Editorial Review:

Let's get one thing straight right off the bat. Children love books with flaps. They can't get enough of them. And this book has many, many flaps--over 60, in fact. Something else: children are crazy about Thomas the tank engine. Translation? Very young readers will happily spend a lot of time lifting and learning with this big, bright, colorful board book. Early learning concepts are reinforced on each page, as readers are encouraged to explore their knowledge of colors, numbers, sizes, everyday objects, and the alphabet. Thomas the tank engine travels through the pages, starting out early in the morning in the train shed and moving through the stations, dropping off parcels and passengers, and finally ending up in the freight yard with car after car full of important objects to be delivered, such as milk, doors, a piano, a kangaroo, and xylophones. Children should be allowed to roam freely over the pages of this book, making up their own stories related to the pictures they discover under the flaps. (Ages 2 and older) --Emilie Coulter

Nice little book... 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I'm not a huge fan of interactive books as the sounds often seem superfluous, if not downright distracting. But, this book is comprised of five short songs with Thomas-related lyrics you can sing to the tunes of "The Wheels on the Bus," "Mary Had a Little Lamb," "She'll Be Coming 'Round the Mountain," "Down by the Station," and the title tune, which I think is a "Thomas" original. Thomas is on every page with whichever friend is the subject of that song. The book is a nice size for a toddler to handle; perfect for the 18+ months age recommendation, although you certainly could use it with a younger child. And, each song plays in its entirety even if your little one presses another button before it's finished.

Great book 5 out of 5 stars.

I purchased this book for my 17 month old. He loves it. He goes for the book sometimes several times a day. The book is well made in that it will not fall apart: the binding, the part that holds the music, and the thickness of the pages. The book also doesn't stop playing if one of the buttons are pushed. I recommend it.

"It is Great to Be an Engine" plays five songs for children to sing while telling tales about Thomas the Tank Engine and the other trains in the station.

Thomas the Tank Engine on a school trip 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Briefly the school children are shown as they arrive in their uniforms, the girls are in straw hats with the boys wearing red ties. It is never mentioned where exactly this class trip is and hard to tell by the way they are dressed. What is portrayed is how much fun it would be to be the train that takes the kids on the school trip. Before they depart the trains, known as Henry, Thomas and James are scrubbed so their engines are shiny and bright. " The train yard is ready."

Thomas the Tank Engine is all excited when the children arrive wanting them to see him push and pull. But it turns out that Thomas the Tank Engine has work to do on his regular branch line, which makes him sad as he would rather have fun taking the children on their school trip. " Sir Topham Hat has an idea. Do your job, Thomas. Then hurry back. You can take the children home." This sets the train in motion to rush about his regular routine just so he can take the kids home. What this shows in my opinion is Thomas the Tank Engine slacking off on his duties just so he can have fun. This is not a good message for my son to learn at this point in time.

Instead of the happy Thomas the Tank Engine content on his rides he is sad and thinking of hurrying back for the kids instead of focusing on the task at hand and gets upset when he has to wait for his loads and obstacles along the route. His face is red as he is riding up a hill and over a bridge and then through a tunnel. All the while the coaches Annie and Clarabel are reminding him to hurry back so they can take the children home. If they are late another train will do the job. Up ahead Thomas sees Bertie the Bus broken down, but first he ponders whether he should stop and help or continue on hurrying to get to the station before another train to take the kids home.

My son was able to read through Thomas the Tank Engine and the School Trip several times, but it was boring for him since he knew the ending. He also had many questions like where the kids were going on the trip and why they were all dressed in the same clothes. The last page is a green background that makes the text hard to read for my son also. He also wanted to know about what age the kids were on the school trip. It was hard to tell but they appear to be older like ten to thirteen perhaps.

For kids who are fans of Thomas the Tank Engine they will like the book. I would hope others reading will instill to their children how rushing through a job is not the answer.

Editorial Review:

Illus. in full color. That cheeky blue engine refuses to be sidetracked from his goal of taking schoolchildren home after their visit to the train yard--despite a host of obstacles along the way.

Very cute book with pop-ups and songs for every page. My child has so much fun with this book!

Cute book! 4 out of 5 stars.

My daughter asked Santa for a Thomas book with buttons. This is the only one I could find, at sort of the last minute. I'm not familiar with Thomas, but she loves it. Like all pop-up books, I'm not sure how durable it will be.

