A Great Side Story 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Though the story in The Horse and His Boy is almost of its own, it is still a worthy classic of the Narnian tales. Involving the Pevensie children and a newcomer, Lewis shows his brilliance in telling stories with great detail.
At times, however, I found that some of his narrative contained racial material, and nowadays would be found quite offensive.
Read with caution.

The Horse and His Boy 3 out of 5 stars.

Fifth book printed, third book chronologically.

I began re-reading the Narnia series after coming across a beautiful boxed set of all seven novels. Mainly this was out of nostalgia, as these were favourites when I was young, and I was interested to see how they held up as adults. I found them all to be written very clearly with provocative descriptive prose, and narrative that often draws the reader immediately into the story.

"The Horse and His Boy" stands out from the rest of the series, having little or nothing to do with any of the other characters. The great Aslan makes a few appearances, and his scarcity accentuates the presence that Lewis no doubt felt strongly in his heart. As a total atheist and condemner of religious analogies, even I felt a touch of wonder at each of his appearance!

The story is sound despite being removed from the over-arcing story of the Chronicles. The main character and his companion horse are well drawn and interesting. The features of the countries outside Narnia are bright and interesting, particularly if you've read the other books in the series. The book manages to carry its own weight, which some of the sequels to "The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe" fail to do. An achievement, and worth picking up!

Editorial Review:

Narnia ... where horses talk ... where treachery is brewing ... where destiny awaits.

On a desperate journey, two runaways meet and join forces. Though they are only looking to escape their harsh and narrow lives, they soon find themselves at the center of a terrible battle. It is a battle that will decide their fate and the fate of Narnia itself.

Editorial Review:

A Chance Encounter Forever Changed Their Lives—and Destinies.

Crafted by two masters of inspirational fiction—Janette Oke and T. Davis Bunn—and combining the engaging historical settings, rich characterization, and heartwarming messages quintessential to both authors, The Meeting Place is another timeless story for you to cherish.

Set along the rugged coastline of 18th century Canada in what was then called Acadia (now Nova Scotia and New Brunswick), The Meeting Place re-creates a world that was home to native Indians, French settlers, and English garrisons. Such diverse populations did not live in accord, however. Instead, they were isolated within their own groups by a brewing political tension under the difficult English rule.

Amid such chaotic times two women, both about to become brides and both trying to live lives of quiet peace, meet in a lush field of wildflowers. Louisa, a Frenchwoman, and Catherine, who is English, continue to meet secretly through the seasons, sharing both friendship and growing faith.

The outside world does not mirror their own tranquil happiness, and the dreaded crackdown by the English throne threatens far more than their growing bond. In the face of a heart-wrenching dilemma, Louisa and Catherine strive to maintain their faith and cling to their dreams of family and home.

Good premise, poor execution 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I think this was a good premise that ultimately failed in the execution. I didn't mind the focus on Christian philosophy (its from a religious publisher) but I do object to the frequently dismissive and insulting tone the author took toward those who disagree with his philosophy. In addition to the off-putting lack of open-mindedness I feel the author bit off way more than he could chew. He attempted to cover 50 philosophical questions in 225 pages. Basically this left him enough time to briefly explain the question, provide one quote each from Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, then move on. I would have preferred a much deeper exploration of perhaps five or ten questions rather than the shotgun approach the author took.

Editorial Review:

While nothing can equal or replace the adventure in reading Tolkien’s masterwork, The Lord of the Rings, Peter Kreeft says that the journey into its underlying philosophy can be another exhilarating adventure. Thus, Kreeft takes the reader on a voyage of discovery into the philosophical bones of Middle earth. He organizes the philosophical themes in The Lord of the Rings into 50 categories, accompanied by over 1,000 references to the text of Lord. Since many of the great questions of philosophy are included in the 50-theme outline, this book can also be read as an engaging introduction to philosophy. For each of the philosophical topics in Lord, Kreeft presents tools by which they can be understood. Illustrated.

Echoes from the Edge is BACK!!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Once more Nathan and Kelly must pack their bags and start trekking through dimensions to try and find Nathan's parents and stop Mictar's evil plans.

I liked this book every bit as much as Beyond the Reflection's Edge, if not quite so much as the Dragons in our Midst and Oracles of Fire books. Mr. Davis is a masterful storyteller, and it shows in Eternity's Edge. Harrowing chases, complex mysteries, and mysterious characters abound, but none of them can stand in Nathan Shepherd's way as he pushes on, with the help of his friends Kelly, Daryl, Dr. Gordon, and Clara. If you're a fan of Mr. Davis, and even if you're not, you'll love this book!

What a thrill ride! 4 out of 5 stars.

Wow! Hang onto your seats everyone - when you read this book you are in for a wild ride!!! This is book #2 in a trilogy and it is wonderful. One word of caution though, I highly recommend reading the 1st and 2nd books back to back so you stay in the flow of Earth Red, Earth Yellow, Nathan Blue, Clara Red, Nathan Yellow, etc... I actually picked the 1st one up and read the last few chapters to try and refresh my memory but I know that reading them in direct sequence would be very helpful. I read the 1st one back in June and have read 75 (no joke) other books in between these two so no surprise that the details were a little fuzzy :-)

This is a mind bending thrill ride that will take your breath away. It may be hard for pre-teens to follow, but teens and adults alike will love this book. I can't wait for #3 to come out and wrap everything up for me! I just kept thinking what a cool movie this series would make...

