Little more than a Madeline Christmas card from Ludwig Bemelmans 3 out of 5 stars.

"Madeline's Christmas" was originally published as a special book insert in the 1956 Christmas edition of "McCall's" magazine (which is where a shorter version of "Madeline and the Gypsies" would appear a couple of years later). It is the shortest of Ludwig Bemelmans six Madeline books and the only one in which all of the pages have full color illustrations instead of those familiar ones that are predominantly yellow. The story seems at first like it might be a take off on "The Night Before Christmas," since it interjects the first four lines of that poem after beginning with the familiar recap of the old house covered with vines, the twelve girls, and Madeline's inevitable retort to the tiger at the zoo. But it turns out that everybody in the house, from Miss Clavel to a poor mouse, are in bed with cold. Everyone, of course, except for brave little Madeline.

Madeline is taking care of everybody, cleaning and cooking, and when a rug merchant shows up with 12 rugs to sell, she buys them so everybody in the house will not have to put their feet on the cold floor when they get out of bed. Without his rugs the merchant gets frozen and Madeline has to take care of him. By this point you are wondering why this is a Christmas story as opposed one where it is just snowy and cold, but it seems the merchant is also a magician and you know what that makes those rugs.

This is a minor Madeline story and while we finally get to see Madeline's parents, it does make you wonder why the twelve little girls are still at the house all covered with vines at Christmas time. But then it was never clear if Miss Clavel was running a boarding school or an orphanage or what, and I am afraid "Madeline's Christmas" only confuses things (I did a bit of research and discovered Bemelmans was working on the stories his mother told him about life in a convent school in Altotting). So this effort is a trifle all things considered and you will not really find anything inside the book as you find on the cover, with the Eiffel Tower done up like a Christmas tree.

Brian's winter by Gary Paulsen is great, suspenseful, intense, and enjoyable book. It is an awesome book especially if you like adventurous or survival books. In this book Brian endures many animals such as a skunk who he becomes very fond of her and names her Betty he also comes to face with wolves, deer, and the most dangerous one of them all a moose which attacked him during his hunt. Brian uses his knowledge of the wilderness to survive. He also uses his memories too help design bows, arrows, and even arrowheads. He got used too living in the wilderness so he worked on new hunting techniques. He also learned how too make his shelter more secure by packing the walls with mud making it water tight and nearly air tight. This is a great sequel to the book Hatchet. Brian is a great character considering he gives the book a lot of suspense. During the time Brian was in the woods he learned many useful things such as how to carve an animal which is a good thing considering he as improved his hunting skills. The book Brian's winter was a great book I would definitely recommend it to anyone who liked Hatchet or likes adventurous or survival books.

This is the story about the famous pig Wilbur, who was born tiny, but was saved by a little girl, Fern, and later saved by a spider named Charlotte.

Fern convinces her dad to let her take care of the tiny baby pig until he is big enough to go back into the barn. After he goes back into the barn, he still needs to be saved from being made into ham and bacon and sausage.

I loved the cozy barn life and the animals, and the relationship of Wilbur, Charlotte, Fern, Templeton, the sheep, and the geese.

I also loved the fair. I love fairs, so naturally, I loved this part of the book.

The first time I read this book was when I was thirteen. Back then, I really loved the book so much, and felt it was perfect and flawless. Since then, I saw bits and pieces of the movie when it came on tv (I'm not a tv or movie watcher).

I always knew I would eventually read the book again. I finally did. However, this time, I did not find it perfect and flawless. Although the storyline was still perfect and sweet, there were gross things in this book that did not bother me when I was thirteen. The older I get, the more sensitive I get. It's hard to believe I grew up in a farm/ranch situation and around "gross" things, but they didn't bother me back then; now I know I could never live on a farm again. That's why one star is missing; while I was reading this book, I couldn't eat or even think about eating - I'm that sensitive to "gross" things.

Two boys' review: Hollywoodesque and distracting illustrations 2 out of 5 stars.

The 5-star reviews for this book ignore the fact that Jan Brett's illustrations are Hollywoodesque and distracting from the classic poem itself. Betraying the golden rule -- If it isn't broken, don't fix it -- Brett inserts in to additional characters. Nearly a third of the book features two unnamed elves who play with the toys and generally cause havoc on the roof as Santa fills the stockings.

Instead of enhancing Clement Moore's poem, the illustrations scream for attention. The effect drowns out the lyrical quality of this classic story. Often on facing pages you are bombarded with two full-page illustrations bookended by six additional panels, three on each side. Your eyes can only skip and stutter across the pages or risk losing any semblance of a storyteller's cadence.