Lovely pop-ups, songs not railway sounds 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is a pretty good book for Thomas fans - the illustrations and pop-ups are beautifully done. I was expecting railway sound effects but each button plays a different familiar tune to which new Thomas-themed words are set. I'm not a great fan of electronic toy "music" and would have preferred sounds like engines puffing or horns blowing, but it actually works quite well and my son seems to like it.

Editorial Review:

Join Thomas the Tank Engine on his daily travels through the tunnels, over the mountains, and finally back home to the Engine Shed. These characters will jump off the page and into your child's imagination. With sound buttons for each page, this Pop-up Song Book allows children to participate with the story though singing familiar tunes.

Awesome overall. 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Tommy Stubbs's illustrations are beautiful and friendly-looking; the book is of great quality, with a cloth binding and nice paper. The details (like a visit from an owl) are cool and fun to talk about with my almost-two-year-old. My only problem with this book is that Thomas sneaks out past his bedtime without telling anyone but a sleepy [and irresponsible] Gordon. I'm not saying kids will imitate Thomas, necessarily, but if my son had insomnia I'd rather he read a book than sneaked out of the house! Of course, it wouldn't be easy for a train to read a book, so I don't know what I'm suggesting for the storyline in Thomas and the Shooting Star, but it does bother me just a little that Thomas slips out on his own.
My son really enjoys reading the book, though, and he'll ask us to read it several times in the same day. It's definitely a fun story.

Editorial Review:

One restless night, Thomas looks out and sees a shooting star flash by. Determined to see where it went, Thomas sets out into the darkened countryside. The strange nighttime sights and noises add up to a wonderful after-dark adventure for Thomas.

Great For Small Children 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 18 people found this review helpful.

Good Morning Engines is a Play-a-Sound book which features 7 sound buttons: Thomas, a rooster crowing, band music, Percy, ZZZZZZ's (sleeping sound), a ticking clock, and the sound of trains chugging on the track.

This is a glossy, board book with 8 pages that encourages children to push sound buttons at appropriate times in the story (indicated by a square symbol of the sound button). There is a royal parade on the Island of Sodor, but James has overslept! Thomas and Percy come to the rescue, but will the passengers get to the royal parade on time?

Note: the batteries for the sound buttons are replaceable, but you'll have to send in a check for $5.99. You'll then receive two sets of three replacement batteries, plus a free screwdriver and replacement screw. How long the initial batteries last depend on how much your child pushes them. My son has had this book for over a year, and the sound buttons are still going strong.

Editorial Review:

This story includes your child's favorite characters, colorful pictures, and seven sound buttons. Character voice and story sounds make this already exciting story even more fun to read.

21 month old LOVES this book! 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

My 21-month old son LOVES this book. We borrowed it from a neighbor and had to buy them a new one because I just couldn't take it away from him.

I wish the pages were not quite so easy to tear. He's still too young to know NOT to tear book pages. But, he loves pushing all the buttons and hearing the "choo choo."

Editorial Review:

Thomas wakes up and finds that his whistle is broken. On his way to the mechanic, he encounters many of his friends who are in need of a helping hand. Thomas, trying to put off going to the mechanic, willingly assists each of his friends. Finally, Thomas gets to the mechanic and realizes that there was nothing to fear.

less than perfect but still a must-have for Thomas fans 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Paperback with flimsy paper that doesn't stand up to much wear. Our copy is dog-eared and the back cover is ripped off and that didn't take long.

There is one page per letter with a photo from the televison show depicting the theme of that letter (not a hand drawn or computer generated illustration or cartoon). For example: A is for all aboard and the photo is of Thomas stopped at a station. The photos are great. Every page has one sentence at the bottom that uses the word in context. I do have a complaint that each letter is only shown in the upper case. Despite much room available on the page, when the word is spelled out the first letter is in tiny font just like the rest of the letters. I would prefer if the presenting letter were a larger font to highlight its' use in the word. I was hoping to use this book as a way to teach the letters to my son and this is why I am critical of these factors.

With that said, any little Thomas the Tank Engine lover will absolutely love this book.

Some of the words are a stretch or strange (T is for tracks but then the photo shows Terence the tractor and the sentence is "Terence tells Thomas about his tracks". Why not use T for Thomas (the one word the children are most familiar with), or else use Terence as he is pictured, or just say that T is for Thomas, AND Terence, AND Tracks?

This book has gotten us through some long car trips and air flights.

With all my little criticisms, I feel Iit's low cost justifies its purchase and replacement when it wears out.
