A must have for community library collections with a focus on children's books. 5 out of 5 stars.

Bears are more than just soft plush objects for children - they are intriguing creatures in their own right. "Our Three Bears" looks at three major species of bears in black bears, grizzly bears, and polar bears. Packed with more than enough information to keep children who love bears glued to the book, "Our Three Bears" is further enhanced with full color photography. A must have for community library collections with a focus on children's books.

Editorial Review:

Bears roam North America from the waters of the Canadian arctic to the forests of the United States southeast. Black, grizzly, and polar bears are thrilling to see in the wild and exciting to study. In order to appreciate how wonderful bears are it helps to get to know them. Black bears, the most abundant bear in North America, can be seen just a short distance from populated areas. Their numbers are stable and even increasing in some places. Unlike black bears, however, grizzly bears are a rare sight. They have completely disappeared from California, though they remain the state's emblem. Polar bears are not easy to see, either, living in lands that are difficult to reach.

This is a wonderful book for children just learning their animal sounds. I have twin 18 month old boys and they scream every time I bring it out. I read it to them and they will say the animal sound. I highly recommend it!

Good book but it needs to be handle with care. 3 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

Children love animal stories, and this book is full of them, as well as fascinating factoids, quizzes, brainteasers, and photos of the strangest animals imaginable (ever seen a surfing hippo?). Here are pets that saved their owners' lives, animals that performed amazing feats of bravery, and critters that behave like people. Readers learn about working animals - "nosy" dogs whose keen sniffers help find lost children, rescue people trapped in buildings, and bust drug smugglers. Uncle John goes behind the scenes to hunt down Hollywood hounds - what are their home lives like? Who are their personal trainers? Can they really understand English? Going back in time, the book takes a look at animal mummies, marvels at a perfectly preserved wooly mammoth, and explains why scientists believe dolphins and humans are descended from the same distant relative. Also included in the fun are animal myths, legends, constellations, forensics, names, weird pets, an animal sideshow, and much more. Irresistible and educational, the book helps young readers settle down to some serious business.

I purchased this book for my 10 year old nephew, and he loves it! It is a fascinating overlay approach to displaying the anatomy of creatures that have fascinated children for generations. Frankly, all of the adults in our family love the book, too!

Great gift, and great teaching tool!

The Uncover series combines the best elements of a book with model elements to help readers truly "uncover" the mysteries of what makes things work. A fascinating three-dimensional presentation allows in-depth, hands-on exploration of the subject at hand. This unique "model" is easily built, deconstructed and re-built layer by layer, system by system just by turning a page, until an understanding of the topic is achieved. Uncover a T. Rex examines the structure and fossilized bones of the most powerful meat-eating animal to ever live on land. Learn about scientists' theories and observations and how they came to their conclusions, Discover where T. Rex fossils were found in the U.S., if they were hunters or scavengers, if they were related to birds, and how fast this enormous animal could run.

The graphics and images are compelling, and it's loaded with facts. I used this book to enhance a science exhibit for K-8, and all ages learned interesting things from it. For younger or less confident readers, each 2-page spread has a different topic, so it is easy to read a bit and then put it down until the next time. I thought it would be watered down for the older children, but was pleasantly surprised that it had plenty of depth for the older ones.

A perfect read-aloud book for parents to share 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Recommended for children ages 2 to 5, The Animals' Writer Sleep is a rhyming picturebook about where various animals sleep in cold and snowy weather. Gentle illustrations in cool, soothing colors show different animals sleeping snugly in their dens, nests, burrows, and lodges. "Where do the northern animals sleep / when it's nose-stinging cold / and the snow drifts deep? // Bedded down in the spruce grove, / where the howling winds don't blow." A perfect read-aloud book for parents to share with little ones just before bedtime.

Editorial Review:

Taking nonfiction into the realm of bedtime read-to-me stories, this rich, melodic text paired with detailed color pencil illustrations describes how 13 North American animal species—such as black bear, ermine, pileated woodpecker, porcupine, river otter, and ruffed grouse—survive harsh winter snows snug inside their dens, nests, burrows, and lodges. Additional information, geared to very young children, includes animal winter survival adaptations, such as the foods they eat, nesting materials, camouflage, and predator survival along with a series of questions that encourage children to look back at the illustrations for clues. A line art diagram of the final panorama illustration that identifies the location of all 13 animal species is also included.

