Editorial Review:

Public concern over impacts of chemicals in plant and animal production on health and the environment has led to increased demand for organic produce, which is usually promoted and often perceived as containing fewer contaminants, more nutrients, and being positive for the environment.
These benefits are difficult to quantify, and potential environmental impacts on such benefits have not been widely studied. This book addresses these key points, examining factors such as the role of certain nutrients in prevention and promotion of chronic disease, potential health benefits of bioactive compounds in plants, the prevalence of food-borne pesticides and pathogens and how both local and global environmental factors may affect any differences between organic and conventionally produced food.

Editorial Review:

This season's mouthwatering selection of food and wine is bound to get you cooking and uncorking, from delicious dishes cooked with seasonal produce to indulgent chocolate treats and celebrations of everyone's favourite drinks--tea, coffee, and wine. Although we can buy most of food throughout the year, many so-called "fresh" products may have traveled thousands of airmiles to reach our shopping carts. Food produced locally and marketed in season tasts better and is likely to be at its nutritional best, too. This book offers a delightful collection of no-full recipes from top Sydney cook Ross Dobson, featuring naturally produced foods at their peak of perfection. Here are suggestions for appetizers, salads, entrees, and desserts that not only take advantage of top-quality food through the year but reflect the moods and atmosphere of the seasons. Savor the freshness of spring with Spicy Tofu and Crunchy Pickled New Vegetables; celebrate the arrival of summer with Strawberry Buttermilk Cake; take advantage of the fall's abundance and try the recipes for Wild Mushroom and Pork Pie or Pear Tiramisu; warm up with a Winter Vegetable Tagine. Ross tells you not only how to cook delicious meals but also how to find fresh produce, explaining that the healthy way to buy food is to find in-season produce in outlets such as local farmers' or growers' markets. *Fresh, easy-to-follow recipes from a rising star of the Sydney food scene. *Explains which foods are at their best at particular seasons of the year. *Gorgeous photography by award-winning photographer Richard Jung.

Excellent cookbook, more than recipes, but how to cook too. 5 out of 5 stars.

I have hundreds of cookbooks and have been cooking a long time. This cookbook stands out on my shelf. I could never make a really good stir fry until Leslie explained the steps and possible stir fry combinations to me in her cookbook. She also has excellent recipes for sometimes difficult to find vegan, wheatless and sugarless recipes. I love this cookbook

Didn't see any Quick or Easy recipes in it 1 out of 5 stars.

This is LITERALLY gourmet, not for the everyday cook trying for a better diet!

When I decided to get this book I was expecting to do a little more cooking than average since it had gourmet in the title. And when I got it, it was cool that there were helpful things about different grains and so on that I didn't know before.

But as I looked through the recipes I knew I was never going to make any of them. They had ingredients that were not only hard to find but I wouldn't want to eat them in the first place. (I noticed sea vegetables were in there a bit, ick) I was hoping more for a cookbook that used everyday ingredients from the home and local supermarkets.

All in all it was a nice look see, and a few facts that were new. But I returned mine for a refund.

An organic shopper's essential 5 out of 5 stars.

An organic shopper's essential.

Waldin doesn't pull any punches. He doesn't pretend that all is well in the world of organic wine but he points one in the right direction.

Waldin is an advocate for the organic cause but clearly knows that things can improve.

Anything that Barb does has to be great. She was a great cook and fabulous artist growing up and I know that she has found success in life. Her recent loss will be her strength for the future.

Editorial Review:

In this helpful resource, artist Barbara Kahn discusses the importance of fiber, fats, oils, and cholesterol in one's diet, sets the record straight on the common abuse of the word "organic" (those foods grown without pesticides and processed without chemical additives), and reveals the preserving secrets to keeping organic foods available year-round. 35 line drawings.

Editorial Review:

Paris is a wonderful city for the eyes, but it may be a nightmare for your body if you don't know where to find "real food". In France, even the salt on 90% of the tables will look as beautiful as the Eiffel tower! But this salt routinely contains whitening agents and anti-agglomerants, and your body will pay the price for this artificial beauty. Fortunately there are some places in Paris where you can still be served fresh natural food with "real" salt and sometimes even with an "organically grown French smile". Vegetarian Paris 2008 provides a wealth of information for travelers to Paris who want to enjoy the City of Light without jeopardizing their health. We hope Vegetarian Paris 2008 will help many travelers maintain their healthy diets and have a better time in Paris. Bon voyage and bon appétit! Contents of Vegetarian Paris 2008: In the first chapter, "Restaurants", you will find addresses, telephone numbers, business hours and closest metro stations of Parisian restaurants. Also included are brief examples of meals proposed and price, the percentage of organically grown products used in the preparation of meals, the kind of restaurant (vegetarian, vegan, macrobiotic, vegetarian friendly) and website addresses, when available. You will also find pictures of the restaurants listed. The second chapter lists organic and non-organic juice bars and soup bars and quality vegetarian (or vegetarian friendly) snack bars. Included are the names, addresses, business hours, phone numbers, and closest metro stations, as well as examples of meals/juices/soups proposed with their prices and organic ingredients used. The third chapter lists organic food shops with their names, addresses, business hours and phone numbers. When available, the number of seats for eating-in and websites are given. In the fourth chapter you will find listed the artesian wells still open to the public. Here you can get pure spring water for free, and chat with French people. In the fifth and sixth chapters, you will find lists of the main organic bakeries in Paris and information about organic food open markets. At the end of the book is an English-French food dictionary to help you get what you really want.
