Editorial Review:

When Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert of Green Gables, Prince Edward Island, send for a boy orphan to help them out at the farm, they are in no way prepared for the error that will change their lives. The mistake takes the shape of Anne Shirley, a redheaded 11-year-old girl who can talk anyone under the table. Fortunately, her sunny nature and quirky imagination quickly win over her reluctant foster parents. Anne's feisty spirit soon draws many friends--and much trouble--her way. Not a day goes by without some melodramatic new episode in the tragicomedy of her life. Early on, Anne declares her eternal antipathy for Gilbert Blythe, a classmate who commits the ultimate sin of mocking her hair color. Later, she accidentally dyes that same cursed hair green. Another time, in her haste to impress a new neighbor, she bakes a cake with liniment instead of vanilla. Lucy Maud Montgomery's series of books about Anne have remained classics since the early 20th century. Her portrayal of this feminine yet independent spirit has given generations of girls a strong female role model, while offering a taste of another, milder time in history. This lovely boxed gift collection comprises Anne of Green Gables, Anne of the Island, Anne of Avonlea, Anne of Windy Poplars, Anne's House of Dreams, Anne of Ingleside, Rainbow Valley, and Rilla of Ingleside. Editorial Review:

The set includes:Little House in the Big Woods, Little House on the Prairie, Farmer Boy, On the Banks of Plum Creek, By the Shores of Silver Lake, The Long Winter, Little Town on the Prairie, These Happy Golden Years, and The First Four Years.

Little House in the Big Woods

Wolves and panthers and bears roam the deep Wisconsin woods in the late 1870's. In those same woods, Laura lives with Pa and Ma, and her sisters, Mary and Baby Carrie, in a snug little house built of logs. Pa hunts and traps. Ma makes her own cheese and butter. All night long, the wind howls lonesomely, but Pa plays the fiddle and sings, keeping the family safe and cozy.

Little House on the Prairie

Pa Ingalls decides to sell the little log house, and the family sets out for Indian country! They travel from Wisconsin to Kansas, and there, finally, Pa builds their little house on the prairie. Sometimes farm life is difficult, even dangerous, but Laura and her family are kept busy and are happy with the promise of their new life on the prairie.

Farmer Boy

While Laura Ingalls grows up in a little house on the western prairie, Almanzo Wilder is living on a big farm in New York State. Almanzo and his brother and sisters work at their chores from dawn to supper most days -- no matter what the weather. There is still time for fun, though, especially with the horses, which Almanzo loves more than anything.

On the Banks of Plum Creek

Laura's family's first home in Minnesota is made of sod, but Pa builds a clean new house made of sawed lumber beside Plum Creek. The money for materials will come from their first wheat crop. Then, just before the wheat is ready to harvest, a strange glittering cloud fills the sky, blocking out the sun. Soon millions of grasshoppers cover the field and everything on the farm. In a week's time, there is no wheat crop left at all.

By the Shores of Silver Lake

Pa Ingalls heads west to the unsettled wilderness of the Dakota Territory. When Ma, Mary, Laura, Carrie, and baby Grace join him, they become the first settlers in the town of De Smet. And Pa begins work on the first building in what will soon be a brand-new town on the shores of Silver Lake.

The Long Winter

The first terrible storm comes to the barren prairie in October. Then it snows almost without stopping until April. Snow has reached the rooftops, and no trains can get through with food or coal. The people of De Smet are starving, including Laura's family, who wonder how they're going to make it through this terrible winter. It is young Almanzo Wilder who finally understands what needs to be done. He must save the town, even if it means risking his own life.

Little Town on the Prairie

The long winter is over. With spring come socials, parties, and "Literaries." There is also work to be done. Laura spends many hours each day sewing shirts to help send Mary to a college for the blind. But in the evenings, Laura makes time for a new caller, Almanzo Wilder.

These Happy Golden Years

Laura is teaching school, and it's terrifying! Most of the students are taller than she is, and she must sleep away from home for the first time. Laura is miserable, but the money is needed to keep Mary in a college for the blind. And every Friday -- no matter what the weather -- Almanzo Wilder arrives to take Laura home to her family for the weekend. Laura and Almanzo are courting, and even though she's not yet sixteen, she knows that this is a time for new beginnings.

The First Four Years

Laura and Almanzo Wilder have just been married! Their life on a small prairie homestead begins with high hopes. But each year seems to bring unexpected disasters -- storms, sickness, fire, and unpaid debts. These first four years call for courage, strength, and a great deal of determination. Always, though, there is love, especially for the newest member of the family -- baby Rose.

