Editorial Review:

Something's out there...

Reed Shelton organized this survival weekend. Hired the best guide in the region. Meticulously trained, studied, and packed while enouraging his wife, Beck, to do the same. But little did they know that surviving the elements would become the least of their worries. During thier first night of camping, an unearthly wail pierces the calm of the forest. Then someone--no, something--emerges from the dense woods and begins pursuing them. Everything that follows is a blur to Reed--except for the unforgettable image of a huge creature carrying his wife into the darkness. Dependant on the efforts of a small town and a band of friends, Reed knows they have little time to find Beck. Even more important, he soon realizes that they aren't the only ones doing the hunting. Something much faster, more relentless--and definately not human--has begun to hunt them.

Frank Peretti is at the top of his game in this New York Times best-selling novel of "survival of the fittest." Nothing is as it first appears in this thriller where things that go bump in the night are only a heartbeat away.

A Little Weird, but Good 4 out of 5 stars.

Once I figured out what was going on, I liked this book. It's more of an alegory with an SF tilt than a straight-up novel. Kind of a crossbreed, I guess. I suspect Alcorn may have been thinking of Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan when he wrote Edge of Eternity. I know I was, as I read it. It's good, and an easier read than Pilgrim, but not as deep--that would be a very tall order. It's a good read, particularly if you enjoy speculative fiction.

Her past haunts her future in a well-told story 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Miranda Miller hasn't seen her childhood home in the Louisiana bayou country since she was sent to live with her aunt in New York at the age of five. Her history is completely unknown to her and her remembrance of her early years is non-existent. It's as if she didn't exist for the first five years of her life.

Miranda currently lives in New York with her husband and five-year-old daughter. She's passionate about her career in a Manhattan museum, but is stumbling along in her marriage. Her husband mourns her aloof nature, and Miranda is unable to break down the protective walls. She chalks it up to a personality trait. But in the recesses of her mind, she knows her behavior has other origins.

Willy Pedreaux is a man from Miranda's past. He's dying and insistent that Miranda return to Louisiana to receive some important information about her past-and following his death, to receive her inheritance that includes the family mansion.

Willy dies before he can give Miranda all the information she needs to understand what happened to her and her family so many years ago. But Miranda's need for the truth conquers her fear of `knowing' and she follows the clues that will unearth dark family secrets involving deaths, a valuable treasure, and enemies she didn't know existed.

Whispers of the Bayou sizzles! The Louisiana setting, the myths, treasure, murders and mayhem make for a wonderful story that won't be set aside. The pages keep turning long into the night and when the last page is read, you will want more. While this is from a Christian publisher, it's really a crossover book. Christianity and the relationship with Christ is something dealt with at the very end of the book.

Armchair Interviews says: Whispers of the Bayou is worth the read.

Editorial Review:

From the author of the popular Million Dollar Mysteries and Smart Chick Mysteries comes a new stand–alone novel full of hidden staircases, buried secrets, and the promise of hope found in knowing God.

Miranda Miller wasn’t looking for the news the day the letter came. But, trying to survive in troubled circumstances, she welcomes the chance to change her location for a period of time. The letter informs her that her grandparents’ estate is finally about to become hers. She immediately heads down to Louisiana and the old house by the bayou. There Miranda finds secrets that lead to life–changing revelations.

This suspenseful story reminiscent of old Gothic tales has a complex mystery and a vivid sense of the Deep South. It shows how God can take the darkest circumstances and use them to light a bright path leading to the future.

Distrubing - in a good way 5 out of 5 stars.

I liked this book, but was disturbed by it. By that I mean, the "letters" between Ishbane and Foulgrin made me really start to think at how Satan works on us.

It is a good book for parents to read.

Isbane ... 5 out of 5 stars.

Alcorn is a C.S. Lewis fan and it definitely reads in this book! It is a great book that will open your eyes to the spirit realm. It is a mix between Peretti's This Present Darkness and Lewis's Screwtape Letters. It does have scenes and topics that aren't appropriate for younger audiences. I would love to see this one at the movies!

possibly the worst book i have ever read 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

wow this book is so incredibly bad. not only are the characters all extremely annoying, simplistic, and utterly lacking in depth, but also any possibly interesting aspect of this story is totally skipped over. The "dark past" of the main character is only ever vaguely referred to. The childhood of a band of orphans is presented completely happy-go-lucky. The whole conversion to christianity aspect is so incredibly simplistic that it's AMAZINGLY patronizing to a non-christian. The whole falling in love aspect is so incredibly simplistic that it's AMAZINGLY patronizing to any, um, human beings... and how come all the characters are white? a bunch of disadvantaged kids who meet in the inner city- probability says some of them will be non-white.

