A Little Weird, but Good 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Once I figured out what was going on, I liked this book. It's more of an alegory with an SF tilt than a straight-up novel. Kind of a crossbreed, I guess. I suspect Alcorn may have been thinking of Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan when he wrote Edge of Eternity. I know I was, as I read it. It's good, and an easier read than Pilgrim, but not as deep--that would be a very tall order. It's a good read, particularly if you enjoy speculative fiction.

Editorial Review:

Good writing, Rich vocabulary. 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Have never read a book by this author before. I will again. Like the way she constructs sentences, uses rich vocabulary (it is the English version of English). There does appear to have been a great amount of research on literature of Wordsworth and his biography; Fletcher Christian and his life history, geneology, and medical ways in which to murder someone in an undetected way and in how to conduct autopsies. However, it is true, as other reviewers have said, that the ending isn't wholly satisfactory and too easy an out; the revelation of the "bad guy" also seems to be constructed soley to meet the requirement of having an anti-hero. There are too many sub-plots and the story might have been better if she had given these extra characters either far more story or far less, but they hit the middle ground. We learn enough about them to get the ball rolling and then their stories plateau and the ball comes to a standstill with no bearing of real importance to the main story or real ending to the sub-story either. In fact, in the end, only Jane herself-is truly integral to the telling of the story. Everyone else becomes somewhat peripheral, even if their part would be classified as "main character," they really aren't. Also, the tattoos advertised on the cover, really don't hold a highly prominent place in the story. In the end, I would describe this as a comfortable book. It is nice to curl up to, but it won't cause you any lost sleep because you can't keep from turning the next page till morning.

Editorial Review:

After torrential summer rains uncover a bizarrely tattooed body on a Lake District hillside, a long-disregarded old wive’s tale takes on a chilling new plausibility. For centuries, Lakelanders have whispered that Fletcher Christian, made infamous by Mutiny on the Bounty, staged the massacre on Pitcairn so that he could return home. And once there, what if he could tell his story to an old friend and schoolmate, William Wordsworth, who turned it into a long narrative poem—a poem that remained hidden lest it expose Wordsworth to the gallows for harboring a fugitive. Wordsworth specialist Jane Gresham, herself a native of the Lake District, feels compelled to discover once and for all whether the manuscript ever existed—and whether it still exists today. But as she pursues each new lead, death follows hard on her heels. Suddenly Jane is at the heart of a 200-year-old mystery that still has the power to put lives on the line.

"Distant Echoes" is a great read. 5 out of 5 stars.

I loved this book. Full of suspense and beauty, Coble's book, "Distant Echoes" contains vivid, believable characters with enough conflict to keep you guessing until the end. This is a great book.

Almost as nice as being there... 5 out of 5 stars.

Distant Echoes by Colleen Coble isn't just a good read--it's a mini-vacation. Anyone who has ever spent time in our glorious fiftieth state (or dreamed of doing so) will appreciate Colleen's accurate descriptions of the lovely island of Kauai. I, for one, am ready to go back for another visit, this time time with Colleen's second Aloha Reef book, Black Sands, to keep me company.

Exactly What We Want in a Sequel 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Ty Buchanan is certainly not your typical lawyer. After the tragic death of his fiancé, Ty moves into a trailer behind a convent and befriends a nun with a passion for hoops. Together they work to bring justice to the downtrodden that cross their path. Ty's latest case involves a young girl whose mother was brutally murdered before her eyes. As Ty and Sister Mary Veritas look further into the case, they uncover a conspiracy between a larger than life business mogul and Ty's old law firm. It will take every ounce of Ty's wit and Sister Mary's unwavering faith to bring justice and hope to the little girl that has stolen their hearts.

James Scott Bell has given us exactly what we want in a sequel: an even better story. I thoroughly enjoyed Try Dying, but this second installment really outweighs the first. Ty Buchanan is such an engaging character full of heart, flaws, and passion. His own personal search for truth and meaning is such a welcome addition to an already rich plot. Bell knows how to structure a plot (heck, he has written a book about it) and his talent is on full display here. Never does the story drag or cause you to wonder just how many more pages are left. This is truly one of the more engaging novels I've read in some time.

Let's not forget about the wonderfully strange cast of characters Bell treats us to. Sister Mary Veritas is a fun and complex counterpart to Ty and their relationship is wonderfully explored here. Father Bob and Pick McNitt are back and as entertaining as ever with their witty banter and unique perspectives. Bell also mixes in some new characters that are sure to become fan favorites.

Try Darkness holds it's own as a mystery and also works as a relevant exploration into faith. Ty and Sister Mary remind me of Dr. Brennan and Agent Booth on the TV show, Bones. Being a self proclaimed agnostic, Ty often butts heads with Sister Mary over issues of spirituality making for fascinating conversations between the two. Indeed, one of the most intriguing aspects of Ty Buchanan is his passion for helping and serving others despite his uncertainty about God.

