Math Curse 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Have you ever had the math curse? Well, in the book Math Curse, a young boy gets put under the math curse. It all started when his teacher said, "You know, you can think of almost everything as a math problem." That got his mind turning. After that, EVERYTHING was a math problem to him. This little boy had a creative mind. 24 cupcakes, 25 students, 365 days, 52 weeks, 12 months hmm... Will this curse ever leave him alone?
This story is realistic fiction. The author, Jon Scieszka, does a wonderful job explaining every thing. It is easy to understand and to follow. I think that anyone who knows how to read would enjoy this book. Never before have I read a book quite like this one. It is almost like a Roald Dahl book, where your mind will be wondering what will happen untill the very end. Personally, I loved this book, and I am sure that you will too.

Editorial Review:

Did you ever wake up to one of those days where everything is a problem? You have 10 things to do, but only 30 minutes till the bus leaves. Is there enough time? You have 3 shirts and 2 pairs of pants -- can you make 1 good outfit? Don't worry -- it's just the Math Curse striking! An amusing book about dealing with numbers in everyday life.

Great Way Of Sneaking In Math! 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

My daughter has always had a problem learning Math but reading this book (along with the others in this series) has helped her immensely! The books themselves are a bit young for her but the concepts in them (Pi, Geometry, etc) are explained in a way I think she needed.

I would recommend these to anyone who has a child with problems in math concepts.

Led to instant recall of proper geometric terms 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

My kids (9 and 6) , who are homeschooled, loved this story and it resulted in them being able to instantly recall the proper names of geometric elements and classes (e.g., radius, circumference, obtuse, acute). This is probably due to the clever visual and contextual associations provided. We bought another book in the series right afterward with the same results. Plan to get them all.

Sir Cumference and the First Round Table: A Math Adventure 5 out of 5 stars.

Very cute story and a nice way of using word play to describe geometric vocabulary. Great for an introduction to the concept and as a review for older children.

Editorial Review:

Young Robert's dreams have taken a decided turn for the weird. Instead of falling down holes and such, he's visiting a bizarre magical land of number tricks with the number devil as his host. Starting at one and adding zero and all the rest of the numbers, Robert and the number devil use giant furry calculators, piles of coconuts, and endlessly scrolling paper to introduce basic concepts of numeracy, from interesting number sequences to exponents to matrices. Author Hans Magnus Enzensberger's dry humor and sense of wonder will keep you and your kids entranced while you learn (shhh!) mathematical principles. Who could resist the little red guy who calls prime numbers "prima donnas," irrational numbers "unreasonable," and roots "rutabagas"? Not that the number devil is without his devilish qualities. He loses his temper when Robert looks for the easy way out of a number puzzle or dismisses math as boring and useless. "What do you expect?" he asks. "I'm the number devil, not Santa Claus." A wonderful way to remember pi 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I feel the age range given on the website should not be ages 4-8. This is appropriate for 8 and up. That said, my 5 year old enjoys it as just a fairy tale and I would not attempt any "teaching" to him. He listens as I read it to my older daughters and maybe it will seep in so when he's old enough to begin measuring, he will easily grasp the concepts.

This is a wonderful book - good illustrations and a clever story. The author works the math part in without it being cumbersome. A few times through this book and your child will have a good grasp of pi. At the least, it will be a good memory trigger if he/she needs help in class.

Great Book 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a great book to teach kids about the number pi. This is a book that makes math fun and gets kids interested in learning math.

Clever with Much Kid Appeal 5 out of 5 stars.

This is great. My nine yr. old niece loved it, and she was able to understand the concept. Clever and good learning approach. Even her little brother was fascinated by the pictures, so I'm sure he will make use of it when he gets older. The artwork is really good, classic in style but with a lot of individuality. I recommend this for a range of ages because kids will grow into the book, and it is a wonderful way to learn.

