Great book for the car! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

After reading many reviews on here, I bought this book wondering what I'd get. It seems that most reviews here are either very strongly liking this book or very strongly not liking it (it's a kid's book for gosh sakes!)

Anyway, my son loves this book! It's the perfect size to hand him in the car or leaf through and talk about at a restaurant while waiting for food. The book is silly and fun- so please lighten up if you're not sure what a "corn car" is or whatever. Richard Scarry wasn't afraid to use his imagination, and was a lot of fun as a result.

It's an inexpensive book that takes a few minutes to flip through. Golden, in my eyes!

tiny truck book 5 out of 5 stars.

the perfect size for dropping in your purse for keeping a little boy entertained...my son loves the big richard scarry 'cars and trucks and things that go' which is too big to take along, so this is great for portability.

that starts with an ambulance and ends with a zippercar, is shaped like Lowly

This Book Sends The Wrong Message 1 out of 5 stars.
7 of 14 people found this review helpful.

Fireman Small rushes to a house that is on fire with smoke coming out all the windows and doors. Nevertheless, there is a picture and text "The family carry sofa, lamps, tables, and chairs out of the house." And yet, they still manage to leave a girl child and her pet cat upstairs.

What kind of message is this? Aren't you supposed to grab your family and get out of the house if there is a fire? What's all this about moving all of your furniture and leaving your kid and cat behind?

A Classic! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This is my two and a half year old son's ABSOLUTE favorite book. He asks to read "Fireman Small" every day at naptime and at bedtime too. ( we usually read it several times each sitting!) He has had this book since he was 12 months old and it was an instant hit with him. His favorite part is when fireman small saves the little girl and her kitten, he throws his arms up and yells Hooray! It is a great book about an everyday hero (fireman small). The classic illustrations are wonderful and a breath of fresh air in this computer generated age. I would highly reccomend this book for any toddler.

Editorial Review:

Mr. Small does it all!

In this adventure, Fireman Small rushes to battle a fire in town. When the alarm bell rings, Fireman Small suits up and roars down the road in his shiny red fire engine. When he helps extinguish the fire and rescues a young girl, Fireman Small becomes a hero in Tinytown.

Now back in print in full color, Lois Lenski's timeless story of Fireman Small and his little fire engine is sure to delight a new generation of young readers.

We love Big Joe! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I loved this book as a kid 25 years ago, and now I love reading it to my 20-month old son. My son loves Joe, too, and wants to read it over and over. Joe seems like such a friendly, hard-working fellow, and he's a wonderful example for kids. The illustrations are about the best I've ever seen in a children's book, so good, in fact, I sometimes pick it up even after my son goes to bed!

Another Second Generation Reader 5 out of 5 stars.

I, too, fondly recall having this book read to me by my father as a child. Now I'm a father, and I'm reading it to my 2 year old sons (the same copy!). The story line is simple but not patronizing, the illustrations are busy and colorful, and the kids love learning about trucks as the story unfolds. How else could a 2 year old not only know what an "air filter" is, but know that it sticks out the top of the hood to collect air?

Editorial Review:

Illus. in full color. Preschool truck lovers can follow Big Joe through a typical day's work. The marvelously detailed paintings culminate in a double-page spread that labels every conceivable working part of a tractor-trailer rig.

I love this book called The Big Red Car, because, it's based on a song from (Wiggly, Wiggly World)-"In The Big Red Car We Like To Ride".

As always, Greg does the driving and the other Wiggles, Anthony, Murray and Jeff are three passengers.

We love the big red car 5 out of 5 stars.

By far, my 3 year old son's favorite book of all time! He memorized all the words and spouts them off spontaneously. Any boy will love this book, especially if they love trucks!!! I bought this book for all of my friend's boys and gave them as birthday gifts! Everyone loved it!!!

How Many Trucks Can A Tow Truck Tow 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This has to be the ultimate book for little boys who love trucks. We got to the point that the boys would "sing" along and I could just close my eyes, because we all knew the words!!

Still One of My Favorite Books 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I was first read this book when I was about 4 or 5 years old.

Since then, I've read TONS. Shakespeare, Hemmingway, Melville, Dickens, and Hawthorne. I've read romance novels, sci-fi novels, political thrillers, John Grisham books, espionage novels, and guides on how to score high on the SAT. I've read some of the best books ever written by some of the smartest people in their field.

