Editorial Review:

"Is it a fact--or have I dreamt it--that, by means of electricity, the world of matter has become a great nerve, vibrating thousands of miles in a breathless point of time?" If you, like Nathaniel Hawthorne, are kept up at night wondering about how things work--from electricity to can openers--then you and your favorite kids shouldn't be a moment longer without David Macaulay's The New Way Things Work. The award-winning author-illustrator--a former architect and junior high school teacher--is perfectly poised to be the Great Explainer of the whirrings and whizzings of the world of machines, a talent that landed the 1988 version of The Way Things Work on the New York Times bestsellers list for 50 weeks. Grouping machines together by the principles that govern their actions rather than by their uses, Macaulay helps us understand in a heavily visual, humorous, unerringly precise way what gadgets such as a toilet, a carburetor, and a fire extinguisher have in common.

The New Way Things Work boasts a richly illustrated 80-page section that wrenches us all (including the curious, bumbling wooly mammoth who ambles along with the reader) into the digital age of modems, digital cameras, compact disks, bits, and bytes. Readers can glory in gears in "The Mechanics of Movement," investigate flying in "Harnessing the Elements," demystify the sound of music in "Working with Waves," marvel at magnetism in "Electricity & Automation," and examine e-mail in "The Digital Domain." An illustrated survey of significant inventions closes the book, along with a glossary of technical terms, and an index. What possible link could there be between zippers and plows, dentist drills and windmills? Parking meters and meat grinders, jumbo jets and jackhammers, remote control and rockets, electric guitars and egg beaters? Macaulay demystifies them all. Editorial Review:

It's a tough job separating truth from urban legend, but the MythBusters are here to serve. For example, is it true that if you step in quicksand , you'll be sucked down to your death? Only two men would be inventive - and adventurous - enough to try to find out: Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman, the MythBusters. Each week, hosts Savage and Hyneman, both special effects experts, use modern science to put another three urban legends to the test on their popular TV show. In this book, you'll learn how they either "busted" or confirmed fifteen myths on their show, often with spectacular results. Here are just some of the urban legends in this book:
  • Did a Ming Dynasty astronaut launch himself into space with a rocket?
  • Can a swallowed octopus egg grow to full size inside a person's stomach?
  • Is the daddy longlegs the world's most venomous spider?
  • Will a sinking ship suck you down?
  • How many balloons are needed to lift a small child off the ground?
  • Does a duck's quack echo?

Mythbusters: Don't Try This at Home! gets to the bottom of these urban legends and more, and it lets you do your own mythbusting with fun experiments you can do safely at home.

Editorial Review:

Whether playing at defending their own castle or simply chucking pumpkins over a fence, wannabe marauders and tinkerers will become fast acquainted with Ludgar, the War Wolf, Ill Neighbor, Cabulus, and the Wild Donkey—ancient artillery devices known commonly as catapults. Building these simple yet sophisticated machines introduces fundamentals of math and physics using levers, force, torsion, tension, and traction. Instructions and diagrams illustrate how to build seven authentic working model catapults, including an early Greek ballista, a Roman onager, and the apex of catapult technology, the English trebuchet. Additional projects include learning how to lash and make rope and how to construct and use a hand sling and a staff sling. The colorful history of siege warfare is explored through the stories of Alexander the Great and his battle of Tyre; Saladin, Richard the Lionheart, and the Third Crusade; pirate-turned-soldier John Crabbe and his ship-mounted catapults; and Edward I of England and his battle against the Scots at Stirling Castle.

Lucy's in the sky, with a diamond 3 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This slight chapter book is a nice finale to the Jewel Fairies series, but it doesn't stand on its own. It keeps referring back to the previous adventures of `tweens Rachel and Kirsty, who in earlier books (see below) have recovered jewels from a queen's crown. The seven books should be read in order for the story to make the most sense.

This time around, the Queen's magic diamond has been hidden in the sky with all the stars. The culprit? Series bad guy Jack Frost, who hurls bolts of ice at the girls to try and stop them. With a lot of help from Lucy the Diamond Fairy and the winged horse Pegasus, Rachel and Kirsty grab the jewel from the sky and save the day.

The series makes for an easy introduction to chapter books for young girls, but a laziness in the writing keeps it from, well, shining. The same words and phrases are used multiple times. For example, in this book Frost lets out a "roar of rage" more than once.

Every page is illustrated with expressive line drawings.

Here are the other books in the series:
Sophie The Sapphire Fairy
Emily The Emerald Fairy
Amy The Amethyst Fairy
Chloe The Topaz Fairy
India The Moonstone Fairy
Scarlett The Garnet Fairy

Editorial Review:

Jack Frost is causing trouble in Fairyland again! This time, he's stolen the seven jewels from Queen Titania's crown. Without them, all the fairy magic in Fairyland is fading fast!

Can Rachel and Kirsty help Lucy the Diamond Fairy find the final jewel? Or will Fairyland's special magic be lost forever?

Beware! This REALLY IS a childrens book!! 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 17 people found this review helpful.

If you want to explain the concept of robots to children, this is a good book. If you want to know anything on the subject as a teenager or an adult, there are better books out there showing better robots.

I suppose that's not really a problem as this is clearly listed as a kiddies book, but look elsewhere on Amazon for truly informative books on the subject, as anyone over the age of 10 won't find what they're looking for here.