Meatball the Pirate 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Once upon a time many years ago I watched my daughter Emma play with her cousin Brian, whom Emma lovingly referred to as Meatball, and I wondered how long it would take before he began to cry. At eight years old Meatball looked like a smaller version of Rhett Butler, he talked with a squeaky voice that was struggling to mature, and his blondish hair oddly matched the color of his skin. Every game between the two kids eventually turned sour--a bump of the head, a twisted arm or even harsh words would send the boy reeling into the kitchen looking for comfort. While I admired his theatrics, I did not acknowledge them. Emma, on the other hand, like to pretend he was her plaything, a doll she collected. Take, for example, the afternoon she dressed him up like a pirate and sent him out into the yard with a steak knife searching for the neighborhood tabby cat. Florence, the woman that lived across the street and spent most of her days with her nose between the blinds of her front window, knocked on my door and demanded that I do something. I invited her in for coffee but she ranted and raved, cluck-clucking about manners and responsibilities and child-rearing, none of which I particularly cared to hear about. Meatball ran inside and tugged at Florence's blue polyester pants. "Don't worry," he said. "I buried the knife in the backyard." Florence grabbed his wrist and told him that he needed to dig it back up. He sighed heavily, stared at the ground and then began to cry. I pulled the cigarettes from the pocket of my robe, lit it, and waved him inside.

Charlotte, Meatball's mother, picked him up every day at 5 o'clock. She sat on the couch with Meatball on her lap and listened as he recounted his day. She disregarded any of Emma's attempts to defend herself when Meatball claimed she had harmed him. But who would believe an eight-year-old boy that said his cousin had instructed him to hunt for prey and bring back souvenirs?

Fun and educational 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 12 people found this review helpful.

My nine-year-old loved the earlier books in the Sir Cumference series, and was excited to hear that a new one was available. He enjoyed it thoroughly, for both the story and the math content. This series of books ranks near the top of his favorites list.

Medieval Math Adventure 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Back in the days of Camelot, people knew geometry, but they learned it in adventures instead of textbooks. Per of Ameter played a game created by the Countess Areana in which they figured the outside edges and inner pieces of shapes made with the same size squares. Their skill at this game allowed them to solve several mysteries on the Isle of Immeter through a few escapes, as the island was protected by a sea dragon. Finally Per solved all the puzzles, and the sea dragon delivered a locked from the Countess Areana giving Per ownership of the island. When the two children returned from their adventure, Sir Cumference named the measurement of the outside edge of any flat, straight sided shape perimeter, after Per, who now was the Lady of Immeter. The inside of the shapes was called Area, after the Countess Areana who designed all the puzzles they solved. And so, as you will know if you have read this book, this is a cute, abbreviated account of the true way geometry really evolved.

A handy chart on the last page explains in mathematical terms the formulas described in the book.

Editorial Review:

When young Per visits her uncle Sir Cumference and his family, she learns how to play the game, "Inners and Edges." After she finds a clue linking the game to the mysterious castle on the island of Immeter, she must figure out how to find the perimeter and area of a circle to unlock the island's secret.\n\nMath skills taught include finding the area and perimeter of a rectangle and a circle. Introduces an underlying concept of calculus -- using straight lines to measure curves.

Falls short, and a negative message about math 1 out of 5 stars.
14 of 15 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book after reading all of the positive reviews. I hate to be a grouch, but I am disappointed and will return the book for the following reasons: First, children need repetition to learn. Instead of merely showing the ants running around to rearrange themselves with each division and then going on to the next, the book should reiterate the new number of rows and how many are in each. More importantly, the message of the story is negative. It shows that the divisions were a waste of time, and the smart little ant who knew how to divide is scorned by all his ant-friends in the end. That is certainly not something I will read to my already math-apprehensive niece. Adults may be able to extract business lessons out of the story, as one reviewer wrote, but if the intent is to teach math concepts to young children, the message should be that math is useful, valuable, and fun. On a less important note, another reason I am disappointed in the book is that the rhyming meter is quite poor.

Editorial Review:

Hi dee ho! It's off to a picnic we go! One hundred very hungry ants hurry to sample the delights of a picnic, but marching in single file seems too slow for 100 empty tummies. The smallest ant of all suggests they travel in 2 rows of 50, four rows of 25 .

ANOTHER WONDERFUL OFFERING FROM DEMI 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This wonderful Indian folk tale is brought to life by some wonderful illustrations and art work. Demi is one of the better illustrators, and indeed, writers of children's books active today. I do not know of one book by this author that is not a complete delight to the eye and ear.

