An Interview with Joel Osteen

Q: Do you have a hero?

A: Of course, my greatest hero is Jesus Christ. He should be everyone's greatest hero. However, among men, I have two real heroes. My father, John Osteen, was not only the best father anyone could ever have, but was my best friend as well. He was a man of great integrity, and he taught me how important it was to incorporate Jesus Christ into every part of my life. Another of my heroes is Billy Graham who throughout the years has remained true to that which God called him to do and has done so with the utmost dedication, humility, and integrity.

Q: In today's conflicted world, how do you encourage people to maintain their faith?

A: As believers we should be assured that Jesus said He would never leave us nor forsake us. We should adopt a mindset that God wants to be involved in our everyday lives, through good times and difficult times. We should communicate with God throughout our day (to pray without ceasing), not just when we are in crisis. He cares about our lives even in the small things. There is no part of our lives that are insignificant to Him.

Q: What did working behind the scenes at Lakewood during your father's ministry inform how you preach today?

A: Really it all started for me when I was born. Our family never missed church; Sunday morning, Sunday night and Wednesday night, week in and week out. However, for 17 years I did produce and edit my father's sermons for television. I often joke that I attended one year of college and 17 years of seminary. For those 17 years, I would have to study my father's weekly sermons and then cut them down to a 28-minute TV program while maintaining the message. I guess I've listened to at least 1,500 of my father's messages.

Q: Your ministry reaches millions each week through television and the Internet. How has technology changed how people worship today?

A: Through telecommunications technology, especially the web, more Christian programming is available than ever before. Not only do people have more choices in Christian programming, but they can get as much as they want whenever they want it. I think that our use of technology results in people spending more of their time thinking about the things of God. However, I don't see technology replacing worship in the traditional sense--that is worshipping with other believers in a church. Everyone should belong to a good Bible-based church.

Q: In our busy lives, what is your advice for how we can slow things down and find peaceful moments?

A: Personally, I take time each morning to spend with God. I have a quiet place in my home or I find a quiet place if I am traveling where I pray and seek guidance from God. I think that is the best way for anyone to start their day; it really sets the tone for each day.

Q: As a father, what advice would you share with parents struggling with our fast-paced culture?

A: Victoria and I decided a long time ago that our family takes priority over most everything else. I tell people all the time that their families should be their first mission field. Today, it takes a great deal of our time and energy to make a living. We need to make sure our families don't get the short end of the stick and we need to make time for them. And, I am talking about "quality time"; no cell phones, no business calls, no outside distractions, just family.

I am happy that this book has inspired some folks to be better people. I just can't agree with some of what the author is suggesting in his book.

A few things...

It sounds like to me he believes in predestination. I don't...I believe that man has the free will to make his or her own good and bad decisions in his life. God gave that to us. If everything is predestinend why bother reading or listening to this book anyway??? Making my own decisions have PREDESTINED my life. I don't think that God made those decisions for me.

The author suggests that God causes thing to happen in our lives...that he uses pain and problems to serve as wake up calls. I can't blame this on God...it's a human condition for Pete's sake! Are the destitute people in Africa really bad people? NO...the circumstances are really bad. And still born babies...abortions...child abuse...wife beating...murder...are those things that God causes? Nope...we're just human.

And how about what you do with the things that God gives us? Do we give it all up to live like Jesus? That's pretty much what he suggests is part of God's plan for us. He may be right! There are places in the Bible that suggest just that. My main concern is that he mentions that saving for retirement is not in God's plan. I may be going to that bad place for it but I'm saving for my retiremnent. My circumstances allow it. I figure what I do with it after I have to stop working is the real question...I hope!

Please don't allow my critique to affect your decision to read the book or listen to this audio version. There are plenty of good things in there that can help you live a good life. There is also more content in there that I don't necessarily agree with but it's not really worth mentioning here.

Buy it and you decide...

