THE TALE OF A VERY PUSHY MOUSE! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is the first offering of a wonderfully delightful series of like stories for children. If You Give a Mouse A Cookie by Laura Joffe Numeroff and illustrated by Felicia Bond tell the story, and the problems you might run into, if you should happen to give a overly active and demanding mouse a cookie. The story begins with a young boy innocently setting by his sidewalk in front of his house. A hungry mouse comes along and the problems begin.

This is a progressive type of tale, where one act of generosity keeps growing and growing. "If you give a mouse a cookie, he's going to ask for a glass of milk. When you give him milk, he'll probably ask you for a straw. When you give him a straw, he will ask........." And it goes on and on and on until the poor kid pretty well has a completely trashed house and is exhausted trying to fulfill the escalating requests and the subsequent mess the requests ultimately cause. A pushy mouse and cookies, we find, are not a good combination!

The text is delightfully simple and keeps you turning the pages, page after page. You actually find you self wanting to see what the little rodent is going to ask for next. The story is simple and there is no bang, bang, crash crunch plot nor ending. The only problem I find in this aspect is that in this day and age, I find some children (and even more adults), who have the attention span of ferrets on coffee and if the story is in the least bit mellow, their minds simply cannot track. This is a minor problem though, if it is indeed a problem.

The art work by Felicia Bond is quite well done and goes perfectly with the text. The pictures are simple to understand, cute and quite eye catching. I liked them.

This is one of in a series of books by this team. Others include If you give a Moose a Muffin, If you give a Pig a Pancake, If you take a Mouse to the Movies, If you take a Mouse to School and If you give a Pig a Party. All are as well done. I have noted in reading this book and others in the series that the kids love them and will always ask for repeat readings.

Editorial Review:

This is a best selling book by Felicia Bond and Laura Numeroff. This is the story of the consequences of giving a cookie to an energetic mouse that runs the host ragged, but young readers will come away smiling at the antics that tumble like dominoes through the pages of this delightful picture book.

Will thrill Warriors fans with its trademark thrilling adventures and warm emotions 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Jaypaw remembers experiencing the presence of ancient cat warriors near him at Moonpool and attempts to speak with them again. The young warrior apprentice suspects that the ancient warriors could enlighten him, explaining the prophecy he heard in Firestar's dream: "There will be three, kin of your kin, who will hold the power of the stars in the paw." But, alas, the ancient warriors do not respond to Jaypaw's entreaties.

Now, though, Jaypaw must find herbs for his medicine cat mentor, Leafpool. He complies, but it's obvious that his mind is not on his job, and he inadvertently frightens away a thrush being stalked by warrior apprentices. Meanwhile, his brother, Lionpaw, wishes that it was time for his assessment as a warrior; he's tired of being just a warrior apprentice. On the other hand, Jaypaw knows he will not be a true medicine cat until Leafpool dies --- and he would never wish for that.

Hollypaw is distracted by thoughts that someday the Clan may expect her to find a mate and have kits. She knows she's not ready for those kinds of responsibilities, especially since she mostly wants to put her energy toward being an excellent warrior. In fact, her true secret ambition is to be Clan leader, and she definitely can't imagine combining that position with motherhood. As she ponders her future, Hollypaw is fascinated with the tales that Brook tells of growing up in the Tribe of Rushing Water. Hollypaw wishes she could visit Brook's tribe, but is sure she will never travel to the far distant mountains in which they make their home.

When Jaypaw at last is able to communicate with Rock, one of the ancient cats, he doesn't get the clear-cut answers about his destiny that he seeks. However, he learns from others that the Tribe of Rushing Water is in peril --- and he knows that somehow this will affect his future. Lionpaw is also hearing tales of the Tribe of Rushing Water mountain home, from Stormfur. He longs to explore the area, knowing that he's seen only a very small part of what the world has to offer.

When strange cats approach ThunderClan, Brook knows them. They are Tribe of Rushing Water warriors Talon and Night. The two strangers request Stormfur and Brook's return to the mountains, to help save the Tribe. When ThunderClan rallies to help, Lionpaw, Jaypaw and Hollypaw are determined to go as well. When Firestar finally agrees, they are thrilled. But they have no way to guess the perils and the rewards they'll encounter on their quest.