Great book for kids and adults who love Robots! 5 out of 5 stars.

First of all DK Eyewitness books are wonderful, beautiful pictures and just enough info for the beginner, makes these books my first choice all the time. I bought this book for my son and daughter along with a robot erector set so they could dabble a bit in robotics. My son has been collecting robots since he was young, the old tin wind up sort, he is hoping for Robosapien this Christmas. This book will give him more info on robotics, a science that is really growing.

Editorial Review:

Take a detailed look at the fascinating world of robots - from the earliest single-task machines to the advanced intelligence of robots with feelings. Young readers will be amazed to learn all that robots can do: perform delicate surgical operations, clean city sewers, work as museum tour guides, or even battle each other in combat. Find out how humans have created these mechanical minds and bodies.

From MP3 Players to Nanorobots in Amazing Color Photographs 5 out of 5 stars.
22 of 22 people found this review helpful.

Through the use of cutaways and exploded views pictures reveal the internal workings of objects and explain various layers and how elements are assembled. This provides fascinating explanations of objects that may otherwise remain a mystery. No need to take apart your MP3 player, you can see inside the player on page 71. There is an explanation of how MP3 compression works along with a 3-D graph.

There are six main chapters:

Connect: Microchips, cell phones, fiber optics, digital radio, voice recognition, satellite, Internet...

Play: Soccer, fabric, cameras, games, guitars, compact discs, MP3 Players, headphones, Fireworks...

Live: Light bulbs, mirrors, solar cells, microwaves, aerogel, shavers, washing machines and robots.

Move: Motorcycles, cars, wheelchairs, jet engines, navigation, space probes, elevators, wind tunnels and space shuttles.

Work: Digital pens, laptops, virtual keyboards, laser printer, smart cards, robot worker, fire suits, radio ID tag, glue and wet welding.

Survive: Laser surgery, robot surgery, MRI scan, pacemaker, cells, vaccination and antibiotics

You may enjoy reading about how fireworks explode and why they display various colors. The pet translator helps you to find out if your dogs barking indicates needy, happy or assertive behavior. Virtual keyboards make using a PDA much easier now that you can type on any flat space.

One of the most fascinating DK books in print. A must have for every library and school, not to mention home library.

Best of the Series 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is an awesome book that shows the individual pieces of each gadget and explains briefly how it works. Very large and crisp pictures like all DK books. With the variety of gadgets and everyday objects, including future tech, this book will appeal to older readers as well as DK's usually young audience. There are many fold out pages that show 4 page spreads of "exploded" stuff.

The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is because the CDROM, while it has cool animations of a few gadgets, it doesn't show all the gadgets. Besides watching the stuff "explode" the CDROM isn't interactive, and it doesn't label the parts. It's mostly a gimmick that looks impressive, but isn't very useful. Don't let that stop you from getting this great book, just don't expect much from the CDROM.

Editorial Review:

The third installment of our visually stunning and incredibly successful Cool Stuff series will blow your mind. This super cool technology book deconstructs-or literally explodes-everyday objects so readers can see exactly how they work. Beautifully photographed spreads show a piece-by-piece breakdown of cell phones, computers, cars, and more, detailing how each part works and how they all fit together as a whole. This unique look at the items we use every day brings science, technology, and wonder to the fore, giving us all a great appreciation for how our twenty-first-century world works. Set into the cover is a CD-ROM containing animations of the "exploded" views featured in the book.

Do you know that right now 16.5 tons of air are pressing on your body? Or that with a simple experiment you can "see" a hole in the middle of your hand? Have you ever tried turning a bucket of water upside down without the water falling out? With DK's remarkable introduction to science, young readers can learn many of the most important principles of chemistry and physics--and have a whole lot of fun while they're at it. This big, handsome volume contains more than 60 hands-on projects testing key scientific theories in magnetism, gravity, liquid density, sound vibrations, the laws of reflection, and much more. In addition, the book features information about famous scientists, new technological advances, and basic theories behind everyday objects and activities. Gorgeous photos and clear, step-by-step instructions make this a learning experience budding young scientists won't mind a bit. Don't be fooled, though. Inaccurate because the plastics veins are sticking out of the body 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I thought this would be neat because of the rave reviews. I see where the concept is nice, but it is inaccurate. For my kindergartener, I think a transparency would be more ideal. I wish someone would recommend something.

Great for younger kids too! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My daughter at age 6 received this book as a gift from her uncle. She wasn't interested in it at all. Surprisingly, my son (age 3 at the time) grabbed it and has been coveting it for a year now.

A year has gone by and the book (minus a few pieces) is still in good shape, and best of all. At age 4, my son knows the name of every organ and it's location.

The only issue for younger kids is that the small organs can break off so I wouldn't recommend it for kids younger then 3.

Editorial Review:

The Uncover series combines the best elements of a book with model elements to help readers truly "uncover" the mysteries of what makes things work. A fascinating three-dimensional presentation allows in-depth, hands-on exploration of the subject at hand. This unique "model" is easily build, deconstructed and re-built layer by layer, system by system just by turning a page, until an understanding of the topic is achieved. The complexities of the human body can be daunting, particularly for children. This book-model combination takes some of the mystery out of how the body works. It covers all the major systems and processes. Children get to look at each system on a different page, then by closing the book, combine them into a whole. 16 pages. Ages 8+