Editorial Review:

The spiritual premise in The Purpose-Driven Life is that there are no accidents---God planned everything and everyone. Therefore, every human has a divine purpose, according to God's master plan. Like a twist on John F. Kennedy's famous inaugural address, this book could be summed up like this: "So my fellow Christians, ask not what God can do for your life plan, ask what your life can do for God's plan." Those who are looking for advice on finding one's calling through career choice, creative expression, or any form of self-discovery should go elsewhere. This is not about self-exploration; it is about purposeful devotion to a Christian God. The book is set up to be a 40-day immersion plan, recognizing that the Bible favors the number 40 as a "spiritually significant time," according to author Rick Warren, the founding pastor of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, California, touted as one of the nation largest congregations. Warren's hope is that readers will "interact" with the 40 chapters, reading them one day at a time, with extensive underlining and writing in the margins. As an inspirational manifesto for creating a more worshipful, church-driven life, this book delivers. Every page is laden with references to scripture or dogma. But it does not do much to address the challenges of modern Christian living, with its competing material, professional, and financial distractions. Nonetheless, this is probably an excellent resource for devout Christians who crave a jumpstart back to worshipfulness. --Gail Hudson

Great for devotional or small group studies 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I have been going through this book with a ladies devotional group and have really enjoyed the message of this book as well as the take aways from this book. It is always nice to have a book that you get so much out of that you want to pass on to others- this is definately a book like that! It has great study questions and prayers to follow with to help you glean important reminders from the book!

Editorial Review:

Beth Moore wants readers to know if God could lift her out of the pit, He can get ANYONE out! She admits she wasn't just a visitor; this former pit-dweller had to be delivered from acres of life-accumulated dirt, bone-chilling darkness, spirit-deadening anger, heart-breaking desperation and mind-numbing confusion. The permanent lessons she learned in her desperation-shared in this very personal book-are lessons of hope for all of us. While she deeply empathizes with the hows and whys of life in the "pit," she continually points readers to the deliverance that awaits. Deliverance is for everyone, she proclaims-no matter how you got stuck, no matter how long you've been down, whether you think you deserve it or not. And in her straight-talking but loving style, she reminds readers that deliverance can begin for them this very day.

FANTASTIC PURCHASE 5 out of 5 stars.

The product was delivered in a timely manner and without any damage. The audio CD's are great for my fiance. He listens to them on his way to and from work. There is alot of practical advice and relates lessons to real life couples and their situations to better understand the art of relationships. Gary Chapman speaks as though he was a friend having a conversation with you. We are very pleased with the purchase and will listen to it a few times I am sure.

Editorial Review:

Married people experience love most strongly through five love languages--quality time, words of encouragement, gifts, acts of service, and physical touch. With thoughtfulness and a gee-whiz tone that works well in all his audios, Gary Chapman aims his insights at men who want more from marriage, as well as those who have more to give. He's a humble teacher, describing the five languages with satisfying examples from his counseling practice and framing his ideas as suggestions. Without making light of the work a marriage requires, he'll convince most men that, if they love their wives, they can easily express it in ways that can make a marriage truly special for everybody.

Editorial Review:

Houston televangelist Joel Osteen is well qualified to write this book, having used the seven principles he shares to achieve his own "rags-to-riches" story. At the heart of Osteen's message is that achieving a successful, prosperous life of fulfillment can only occur when we stop worrying about the past or future to make the most of each present moment by using our God-given strengths and talents to achieve our goals. The key to doing so are the seven steps Osteen outlines: Enlarge Your Vision, Develop a Healthy Self-Image, Discover the Power of Your Thoughts and Words, Let go of the Past, Find Strength Through Adversity, Live to Give, and Choose to Be Happy. Mixing biblical teachings with his own personal experiences, Osteen explains each of these seven steps in an encouraging, optimistic manner that makes them accessible to anyone interested in principles of personal growth. Although written with a Christian slant, the seven steps Osteen shares will have value to anyone wanting to know more about practical steps of self-betterment, regardless of their denomination.--Larry Trivieri Jr.

Editorial Review:

The Man With A Voice Of Biblical Proportions Washington Post December 18, 2000 By Phil McCombs

Suddenly, in the midst of Washington rush-hour traffic, a great sense of calm settles over me.

