Editorial Review:

OATHS SWORN . . . loyalties tested . . . forces collide.

Following the colossal battle against the Empire’s warriors on the Burning Plains, Eragon and his dragon, Saphira, have narrowly escaped with their lives. Still there is more at hand for the Rider and his dragon, as Eragon finds himself bound by a tangle of promises he may not be able to keep.

First is Eragon’s oath to his cousin Roran: to help rescue Roran’s beloved, Katrina, from King Galbatorix’s clutches. But Eragon owes his loyalty to others, too. The Varden are in desperate need of his talents and strength—as are the elves and dwarves. When unrest claims the rebels and danger strikes from every corner, Eragon must make choices— choices that take him across the Empire and beyond, choices that may lead to unimagined sacrifice.

Eragon is the greatest hope to rid the land of tyranny. Can this once-simple farm boy unite the rebel forces and defeat the king?

Editorial Review:

Starred Review. Potter fans, relaxthis review packs no spoilers. Instead, we're taking advantage of our public platform to praise Rowling for the excellence of her plotting. We can't think of anyone else who has sustained such an intricate, endlessly inventive plot over seven thick volumes and so constantly surprised us with twists, well-laid traps and Purloined Letter-style tricks. Hallows continues the tradition, both with sly feats of legerdemain and with several altogether new, unexpected elements. Perhaps some of the surprises in Hallows don't have quite the punch as those of earlier books, but that may be because of the thoroughness and consistency with which Rowling has created her magical universe, and because we've so raptly absorbed its rules. We're also seizing the occasion to wish out loud that her editors had done their jobs more actively. It's hard to escape the notion that the first three volumes were more carefully edited than the last four. Hallows doesn't contain the extraneous scenes found in, say, Goblet of Fire, but the momentum is uneven. Rowling is much better at comedy than at fight scenes, and no reader of the sixth book will be startled to hear that Hallows has little humor or that its characters engage in more than a few fights. Surely her editors could have helped her find other methods of building suspense besides the use of ellipses and dashes? And craft fight dialogue that sounds a bit less like it belongs in a comic book? Okay, we're quibbling. We know these minor nuisances won't dent readers' enjoyment, at least not this generation of readers; we couldn't put Hallows down ourselves. But we believe Rowling, and future readers, deserved even better. Ages 9-12. (July) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The stories were rich and captivating and the books were in great condition, especially for such an outstanding price. I would highly recommend this paperback set if you are at all interested in this series.

great deal! 5 out of 5 stars.

I purchased this "used in good condition" and that is exactly what I received in the time frame given. This was a good deal since I was able to buy all seven books at a very reasonable price, nearly the same if I were to just get the first 6 books of the series.

GREAT BUY!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book set is a fabulous price! The books are terrific. You can't read just one. They get better and better. My 8 year old son loves them! It's amazing to see him with an 800 page book!!! I've been reading along with him and, much to my surprise, am LOVING them just as much. Great books, great buy!!!

Editorial Review:

The Harry Potter Books Were Just The Beginning of the Story...

During the brief span of just one decade, hundreds of millions of perfectly ordinary people made history: they became the only ones who would remember what it was like when the Harry Potter saga was still unfinished. What it was like to seek out friends, families, online forums, fan fiction, and podcasts to get a fix between novels. When the potential death of a character was a hotter bet than the World Series. When the unfolding story of a boy wizard changed the way books are read for all time.

And as webmistress of the Leaky Cauldron, one of the most popular Harry Potter sites on the Internet, Melissa Anelli had a front row seat to it all. Whether it was helping Scholastic stop leaks and track down counterfeiters, hosting live PotterCasts at bookstores across the country, touring with the wizard rock band Harry and the Potters, or traveling to Edinburgh to interview J. K. Rowling personally, Melissa was at the center of the Harry Potter tornado, and nothing about her life would ever be the same.