James Scott Bell totally has me hooked and I am eagerly awaiting another installment in this impressive series.

Editorial Review:

Ty Buchanan is living on the peaceful grounds of St. Monica's, far away from the glamorous life he led as a rising trial lawyer for a big L.A. firm. Recovering from the death of his fiancée and a false accusation of murder, Buchanan has found his previous ambitions unrewarding. Now he prefers offering legal services to the poor and the under-represented, from his "office" at local coffee bar The Freudian Sip. A mysterious woman with a six year old daughter comes to him for help. She's being illegally evicted from a downtown transient hotel, an interest represented by his old law firm and former best friend, Al Bradshaw. Buchanan won't back down. He's going to fight for the woman's rights.
But then she ends up dead, and the case moves from the courtroom to the streets. Determined to find the killer and protect the little girl, who has no last name and no other family, Buchanan finds he must depend on skills he never needed in the employ of a civil law firm.

A Fun Read 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Alton Gansky is one of my favorite authors and writes a lot of different types of books. This one is a fun read it just didnt grab me like some of his others. Book is based on the biblical figure Enoch who didnt die. Enoch is back to deliver a message to the world and it tells us to "Look for the One I AM sending you." Also there is Mary Martha a former palm reader that has started her own church. A great story I just didnt feel that some of the characters stories were developed as much as they could have been. Also I thought the book ended rather quickly. Still a great book though and a must for fans of Gansky. I still like some of his other books a lot better though such as the JD stanton books or the Perry Sachs books.

Amazing read! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Alton Gansky has another hit on his shelf with his latest novel, "Enoch." Based around the Biblical persona who never tasted death, this incredibly suspenseful read is meticulously crafted with a multi-strand plot that finds a common thread in a message from a mysterious herald that appears in various forms to alert the characters to "look for the one I am sending you." Meanwhile, a just-as-mysterious hitchhiker is picked up by a kindly older couple. And does he have some surprises in store for those he encounters. I thoroughly enjoyed this character! Gansky develops him with brilliance. This book made my heart race and took my imagination to surprising places. As I turned each page, the plot twisted and turned and kept me guessing until I devoured the final word. WOW! What a book!

A competent writer takes on Left Behind and almost succeeds, but it's still too preachy. 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Jerry Jenkins' trademark is cardboard, one dimensional, stereotypical soap opera style characters. That, and the awfully slow pace and constant preaching, is what reuined the "Left Behind" series, a series which really had potential. For this spinoff, the publishers hired Neesa Hart to do the writing, and unlike Jenkins, she actually knows how to write characters that feel like real people, the kind of characters a novel needs for the reader to really care. This makes

"End of State" much better than Jenkins' books. But it still has some of the other flaws of the main series. First of all, it is very preachy (like the originals), and so much so that it seriously distracts from the reader's enjoyment of the story.

So, is the book worth buying? Well, I would rather read three volumes by Neesa Hart than a dozen volumes by Jerry Jenkins, so to those who hasn't yet read any Left Behind books, if you really need to start, you might as well start with these. Die-hard Left Behind fans will of course want to read this series. Sporadical fans may find it repetitive, because we already know the story by now. Those interested in politics may want to check it out, although it's nowhere near as much centered around politics as I thought and hoped.

Editorial Review:

From the back rooms of the U.S. government to the world stage of the United Nations, End of State explores the world of politics and government as it is changed forever by the Rapture.

This new series, combining the explosiveness of the Left Behind universe with the immediacy of West Wing-style political thrills, takes the Rapture and ratchets up the tension to a fever pitch. Written by political insider Neesa Hart, who has won prestigious awards both for her writing and for her youth ministry in churches across America.

I really like this book, I just finished reading it a few hours ago. I really like the relationship brewing between Kade and Bree (Or will it be Nick and Bree? We'll have to see!) I also enjoyed the angsty twist Colleen added to the ending of this book. I'm a sucker for agnsty love! I can't say this enough -- I highly recommend this book! Buy it!

Editorial Review:

Nothing seems beyond a doubt when Bree opens a cold-case file with clues too close for comfort.

Arson. Theft. Murder. When Bree Nichols discovers a corpse in her own basement, a whirlwind investigation ushers an unbidden danger to all she holds dear. Without safe haven in her lighthouse home--or in the arms of a new love--the young widow struggles to free her family from the tentacles of an age-old crime that strikes at the heart of Rock Harbor.

Beyond a Doubt is second in the acclaimed romantic suspense series from best-selling author Colleen Coble. Set in the untamed beauty of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, the Rock Harbor novels deftly draw readers into the life and operation of a canine search-and-rescue team as they help unravel the secrets of an enchanting wilderness.