Teaches the wrong lessons 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This book couples real photographs with a gentle story about Henry, a duck who is raised on a farm near a pond. Unlike other books in this series, the boy who raises Henry remains nameless, and the book is more about life from the animal's perspective, and less about the relationship between the child and the animal.

Many of the pictures are cute, but, as with other books in the series, the educational value is muddied by failing to address issues related to the animal's welfare. In this case, the boy takes home a duck egg (a pretty bad idea), and uses an incubator to hatch Henry out. The boy also makes the mistakes of putting the hatchling into a wading pond before it can swim, and of using a hairdryer to dry the duck off. In the end, the duck wanders off to the pond where his egg was found, and meets up with a female duck. Presumably, Henry will return to a life in the wild. In reality, this readjustment is probably not possible. I'm not hung up on the idea of truth in children's books, but I do think that the authors should focus on positive, responsible pet ownership, particularly if they are joined by realistic photographs, giving the book more of an authentic feel.

Children who are exposed to this book should be taught not to bring home an egg from the wild, and also that raising a wild animal is a responsibility that doesn't end with allowing the animal to wander off into the world.

Full-color photographs. Humorous factual account of a year in a duck's life.

Editorial Review:

Jane Goodall might be a household name for most grownups, thanks to her pioneering work with chimpanzees and more recent efforts at habitat preservation. But many kids don't know the Goodall story and will love this chance to hit the ground in Tanzania and learn about the remarkable scientist and her beloved chimp friends. With dozens of vintage photographs, Goodall recounts her early research in Gombe National Park, including a recap of her childhood and how she came to know Louis Leakey and first enter the bush. With clear and careful prose, Goodall explains her findings about chimp communities and communication, the role of hierarchies, and what sort of threats chimpanzees face today. Best of all, Goodall's account always keeps curious young readers in mind, even relating some of her mistakes, such as when she became too close to her subjects and interfered with her own research.

Young protoscientists will appreciate Goodall's frank descriptions, from kerosene-can-assisted dominance displays to her discovery that chimps engage in hunting and warlike behaviors, and hopefully, such detail will inspire further interest in the future of chimpanzees and other threatened species. Proceeds from the book will go to Roots & Shoots, a "grassroots environmental and humanitarian education program for young people" under the Jane Goodall Institute. Because "hundreds of roots and shoots--young people like you--around the globe can break through and make the world a better place for all living things." (Ages 4 to 8) --Paul Hughes

My little girl loves it! 4 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

My six year old daughter loves animals, especially wild ones. She has been fascinated with Alaska and with wolves for some time now, although (or perhaps because) we live in a large city. She wasn't initially attracted to this book because it isn't very beautiful, but she was captivated by the accounts of real wolves in their natural surroundings. There are many books that relate the nasty side of wolves, and there are some that attempt to undo the damage of the myths of fear; but to read about how wolves really live (and to acknowledge their mystery) is the best for my young wildlife lover.

Editorial Review:

Illus. in full color. A fascinating introduction to the world of wolves, one of nature's most enduring and misunderstood creatures. Wolf-pack behavior, body language, and the meaning of howls are all demystified in this natural history.

FIRR-Kids! Review 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Beavers, badgers and elk, oh my! You'll learn about Yellowstone National Park, and will also discover you have acquired a stunning collection of nature photographs. This father-daughter photography team resides on the border of the park, which really shines through in their work.

The author gives a brief explanation of Yellowstone as a national park before she launches into the history of the animals, which is the true focus of the book. She explains how Yellowstone has a very complex natural system, the circumstances that progressively occurred, and their effect on the animals. It's interesting to learn why one animal thrives, while another animal languishes.

The author does a good job giving the right amount of details - enough to be informative but not overly complicated. Younger readers can enjoy the animal and scenery photos, while older readers can easily follow the narration. If you have a nature lover, I would absolutely recommend this book.

Editorial Review:

Yellowstone National Park’s majestic geologic wonders and remarkable wildlife draw millions of visitors each year. But there was a time when these natural treasures were in great danger, all because after years of unrestricted hunting, one key piece of the puzzle had been eliminated—the wolf.

Now, more than a decade after scientists realized the wolves’ essential role and returned them to Yellowstone, the park’s natural balance is gradually being restored. The informative dual-level text and spectacular full-color photographs show the wolves in the natural habitat that was almost lost without them. Readers of all ages will be inspired by the delicate natural system that is Yellowstone.