And to this day, "How Many Trucks Can a Tow Truck Tow?" is still one of my top 3 favorite books.

Buy it for your kids and read it to them as many times as they want. It's catchy, funny, and cute. Five Stars.

Editorial Review:

Now available for the first time ever in paperback--the beloved book that was named a Library of Congress Book of the Year in 1987! Follow the jaunty little tow truck as he rescues three fellow tow trucks.

lots of fun for little truck enthusiasts 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Our three-year old loves this book. Each spread features a full-page photograph of a big construction vehicle at work with text on the facing page. The wording is exciting, e.g. "Climb up in the cab and start your engine!" and interspersed throughout are symbols that correspond to pads at the right margin of the book. When your child presses the appropriate button, the story comes alive with the sound of a truck starting up, a horn, a digger scooping dirt, a backing-up beep or a jackhammer. The sounds are realistic and pretty clear. Your small truck devotee should really enjoy this exciting book.

Start up the engine, blow the horn and start digging! Imagine yourself in the operator's seat of a tractor, a giant excavator, a landfill compactor, a wheel loader and a massive off-highway truck. With full-color photos and five different sound buttons, Big Noisy Trucks and Diggers brings the sights and sounds of a construction site to life.

nice illustrations and great for vehicle loving younger readers 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

My 2.5 yr old toddler loves trucks and airplanes and all things wheeled. We got this and The Three Little Rigs by the same author (which I promptly put away to be read at a much later date because it seemed to scary to me for my child at this age - I need to review it again). But so far we love the Ugly Truckling. It is a book for younger "readers" as one review said - as it may be obvious to an older child right away that the Ugly Truckling is in fact an airplane. But my child loves responding "No..." when the Ugly Truckling asks the tractor, "Am I a tractor?" or asks the cow, "Am I a cow?"

And I DISAGREE with the reviewers who state this book is a "tale of intolerance and segregation" and that "as not all family members look alike now, Interracial marriages/families and those families that adopt a child of a different race may want to avoid this book..." As a parent of a interracial child myself, I paid attention to noting that although there was a physical difference between Trucks and Airplanes they were all different colors within each family. So I think its all about how YOU as the parent interpret these differences to your young child. (You could compare physical differences between being tall or short or a cat or a dog, or a boy or a girl...)

But as this is a book that would seem work best for younger children, my thoughts are that my child is just going to enjoy this story as one about an Airplane trying to figure out who HE is. And if/when he is old enough to discuss this on another level - again as his parent I hope I have the intelligence to try help him see that its the differences that make us special and interesting to each other and the world, no matter what species, color, gender, or make and model...

Editorial Review:

As hard as she tries, the ugly truckling cannot keep up with her brothers and sisters. She can't pull logs, she can't carry hay, and her three small wheels are no match for their four big, strong ones. She'll never be a good truck. So the ugly truckling runs away from home in search of her own identity -- and finds out that she may not be such an ugly truckling after all.

David Gordon's fresh twist on a familiar tale is as endearing as it is poignant.

Actual photographs of the construction stuff your kids love 5 out of 5 stars.

My son loves trucks (he's 15 mos. old) and he loves this book. It is his favorite. Definitely buy it for your little truck lover too (whenever my son sees a bulldozer, he now says "bull" after reading this book over and over!).

Incorrect names for equipment but good book 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I would really like this book but unfortunately the author uses the wrong names for some of the construction equipment. We will continue to enjoy the book until my daughter learns to read. After that...

The most glaring misname is the crawler EXCAVATOR which Tana calls a crawler backhoe. The wheeled backhoe is referred to as a backhoe. Plus forklift is normally used for the small machines you think of in warehouses not the larger construction site equipment.

For those who are really interested the other industry names are Manlift (cherry picker), Telescopic Handler (forklift), Telescopic Handler being used like a crane (forklift crane).

Editorial Review:

Crisp, clear, full-color photographs show all the fascinating machines and earthmovers found at a construction site. Even the very youngest readers will want to put on hard hats!

"The roaring power of 13 construction machines is captured in clear, brilliantly colored photographs." -- Booklist
