Good Story 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Like the first Anne book, Anne of Green Gables, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. And though many think these books sentimental mush, I seemed to garner a lot from reading them.

They teach me to see God in new and exciting ways - to see God more in Nature and the world around me that He has created - to look for the best in all people I meet, especially those who are hard to like, ie Mrs. Rachael Lynd and Mr. Harrison. We have to learn to see past the exterior to see the person inside.

Editorial Review:

A century ago, with the publication of the classic book Anne of Green Gables, one of the most appealing heroines in children’s literature was born. Of course, fans wanted a sequel, and here it is.
When twelve-year-old Anne Shirley came to Avonlea, she quickly won everyone’s heart. Now, she’s five years older, almost a woman, and about to embark on a new adventure: becoming the teacher in her old Avonlea school. It’s an exciting year as Anne struggles to win over all her students, welcomes two new members to her family, and feels the first stirrings of love.

5+ stars for the book itself, 1 star for this edition 1 out of 5 stars.

Don't be fooled by the promise of illustrations by Mary Engelbreit. This is one of my favorite childhood books, and I bought this edition expecting illustrations by Mary Engelbreit throughout the book. The only illustration is the front cover. Do not buy this book expecting an illustrated volume.

Collectible Classic 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought this as a present for my grand-daughter. I plan to collect all of Mary Engelbreit's Classic Library. These are the books that many generations have shared for years only illustrated by one of my favorite contempory artist!

Audiobook version review 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The audiobook version of Anne of Green Gables is a complete delight. The audiobook will enable a whole new generation of children to enjoy the escapades of Anne Shirley and her incredible wit, imagination and zest for life.

I've always enjoyed the narration style of actress Kate Burton who performs many adult audiobooks. But there is something ever so slightly disappointing about the way she voices Anne Shirley. Burton has the appropriate amount of enthusiasm, drama, and wonder of Anne. However she doesn't sound young enough, but rather like an adult trying to sound young. Perhaps I'm just spoiled by Megan Follow's amazing performance in the PBS film adaptation of Anne of Green Gables, but Burton left me wishing for a performance that sounded more age-authentic.

That being said, Burton gives Marilla the perfect amount of good intentioned orneriness, and she voices Matthew with excellent balance as a tenderhearted push over. Their increasing love for Anne is likewise developed and reflected through their voices as the book progresses. Kate Burton, in my opinion, is one of the most skilled narrators in terms of pacing. She manages to speak quickly through non essential parts of the text, yet never so fast as to lose the audience. She also slows down to believable speaking tempos when voicing dialogue. Anne of Green Gables is a must have for every young-adult reader.

Editorial Review:

An eleven-year-old orphan, Anne Shirley, comes to help out on a farm on Prince Edward Island and wins the hearts of everyone at Avonlea—a story so popular that it spawned eight sequels after its initial publication in 1908, and has sold millions of copies in paperback.

LMM's most down to earth heroine 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I read this in my early teens, after I had read most of the LMM books (the Anne series, the Emily series, etc.) I loved them all, especially the Emily series, but Jane of Lantern Hill is my favorite of them all. Jane Stuart is not, as many of LMM's other heroines are, obsessed with the idea of being a writer, storyteller, etc. There is no potential boyfriend/husband lurking in the story either. This book is more about the how understanding and love can transform an introverted, unhappy child into a confident, intelligent girl (the story ends when Jane is about age 14.) In that sense she's really one of the most understandable and likeable of LMM's heroines. She is also very modern. You can easily imagine her growing up to become a successful career woman, something you can't really say for many of LMM's other heroines, other than the at-home and time-flexible occupation of writing. If I had an early-teen daughter I would buy this book for her, especially if she has any self-confidence issues.

This is also one of the few books that deals with the subject of divorce or the separation of parents from the perspective of the child in an intelligent way. Given the time that it was written, divorce was a horrible taboo, and the resolution of the story is a bit unrealistic perhaps. That's the only quibble I have with the book.

Incidentally there was a television movie based on this book, by the same people who did the excellent Anne of Green Gables series (at least, the first two parts of that series were excellent). Don't bother with the Jane movie if you love the book..it only vaguely resembles it.

Editorial Review:

Elsdon Smith begins this work with a discussion of the development of hereditary surnames and then he divides his subject into six broad categories: Classification of Surnames, Surnames from Father's Name (patronymics), Surnames from Occupation or Office, Surnames from Description or Action (nicknames), Surnames from Places, and Surnames Not Properly Included Elsewhere. In these areas he expounds on such subjects as abbreviated names, surnames derived from animals, changes of names by immigrants, ethnic names, names indicating nationality, surnames from place names, European names, Asian names, names of Blacks and Indians, surnames without vowels, surnames from Christian names, landscape names, Jewish names, surnames from history, garbled names, comic or odd names, and hyphenated names. The list is almost endless and Mr. Smith is unstinting in his explanation of the roots and meaning of these names. In addition, he provides a list of the 2,000 most common surnames in the United States today, ranked in order of frequency with an estimate of the number of persons bearing each name.
