanting to hear how someone with a belief in the God of the Bible thinks, then do not get this book! Even though I do not believe in all "views" expressed by the author, it was a good "jumping" off point to open the discussions with my sons (I have 5!) Each one picked out different things that stood out to them to "clarify",
so we feel it is GREAT, IF you are wanting something like that.

Everything a boy ever wanted to know about his body and how to take care of it. Advice from Focus on the Family’s own Dr. Walt Larimore.

Simple, but informative, discussion of the heart and the circulatory system. Book design and illustrations are functional, however the photos are good. Ends with a good "words you know" review of vocabulary. Includes an index. Karen Woodworth-Roman, Children's Science Book Review

Good Lesson 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This book was about how and why children grow. There are great pictures, charts and diagrams to help the author explain that children's bones, organs and even teeth grown and change. She explains that correct nutrition and proper care is needed in order to allow your body to grow and for you to be healthy. The book goes on to say that when you are older your bones may stop growing. However, your hair and nails keep growing. Brandenberg explains very simply what the young readers can expect as they grow.
The main reason why I liked that book was because in the story the author tried to get the point across that everyone grows at different rates. Some people's hair grows faster or they may lose their baby teeth before all the other kids. Also, boys may be shorter than girls when they are young but soon they will be taller than their classmates. It would have been nice to be reassured when I was the littlest in the class that soon I would grow, it will just take time and care.
The author highlights the importance of eating healthy if you want to be big and strong when you are older. She shares with the young readers why their bodies are changing and what they can expect in the growing years to come.

Editorial Review:

Look at me --
I'm growing!

With her trademark simple words and delightful pictures, Aliki explains how and why we grow. Our arms and legs, our hair and toenails, our muscles, bones, and skin all grow from the moment we are born.

Some people grow faster than others; some people grow more than others. With the help of good healthy food, we all grow in our own way and at our own speed.

It will happen to you, too!