OUTCAST will thrill Warriors fans with its trademark thrilling adventures and warm emotions as Lionpaw, Jaypaw and Hollypaw continue to grow and change through tough challenges and interactions with others. Readers will count the days until the next epic and entertaining Power of Three installment is available.

There will be three,
Kin of you kin....
Who hold the
Power of the stars
In their paws.

A secret prophecy shapes the lives of Firestar's grandchildren, but only one of the three knows about it. Jaypaw is captivated by the power it promises, and he believes the key to that power may lie buried in the distant past -- with the ancient cats who once walked these woods and now prowl through his dreams. His search for answers leads him toward the mountains -- the home of the Tribe of Rushing Water. Lionpaw and Hollypaw feel drawn to the mountains too, for different reasons.

But the mountains hide secrets as well as answers, and if the three cats find a way to get there, they may discover more than they ever expected.

My, almost three, twin grandsons and I, spend many fun times looking for the objects in this book. They get so excited when they find something asked for! My 5 older grandchildren always loved all of the I Spy books too.

Hours of fun and a new Christmas tradition. 5 out of 5 stars.

Sit cozy in your recliner under an afghan and explore this gorgeous book with the little person in your life. So much to look at and search for. The I Spy books are all fun and this one is particularly well done. Children get so excited when they spot the items listed to search for...and find so many more interesting things along the way! All these books hold their attention, stimulate minds, and promote conversation! No batteries required, does not make electronic sounds, does not plug in.

A fun book for the family to do together. 5 out of 5 stars.

The I Spy books are fun books to read and do with your children. This book is no exception. It's not too hard for the younger children or too easy for the older ones (adults included).

Editorial Review:

A photographic puzzle book features rhyming riddles that invite young readers to locate hidden objects--clocks, nickels, pickles, frogs, and others--among double-page spreads filled with holiday delights.

A Piece of Literature in Time 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

A Wrinkle in Time, by Madeleine L'Engle, is a book that I've read twice but completely loved. It is a story that has very advanced concepts for the early 1960's but is something that anyone could like. Meg Murry is a normal teenage girl: she has braces and looks normal. She doesn't do that well in school but is smart at home. On the other hand, her brother, Charles Wallace, is an all around genius. His age is five and understands most things a five year old couldn't. Meg and Charles Wallace meet a boy named Calvin, who is a friendly boy around Meg's age, around two years older, and all three of them hit it off, Meg a little slower than Charles Wallace. On a stormy night, a bizarre lady comes in and tells them random things.
Over the course of the book, Meg, Calvin, and Charles Wallace are all pulled into a fantasy world with different galaxies, "wrinkling", and different planets. This is all for Mr. Murry, who went missing a few years prior to this point in time. Overall, it was a satisfying book.

Editorial Review:

It was a dark and stormy night; Meg Murry, her small brother Charles Wallace, and her mother had come down to the kitchen for a midnight snack when they were upset by the arrival of a most disturbing stranger.

"Wild nights are my glory," the unearthly stranger told them. "I just got caught in a downdraft and blown off course. Let me sit down for a moment, and then I'll be on my way. Speaking of ways, by the way, there is such a thing as a tesseract."

A tesseract (in case the reader doesn't know) is a wrinkle in time. To tell more would rob the reader of the enjoyment of Miss L'Engle's unusual book. A Wrinkle in Time, winner of the Newbery Medal in 1963, is the story of the adventures in space and time of Meg, Charles Wallace, and Calvin O'Keefe (athlete, student, and one of the most popular boys in high school). They are in search of Meg's father, a scientist who disappeared while engaged in secret work for the government on the tesseract problem.

