Excellent book- my 3 & 5 yr. olds loved it, and it was easy enough for them to understand, yet descriptive enough that they were intrigued. We bought it in preparation for buying a butterfly habitat to watch the process ourselves. Great learning experience.

I bought this book with the butterfly graden and we gave it as a birthday present. By the time the caterpillars came in the mail she was so excited and she new everything that was going to happen. This was propbably the best birthday gift I could have given an animal loving child. I will give this gift over and over again.

Excellent Introduction for Younger Kids 5 out of 5 stars.

This is an excellent overview of our solar system. It has great engaging illustrations with enough little "gems" to find on every page (Shrodinger's Cat for instance). This book introduces young children to a more detaialed look at our Solar System and with specific facts about each planet.

As other reviewers have noted, the book is thematic. The illustrations included allow the parent/ teacher to point out "real world" uses of scientific knowledge (math, physics, etc.). There is one page that includes "footnotes" for the captions on the oppostie page. This is useful in teaching younger children such concepts for later reading.

As a home educator to my 4 year old son, I found the craft ideas especially beneficial in that it provides you with specific details on how to enhance the learning of these concepts with a couple of simple hands-on projects using materials easily found around your house. This material is easily adapted for older kids, although it may not include enough specific details for the older end of the age spectrum.

My son received this when he was almost 4, and understood the concepts of solid, liquid, and gases by 4.5yo! This describes the concepts in such a way that youngsters can easily understand, but won't bore older children. I would highly recommend this book, along with other books in the "Let's-Read-And-Find-Out Science" series.

Young children will be entertained and educated by What's the World Made of?, finding out about the three states of matter. With lots of funny, silly illustrations and some scientific observations of everyday stuff, this slim volume will stimulate readers to learn more about the suject and become increasingly aware of the world around them.

Did You Know Bullfrog Tadpole's Hibernate? - a review of "From Tadpole to Frog" 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a nice book with attractive artwork that describes the two-year life cycle of the American Bullfrog. As a Stage One book "From Tadpole to Frog" uses simple sentences and concepts that are appropriate for toddlers, preschoolers, and young children up to about 8 or 9 years of age.

Besides a description of the Bullfrog lifecycle, and the 'where Bullfrogs can be found' map, there are pictures with brief descriptions of 5 other frogs, including the Leopard, Pickerel, Wood, Spring Peeper, and Gray Tree frogs.

Four Stars. Good artwork on every page. The color runs from edge to edge. Okay Read-aloud. The Bullfrog is interesting as even the tadpoles hibernate for one year. Nothing objectionable in my opinion; although I should note above that there is a brief mention of reproduction. [I mention this as some parents have concerns and have told me they appreciate such notes.] The book, in any case, says the following about frog reproduction:

At night you hear "Ba-ra-rooom... ba-ra-
room... ba-ra-rooom...". The males are calling
to their mates.

The female hear the call.
The male hugs his mate. He fertilizes her eggs as
she lays them in the water. Thousands of soft
jelly-covered eggs cling together in the cool water.

The artwork shows the frogs hugging, and neither art nor wordage was inappropriate or graphic, in my opinion. Certainly my children didn't think anything of it.

The AR reading level is given as 1.6 which means this is a book for a child in the second half of the first grade. While professionally assessed, this mom thinks quite a few first graders will need some help because of the vocabulary. More difficult words include: hibernate, thousands, whistle, creatures, stretching, fertilizes, speckled, and capture. Words they might not be familiar with are: mate, female, male, breathe, gills, and cling.

I am a second grade teacher and this book enriched our textbook wonderfully. The illustrations and text were easy for the children to understand (and even taught me a few things as well!) We read several of Franklyn M. Branley's books during our year, but this one seems to be a class favorite.

It really helps the young inquiring mind learn about the moon. My almost 5 year old always wants this read. Also it tells you how to do a demonstration to show younger kids why the moon looks the way it does, why it changes. I'm glad we got this book!

This is an awesome book that can be used in the classroom when studying space, planets, and the solar system. As a huge object in the sky, the moon sparks a lot of curiosity and this book helps children understand more about it.

If your child is interested in science, they will enjoy this book. It combines colorful drawings with actual photographs to explane the earth's rotation in a simple, understandable way. It is also a part of the Harcourt reading series for second grade, and a wonderful addition to your home library.

I bought this book for my grandson who just started second grade. He said science was his least favorite subject. He was reading the book by himself when I visited. He loves to read and he likes the book.

Let's Go Rock Collecting is an excellent book in the Let's Read and Find Out Science Series. My son started with this book when he was 4 (he's now 5). It has great illustrations that capture a child's attention and actual photos of the various rocks described so that the child (and parent) can identify a few basic rocks.

One thing that is really great about this book is the simple illustrations to educate the reader about the Earth's Crust and Solid Rock Layer. There are simple diagrams of:

1. The components of a Volcano
2. Moh's Scale of hardness
3. The formation of sedimentary rocks
4. Metamorphic rock process

The book also ends with a practical suggestion that kids will love and that's how to begin your own rock collection and start to identify the rocks you have.

NOTE: Depending on your view of the age of the earth, you may like to know that this book utilizes millions of years in its descriptions.

I am a kindergarten teacher and I absolutely love this book. My students loved it too. I teach a unit on hibernation and this book was a great resource. It has great facts and is written for any age group. After I read it to them, my students have read it over and over.

This short book has a few lines of simple text for each two-page illustration about the winter habits of various animals. The author looks at animals like monarch butterflies which fly south, animals that hibernate like the woodchuck, and the animals which continue to forage in the winter like the pika, deer, and mice. The drawings are lovely in detail. This book would be ideal to read to a child at bedtime on a nice winter night.

I have this book in my preschool classroom, but it is not one that I read at storytime. We use it as a resource when one child begins to question how or why the leaves change color. It is a helpful resource for me as an adult to understand the process, yet in simple language and with pictures to make it interesting for children.

I used this book this semester while student teaching with a Kinder class. The kids really loved the illustrations, and the explanation of why the leaves fall. They were fascinated with the explanation of the pigment for red, yellow, and orange already being there. I'd reccomend it with older children too, as they might enjoy the science behind it even more, and there's more opportunities to actually have them describe the leaves and observe leaves in a section the way the book shows us we can.

My son, like many curious 5 year olds, enjoys watching the Garbage Truck. And he loves to ask questions such as posed by the book's title, Where Does the Garbage Go?

As with most books I have seen in the Let's Read and Find Out Science series, it begins with a story to engage the child in the books primary theme. This one begins in a "traditional" classroom setting where the children learn all about garbage from their classroom teacher. It's a great conversation starter with a young child or group of children to ask them where they think the garbage goes.

In this book children will learn:

1. what garbage is (various types of garbage - yard waste, consumer waste, recycling etc.)

2. simple diagrams explain how an incinerator works, how glass, aluminum, paper and plastic is recycled

3. the process that transpires at a landfill, which includes bulldozers, compactors and dump trucks (a thrill for my son for sure)

4. practical ways to reduce our own garbage