This book was especially disappointing because earlier during that same bedtime reading session we enjoyed Christmas Magic by Sue Stainton and illustrated by Eva Melhuish. That book is an excellent example of how the marriage of story and illustrations can work magic for children.

I wrote a 5-star review for a beautiful version of Clement Moore's The Night Before Christmas illustrated by Douglas W. Gorsline and recommend you buy that book instead. Don't give up hunting for an out-of-print copy, if necessary. Gorsline's illustrations are heartwarming and true to the original poem.

My Whole Family Loves This Book 5 out of 5 stars.

This story is delightful. We bought it because we were taking our 2.5 yr old along on a ski trip and wanted him to have a silly little story that related to the mountain and skiing (even though he's not on skis yet). Well, it is just that... and more. He's learned a lot, developed an interest in skiing (maybe next year) and always gets a good laugh out of this book! It's also fun that George seems to invent snowboarding - my husband and I got a big kick out of that and have shared the story with many adult friends (isn't everyone a Curious Geroge fan?)!
IMPORTANT: The structure of the story and the illustrations maintain the integrity of the original series!!

What an excellent book for a teen girl.(Not too young, though). I read this book when I was in school, way back when. It left such a profound effect on me that I still remember it to this day. I now work in a library and see girls checking it out all the time. We can't keep it on the shelf!!!

Everyone has their favorite version of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. Make this dramatic retelling yours. At about 2 hours, its perfect for listening in the car while running around during the holidays or on your MP3 player while putting up Christmas lights. I plan on listening to it every year from now on. Patrick Stewart gives voice to every character, including the narration, and gives the kind of performance which I have come to expect from an actor of his immense talents.

I ordered 30 copies of this Dover Thrift Edition of A Christmas Carol and used them as stocking stuffers at work.

This is a great item for the price, lower than some greeting cards, and I suspect appreciated a tad more than the usual overflow of candy around at holiday time!

I love this book! I was at my cousin's house when she had book club, and having read this many times, I forgot how great it was! Luckily, I chose to read it again, and fell in love for the second time! With characters that only Roahld Dahl himself could come up with, this book is a find. An eccentric grandmother, a curious boy, and evil creatures, this book is masterpiece. One of my favorites in the Dahl collection, thank you to the author!!!!

This story has three parts: the first - scary and gruesome, the second - funny, full of adventure and predictable, the third - warm, unexpected and full of promise and excitement.

What stays with me is the love between the grandson and the grandmother - they fully accept one another despite their differences and they enthusiastically enjoy life and each other.

The ending is left open for the imagination - not taken to a close like so much these days where nothing is left to ponder upon.

I first got turned onto Waldo books while in college. I was working at a small bookstore, and spied a paperback of Where's Waldo? in Hollywood. I've had it all these years, but recently brought it out of the basement for my 7 year old son. He was thrilled with that book, so I got him Where's Waldo?: The Wonder Book in hardback for Christmas.

While the Hollywood book is difficult, The Wonder Book also has some difficult scenes! In one, I STILL haven't found Wizard Whitebeard. Arggh!

Martin Handford is the creator of the Where's Waldo? books, which features elaborately detailed scenes, hidden objects, and visual puns. The reclusive, bespectaled author works fervently for EIGHT WEEKS for EACH of the 2-page spreads on these books. This means that the Where's Waldo Wonder Book took him 1.8 years to create! Amazing!

My son and I love to pore over the pages--not only looking for Waldo, Wenda, Wizard Whitebeard, Odlaw, and Woof--but also other clues. For example, Wenda always loses a camera, Woof a bone, the Wizard a scroll, and so on. BUT, at the end of the book, there are TWO pages of checklists for other things to find in EACH of the visual puzzles! Some are quite hard to find. For example, a clown follows Waldo and his friends all through the end of the book. One of the challenges is to find the scene in the book where the clown changes the color of his hat band.

The creative scenes you'll find in the Wonder Book include:

As with all the Waldo books, there's also some great visual puns that will tickle adult funny bones. Make no mistake...the Where's Waldo? series isn't just for kids! I love searching for the characters and items as a way of relaxing and enjoying my son's company.

The first book was an awsome action and adventure packed story, and every aspect of the second book was even better. In my opinion this book is greater than any book I have ever seen. The authors books are some of my favorites over any other author I have seen. I would recommend this book to anyone, most books I would get rather bored with, but this one seems to catch my intrest.

The main plot to the story is there is this boy, who in the previous book wound up stranded in the forest, then learned to survive in those conditions after a while. In the second book he wanted to return because he missed the woods and the way it felt to be in them. He never liked life as it was at his home, giving him more the reason to return. This was probobly the best book I have ever read, books by the same author are also just as good.