The Harry Potter books are a triumph of the imagination that did far more than break sales records for all time. They restored the world's sense of wonder and took on a magical life of their own. Now the series has ended, but the story is not over. With remembrances from J. K. Rowling's editors, agents, publicists, fans, and Rowling herself, Melissa Anelli takes us on a personal journey through every aspect of the Harry Potter phenomenon -- from his very first spell to his lasting impact on the way we live and dream.

I'm on the third book now and cannot put it down. This is a trilogy that anyone who has enjoyed Lord of the Rings, or other authors such as Jordon, Brooks or Donaldson, will love. Strongly recommended!

You won't leave the couch! 5 out of 5 stars.

It's a wonderful trilogy of great and small battles with enemies both in- and outside ones self. A story filled with hope, fear, magic, perseverance, talent, strength and weakness.
These are books which condemn you to so spend every free moment on the coach or in bed untill you've read them all.

Wonderful Continuation 5 out of 5 stars.

The Inheritance 3-Book Hardcover Boxed Set is a wonderful story. The newest book, Brisingr, picks up right where Paolini left off in Book 2 Eldest. Book 3 takes off right from the beginning and is filled with action, adventure, love, hate, and magic. The Kingdom of Alagaesia is in an all out civil war and only Eragon can save them.

Editorial Review:

WITH THE HIGHLY anticipated publication of Book Three in the Inheritance cycle, the hardcover editions of all three books will be available in a handsome boxed set!

The Chronicles of Narnia, pop-up book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

What a delightful work of art. The mechanics and cut out art work are superb. One must understand that the pop up book depecits all the stories within Narnia. If you have the complete series as shown on BBC or have read all 3 stories by C.S. Lewis then you will be able to relate to each page. Walt Disney has only released one movie "The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe" so one can only connect the first pages of the book to the movie. But even if you have never seen any part or read C.S. Lewis books, this is wonderful pop up book to own. I bought one for my granddaughter and one for me.

Editorial Review:

C. S. Lewis's classic Narnia books spring to life in the hands of award-winning paper engineer Robert Sabuda. Each of the seven books in the series has its own pop-up spread rendered in spectacular detail with stunning special effects. Experience a different adventure from Narnia on every spread in this beautiful addition to the Narnia library—sure to enchant fans of both C. S. Lewis and Robert Sabuda.

Disappointing 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Although I had given the first HP book to a nephew the year it was published, I waited to purchase and read the books until (1) my son was old enough and (2) the series was finished and I could get matching hard copies. A friend ordered this for me through her library connections. It took ages to arrive; forunately for me, I had no idea the box was supposed to be wooden, so I was not initially disappointed by that. However, now that we've begun reading them (my son could easily read them himself but I still read to him at bedtime, and it's really fun to discover Harry's world along with him), I was stunned and insulted to discover that the prose had been tampered with, dumbed down and 'Americanized' for stupid Yanks. I am an American but I know what a packet of crisps is, and when 'chips' has been substituted for 'crisps,' among other things. So now, having spent over $100 for this set, I am going to have to spend more to get the REAL thing. How disappointing. What on earth were the people at Scholastic thinking?! Moreover, why did JK Rowling allow them to do this? I cannot fathom any reason why perfectly ordinary English should have to be changed. Or is it that we really are that stupid, insular, and arrogant that we cannot even read English from other English speaking countries anymore? I am truly sorry that my son will have to read a watered down, adulterated version of these classic stories. What a letdown.

Editorial Review:

Surpassing its popular prequel Eragon, this second volume in the Inheritance trilogy shows growing maturity and skill on the part of its very young author, who was only seventeen when the first volume was published in 2003. The story is solidly in the tradition (some might say derivative) of the classic heroic quest fantasy, with the predictable cast of dwarves, elves, and dragons--but also including some imaginatively creepy creatures of evil.

