Accurate, fun pictures. 5 out of 5 stars.
26 of 26 people found this review helpful.

This is a book which is accurate in its drawings, with the official names for many, if not all, the different species. I am an adult, a frustrated artist with no talent whatsoever for drawing. I have really enjoyed coloring these pictures with colored pencils. There is a lot of small detail work in some of the pictures, which I think would be difficult with crayons, but of course, all the detail doesn't need to be observed. I have loved this book and have colored 2/3 of the pictures. It is my favorite of the half dozen coloring books I bought. There are completed colored pictures of about a quarter of the drawings, which I appreciate very much, as it gives inspiration to those of us who would like to experiment with shading, etc.

Creative and Fun learning tool 5 out of 5 stars.

Adults and kids who enjoy art and/or nature will find the books in this series enjoyable. You can simply enjoy putting colors together to create your own world of creatures or flowers (depending upon which book you order) or you can do the research and create a realistic world of color and beauty complete with learning the different names for the fish and under water foliage or the flowers or the butterflies etc in other books. Whether used as a learning tool or just for creative expression adults and children alike enjoy these books. I keep a selection of these types of coloring books around around the house with a very large selection of gel pens and markers for my neices and nephews and they come over frequently to visit while we all sit down to color, nothing else, Though I wouldn't sit to color a regular coloring book, these and the geometric or mandrel design coloring books are more on an adult level and I enjoy sitting with them as we chat about what is happening in their lives as we color. I believe they open up more because the coloring alows them to avoid the intensity of one-on-one coversations about emotional things in their lives. Open a door, sit and color with your pre-teen or teen and just be available to talk. You may be surprised at what doors you are opening, beyond the creativity of a child and yourself.

Editorial Review:

Forty-four realistic drawings of parrotfish, octopus, damselfish, moray eel, sea cucumber, dolphin, medusa jellyfish, sea dragon, many more. Captions.

My five year old enjoyed this book 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 13 people found this review helpful.

We enjoy the "Let's - Read - & - Find - Out" series of books. This one is a good addition, explaining seeds on my five year old son's level of understanding . Something that many adult writers of childrens' science books sometimes aren't very good at getting across. It is in my child's library at school.

The books in this series are informative and interesting for their target audiences. The illustrations are well done and add to understanding the process being described. They make it easier to follow for kids.

A beautiful, insightful book 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

The simplicity of this book and its beautiful illustrations will appeal to young readers, and the messages about trust, letting go and the cycle of life are quite beautiful.

Not an eviction---you're just being re-planted. 5 out of 5 stars.

My 2 year olds both walked away before the end. Maybe they knew I was thinking how helpful the story will be to start preparing them now for the inevitable difficult separation from the "growth stem". Just as I was celebrating the warm and original perspective of the book I almost gagged on the treacly rear flap author profile of wife's illustrations and husband's text. But I highly recommend it

A sweet little story 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This is the sweet little story about a dandelion seed that will not let go because it's afraid of the world. Eventually, the winds blow it free and it travels the world and learns that it can be amazing, scary and beutiful. Eventually, it lands, grows, and casts it's seeds. One does not want to go and the dandelion having learned tells it the sun, the wind and the rain will take care of it.

The art work is well done.

However, I am not sure my daughter likes the book. She does not ask for it. However, it's soft reading style does help make her sleepy.

Editorial Review:

The humble dandelion. By roadside or mountainside, it flowers every month of the year throughout the world, a fitting symbol of life. Its journey is our journey, filled with challenge, wonder and beauty. This popular, simple book is beautiful and touching.

It's Not Quite Seuss, But It's Not Bad 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Joining the ranks of characters who live on long after their creators has passed away, it's The Cat in the Hat!

Here, you get to see the cat, Thing 1 and Thing 2, and the two kids as they explore the basics of flowering plants. The prose is at an appropriate level for kids who like the longer Dr. Seuss books. The illustrations (by Aristides Ruiz) are so close to the original that I couldn't tell the difference.

The only minor quibble is that the words don't flow QUITE as well as Theodore Geisel's words. Then again, few writer's words do. Also, Ms. Worth is faced with trying to teach a subject and entertain at the same time. At that task, she succeeds admirably.

Highly recommended.

A fun book 5 out of 5 stars.

My 4 year old really enjoys this whole series of Cat in the Hat books. He loves "reading" about insects, flowers, space, etc. The format of this series of books is very similar (if not exact)and are easy to follow and keeps a busy boy captivated. The rhyming, illustrations (& antics) keep my son interested and learning in the process.

Editorial Review:

With the able assistance of Thing 1 and Thing 2 -- and a fleet of Rube Goldbergian vehicles -- the Cat in the Hat examines the various parts of plants, seeds, and flowers; basic photosynthesis and pollination; and
seed dispersal.

Genius. 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 12 people found this review helpful.

Sometimes a book is so lovely, it is difficult to review. You just want to throw a bunch of words out, like, "stunning," "superb," "gorgeous," and "accomplished." There. I'm done. No? Okay, then, on with the review.

