Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is the great transitional novel in the series. The first books have action and interesting plot twists, but the tone changes in this book. In the previous books, when Harry Potter wins a battle (aka the conclusion of a book), the reader experiences a feeling that everything is all right and will be right. However, throughout this book and into the next ones, the confident feeling that Harry will survive and defeat Voldemort and restore the peaceful, jovial magical world we knew in the first books is challenged. The changes in Harry's character do not inspire confidence either. The character we embraced and grew with is becoming a snotty, arrogant idiot. I found myself questioning whether the world Harry lives in will ever be the same even if Voldemort is defeated.

This is a great book and the beginning of the action that makes this series one of the best I have ever read. I recommend it to all.

Editorial Review:

The book that took the world by storm....In his fifth year at Hogwart's, Harry faces challenges at every turn, from the dark threat of He-Who-Must-Not-Be- Named and the unreliability of the government of the magical world to the rise of Ron Weasley as the keeper of the Gryffindor Quidditch Team. Along the way he learns about the strength of his friends, the fierceness of his enemies, and the meaning of sacrifice.

we took this set of books to our grandson in Israel (10 years old) and he read them all before our visit was over and we were there for 10 days! He couldn't put them down and now I have ordered the next set for when they come out in September. Thank you for making these so interesting that a 10 year old wants to read every waking hour!

Thrills, Chills, Ill Wills & The Wiz Kids' Sleuthing Skills 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

A wonderful sequel to "Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone". The first book introduced the reader to the world of wizardry. While Ms. Rowling's debut work was filled with wonderment, suspense and gee-whiz fun, the second installment is a little darker. It also answers a few questions which remained dangling at the end of The Sorcerer's Stone. In addition, colorful, new characters are introduced; some of the familiar characters are fleshed out more; and fresh mysteries pertaining to the whole Hogwarts' realm make this book an extremely entertaining read for all ages. Read the books in sequence and enjoy the ride. My guess is that Ms. Rowling's series still will be popular long after all of us are dead and buried.

Step 2 in a 7 step program 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

After reading the first book and diving headfirst into this one (like I did) you notice how the story itself is so well put together because it's like there was never a seperation. This starts where book 1 left off. And unlike book 1, where you can tell the main focus of the story was to develop who it is you're reading about and get planted into their lives, this book begins the slow yet ultimately satisfying dark plunge that the series as a whole is going to take.

During and after reading this you will come to understand that the rollercoaster of friendship, magic, prophacies, and ressurecting evil wizards is shaping up to be one hell of a ride.

Editorial Review:

If any comic has a claim to have truly reinvigorated the genre, then The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller--known also for his excellent Sin City series and his superb rendering of the blind superhero Daredevil--is probably the top contender. Batman represented all that was wrong in comics and Miller set himself a tough task taking on the camp crusader and turning this laughable, innocuous children's cartoon character into a hero for our times. The great Alan Moore (V for Vendetta, Swamp Thing, the arguably peerless Watchmen) argued that only someone of Miller's stature could have done this. Batman is a character known well beyond the confines of the comic world (as are his retinue) and so reinventing him, while keeping his limiting core essentials intact, was a huge task.Miller went far beyond the call of duty. The Dark Knight is a success on every level. Firstly it does keep the core elements of the Batman myth intact, with Robin, Alfred the butler, Commissioner Gordon, and the old roster of villains, present yet brilliantly subverted. Secondly the artwork is fantastic--detailed, sometimes claustrophobic, psychotic. Lastly it's a great story: Gotham City is a hell on earth, street gangs roam but there are no heroes. Decay is ubiquitous. Where is a hero to save Gotham? It is 10 years since the last recorded sighting of the Batman. And things have got worse than ever. Bruce Wayne is close to being a broken man but something is keeping him sane: the need to see change and the belief that he can orchestrate some of that change. Batman is back. The Dark Knight has returned. Awesome. --Mark Thwaite

Disappointing 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Although I had given the first HP book to a nephew the year it was published, I waited to purchase and read the books until (1) my son was old enough and (2) the series was finished and I could get matching hard copies. A friend ordered this for me through her library connections. It took ages to arrive; forunately for me, I had no idea the box was supposed to be wooden, so I was not initially disappointed by that. However, now that we've begun reading them (my son could easily read them himself but I still read to him at bedtime, and it's really fun to discover Harry's world along with him), I was stunned and insulted to discover that the prose had been tampered with, dumbed down and 'Americanized' for stupid Yanks. I am an American but I know what a packet of crisps is, and when 'chips' has been substituted for 'crisps,' among other things. So now, having spent over $100 for this set, I am going to have to spend more to get the REAL thing. How disappointing. What on earth were the people at Scholastic thinking?! Moreover, why did JK Rowling allow them to do this? I cannot fathom any reason why perfectly ordinary English should have to be changed. Or is it that we really are that stupid, insular, and arrogant that we cannot even read English from other English speaking countries anymore? I am truly sorry that my son will have to read a watered down, adulterated version of these classic stories. What a letdown.