The set only has the first 5 books, but has gorgeous color illustrations 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This boxed set of Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House of the Prairie series of books only contains Books 1-5 [a puzzle indeed, why couldn't the publishers have made the entire series available?]. The books in this set, in order are: Little House in the Big Woods, Farmer Boy, Little House on the Prairie, On the Banks of Plum Creek, and By the Shores of Silver Lake.

Though it is not the complete set, this boxed collection is worth splurging on as it is a full-color collector's edition. The illustrations by Garth Williams are beautiful and truly evoke the wonderful world written about by Laura Ingalls Wilder all those years ago. The paper is of high quality and has a glossy finish to it, the text type is large enough that it won't strain one's eyes, and is sturdy enough to be held and read over and over again.

I believe the other books in the series not included in this set are also available to be purchased individually[also illustrated in full color by Garth Brooks]. The missing titles are: The Long Winter, Little Town on the Prairie, These Happy Golden Years, and The First Four Years.

Fans both young and old will enjoy these timeless stories of family, community, faith and challenges, and this sumptuously illustrated boxed set is sure to be a keepsake for collectors, and something that can be passed down.

Editorial Review:

Set during the pioneer days of the late 1800s and early 1900s, Laura Ingalls Wilder's books chronicle her life growing up on the Western frontier. For the first time in the history of the Little House books, these new editions feature Garth Williams' interior art in vibrant, full color. Come along for the adventure with this collector's set of the first five Little House books.

Great Sreies of Books 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

My daughter is nine years old and has been enjoying all the American Girl books since she was seven. We have purchased several sets from Amazon and only one set has had an issue (got two of one book). The books are great for girls that age and are not only fun for them to read but educational as well. I would reccomend them to anyone with a girl age 7-10.

An American Girl (Samantha) 5 out of 5 stars.

"An American Girl"
"Samantha"

This is a series!!! I have had these books for about 5 years! I love them!! I have read them over and over again!!!
It was cool because the first time I read them what ever happened in the book happened to me! It was kind of weird!! But fun!!
I also loved it because my name is Samantha and I felt like I was in the book! It was the most fun I have ever had reading a book!
I would recommend these books to EVERYONE! Because they are so cool and they seem really real! You don't have to read the Samantha ones you can read all different kinds of girls like Melissa and there is just a whole bunch of stories!
Thanks for reading my review!

Not so great for us... 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Our 4 yr old daughter put Felicity and Elizabeth mini dolls on her list for Santa (caught us off guard). Anyhow, I thought it sounded nice. That is until I got to look at one. For the price, they are probably good, just not what I would normally think of as nice. Thier legs don't rotate as much as other brands. The eyes don't open and close. So I researched who made them: Mattel. No way. We won't buy a Mattel (due to our perception of what happened with thier toy recalls based on news reports). So, the next challenge was finding replacements that would be as much of a hit.

Madame Alexander dolls. Made in China also, but none have failed tests (so far). You can go to www.healthytoys.org to see how your toys fair.

The American Girl doll they tested did fine. But, we were down to the details of what mattered. Our local TJ Maxx found two dolls; one looked like our daughter and came with three bears (the ballet lesson), and another one titled Safari Girl that looks like Bindi Irwin (who my daughter loves, watches all her shows, and for those of you who do not know, is the 9 yr old daughter of the late Steve Irwin "The Crocodile Hunter"). Thier eyes open and close, the hip and shoulder and heads move more than the American Girl dolls.

Now, here are the nice things also ... the Madame Alexander dolls can stand by themselves. Which has proven wonderful in play. The clothes are interchangeable with the American Girl doll minis and many other 8 inch doll sizes. So, getting accessories is not a challenge. We personally are avoiding the American Girl doll stuff, but for those who care, and want a higher quality doll ... Madame Alexander makes a HUGE variety of 8 inch dolls. And, you could then order the clothes for them from Mattel (the americangirl.com website).

Now, here is where they part ways in a way that matters to many. The American Girl dolls cost about $20 to $35 in stores we went into (Barnes & Noble books, and Samsclub). And, the discounted price of the Madame Alexander dolls we got her were $40 each. So, twice as much as just the dolls at Barnes and Noble (but with more stuff, like one doll came with three stuffed animals dressed for the ballet lesson, and the other came with a stuffed lion). The ones at Samsclub came with books or DVD of a movie.

We are personally happier with the choice we made. Our daughter said "How did Santa know what I really wanted all along ... I have dreamed about having a Bindi doll, and a doll like me ... but there isn't one out there." That is true so far. So, American Girl dolls were a substitute to her as the next best thing ... not as the best thing, in the first place. She has enjoyed the Felicity movie (even with the dark tones of the split over the tea tax, and her grandfather catching the flu). But, having the dolls it turns out isn't as important.