I'm listening to a tape, and it's filling my soul with thoughts and feelings of peace and joy. A guy cuts me off and I let him, equally sorry that he's in such a frenzied state and grateful that--for once--I'm not. As traffic repeatedly grinds to a halt, I seem to be getting happier because it gives me more time to listen to the tape.

"James Earl Jones Reads the Bible" is the title of this work that a pal turned me on to. "The greatest voice of our time reads the greatest book of all time," the jacket blurb says. In 19 hours (12 cassettes), Jones reads the entire New Testament in a stunning, virtually flawless performance.

I've always tended to think of him as the voice of CNN, or the voice of Darth Vader, maybe, or of Simba's father in "The Lion King." Or the guy who answers when you dial 411 with a stirring, "Welcome to Verizon, local and national 411."

What a voice!

Basso profundo, I think they call it. Listening to Jones read the Bible is like unto listening to your grandfather read you stories when you were little--utterly soothing and reassuring.

It has transformed my daily commute from living hell to something like a spiritual experience, and I generally arrive at work now brimming with good cheer. If I happen to interrupt Jones for radio news, verily I say unto you that its gnashing blare and shrieking commercialism come as painful shocks.

Maybe we could set up roadblocks and confiscate drivers' cellphones in exchange for these tapes. Get thee behind me, Road Rage.

Right now, with the hellidays approaching, I'm finding refuge in Jones's take on the Christmas story from the second chapter of Luke. The great thing about having it on tape is I can listen over and over, getting deeper into the meaning each time. I even find, later, that I've memorized entire passages without even trying.

"And it came to pass in those days," Jones intones, "that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. . . . "

Screeeech! The guy in front of me jerks to a halt. I could care less.

"And [Mary] brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn."

As many times as I've heard the simple, haunting tale, it's never had a more powerful impact. Jones's rendition sends chills up and down my spine. Somehow that voice of his--calm, deep, powerful: an incredible gift--makes the words seem more thrilling than ever.

"And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. . . ."

By the time the heavenly host is saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men," I'm practically in tears. Who doesn't need a little saving in this stressed-out, coffeed-up world of worry, power, fear and road rage?

Jones has so obviously put his heart into this work that I wanted to call him up and talk about it. For one thing, I wondered how he managed to make the first 16 verses of the first chapter of Matthew's gospel--the "begats" enumerating all the generations from Abraham to Jesus--absolutely mesmerizing.

Alas, Jones declined an interview through an aide. "He recorded it a long, long time ago," she explained. "He's very humble about his own work, and his religion is a very personal thing to him. He'd prefer not to talk about it."

Fair enough. I know he's a lovely, low-key guy, having once talked with him and his beautiful wife, the actress Cecilia Hart, at a Washington party. What I hadn't quite realized, not

An outstanding and challenging series 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

There are few books that make you stop and take an accounting of who you are, what you're about and how you fit into time and the universe more than Mere Christianity. While it was originally a radio series (BBC) broadcast during WWII, it's approach is as applicable now as it was then or at any point in time.

If you have any doubts, concerns or interests regarding the existance of God and/or how we relate to Him; if you're searching for Truth (with a capital "T") you will find some of your answers here.

The approach is non-denominational and non- doctrinal. CS Lewis speaks of basic easy to grasp universal concepts rather than lofty dogma. Mere Christianity is and has been a modern classic that can be read and re-read with passion not only for they who search but also for they who have found answers to basic questions we all pose while here on earth

Editorial Review:

Using allegoric narrative, stinging satire, reasoned insight, and his signature wealth of compassion, C.S. Lewis wrote highly entertaining and deeply illuminating essays and books of popular theology that revealed the shared beliefs of Christianity and explored the nature of good and evil. This collection of four of his most imaginative and intelligent works displays a scintillating brilliance that remains strikingly fresh and confirms C.S. Lewis's reputation as one of the leading writers and thinkers of our or any age.

Collection includes:

The Problem of Pain -- read by James Simmons

The Screwtape Letters -- read by Joss Ackland

The Great Divorce -- read by Robert Whitfield

Mere Christianity -- read by Geoffrey Howard