The land of Alagaesia is suffering under the Empire of the wicked Galbatorix, and Eragon and his dragon Saphira, last of the Riders, are the only hope. But Eragon is young and has much to learn, and so he is sent off to the elven forest city of Ellesmera, where he and Saphira are tutored in magic, battle skills, and the ancient language by the wise former Rider Oromis and his elderly dragon Glaedr. Meanwhile, back at Carvahall, Eragon's home, his cousin Roran is the target of a siege by the hideous Ra'zac, and he must lead the villagers on a desperate escape over the mountains. The two narratives move toward a massive battle with the forces of Galbatorix, where Eragon learns a shocking secret about his parentage and commits himself to saving his people.

The sheer size of the novel, as well as its many characters, places with difficult names, and its use of imaginary languages make this a challenging read, even for experienced fantasy readers. It is essential to have the plot threads of the first volume well in mind before beginning--the publisher has provided not only a map, but a helpful synopsis of the first book and a much-needed Language Guide. But no obstacles will deter the many fans of Eragon from diving headfirst into this highly-awaited fantasy. (Ages 12 and up) --Patty Campbell

Meet Author Christopher Paolini
Christopher Paolini’s abiding love of fantasy and science fiction inspired him to begin writing his debut novel, Eragon, when he graduated from high school at age 15.

"Writing is the heart and soul of my being. It is the means through which I bring my stories to life. There is nothing like putting words on a page and knowing that they will summon certain emotions and reactions from the reader. In my writing, I strive for a lyrical beauty somewhere between Tolkien at his best and Seamus Heaney’s translation of Beowulf." --Christopher Paolini

The Eragon/Eldest Boxed Set

Want to learn more about the series? Check out our review of Eragon: Here's a great big fantasy that you can pull over your head like a comfy old sweater and disappear into for a whole weekend. Christopher Paolini began Eragon when he was just 15, and the book shows the influence of Tolkien, of course, but also Terry Brooks, Anne McCaffrey, and perhaps even Wagner in its traditional quest structure and the generally agreed-upon nature of dwarves, elves, dragons, and heroic warfare with magic swords. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING 5 out of 5 stars.

Doomwyte is one of the best Redwall novels yet! It's a novel that anybody could love! It was filled with puzzles and action!

Usual fare from Brian Jacques 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Brian Jacques has produced another lovely tale of Redwall. Despite the fact that he follows the usual formula, it was still a good adventure and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.

Editorial Review:

On a moonless night, two rats follow hypnotic lights into the forest, never to be seen again. Such is the power of the Doomwytes, sinister ravens led by the deadly Korvus Skurr. And when the young mouse Bisky persuades the creatures of Redwall Abbey to go in search of a fabled treasure, hidden long ago by one of the abbey’s most notorious thieves, they do not suspect Skurr and his ravens will be vying for that very treasure.

Bisky and his fellow Redwallers must summon all their courage to face the evil horde of slithering snakes and vicious ravens. From underground tunnels to the tops of trees, the fearless Redwallers, with the help of their woodland friends, battle some of their most vicious enemies yet in an exhilarating, terrifying treasure hunt.

Gotta love HP! 5 out of 5 stars.

If you are even browsing this page then it is pointless to read any reviews. That means, you are already a fan and know how spell-binding the series is. Every HP book is AMAZING! A great read for all ages.

Pleasantly surprised! 5 out of 5 stars.

It's been difficult for me to get into the Harry Potter books, having already seen all of the movies to this point. However, when the theatrical release of this film was pushed back into 2009, I thought now was a good time to try again with this one. THAN GOODNESS I DID! I've even started going backwards in the series.

What a great read. Rowling's writing is quite good. The scenes are very well described, and the character development is exactly where it needs to be. Rowling really makes you care about the characters all throughout this book (as well as previous installments).

I found the climax to be rewarding, and quite descriptive. I really cannot wait to see the new ideas in the book brought to life in the movie.

For those who've found the books difficult to get into, and have seen the movies, this one is a GREAT read while waiting for the "Half-Blood Prince" to debut in the theatre.

Editorial Review:

This must-read fantasy takes you inside Hogwarts again for Harry's 6th year. What's in store for the wizard and his friends? What danger does his greatest enemy have planned? And who is the half-blood prince? Find out in this long-awaited adventure!\nWinn
