Editorial Review:

Like all best friends, George and Martha do everything together--go to the movies, play at the beach, and just hang around not doing much of anything. No matter that they happen to be gigantic hippopotami, they learn the same lessons humans do about the ups and downs of true friendship. George and Martha teach each other (and adoring readers) that even in a close friendship, privacy is important, practical jokes can sometimes backfire, and among other things, pouring split pea soup into your loafers to spare the chef's feelings is not the best laid plan.

What's remarkable about the stories in this wonderful collection is the emotion James Marshall infuses into his understated, charming text and illustrations. Each brief tale is always humorous, never preachy, and his drawings--deceptively simple in appearance--are guaranteed to spark feelings of empathy, delight, and self-recognition. Maurice Sendak, in his foreword to this 25th anniversary compilation edition of all 35 stories, notes, "Those dear, ditzy, down-to-earth hippos bring serious pleasure to everybody, not only to children. They are time-capsule hippos who will always remind us of a paradise in publishing and--both seriously and comically--of the true, durable meaning of friendship under the best and worst conditions." (Ages 4 and up)

"It's important to sample new products" (Martha) 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

George and Martha, two hippos who are best friends have amazing adventures in this easy to read, fun to experience set of short tales.

I think, no, I'm sure that my wife likes this book more than our children do, and our children love it. There are now several quotes from this book that have become common place at our home.

One is, "It's important to sample new products."

Try this book, you'll enjoy it thoroughly. The art work appears simple, but it's appropriately wonderful to the tone and stories of these two good friends.

5 stars, no question about it.

Interesting in a very very very very good way 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a terrific book for anybody, even though its marketed as a young children's book. I love this book, (and I'm 12) and my parents and older sister, (who pretends not to) do too. This book chronicles the stories of two best friends, who just so happen to be hippos. They relate moral messages, but in a far from preachy way. The illustrations are colorful and the two hippos are shown as cute and cuddly. (awwww.... they sell these really cute George and Martha dolls somewhere) In short this is a great book for anybody. So read it!

Love this best friend series! 5 out of 5 stars.

I needed to purchase a replacement copy of George and Martha, because my older copy is very loved and falling apart. This book, as well as the others in this series, are great for teaching friendship.

Editorial Review:

Here are five stories about two of the greatest friends ever to grace a picture book. George and Martha, Jim Marshall's dearly beloved, wise, and wickedly funny hippos teach each other the importance of honesty, companionship, discretion, humility, and consolation in this classic. This CD includes the bonus track, George and Martha Back in Town.

A sly and touching book about friendship 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book, subtitled, "Five Stories About Two Best Friends," follows George and Martha, two hippopotami, through stories called "The Tightrope," "The Diary," "The Icky Story," "The Big Scare," and "The Amusement Park." The stories follow a day in the life of George and Martha and remind us how powerful friendship is and that being a good friend takes effort. Specifically, George and Martha learn the importance of unconditional support, respect for privacy, and consideration of others' feelings and also discover that practical jokes have consequences. While each story can be read separately, the final stories blend together with a surprise ending. Each story is told in five pages or less and the text is very easy for beginning readers, with common words, short sentences, fewer than ten lines per page, and large serif type. More advanced readers will continue to remain challenged by some longer words. Although the stories are brief and the language simple, Marshall uses the rhythm and phrasing of the text to create a strong emotional response and sophisticated humor. With understated narration punctuated by short (often terse) snippets of dialog, the stories are meant to be read slowly and savored, with pauses for giggles and snickering. The overall effect is dramatic, with suspenseful moments at the end of most pages. Each page of text is accompanied by an illustration and each story, as well as the book as a whole, is introduced by an illustrated, hand-lettered title page. The illustrations are cartoonish black-line drawings filled in with pink, yellow, green, and orange, with George and Martha in appropriately weighty masses of gray. The texture of the brush strokes and pencil lines is visible, emphasizing the hand-craftedness of the drawings. Both children and adults will enjoy the sly tone and touching themes of the stories.