Great read, Big disappointment 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

While this is a great addition to the Left Behind series, Mel Odom will not be completing it any time in the near future. I have contacted him directly wondering what happened to book 4. In his reply, he stated that this is not his choice, that it is out of his hands. Perhaps he will be allowed to finish it some day. His first 3 books are very captivating but there is no closure to his story, for now. I was very frustrated. On a side note, he has started another series based on the military and personal faith called, NCIS: PAID IN BLOOD. I am looking foreward to it.

Editorial Review:

From the decks of U.S. Navy carriers patrolling the Mediterranean to Fort Benning, Georgia, and the dusty sands of the Turkish-Syrian border, this new suspense thriller runs side by side with the phenomenal series that has sold more than 50 million copies.

New characters and situations are added to those from the already explosive Left Behind series to raise the tension to a fever pitch. With technical accuracy from the same people who create best-selling military thrillers, this new series will satisfy the fans of the original Left Behind series who are looking for more.

"You will not fear the terror of the night." —Psalm 91

A monstrous waking nightmare is pursuing graduate student Hailey Maniates across San Francisco to Golden Gate Park where she is rescued by a towering homeless man. She seems able to read her rescuer’s mind, but is it just a delusion? Doctors diagnose her as a paranoid schizophrenic and attempt to prescribe away her alleged hallucinations. But too many questions remain around Hailey and the man who saved her. He appears to suffer from her same mental condition and is convinced that some type of Gypsy vampire is trying to kill them both.

Against reason, Hailey finds herself more and more attracted to this strange man. But what if he is a fantasy? What if he is the monster?

Endorsements:

"From its stunning first scene to its heartwarming last, Shade is a striking tale of mystery and danger that kept me hooked. This is Olson’s finest work yet, and reading it, one gets the feeling he’s just getting warmed up."

Robin Parrish, author of Relentless and Merciless

"
Unseen enemies. Questioned sanity. The weighing of reality. All the things I like in a book! The shadows are not silent. I lost sleep over this book. I got goose bumps from this book. The kind of scary that you crave and cringe at, Shade offers up a monster made more frightening by its originality. Thanks a lot, John Olson--because of you, I will not walk alone at night for a long time to come."

Tosca Lee, author of Demon: A Memoir and Havah: The Story of Eve

"
John B. Olson is a seasoned storyteller, and Shade is quite a story! As the heat turns up, and as menacing tones and brooding characters abound, the theme of God's grace boils to the surface. A few years back, Olson gave us a new twist on Jekyll & Hyde; now he puts his own fast-paced spin on the Dracula story. I can only hope there's a sequel in the works!"

Eric Wilson, author of Field of Blood and A Shred of Truth

"
Shade is a smart, gripping thriller. John B. Olson whips you along in a breakneck odyssey through a hellish paradise lost--and keeps you up all night doing it."

Melanie Wells, author of My Soul to Keep and When the Day of Evil Comes

"Things that go bump in the night are not all figments of overwrought imaginations or evidence of mental illness. As our heroine discovers, evil personified preys on the ignorance of its victims. Lock your doors and windows, leave the lights on, and hunker down for a splendid, spine-chilling read."

Can't wait for next one 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The lonely hero is about to die. The army is facing annihilation. And far off, wings of hope sped to the rescue. Can they get there in time?
Is this a scene from Return of the King--or the ending of Father of Dragons? The fourth of five books in the series, Father of Dragons ends with a monstrous cliffhanger. But the book is more than just a buildup to All My Holy Mountain. With new characters introduced and old friends brought back, this book increases the stakes in the war for Kirthanin. As I finished it, I felt a strange excitement, a longing for the day when all things shall be made new.

Short review but good book 5 out of 5 stars.

As both an author and reader of fiction, I was impressed with "Father of Dragons". Maybe it is because I have always enjoyed a book that could hold my attention and make me think at the same time. In a nutshell, the characters are believable and yet a little out of the ordinary and the story line unique. Give this book a try. I have not read his first books but now I am.
The Christian fiction book that I have written main story theme is about ten years in the life of a little girl who was "chosen by God" to be the next Madonna in the second coming of Christ.

Excellent - entertaining, captivating, and heart touching 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Larimore captivated both my wife and I with his writing and tales of his experience as a new doctor starting out in a new town in North Carolina. Unlike one reader, I never got the impression that the local people were anymore "backwards" than you would find anywheres else. Indeed, it becomes quite clear as Larimore continues to develop as a complete doctor that he has a number of things to learn from the people that were around him. It is fascinating to watch him grow in his practice and expertise, in his faith, and in his relationships with the local people. His love for his patients come through quite clearly.

His tales range from soul touching and heart touching to downright hilarious...the theological exposition that Christ was most definitely a fly fisherman and NOT a lake fisherman was particularly entertaining...and his experience with the couple that had just suffered a miscarriage deeply touches the soul.

For those that enjoyed Herriot, these tales will fit right in - except that the subjects are people (well, most of the time!). I'm looking forward to reading the sequel.

Editorial Review:

A true story with the heart, the humor, and the humility of a raw young doctor in his very first days as a new family doctor in a little town in the Appalachian Mountains.
