What Do You Do When Something wants to Eat You? 5 out of 5 stars.

Jenkins, Steve. What Do You Do When Something Wants To Eat You?
Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1997.
Experience the roller coaster ride of intrigue and escape as the vibrant pages of this book come to life with each new danger. As the title suggests, this book explores many interesting and unusual ways that equally interesting and unusual animals avoid becoming a predator's dinner. The Basilisk Lizard, for example, narrowly escapes the beak of a vicious-looking heron by running across the water's surface. This unique talent has earned it the nickname "Jesus Christ Lizard" in his native country of South America. Other animals featured in this selection are the puffer fish, the blue-tongued skink, and the hog-nosed snake. The textured, vividly colorful, and eye-catching illustrations compliment the story as each of the fourteen predators face off against their potential prey. Parents will like that the book is educational, and children will find it entertaining. Although intended for children, this book is for anyone from age 4 to 104 who enjoys learning about animals.

Editorial Review:

What would you do if something wanted to eat you? Walk on water? Stick out your tongue? Play dead? Animals in the wild use all kinds of methods to protect themselves from their enemies. Using dynamic and intricate cut-paper collages, Steve Jenkins explores the many fascinating and unique defense mechanisms creatures use to escape from danger.

Evan's Review 5 out of 5 stars.

I liked learning about the cane toad and the harpy eagle. I liked them because the cane toad can swallow a snake and the harpy eagle can swallow things bigger than itself. I liked the book because it had alot of information about animals that do gross things. This book is cool!

eww, I never knew that! 5 out of 5 stars.

Gross Out! is not a misnomer. You'll learn all kinds of gross and disgusting -- but fascinating! -- facts about the animal world. I'll admit my daughter doesn't find this as appealing as Freak Out!, Clarke's earlier book in the series, but she did like learning about the different things animals do for survival.

Kids Love It!!! 4 out of 5 stars.

I work with struggling readers and have difficulty finding books with very high interest and low reading level. This book worked like a charm for my students. They were devouring it and even asked if they could borrow one of my classroom set books to take home after we finished reading it. The recipe at the end is also a great lesson for following directions!!!

Editorial Review:

Did you know that the horned lizard squirts blood out of its eyes to scare off predators? Learn more about this creature as well as the leech, the naked mole rat, the hagfish, and many more creepy critters in this sickening and super science book. Not for the faint of heart, this revolting reader will be a favorite among boys and everyone interested in the strange and unusual!

simple, edited and effective 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a deceptively simple, refined animal sound book. The pictures are not stylized but old fashioned, imperfect, kind of abstract and pleasant to look at. The colors are traditional but pleasant. It doesn't try to be more and that is why we love it.

Well made, sturdy, indestructible for drooling one year olds, too (book construction and quality material are considerations for this age group)

Best Animal Book 5 out of 5 stars.

This was the first book I ever bought for my first child 14 years ago. It quickly became a family favorite and has since been through 5 children. It is falling apart, finally, so I've been looking for a good animal book to replace it whenever I'm in a bookstore. But so far, I have not found one that I like anywhere near as well as this one. It finally occurred to me to look on Amazon for the same book, and I was thrilled to find that it is still available.

What does the crow say? Caw! Caw!
The donkey says hee-haw, hee-haw!
The cow says moo-o-o-o-o! What do the owls say? Whoo-o-o-o-o!

Children will love imitating the sounds each of the animals, birds, and insects make in this colorfully illustrated sturdy board book.

Editorial Review:

This work is for ages 6-12. Hibernation is one of nature's greatest miracles, allowing animals to sleep through periods of extreme cold (and heat). From the tundra to the desert, this ability enables animals to live in some of Earth's harshest climates. Full-colour photographs and vivid text combine to give children a view of the many different ways that animals "sleep it off". Highlights include: how an animal's body uses fat to survive and even wake itself up; how an animal finds and prepares its den for hibernation; animals that estivate, or hibernate to escape heat; animals that give birth and care for their young during hibernation.

One of the stronger Eyewitness books 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

For those who are new to the Eyewitness format, it consists of thematically arranged two-page spreads of brilliant photographs on a white background. There is an intro paragraph in the upper left-hand corner, but most of the text is in the captions that go with the photographs. Generally, the biological sciences titles are the strongest in this series, since other topics often need a more organized progression of topics. You'll get a lot of information out of these books, but you won't get a systematic anaylsis.

This is an especially good book. The organization works well for the topic, and there is a great deal of in-depth information not normally covered even in high school-level biology books. Great for any child interested in amphibians!

I ENJOY THIS ONE BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY THE KIDS DO TOO 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This is not a bad beginning reader and it is full of very fascintating information about sharks and shark life. The illustrations are quite good and of course hold the children's interest from cover to cover. The text is simple and quite easy to follow and understand. I can see why there might be some concerns over portions of the book. Yes, the book dose address the fact that sharks, for the most part, are preditors and I can see why the illustrations might upset some (although I feel it will probably the adults rather than the children who will be upset. Kids are so pragmatic these days about such things). I also have to agree to parts of the one negative review this book received in that I too felt the author was being a bit cavalier as to the probability of the survival of sharks all over the world. As the reviewer pointed out, this is one animal that is quickly getting into trouble in a big way. Perhaps I would have liked to have seen a bit more on the necessity of keeping these wonderful creatures with us. Overall though, I find the book to be quite useful and as I pointed out, the kids all love it.

Editorial Review:

Illus. in full color. "This introduction to sharks keeps within a first-grade reading level without sacrificing information. Cole tells about different kinds of sharks, and facts on their food consumption and innumerable teeth. The text makes clear that few sharks eat people and that sharks come in a variety of shapes and sizes."--Booklist.

