Great Adventure Story 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Minnesota-native Gary Paulsen has been one of my favorite middle-grade and YA authors for years. I can't really remember which of his books I first read, but he's written a lot of awfully good ones. His characters are always understandable, real, and - mostly - tied to nature in some ways.

His most iconic figure is Brian Robeson, the star of HATCHET. In that book, Brian was a city kid who ended up crashing into the brush when the pilot of the plane he was in had a heart attack and died suddenly. With only a hatchet - no matches, no sleeping bag, and no supplies, Brian taught himself how to live in the wilderness. His personal growth spread over 54 days, and the book become one of the best-received middle-grade novels ever. If you haven't read it, or your child hasn't read it, you should.

BRIAN'S HUNT is the newest book in the five-volume series. Brian is 16 at the time of this novel, and he's become more certain of himself. He's out on the lakes in Canada, taking his time to get to the Cree American Indian tribe he became friends with during the course of his adventures. He's very much a loner, and has even talked his parents and school into letting him try his hand at home schooling himself.

Paulsen's attention to detail and the ways of nature may prove slow-going to most of today's young readers (unless they're already in love with the series), but you can feel the love the author has for such things. I learned a lot about fishing and hunting during the course of the book, though I intend to do neither, and I could tell my ten year old was filing away details while I read the novel to him.

However, Paulsen always delivers on the action in one of his books, and BRIAN'S HUNT is no exception. Before long, Brian wakes up to find a wounded dog looking for food and for help. Brian gives both, though those scenes are somewhat intense and carry a gross-out factor with them. The scenes are realistic, though, and very well written.

As Brian puts the puzzle of the dog's mysterious wounds together with her behavior as he hunts, it doesn't take him long to realize that the dog was mauled by a bear. Once that discovery is made, Brian learns bad news that sets him into the woods after the bear.

The details of how Brian tracks the bear, the skills and the observation necessary, are great. My son and I stayed glued to the pages, though we couldn't help taking a break every now and again to discuss some facet of hunting lore we hadn't been aware of. Although the material is mature, it's written on a level kids can easily understand it, and it's very honest. But if you have a youngster and you're thinking about letting him or her read this one, you might want to read it yourself first to make sure it meets with your approval and that it won't panic or bother your child.

I'm a big fan of Gary Paulsen's, and this book really hit the spot. At 99 pages long, it's a quick, intense read. Although Paulsen said he'd ended the Hatchet adventures after the publication of the last book, I can't help but be hopeful there will be more. Brian is starting to get interested in a girl, and I want to see how that works out for him.

Editorial Review:

Millions of readers of Hatchet, The River, Brian’s Winter, and Brian’s Return know that Brian Robeson is at home in the Canadian wilderness. He has stood up to the challenge of surviving alone in the woods. He prefers being on his own in the natural world to civilization.

When Brian finds a dog one night, a dog that is wounded and whimpering, he senses danger. The dog is badly hurt, and as Brian cares for it, he worries about his Cree friends who live north of his camp. His instincts tell him to head north, quickly. With his new companion at his side, and with a terrible, growing sense of unease, he sets out to learn what happened. He sets out on the hunt.

Little Boys Love It! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 3 people found this review helpful.

A dump truck, a lever that gets pulled not once but twice, and robbers! What a combo and George is a hero again. I hope someday that they bring this version out of print. My boys loved it and my preschool boys page through it everyday! It is also a great springboard to the other great Curious George books.

Great new story 5 out of 5 stars.

After reading the original 5 or 6 Curious George stories to my 2 year old son about a hundred times, it is refreshing to see some new adventures. We just picked up this book today after going to the dump and my son just loves it. The spirit of the original stories is still there while the artwork is slightly more crisp and detailed. I look forward to reading the other new stories!

Curious George 5 out of 5 stars.

Fun book 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My four-year-old son loves Waldo, and we've had a lot of fun looking through this book EVERY night since he got it. It's his favorite book. There's so much to look for, more than just Waldo and his stuff -- there's Wenda, Wizard Whitebeard, Odlaw, Woof and all their props, as well as 25 Waldo Watchers scattered throughout the book. From an adult perspective, the postcards aren't as much fun to read out loud, but overall I love sharing the book with my children.

I couldn't keep this book. My son lost this book from the library. Looked for this book everywhere and finally found it at Amazon! Thanks Amazon! The book was really inexpensive too!

Great fun for all. 5 out of 5 stars.

I purchased this for my five year old for Christmas. Before I could get it wrapped I was looking for Waldo! This is a great family book and really generates a lot of excitement for any age.

Waldo Review 1 5 out of 5 stars.

As all you Where's Waldo fans may know. there were only a very few of these books ever made. I for one just loved them all as a young reader. Now, years later and by shear luck, my son was given two of those old books....which he fell in love with and only wished for more. A few months later, I was again lucky and found two more in a local book store and purchased those. Leaving only two remaining....now collectors items.....these were practicly impossible to fine. After searching (what seemed like) endlessly, one day I decided to check out Amazon. To my surprise....There They Were! And at a price that I couldn't believe! And only 10 days before Christmas! I immediately made placed the order and within just a few days (less than a week at normal shipping), there they were on my doorstep. I couldn't believe it! We finally had the complete series of Wheres Waldo Books! And both books were in prefect print condition!
Thanks Amazon! And another big Thanks for helping make a little boys Christmas great!
Next time, I`ll check Amazon first!

possibly not hardcover 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I saw a box that looked just like this in my local book store listed for $45 (the list price on Amazon at the time of this comment) last night and it was just a box with the 6 softcover books inside. While I have not purchased this specific edition from Amazon and it could well be a hardcover box set, I did not purchase it from my local store as I wanted the actual books to be hardcover and it's too much to gamble on for me to try ordering this from Amazon, afraid I'll get the same set I turned down at my local store. Please mark this comment not helpful in the event that you order one and it is actually hardcover.