I keep trying to come up with a good last phrase to express how awesomely unbelievably enragingly awful and disgusting these books are. i cant do it. i can only say if you enjoy these books (and you aren't a naive and sheltered adolescent) you need to seriously reexamine your life and go have real conversations with some intelligent non-christians and intelligent people in healthy long term relationships.
Okay okay that's a bit harsh, but you definitely need to realize these books have no connection with reality outside of that some sickos really fantasize about life like this.

Book 1 in The O'Malley Series

A CBA Bestseller

Kate O'Malley's specialty is hostage situations, and she's learned to depend only on herself in a crisis. But now Kate's a target. Someone's been sending her black roses . . . maybe the same person who just blew up an airplane and blamed her. Faced with the shocking evidence that the bomber may be someone she knows, Kate has to decide if FBI special agent Dave Richman - and the God he trusts so implicitly - is all he's supposed to be.

A little bit deja vu, but an intriquing read 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Having just finished all 6 books in the O'Malley series, they all carry the same theme with an unbelieving O'Malley being attracted to a believing partner. Book #4 is no exception. It's a little bit "been here, done that" with Jack as he meets Cassie. However, Dee Henderson kept my interest in the story line and she definitely did her homework in detailing the life of a fireman. She uses nuances in her writing to make the characters real and keep you attached to them. If you don't mind reading a bit of "same song, different verse", I'd recommend "The Protector" and each of the books in the O'Malley series.

Editorial Review:

Jack O'Malley is a fireman who is fearless when it comes to facing an inferno. But when an arsonist begins targeting his district, his shift, and his friends, Jack faces the ultimate challenge: protecting the one lady who witnessed the arsonist ... Book number four in the O'Malley series brings back Jack O'Malley from The Truth Seeker in a page-turning thriller. It's Christmas. And in this time of celebration, Cassie Ellis has found the real meaning of Christmas; Jack is still searching to understand. Who is Jesus? On that answer rests his hope that someone greater than he is in control of a situation spiraling into terror.

The Cats Rule the House 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

There's a cat show in town and Cleo's an entrant. Jacques is wondering why the judges just give him the prize automatically. Kate is trying to juggle between relationships with Bev and Jake. Jake is now guardian to his best friend's estranged rebel daughter. Ocie has become a Christian and is eager to tell the world about it. Rhiannon's grandfather is very ill and needs a new heart. In the midst of all this, with the cat show in the background, someone keeps stealing all the cats!

Ok the last time I reviewed a book in this series, my main gripe was that Jake was an annoying character. He was very chauvinist, rude and insensitive. He would always look down on others for not agreeing with him and pretty much keep making snide remarks at Kate. However in this book, he lessens up on all that almost making him likable. He finally comes through in this book with not being snobby, controlling or forcing others to give up non quality food. I really liked Ocie's conversion scene. I thought was Kate said was very true and it was quite moving to watch someone who kept running away from God finally trust in him. It's also cool how it got taped for national airplay. He does get a bit over enthusiastic about trying to convert others but it's nice to see that he's really excited about being a Christian. I was worried at first that Sarita's character would be a complete retelling of past characters from Morris's series that have been in that same situation. It never fails with the best friend dying, the guy promising him that he'd take care of the estranged daughter, daughter is rebel and then tries to hit on guy, eventually becoming good. Rhiannon becomes more dimensional in this book as she actually shows feelings by being worried about her grandfather. Before she just seemed very one dimensional with big words and weird ways. It was touching to see her friendship with the one time gangster. Jacques is very narcissistic while Cleo is more friendly giving the right balance of power between the two cats. The mystery plays second fiddle to everything else that's happening but it doesn't lose your interest either. IMO best book of the series, and I hope that there's more!

Editorial Review:

Readers of mysteries and cat lovers alike will devour this third whodunit in the Jacques & Cleo, Cat Detectives series by bestselling author, Gilbert Morris.

Jake Novak is disgusted at the idea of people fawning over cats, but his downstairs housemate, Mary Katherine Forrest, is delighted. And when the favorite pedigreed cat is kidnapped, however, the cat–loving world is shocked. Then other favored contestants disappear and Jake is hired to solve the catnapping.

As the plot thickens, the friends of Jake and Mary Katherine are drawn into the chase—Beverly Devon–Hunt, Enola Stern, and Oceola Plank join forces to run the catnapper to a blazing finish—aided of course, by Jacques the Ripper...