Good for Children 3 out of 5 stars.

The book is geared for the young reader which I didn't expect. The scope was pretty limited.

Better than others we've checked out... 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

My kids (aged 5 and 2) found this book to be pretty good. It has more animal examples and more pictures of the scats than other similar kids' guides we bought. It also classifies the animals by the territory in which they live (forest animals, field animals, etc.). Good choice for fellow animal trackers!

Editorial Review:

Become a nature detective with this illustrative, engaging and fun Take-Along-Guide. You may not know where to look, or what to look for, but animal signs are everywhere and this guide will help you learn how to read them. You'll learn how to spot and identify common clues that 17 wildlife species leave behind in the woods, in the fields and along ponds.

Editorial Review:

Combining rich historical detail and a harrowing, pulse-pounding narrative, Close to Shore brilliantly re-creates the summer of 1916, when a rogue Great White shark attacked swimmers along the New Jersey shore, triggering mass hysteria and launching the most extensive shark hunt in history.

During the summer before the United States entered World War I, when ocean swimming was just becoming popular and luxurious Jersey Shore resorts were thriving as a chic playland for an opulent yet still innocent era's new leisure class, Americans were abruptly introduced to the terror of sharks. In July 1916 a lone Great White left its usual deep-ocean habitat and headed in the direction of the New Jersey shoreline. There, near the towns of Beach Haven and Spring Lake-and, incredibly, a farming community eleven miles inland-the most ferocious and unpredictable of predators began a deadly rampage: the first shark attacks on swimmers in U.S. history.

For Americans celebrating an astoundingly prosperous epoch much like our own, fueled by the wizardry of revolutionary inventions, the arrival of this violent predator symbolized the limits of mankind's power against nature.

Interweaving a vivid portrait of the era and meticulously drawn characters with chilling accounts of the shark's five attacks and the frenzied hunt that ensued, Michael Capuzzo has created a nonfiction historical thriller with the texture of Ragtime and the tension of Jaws. From the unnerving inevitability of the first attack on the esteemed son of a prosperous Philadelphia physician to the spine-tingling moment when a farm boy swimming in Matawan Creek feels the sandpaper-like skin of the passing shark, Close to Shore is an undeniably gripping saga.

Heightening the drama are stories of the resulting panic in the citizenry, press and politicians, and of colorful personalities such as Herman Oelrichs, a flamboyant millionaire who made a bet that a shark was no match for a man (and set out to prove it); Museum of Natural History ichthyologist John Treadwell Nichols, faced with the challenge of stopping a mythic sea creature about which little was known; and, most memorable, the rogue Great White itself moving through a world that couldn't conceive of either its destructive power or its moral right to destroy.

Scrupulously researched and superbly written, Close to Shore brings to life a breathtaking, pivotal moment in American history. Masterfully written and suffused with fascinating period detail and insights into the science and behavior of sharks, Close to Shore recounts a breathtaking, pivotal moment in American history with startling immediacy.

A Nest Full of Eggs 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

My 5 year old son and I found this to be a very enjoyable book. I appreciate this book because it is so informative, yet reads more like a story than a textbook. The story begins in the Spring as the robin builds her nest and lays her eggs. It continues as the eggs hatch, and the birds grow up. The story closes as the birds leave in late September and explains that they will return the next Spring. I feel this "Full Circle" approach is very helpful to young learners. All throughout the book this story uses new words for children to learn and very naturally weaves the definitions into the story. The illustrations are a tremendous asset as they help to reinforce the new words. There are several processes shown step by step such as the development within an egg and the building of a nest. They are clearly and delightfully explained and also very well illustrated. I sometimes come across a children's book that captures my attention, yet fails to interest my son. What value does such a book have it it fails to reach the audience it was written for? I find this is not the problem with "A Nest Full of Eggs" as it is entertaining for both adults and children, while having the substance adults would like to teach to children. It is written for children yet does not talk down to them. This book is a part of a larger series called,"Let's read and Find out Science". I have also enjoyed reading others in the series and would highly recommend investigating this series.

Editorial Review:

The first robins of spring carefully fill a nest with beautiful blue eggs. This delightful book clearly explains how birds develop, how the parents care for their young, and just what's happening inside that pretty blue egg. Full-color.

Mommy, why is that frog red? 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

A cool natural history book, geared for slightly older kids... Jenkins groups wildly different animals by color -- blue dart frogs along with hyacinth macaws and blue-tailed skinks, etc. -- and explains how each animal uses their distinctive coloring as an adaptive or defensive trait. There's a lot of tooth-and-claw action here: most of this stuff has to do either with killing prey, avoiding being eaten, or finding a mate. There's also a lot of text -- each of the dozens of animals being profiled gets a little explanatory paragraph next to their picture. The artwork is beautiful (if you like this book, you might also want to check out Jenkins' earlier work, "Biggest, Strongest, Fastest") and there's tons of great zoological information. Just the thing for a budding naturalist to pore over for years to come. (ReadThatAgain!)

Editorial Review:

Red, blue, yellow, green, orange, purple, pink—animals can be startlingly colorful. Why are they found in so many shades, tints, and hues? Living Color explores a range of animals from old favorites like the pink flamingo to rare and fascinating creatures such as the long-wattled umbrella bird and the ringed caecilian. How do the brilliant feathers, scales, shells, and skin of these animals help them survive? Find out in this strikingly beautiful book how animals use color to warn predators, signal friends, attract a mate, or hide from their enemies.