George and Martha really Are two good friends! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

What can one say about George. Sensative and impish. Martha is just too cool for words. She can give heavy guilt without saying a word.

Terrible for young kids 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book after it was suggested by a book store employee for my 2 and 3 year old children. When I read it I was really, really disappointed. I must be the only conservative mother still out there, but I didn't like reading a story that suggests "smoking a cigar" as a way to encourage someone to stop eating sweets. What?? are you serious?? Couldn't they use an example of eating worms?? Anything but smoking!! I wasn't fond of the other four stories in the book either. I know my children are young. But I wouldn't even approve of reading this to a 13 year old.

I think there are many, many other books out there that are better for children

Martha & George: Literary Classics 5 out of 5 stars.

Cute without being lightweight, educational with being overly didactic--James Marshall pulls it off perfectly in his George & Martha series. Buy a copy (or five!) now; you won't regret it!

Editorial Review:

Another quintet of stories about the pleasures and problems of a great friendship: "The Sweet Tooth," "The Misunderstanding," "The Hypnotist," "The Special Gift," and "The Photograph."

Like this One A Lot - a review of George & Martha "Back in Town" 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

"Back in Town" is a cute book and one of our current favorites. My son (just turned 5) thinks it is absolutely hysterical. My daughter (7) likes it as well but not to the same extent -- in other words she doesn't ask for it to be read three times in a row -lol.

"Back in Town" contains 5 stories:
The Box
The High Board
The Trick
The Job
The Book

The Box is about a small box, a label that says "Don't Open", and curiosity.
The High Board is about what a friend will do to help you out.
The Trick (my son's favorite) is about turning the tables on a prankster.
The Job is about how it can be hard to command the respect of one's close friends.
The Book is about compassion and friendship.

Four Stars. Great Read-aloud. As with all George and Martha books the central theme is friendship in all it's manifestations. Artwork is cute and simple and large. With younger children be prepared to explain what's happening and what the themes are. Mr. Marshall doesn't hit you over the head with them, which has the advantage of giving a children the opportunity to deal with subtlety.

Editorial Review:

Five additional stories about the friendship between two hippos: "The Box," "The High Board," "The Trick," "The Job," "The Book."

Hippos Show the Way 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is just one in a fabulous series of books featuring George and Martha, the hippo equivalent of Nick and Nora Charles. Their light banter and misunderstandings set the stage for imaginative, humorous resolutions. The hippos' warmth and obviously mutual friendship is evident throughout. There are five stories in its 47 pages, with big simple pictures adorning every other page. A great book for early and late toddlers up to around age five or so.

SEVERAL BAD JOKES W/ ILLUSTRATIONS 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 4 people found this review helpful.

THIS BOOK JUST SEEMS LIKE A JOKE BOOK & IT'S NOT FUNNY. I WAS EXTREMELY DISSAPOINTED, ESPECIALLY AFTER ALL THE GLOWING REVIEWS. 'THE TIGER WHO CAME TO TEA' OR 'I AM NOT SLEEPY & WILL NOT GO TO BED' ARE SO MUCH BETTER- TRY ONE OF THEM INSTEAD.

Editorial Review:

In five brief episodes two hippos confirm their friendship: "The Fibber," "The Experiment," "The Picnic," "The Scary Movie!," "The Secret Club."

not like the original version 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book gets three stars but only because the two stories it contains are so good. The older version of "George & Martha" contains FIVE stories, not two. I checked this out of the library and was so disappointed! George and Martha stories are great -- short but not babyish. There are not a lot of words but they are _interesting_ words. The plots are simple enough for my 3-y old to understand but most of the stories have a little twist which makes them great for older kids too. But buy the complete stories or the original version of "George & Martha", don't waste your money buying two little stories at a time.

Editorial Review:

Readers will delight in James Marshall's award-winning classic tales of George and Martha—two beloved, wise, and hilarious hippos!
Story Number One: Split Pea Soup
Oh, no! Martha made split pea soup again! How can George tell Martha that he hates split pea soup without hurting her feelings?
Story Number Two: The Flying Machine
When George's flight does not go as planned, Martha knows just the right thing to say.