This is a story of a "Wise Raja" and how he is tricked by a little girl. This ruler made the decision one day that he must gather all the rice in the land and store it away for future use. He left the poor people of the land in a state of starvation while he feasted at his palace from his over filled store houses. One day some grains of rice fall from the basket being carried to the Raja's home and a little girl gathers them up, but instead of keeping the rice, she returns it to the wise ruler. As a reward, he offers her anything she wants. She asks for one grain of rice. The Raja more or less insists she ask for more, so she tells him she would like one grain of rice, but would like to have it doubled every day for thirty days. The first day, one grain, the second two, the third four, and the fifth eight...and so on until the last day. You do the math. Needless to say at the end of the thirty days, the little girl has all the rice and the Raja has none.

This is an interesting story and an excellent lesson in math, in greed, in giving and in compassion, all wrapped up in one small book. The illustrations consists of full page pictures done in the style of India and is sprinkled with traditional miniature paintings as well. The detail and vivid colors are a feast for the eye.

This book seems to fascinate children. I have noted that they pull it form the shelf and set and read and look at the pictures over and over again. As an adult, I know I see something different each time I read the thing to a class. The children are absolutely amazed when it finally dawns on them what the little girl has done and it makes quite an impact when they realize the power of numbers. This is a great read-a-long book as you can give a mini math lesson and a moral lesson at the same time. I never tire reading it. To be honest, the pictures are worth the price of the book alone.

Don Blankenship
The Ozarks

Editorial Review:

Exotic, beautiful, and instructive, this "mathematical folktale" by author-illustrator Demi emerged from her love of India. The narrative and the evocative illustrations combine to create a real sense of the culture and atmosphere of this romantic land.

It's the story of Rani, a clever girl who outsmarts a very selfish raja and saves her village. When offered a reward for a good deed, she asks only for one grain of rice, doubled each day for 30 days. Remember your math? That's lots of rice: enough to feed a village for a good long time--and to teach a greedy raja a lesson.

Mathematics Made Simple 4 out of 5 stars.
25 of 26 people found this review helpful.

This book is a good resource for teachers! It is full of fun, interesting, and relatively simple activities that make abstract mathematical concepts come to life. Math is made less intimidating, because the mystery behind it is revealed by a curious cat with whom children can relate. The book takes mathematical concepts that might otherwise be too complex for children to grasp and simplifies them, making them more "kid friendly." Younger children, who are more likely to enjoy the cat's stories, may not fully appreciate the mathematical content. They will, however, benefit from the books pleasant introduction to mathematical concepts. Similarly, older children, who are more likely to fully appreciate the mathematical content, may not enjoy Penrose as much (or at least they might not admit that they do). However, learning with Penrose will still make the experience less intimidating. The book is clever and a great tool for teaching math, while easing and/or preventing math phobia. I will definitely use this book in my own classroom!

Editorial Review:

Penrose, a cat with a knack for math, takes children on an adventurous tour of mathematical concepts from fractals to infinity. When the fractal dragon jumps off the computer screen and threatens to grow larger than the room itself, Penrose must find out if fractal patterns can work in reverse, getting smaller instead of larger.

Fun escapades teach geometry painlessly! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Some years ago, we stumbled upon these books at the library. They were an instant hit - every single one in the Sir Cumference series! We check out lots of books but this one the children remembered. In fact, we hadn't checked these out for a couple of years when one son started a new geometry section in math and asked me to get these again so he could review! My preschooler thinks of these as fun stories and enjoys the illustrations while the older crew is making the connections to mathematical concepts they are learning. For example, one child always keeps diameter and radius straight because of the book characters (Radius is the little guy!). I highly recommend this series as enjoyable literature that will help your children remember their geometry. The books also have an object or character (jester, seagull, rat, cat, etc.) that appears on most pages which is an extra bit of fun to look for. I love the rich colors and oil painting technique too (I may be wrong about the oil painting but that's the feel of it). I decided these belong in our home library and was especially pleased that Amazon was running its buy 3 get 1 free promotion just then.