I first met these Junie B. Jones books when tutoring elementary school students, They horrified me. When a book is presented to a child she assumes as she/he has every right to do, that these books are worthwhile. These books though, are filled with serious grammatical errors, poor punctuation, wrong spelling and slang. Sentence fragments abound in astonishing quantities, confusion in the correct use of parts of speech shows up repeatedly, mixing objects and subjects occurs again and again, and misspellings pop up. Stylistically also, the writing presents a poor example for young students to follow. A large proportion of the sentences commence with 'And', while the majority of paragraphs contain no more than one sentence each. The writing is choppy in a misguided effort to simplify the language, but the result of having sentence fragment after sentence fragment ends up confusing meaning. Do not use these books for children whose primary language is not English. Do not use them if you want your students of any origin to learn how to write well and read well-crafted prose. The presentation of a book to a child is a serious matter, for as you do it, the child assumes you are presenting something good, of which you and the school approve. They believe that they can safely emulate the kind of writing they read there. Excellent books throng in the market which commit none of the grammatical offenses of the Junie B. Jones books, and yet are funny and light-hearted, with delightful characters.Junie B. herself is depicted as an abusive young lady, happy to treat acquaintances and even friends and family with offensive dismissal and verbal abuse. She's never given any consequences for these behaviours. I personally do not like the example Junie B. sets, but it is the murder of the English tongue that I cannot bear. Books of this low standard are why neither Johnnie nor Junie can write.

Editorial Review:

Childrens classic adventure novel The Lions Paw, one of the most sought after out-of-print books of all time is back in print through the self-publishing efforts of the authors family. The Lions Paw is the first of a series of books written by popular childrens novelist Robb White to be published by the familys own publishing imprint, A.W. INK, Inc. The Lion's Paw, originally published in hardcover by Doubleday in 1946 and in paperback by Scholastic in 1954, has been out of print for many years. Copies of the Doubleday and Scholastic editions go for hundreds of dollars on eBay, Alibris and other rare book selling websites, and The Lion's Paw has been listed as one of the Top 10 Most Sought After Out-of-Print Books year after year by Bookfinder.com. Robb Whites widow, Annie White said, reintroducing The Lions Paw to generations of old and new readers is a celebration of love for our family and we hope to see the book back in school libraries and public libraries across the country. Annie White said, my daughter, Leslie and I receive mail daily from many readers who proclaim The Lions Paw to be their favorite book ever!

This book set is great for my 15 month old to carry around. We read a book, put it back and he loves to carry it around, with the other set of Curious George board books we got him. He feels like a big boy when he brings his box of books to us.

Editorial Review:

Curious George, the beguiling little monkey, is one of the most beloved of all children"s book characters. Now this collection of four board books featuring Curious George is available in a sturdy, reusable, carry-along box. Brightly colored and suitably scaled for the youngest readers, the books feature art from the original storybooks by H. A. Rey.

Editorial Review:

For most children, summer vacation is something to look forward to. But not for our 13-year-old hero, who's forced to spend his summers with an aunt, uncle, and cousin who detest him. The third book in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series catapults into action when the young wizard "accidentally" causes the Dursleys' dreadful visitor Aunt Marge to inflate like a monstrous balloon and drift up to the ceiling. Fearing punishment from Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon (and from officials at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry who strictly forbid students to cast spells in the nonmagic world of Muggles), Harry lunges out into the darkness with his heavy trunk and his owl Hedwig.

As it turns out, Harry isn't punished at all for his errant wizardry. Instead he is mysteriously rescued from his Muggle neighborhood and whisked off in a triple-decker, violently purple bus to spend the remaining weeks of summer in a friendly inn called the Leaky Cauldron. What Harry has to face as he begins his third year at Hogwarts explains why the officials let him off easily. It seems that Sirius Black--an escaped convict from the prison of Azkaban--is on the loose. Not only that, but he's after Harry Potter. But why? And why do the Dementors, the guards hired to protect him, chill Harry's very heart when others are unaffected? Once again, Rowling has created a mystery that will have children and adults cheering, not to mention standing in line for her next book. Fortunately, there are four more in the works. Editorial Review:

No melting allowed! Jaclyn used to live with her aunt Greta in Chicago. But not anymore. They've moved to a place called Sherpia. It's a tiny village on the edge of the Arctic Circle. Jaclyn can't believe she's stuck out in Nowheresville. No movie theaters. No malls. No nothing. Plus, there's something really odd about the village. At night there are strange howling noises. And in front of every house there's a snowman. A creepy snowman with a red scarf. A deep scar on his face. And a really evil smile. . . .

We purchased the Hardy Boys starter set after my 5th grade son had read the first book. He had to read a mystery book for school. He liked it so much we purchased the others.
He just finished the second book in record reading time. Even though these books were written quite some time ago, they still can appeal to kids today.

Non stop action 5 out of 5 stars.