P.S. My son loves Waldo (as did I)

Not Free SF Reader 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 6 people found this review helpful.

A book for children, but not too bad for that. A bored girl, her brothers and others get mixed up in an adventure across the space-time continuum by way of some nifty tesseract tricks.

When a strange older woman comes visiting they set off to find the father of all these children, who is a prisoner of one of your standard supervillains, a giant disembodied telepathic brain.

Not a Fighter 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I re-read this book from my childhood and I'm very disappointed with particular messages Madeleine presents to children. I think enough has been said about stars (angels?) being conceived as witches to "play a joke" on everyone and the centaur appearance of the other "angels". No matter what the rest of the story conveys, I am completely revulsed by the notion she presents that Jesus was a fighter. He is not a fighter, but represents peace & love spreading the word of the Father on this earth for all to follow. Also, Jesus has already won the battle for us. All of these ignorant statements in this book by Madeleine need to be pulled before I will even think about looking at this book or sharing it with others.

Editorial Review:

When Charles Wallace Murry goes searching through a 'wrinkle in time' for his lost father, he finds himself on an evil planet where all life is enslaved by a huge pulsating brain known as 'It'. How Charles, his sister Meg and friend Calvin find and free his father makes this a very special and exciting mixture of fantasy and science fiction, which all the way through is dominated by the funny and mysterious trio of guardian angels known as Mrs Whatsit, Mrs Who and Mrs Which.

Something's Waiting In the Dark... 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Stay Out of the Basement is the second book in the Goosebump's series. It is also one of my favorites. Stay Out of the Basement is about the Brewer family. Dr. Brewer is a botanist who gets fired from his job because some of his expeirements went wrong. When Dr. Brewer starts working in the basement at home the family never see him. Casey and Margaret are Dr. Brewer's kids. When their mom has to go take care of her sister in Tucson, strange things start happening with their father. Then they start hearing strange sounds from the basement. Casey and Margaret go down to investigate. They could never have imagined what they found down there...

Editorial Review:

Dr. Brewer is doing a little plant-testing in his basement. Nothing to worry about. Harmless, he says. But Margaret and Casey Brewer are worried about their father. Especially when they...meet...some of the plants he is growing down there. Then they notice that their father is developing plant like tendencies. In fact, he is becoming distinctly weedy-and seedy. Is it just part of Dr. Brewer's 'harmless' experiment? Or does Dad have more than just a green thumb...?

Charming, cheerful readers for little ones 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

My kids and I came to know Little Bear through the cartoons on TV first. Perhaps part of the appeal of the books for my kids is that they know these stories well from the cartoon, but the books are much more engaging!

Best of all, unlike the cartoons, you have the amazing illustrations of Maurice Sendak. They give the books a timeless appeal.

Perfect to read to little ones, and an excellent reader for K-2.

Other titles in the Level 1 - Beginning Reading series are:

- "Father Bear Comes Home"

- "A Kiss For Little Bear"

- "Little Bear's Friend"

- "Little Bear's Visit"

Meet Little Bear, a friend to millions of children. And meet Mother Bear, who is there whenever Little Bear needs her. When it is cold and snowy outside, she finds just the right outfit for Little Bear to play in. When he goes to the moon, she has a hot lunch waiting for him on his return. At night she helps him get to sleep. And, of course, she never forgets his birthday.

This is a very fun book. I enjoyed the Waldo books when I was a preteen. The pictures teaming with people from every walks of life with lots of little stories in the greater scene.

Now my kids are old enough to begin looking for Waldo. My four year old son is very entertained by looking for Waldo. He has spent hours looking at this book.

This book you have to find the dog's tail, waldo, the thing he lost, and several Waldo watchers. It's fairly hard and yet my son still loves it.

Enjoy.

Choose the 1818 version 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Most editions of Mary Shelley's landmark book available today follow the heavily revised 1831 version. The impulse behind this trend is an honorable one (to present what is seemingly an author's "final revision"),but the 1818 version is preferable for many reasons. Looking back on her creation in later life, Shelley felt obliged to alter the book's focus in significant ways, adding what critic Marilyn Butler accurately describes as "long passages in which her main narrator, [Victor] Frankenstein, expresses religious remorse for making a creature..." The author sought to make the 1831 edition less controversial and thereby more palatable to the tastes of the reading public. The 1818 version is closer to Mary Shelley's original intentions, though it too, unfortunately, was filtered through the sensibilities of her husband, the poet Percy Shelley, who took many of his wife's rather straightforward passages and rendered them into his own more ornate and Ciceronian style. Still, the 1818 version remains more vital, more original, and less constrained by what the author believed would be acceptable to readers in 1830s England.

Editorial Review:

Presents the classic tale about a dedicated scientist exploring the very nature of life and death, leading to the creation of a creature who becomes a deadly and raging monster with superhuman strength. Reissue.

I've always been a fan of the waldo books and so when I saw that there was a new one available I jumped at the chance to buy it. Little did I know that this particular book would be filled with nothing more than [...]. I was horrified when I sat down with my son to read it. Don't let the wholesome cover fool you. These pages are filled with lewd and disturbing images. The mermaids were particularly offensive. And the Waldo that I once knew was nowhere to be found.