Also, one other thing. If you are buying into the American Girl doll .. my brother warned they are like Barbies ... tons and tons of stuff all the time to buy that goes with your doll (even the minis).

I know this parts ways with many reviews. But, it is how we feel. The American Girl dolls all have the same faces, bodies, just differently dyed, and hair differs. They don't stand well alone, especially if you move thier legs (there is little to no rotation in that hip joint is why). And, thier eyes don't open and close. Just less detail than we prefer for the money. I have seen dolls as well made for much less that simply lack the brand name attached as the difference. Not so with the Madame Alexanders; finding one with the good hip rotation, better head movement, and eyes that open and close (and can't be pushed in so easy) ... not many brands make those in the 8 inch dolls intended for children to play with. Most of those seem to be reserved for collectors and carry a much higher price.

Lighten up a little! 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I really love the "official" Little House books. My four year-old likes me to read them a little at a time, but the illustrations are black and white, and she likes seeing the color illustrations. These books are a very good way to introduce little ones to Laura's world, get them interested, and THEN start reading the original Little House books. The people who are fussing over the books need to chill a little - these are meant to be an intro to Laura;s world, not the end-all and be-all. Y'all know that Laura Wilder would be laughing uproariously at all this fussing, btw.

Editorial Review:

Long ago, a little girl named Laura Ingalls lived in a little house in the Big Woods of Wisconsin with her Pa, her Ma, her sisters, Mary and Carrie, and their good old bulldog, Jack. Winter was just around the corner, and Laura worked hard to help make the little house ready for the cold days ahead. Soon there was frost on the windows and snow on the ground, but Laura and her folks were warm and cozy in their snug little house in the Big Woods.

Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House books have been cherished by generations of readers. Now for the first time, the youngest readers can share her adventures in these very special picture books adapted from Laura Ingalls Wilder's beloved storybooks. Renée Graef's warm paintings, inspired by Garth Williams' classic Little House illustrations, bring Laura and her family lovingly to life.

A Collection for Generations 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I am a 22 year woman who fell in love with Felicity and the other American Girls when I was about 9 years old. The American Girls Collection is why I love history and am pursuing a career in the field. I've enjoyed passing my collection of books onto my younger sisters, each of whom equally fell in love with the stories and the time periods. I am expecting my first child shortly, a girl, and I can not wait until she is old enough to enjoy these stories as I and my siblings have. These books are a must for any young girl and they are sure to become favorites for your family for generations to come.

I bought this series for our granddaughter who is 10 years old. She read this collection of Felicity books in 7 days. Now she is requesting other books from the American Girl series. It is wonderful to see her reading instead of watching TV or playing video games.

Good books 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I bought this set of books for my daughter's 8th birthday. She loved them. We read them together. I usually read for us but my daughter read some to me. She really could relate to Molly. Some parts I thought we silly but I am over 30 now. I like how it gets my daughter and myself into history and learning new things. Molly lived during World War 2 and her father, a doctor, was over in England. The family has their problems and miss their dad but keep doing their part at home. Molly is my daughter's new favorite. We have read many of the other American Girl books and will continue!

Can't go wrong 5 out of 5 stars.

I don't think you can wrong with the American Girl books. The stories are wonderful. If you can't afford the hard cover these are just as wonderful. Keep them in the box and the books will stay nice and neat for many hours of reading.

We especially love the Molly books because it is close enough in history that our daughters can relate (this happened when grandma was a girl).

Fun Reading 4 out of 5 stars.

Molly is very likeable. We read her late in the series and found it not as interesting as some others in the sets, but were not let to skip a night while into it.

Something to think about 2 out of 5 stars.
40 of 73 people found this review helpful.

In general, we love the American Girl series of books but two books in the Kirsten series disturbed me. In the book "Kirsten Saves the Day" she discovers a bee tree and decides to gather the honey by herself to suprise her family. This is understandable but she acts very foolishly when she goes back to the tree despite having seen a bear the previous day. To make matters worse, she manipulates her little brother into helping her, risking his life with her own. She nearly gets both of them killed when the bear returns to the bee tree

In the book "Changes for Kirsten" she finds a baby racoon in the woods and brings it home. Her mother specifically tells her to leave the racoon in the barn and never to bring it near the house. Despite this, the minute her mother leaves the house Kirsten defies her and brings the baby racoon in. He gets loose and knocks over an oil lamp, burning down their cabin.

All in all I don't find the character of Kirsten to be the sort of person I want my girls to emulate.