Dianna Hutts Aston and Sylvia Long team up again after their Cybils Non-Fiction Award-winning "An Egg is Quiet." Now I know what all the fuss is about. Aston takes a non-fiction topic and turns it into a lyrical work of genius. In "A Seed is Sleepy" the seed is the topic du jour. Now we've all read a non-fiction title or two about seeds. But Aston's genius is taking the mundane and making it beautiful. Take the opening page, for example:

A seed is sleepy.

It lies there, tucked inside its flower,
or its cone, or beneath the soil. Snug. Still.

Rendered in open, easy-to-read cursive, these lines are pure poetry and set the frame for the book. Each double-page spread begins with a similar seed statement and Dianna Hutts Aston's choices are always unexpected. My favorite is "A seed is inventive" and is followed by:

To find a spot to grow,
A seed might leap from its pod,
[violet]
or cling to a
child's shoestring,
[cocklebur]
or tumble through
a bear's belly.
[Red huckleberry]
A seed hopes to land where
there is plenty of
sunlight, soil, and water.

Sylvia Long's ink and watercolor illustrations are worthy of any nineteenth-century illustrated nature classic. Full color and lush, you want to snip each one out and make a gorgeous collage until you remember you'd destroy this amazing book.

"A Seed is Sleepy" will be enjoyed by children of all ages and all tastes. The story fan will appreciate Aston's way with words, while the non-fiction freak will relish the information presented. And the best news? Parents won't be bored reading this one aloud, either.

Editorial Review:

Award-winning artist Sylvia Long and author Dianna Hutts Aston have teamed up again to create this gorgeous and informative introduction to seeds. Poetic in voice and elegant in design, the book introduces children to a fascinating array of seed and plant facts, making it a guide that is equally at home being read on a parent's lap as in a classroom reading circle.

Interesting details on plants 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book along with Plants Bite Back. We had already read our library copy of the Plants Bite Back and I actually was not sure I needed another book on carniverous plants. To my surprise, this little book offers other very important and interesting details on plants that are not in the other book (which is an excellent book also).

I am glad we got this book (e.g.it explained why we shouldn't keep touching the Venus Flytrap--it probably saved the plant's life from inquisitive little hands).

Excellent first book on carnivorous plants 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is an excellent first book to fire up the interest of children in carnivorous plants. This is a hobby of mine, and I have an extensive collection, and am interested in conservation of their habitats.

The book talks about the major genera of carnivorous plants (although it completely skips Pinguicula, the butterworts). The full-color illustrations are beautiful and accurate. The information in the book is all factually accurate. It even briefly covers conservation.

Editorial Review:

This book offers readers a bug’s-eye view into the strange and fascinating world of carnivorous plants. From the “jaws” of the Venus flytrap to the pretty sundew plant whose delicate tentacles entrap its prey, the unique anatomy and behaviors of meat-eating plants are detailed with clear, engaging text and art.

not the best for intended age group 3 out of 5 stars.
13 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I think this book is fine, but not for the preschool crowd. I would use it with older children -- elementary age -- to discuss the life cycle of an annual, the role of the seasons, and the challenges of reproduction which must be overcome by all plants. The Tiny Seed introduces us to many of the hazards faced by seeds and seedlings as they attempt to grow (from falling in water and drowning, being eaten by birds or mice, being overshadowed by large weeds, being stepped on by children, and more) and shows how the ideal environment is a necessity. It covers the role of sunshine and rain, how the seed swells and bursts open, how the plant develops as it grows, and how it produces and disperses its seeds to carry on the next generation. It's not a book for small children, though, since its mostly non-fiction tone is dry, the phrases are stilted, and it doesn't read aloud well. I find it difficult to "cheer on" the tiny seed; where others see him as a hero facing difficult odds, I think the book is too grimly determined to be educational and becomes boring for the youngest child. If you want a book to introduce a unit on seed dispersal, this is the one. If you want to talk with your three year old about the cycle of the seasons, you'd be better off with the Spring/Summer/Autumn/Winter collection by Gerda Muller.

Editorial Review:

In autumn, a strong wind blows flower seeds high in the air and carries them far across the land. One by one, many of the seeds are lost -- burned by the sun, fallen into the ocean, eaten by a bird. But some survive the long winter and, come spring, sprout into plants, facing new dangers -- trampled by playing children, picked as a gift for a friend. Soon only the tiniest seed remains, growing into a giant flower and, when autumn returns, sending its own seeds into the wind to start the process over again.

Eric Carle's eloquent text and brilliant collages turn the simple life cycle of a plant into an exciting story, a nature lesson, and an inspiring message of the importance of perseverance.

An excellent combination of art and science. 5 out of 5 stars.
38 of 40 people found this review helpful.

I am a teacher who has used Look What I Did With a Leaf during my science study of trees. The children collected leaves from the school campus, sorted them, and talked about their purpose as a part of the tree. The children then used their leaves to create leaf creatures which they used to make leaf print t-shirts. This book was a hit with the children and certainly served us well by getting their creative juices flowing.

Naturecrafts ohhh the endless possibilities 5 out of 5 stars.

I am using this book this fall with my preschoolers. After reading the book we will go for a nature walk and then will us the leaves and such found to make their own creatures, which we will turn into placemats to use at snack time. This is a great book and their are so many ways you can use this in the classroom.