I am ambivalent about the whole series 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I am a bit ambivalent about this series. On the one hand I completely disagree with those reviewers that complain that this book sets bad behavioral standards. Common! If your child needs to be reminded that we do not punch friends that call us names, you are in trouble. Don't blame the book. This is something we covered early in preschool. But we all feel like doing this from time to time. So, it is easy to identify with Junie B. and laugh about her and with her. Some moral lessons of the series are neat. I liked the one about Job Day, where all kids wanted to be somebody "rich and famous", while Junie B. decided to become a janitor, because janitors save people and paint and unlock things.

However, I am somewhat concerned about the language. The language used in this book is persistently grammatically incorrect (e. g. "bited","it was very too big", "worser", "I quick run...", and worst of all "Me and my friend.."). The intention is to make Junie B. sound like a real kid, but I think Ms. Park is overdoing it a bit. In any case, i am sure that if your child reads just a few of these books it will not ruin their grammar, but if they get really hooked up on them and read the entire series, some language damage control might become necessary. In any case, my daughter seems to filter all this wrong language, and reads the words as they should be and not the way they appear...

I just wish there was a series out there, that would have nice real life stories, funny and not preachy, written in a good grammatical language.

Goblet Gives Gryffindor Gang Great Gobs of Guesswork, Goosebumps 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Ms. Rowling apparently had a lot to say in this next installment of the series. Coming in at nearly twice the length of the previous story, the bulkiness does not detract from the good, solid storytelling. The author seamlessly brings new readers up to date in the life of Harry Potter by interjecting, throughout the book, facts from the previous three books. However, you will not truly appreciate the development of this wonderful wizardly world without reading them in sequence. Other reviewers have felt the need to list their favorites in this series, but the exercise is unnecessary. The first four books were very fun and easy reads. This stuff isn't meant to be Shakespeare, folks. Many, many adults and kids have gushed to me about how much they enjoyed all seven novels. Nothing in Ms. Rowling's books have soured me from soon reading the fifth installment. Sit back, relax and enjoy.

you should read this book because.... 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is great. It has very descriptive words and it is action packed with a lot of drama. This is my favorite Harry Potter book so far. In general, Harry Potter books are the best for me. Harry finds a romance, but sadly it may not go so well. The book is fantastic. At the end, something interesting happens, and I won't tell you what, so read the book.

Editorial Review:

Journeys to the end of the world, fantastic creatures, and epic battles between good and evil -- what more could any reader ask for in one book? The book that has it all is The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, written in 1949 by Clive Staples Lewis. But Lewis did not stop there. Six more books followed, and together they became known as The Chronicles of Narnia.

For the past fifty years, The Chronicles of Narnia have transcended the fantasy genre to become part of the canon of classic literature. Each of the seven books is a masterpiece, drawing the reader into a land where magic meets reality, and the result is a fictional world whose scope has fascinated generations.

This edition presents all seven books -- unabridged -- in one impressive volume. The books are presented here according to Lewis' preferred order, each chapter graced with an illustration by the original artist, Pauline Baynes. Deceptively simple and direct, The Chronicles of Narnia continue to captivate fans with adventures, characters, and truths that speak to readers of all ages, even fifty years after they were first published.

Fun Books 4 out of 5 stars.

I purchased these books for my eight year old daughter. We read all of them already. She loved them, and so did I. I was a little disappointed that there were no pictures at all. In the older version, there were some very beautiful pictures that helped bring understanding to some of the concepts of being a pioneer. Overall, this was a great purchase.

Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder is a whole series of books about a girl named Laura Ingalls Wilder. The books talk about some of the hardships Laura and her family faced. These books also tell about every thing that happened in her life from Wisconsin all the way to Kansas. The story of her life starts as a young girl and talks about her getting married as a young lady. The books tell how she changed and some of the places she went and even some of the people she met.
I like these books because the way these books were written because they were written so you fell like you are actually there. I also like these books because they tell what people had to go through in the 1800's. I read all these books and I liked them. If you read them you will like them too.

Editorial Review:

The original nine Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, featuring their fresh new photographic look, are available together in an attractive box set, just in time for the 75th Anniversary!
